After the game, the 25-year-old suggested that the move that resulted in his goal was something that the team regularly practiced in training and their rigorous hard work finally paid off.

Speaking to , the goalscorer said, "For me, it’s not the best goal that I’ve scored here, but obviously a nice goal and good to help the team to win today. We train with this a lot, so I know he’s capable of playing a pass like that. It was amazing, right on my foot, just perfect.

"It’s very important, we built some momentum in the league, now we just keep taking it game by game and hopefully continue to win."

Lionel Messi magic lights up Miami! Six things we learned as World Cup winner buries late free-kick to spark wild scenes on Inter Miami debut

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner made the perfect start to life in the United States with a stunning stoppage-time strike

It was always going to be like this. Of course, Lionel Messi would come on in the second half. Of course, he would get a chance to take a last-minute free-kick with the game on the line. Of course, he would find that one sliver of net out of reach of the opposing goalkeeper. And, of course, it would hand Inter Miami a 2-1 win.

Here was the debut of dreams, the perfect introduction to American soccer for Messi. The score, in a sense, wasn't really going to matter here. It was clear in the celebrities that lined the pitch, in the Argentina kits in the crowds, in the tifo unveiled before kick-off: This was Messi's introduction to the United States, not necessarily a football match.

Fortunately, there was a lot to like about this contest as a sporting event. Both sides had their chances in the early stages, with Cruz Azul hitting the post and Miami peppering the visitors' goal. The home side were rewarded for their pressure, with Robert Taylor pinging a shot in off the post to give his side the lead on the stroke of half-time. But the Messi chants that rang around DRV PNK Stadium from the first minute showed that it was only about one man.

And the home fans were graced with 35 minutes of the Argentine, who swiftly inherited the captain's armband. His impact was almost immediate, a weaving run and quick interchange within 60 seconds of his arrival on the Florida turf. He could do little to stop Cruz Azul's equaliser, though, as Uriel Antuna leveled things with a lashed effort.

Then, in the 93rd minute, Messi had his moment. He was clattered on the edge of the box, found the back of the net by obligation, completing the sort of dream debut — one that somehow also seemed inevitable.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash at DRV PNK Stadium…

Messi has still got it

That's more or less how it works these days. Messi is now a player who operates in moments. He scores free-kicks, finds neat assists, makes the very complex look simple. He no longer dominates games as much as he raises them, occasionally popping up with the spectacular as a reminder that the greatest to ever do it is indeed on the pitch.

Most of the familiar Messi things were here. The Argentine enjoyed the normal slew of weaving runs and dips of a shoulder. He cut between defenders, found angles that didn't exist, and offered some much-needed sharpness in the final third.

But there were also less impressive moments. Messi had the audacity to lose the ball once or twice, while his 36-year-old legs offered little help in Cruz Azul's rapid transitions. These are the things that Inter Miami will have to adapt to, the faults they will need to fix if they are to turn their season around. Those free-kicks won't come every night, or every game. But on Friday, it was perfect.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesBusquets bosses it

There was also a debut for another big-name signing, as Sergio Busquets had the misfortune to be subbed on after Messi, his arrival met with some respectful cheers and generous applause — a far cry from the screams that greeted the previous new signing.

And he was arguably more impactful than the Argentine. Miami had lost control of the midfield before Busquets entered the game, Cruz Azul playing through their triumvirate far too easily. And Busquets, in signature style, filled some of those gaps.

He no longer has the legs to cover space like he used to, and gets exposed in transition these days. But his positional awareness and calmness on the ball was vital. He linked up with Messi on a number of occasions, as his passing as reliable as ever.

There was one crunching tackle, a few sneaky fouls that weren't whistled, and plenty of diagonal balls. He doesn't bring the same spectacle as Messi, but he might just be as important this side.

Stars show up for Messi

David Beckham occupied the owner's box. Kim Kardashian was seen entering the stadium. Serena Williams watched eagerly from the sideline. And before the game, one men's sporting legend hugged another, as Lebron James and Messi shared a moment prior to kick-off.

This was, of course, a must-see event in the world of American soccer, a contest that MLS will hope proves to be a seminal moment in the growth of the game in the country. But it was also a celebrity gathering, with some of the most recognizable faces in sports and entertainment in attendance to watch Messi's debut.

And that might just become the new norm in Miami. Messi's signing was equal parts sporting quality and marketing excellence. His presence alone is enough to make Inter Miami a must-see team. The on-field performances will inevitably be raised, but it's not necessarily about that for the VIPs on the touchline.

And DRV PNK Stadium, for all of its limitations as a venue, will likely be hosting countless A-Listers in the coming months. Friday night, it seems, was just the start.

Miami still have work to do

Miami are currently bottom of the MLS' Eastern Conference by some distance. Tata Martino's squad find themselves 12 points out of playoff contention with 10 games to play, and there is no guarantee that they will be playing into the fall. That much was clear for long stretches on Friday night. The home side were badly exposed at times, often beneficiaries of Cruz Azul's poor finishing.

And even when Messi was on, some weaknesses were there. The visitors still had their moments, and forced Drake Callender into a handful of neat saves. Messi or not, there might be problems to come.

And those will, hopefully, soon be fixed. More signings will surely arrive, with Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta among those to have been mentioned. Further, more youthful, legs will perhaps be needed. As Argentina showed at the World Cup, there must be a team of runners assembled around Messi in order to get the most out of him. Either way, this is a team that will only get better — but needs time to get there.

Portuguese superstar did not respect coachSaw contract terminated in November 2022Forgettable end to second spell in EnglandWHAT HAPPENED?

The Dutch coach inherited a squad at Old Trafford that included five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldoin the summer of 2022. He hit 24 goals in the previous campaign, but had just three efforts to his name through 16 appearances when the World Cup break was reached.

Ronaldo would not play another game for United from that point, as his contract was terminated on the back of an explosive interview in which he admitted to lacking respect for Ten Hag. Debate regarding how the Portuguese departed Manchester raged for several weeks – before he linked up with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr – and former Barcelona and Juventus star Vidal is among those that believe the all-time great should have been handled with greater care and respect.

WHAT THEY SAID

Chilean midfielder Vidal has said on his personal stream: “That coach came in badly. How are you going to take out Cristiano Ronaldo? That's how these guys are. He was the top scorer and he takes him out. These bald guys are very complicated.”

GettyWHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Ronaldo remains a legend at Old Trafford from his first stint at United – when he plundered 118 goals through 292 appearances, while helping the club to Premier League and Champions League titles. His standing in the eyes of some Red Devils supporters has been soured somewhat, but Ten Hag has shown across his time in English football that he is not afraid to make difficult decisions on those that undermine his authority.

Opinion: West Ham may yet lose Arnautovic despite green light to summer departure

West Ham United are experiencing Deja Vu this month two years after they sold Dimitri Payet to Marseille in a £25 million deal, but it appears that a solution to the Marko Arnautovic saga has been struck which will see him remain at the London Stadium.

According to a recent report from The London Evening Standard, West Ham have given the green light for the Austria international to leave the club in the summer window, however, crucially, the club remain fearful that he will depart before the end of February.

The window for Premier League clubs is due to close at the end of January but the Chinese window will remain open for business until the end of February, which could ensure an unhealthy and extended power struggle involving Arnautovic and the club’s hierarchy in a saga akin to that involving Payet which dominated the 2017 January window.

Despite the fact the Hammers are willing to be pragmatic with Arnautovic and allow him to leave in the summer, the rise of player power and the lure of a £300k per week contract in China may well leave them powerless to preventing his departure.

A summer move is one which makes sense for all parties involved: it allows the recruitment team time to scout the market and identify a worth replacement, grants Arnautovic his desired move and ensures that West Ham’s results do not suffer as a consequence of a mid-season exit.

Payet’s decision to leave the club in 2017 left a gaping creative void in the attacking midfield unit which the club struggled without in the remainder of the campaign and, while it must be considered that West Ham have greater strength in depth than they did two years ago, the loss of Arnautovic would undoubtedly represent a similar hammer blow to their ambitions for the season.

West Ham’s stance on Arnautovic’s future is wise under the circumstances, but it seems that their willingness to allow him to leave in the summer may not be enough to avoid a similar outcome to the saga which saw Payet leave for Marseille in 2017.

Paul Mullin explains how travelling by plane helped Wrexham go on 28-game unbeaten run – and it's all thanks to generous Rob McElhenney

McElhenney chartered flight after royal visitPlayers struck air travel dealUnbeaten run ended after coach tripGetty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

The club were placed in a tricky situation when a royal visit to the Racecourse Ground delayed their travel plans for their 2022-23 fixture against Eastleigh in Hampshire. Facing a less-than-ideal five-hour coach journey much closer to kick-off time, McElhenney decided to charter a flight. An outcome that delighted the squad.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT PAUL MULLIN SAID

"Thank goodness for Rob McElhenney," Mullin wrote in his autobiography, . "He came up with the perfect answer: we’d shave hours off the day by flying down to Hampshire. A quick thirty minutes on a plane compared to five hours on a bus would make a massive difference to our preparation, not least because it’s obviously not good for elite sportspeople to be sat in one position all that time. The plan paid dividends when we won 2–0. Afterwards, a couple of people were on at me – ‘Ask Rob if we can fly back as well!’ It wasn’t total laziness: we had another game on the Tuesday and flying back would massively aid our recovery. Rob not only said yes but came up with a deal: keep winning and we could fly to all our away games more than two hours away by road. He might not have counted on us then going on that twenty-eight-game unbeaten streak! When finally we were beaten at Halifax, a game we’d travelled to by road, it was all the proof we needed that coach travel was bad news and air transport was the way forward if we were going to fulfil our potential."

With Wrexham entrenched in an epic battle with Notts County for the one automatic promotion available from the National League, every little advantage was vital. During that unbeaten run, trips to Gateshead, Bromley and Dagenham were reduced from arduous bus trips to short flights and undoubtedly kept players fresher over the relentless 46-game schedule.

WHAT NEXT FOR PAUL MULLIN AND WREXHAM?

Real Madrid player ratings vs Celta Vigo: Marco Asensio stakes claim to Champions League semi-final playing time

Marco Asensio scored and assisted to lead a sharp-looking Real Madrid side past Celta Vigo as they prepare for the Champions League semi-final.

The Spanish winger took advantage of a rare start, while Eder Militao scored a thumping header to lift Real Madrid past Celta Vigo, with an easy 2-0 win.

Asensio, handed a spot in the XI for the 11th time this season, was at his best, firing Real Madrid into a 1-0 lead shortly before half-time with a composed finish. His efforts will help his case to feature against Manchester City in the upcoming Champions League semi-final.

Madrid doubled their advantage after the break, with Militao soaring to meet Asensio's corner with a header into the bottom corner.

This was a relatively meaningless game for Madrid in terms of domestic ambitions; Barcelona have La Liga wrapped up with eight games remaining. Still, Los Blancos put in a professional performance, one that suggests they can to head into the Champions League semi-final on May 9 with clear concentration and incisive play.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from the Santiago Bernabeu…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Thibaut Courtois (7/10):

Denied Iago Aspas for his one real involvement in proceedings. Clean sheet number nine on the season.

Nacho (6/10):

Had an ill-advised attempt on goal, but was otherwise solid.

Eder Militao (7/10):

Scored the second with a towering header. Should probably be among the goals more, given his aerial ability.

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Has fallen behind David Alaba in the pecking order in recent weeks, but took his chance well with the Austrian sidelined.

Eduardo Camavinga (8/10):

Still doesn't like playing left-back, but he's getting very good at it. Sprinted 30 yards to prevent Iago Aspas from pulling one back.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Federico Valverde (5/10):

Is he best used as a third centre-midfielder? Seems to lack his usual punch when part of a trio.

Aurelien Tchouameni (7/10):

Given a chance to prove himself after losing his spot in the side earlier this year. Did well, especially against the dangerous Gabri Veiga. He's still very much the future of this team.

Dani Ceballos (7/10):

Instrumental in the Real Madrid opener, tidy in possession. With his deal expiring in June, this was a performance that very-much suggests he deserves a new contract.

Attack

Marco Asensio (8/10):

Handed a start after providing a healthy goal return of late. Delivered again, firing Vinicius Junior's cut-back into the far corner. Assisted the second, too. 11 goals and seven assists so far this year in all competitions.

Karim Benzema (5/10):

A bit loose inside the box, fired one over with lots of space. Not his best showing – he doesn't look fit.

Vinicius Junior (7/10):

Assisted Asensio after a lovely run. Absolutely electric in the second half. Unlucky not to be among the goals.

Luka Modric (6/10):

A late run-out. Probably didn't need to be risked.

Rodrygo (N/A):

Stretch of the legs after a brace against Chelsea.

Carlo Ancelotti (8/10):

Left out Modric, Rodrygo and Toni Kroos, bringing Ceballos, Asensio and Tchouameni into the fold. And Madrid's levels didn't drop without some of the big names. All eyes are certain to be on the Champions League semi-final, but league wins – no matter how insignificant – never hurt.

The end of the road for Graham Potter? Winners & losers as Tottenham pile pressure on beleaguered Chelsea boss

The Blues manager has now overseen a run of just two wins in 16 matches, and patience must surely now be wearing thin in the Stamford Bridge boardroom

Graham Potter certainly deserved the Chelsea job when he was handed the reins in September. He had been successful everywhere he had been until that point, and was the kind of progressive coach that felt the right hire to replace Thomas Tuchel.

But as we approach the six-month anniversary of his appointment at Stamford Bridge, it's fair to now ask whether he will actually reach that milestone.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham means the Blues have won just one of their last 11 matches in all competitions, and are all but out of the top-four race after slipping 14 points behind Spurs.

Even qualifying for the lesser European competitions now looks a tall order, and Todd Boehly and the rest of the Blues board now have a decision to make on what is the best route forward for the club – let Potter see out the season and see if improvements are made, or sack him now in a bid to salvage something from a campaign that is almost totally lost.

It's not an easy call to make, but it was clear in north London that the Blues are a team going nowhere fast as Potter fights to find the right combination of expensively-assembled players to get positive results.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Getty ImagesLOSER: Graham Potter

Potter clearly hasn't been dealt an easy hand in trying to get the best out of Chelsea's bloated squad, but can any manager of such a big club really continue after winning just two of their last 15 matches in charge?

The ex-Brighton boss is clearly a good coach given what he has done previously in his career, but this job – in part due to the reckless spending of the club's new owners – feels too big for Potter now.

His decision to match up against Tottenham's 3-4-3 formation actually worked well for the first 20 minutes of the game, but once Spurs had sussed the visitors out, Chelsea lacked any kind of cutting edge in the final third.

Potter's desperation was summed up by him throwing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a player who he has left out in the cold since the end of the January transfer window, on for the final 10 minutes to try to save the game, but the Blues never looked like getting back into it.

Todd Boehly insists that he adopts a different attitude towards potentially sacking managers than his predecessor Roman Abramovich, but it feels like we've entered Potter's endgame now.

Things cannot continue like this.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Oliver Skipp

There were concerns that Tottenham's campaign could fall apart after key midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago, but if Skipp carries on playing like this, then Spurs might not miss the Uruguay international as much as they thought.

A product of the north London side's academy, Skipp has had to wait to get a run of games under his belt, but early signs are that the 22-year-old is ready to shine at the top end of the Premier League.

A fine performance on Sunday was capped by a stunning goal to open the scoring just 20 seconds into the second half, as Skipp forced himself in front of Joao Felix to latch onto a clearance and power a shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga from 20 yards.

It was some way for Skipp to open his account for his boyhood club, and if he can add goals to his game, then he is well on the way to becoming the complete midfielder.

GettyLOSER: Thiago Silva

Amid the burning mess that has been Chelsea's 2022-23 season, Thiago Silva has stood strong and continued to shine at the heart of the Blues' defence.

So to see the Brazil centre-back limp off with a knee injury inside the first 20 minutes will have been particularly concerning for Potter, and his team certainly missed their stand-in captain's leadership after he left the field.

With the crucial second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund to come in just 10 days, Chelsea really need their Player of the Season in waiting to have avoided a long-term issue.

If he is missing for that game, then their campaign may well be all but over before the March international break.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Tottenham's top-four hopes

With Newcastle otherwise engaged on Sunday, this game presented Spurs a chance to rubber-stamp their candidacy for a top-four finish after moving above the Magpies in the table last week.

It was an opportunity they eventually took, with their second successive 2-0 home win moving them four points clear of Eddie Howe's side in the table.

Newcastle do, admittedly, have two games in hand on Antonio Conte's team, but if they can pick up a head of steam as they did in the second half of last season, then they could quickly move away.

They have the perfect chance to do just that, too, with five of their next six league matches coming against sides in the bottom eight of the table before they travel to Newcastle on April 23.

On their way to Wembley! Man Utd winners, losers and ratings as Rashford and Weghorst overpower Nottingham Forest in Carabao Cup semi-final

Erik ten Hag's side have one foot in the final of the Carabao Cup after a 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest, with Marcus Rashford starring again.

It was business as usual for Marcus Rashford as the attacker helped fire Manchester United to a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

The England international humiliated the Forest defence as he went on an excellent run down the left wing before smashing in an early opening goal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Rashford remains unstoppable for the Red Devils having scored in all but one of his 10 games since returning to domestic action following the World Cup.

While Rashford put in the kind of quality display United fans have come to expect from him, Wout Weghorst showed he can contribute a great deal to their pursuit of a trophy this season, too.

The Dutch striker scored his first goal for the club to double their lead right on half-time, before Bruno Fernandes added the icing on the cake with a third late on to all-but confirm that United will make it to the Carabao Cup final.

With the three-goal lead and clean sheet giving United a massive advantage for the second leg at Old Trafford, fans can believe a trophy is within their grasp.

GOAL breaks down the winners, losers and player ratings as United got back to winning ways…

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Marcus Rashford:

The untouchable forward's fantastic form continues. Rashford had been lively from the beginning of the game and gave his team an early lead with a lovely goal. He now has 10 goals from as many games since the World Cup and 18 overall this season for United. His performance lasted less than an hour, but he was one of United's strongest performers as he linked up well with his team-mates despite some underwhelming performances from elsewhere in the team.

Wout Weghorst:

The Dutch striker looks a clever signing for Ten Hag's men. Always on the move and looking to unsettle the Forest defence, Weghorst helped move attacks along by combining well with his fellow attackers. His goalscoring prowess was on show when he pounced on a loose ball after Wayne Hennessey saved a shot from Antony and finished it off with ease to secure his team's victory before half-time.

Erik ten Hag:

The Dutch coach put out a strong team in this game and reaped the rewards. Their 3-0 lead in this tie will allow him to rest some key players in the second leg at Old Trafford next week, which may provide a big boost to his team's hopes of competing in this competition, the FA Cup and Europa League, while also keeping up their fight for a top-four finish in the Premier League. Ten Hag's side recovered well from their 3-2 loss at Arsenal and are back to winning ways.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Aaron Wan-Bissaka:

The full-back had plenty of space to work with on the right flank and made sure to get forward, but Wan-Bissaka was simply useless on the ball. Defensively, too, he had some dodgy moments as he left the United back line exposed. Yet another disappointing performance from a player whose future surely lies away from Old Trafford, even a move now seems likelier to come in the summer than in the final week of the January window.

Victor Lindelof:

With the Swedish centre-back and Wan-Bissaka holding the fort on the right side of the United defence, it's no surprise Forest were able to put the visitors under pressure. Lindelof's tackles were lame and his positioning was poor. He was certainly not up to the task against a lively Forest attack.

Nottingham Forest's centre-backs:

Scott McKenna and Joe Worrall were rather abysmal in the heart of the Forest defence. They were run ragged by the United attack and exposed on several occasions, as the likes of Rashford, Weghorst and Antony were able to fly into the centre of the home team's box. Forest continue to invest heavily in the team to enhance their chances of survival in the Premier League, and centre-back is definitely an area they need to take a proper look at as such defending will cost them dearly.

Getty ImagesMan Utd Ratings: Defence

David de Gea (7/10):

A safe pair of hands behind an uneven United defence. The goalkeeper made some strong saves to keep Forest out and ensure United take a clean sheet back to Old Trafford for the return fixture.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (5/10):

Apart from a block on Gustavo Scarpa shortly after the hour mark, the right-back underwhelmed once again. He offered nothing on the ball and was apathetic for the most part when it came to defending.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Another dodgy display from the 28-year-old defender, giving Forest some belief that they could get back into the tie with their lively attack.

Lisandro Martinez (8/10):

United's best defender in this game by far. The Argentine was solid at the back as he chipped in with strong tackles and was sound on the ball to help them build attacks.

Tyrell Malacia (7/10):

The young full-back was constantly charging forward and often moving inside to offer a passing option. He made some good tackles, too, but can be a bit reckless with them.

Getty ImagesMidfield

Casemiro (4/10):

One of his worst performances for the visitors. He was run ragged at times by Morgan Gibbs-White at times and failed to protect the defence as Forest pushed forward. His passing left a lot to be desired too.

Christian Eriksen (5/10):

Tried to keep the ball in circulation in midfield but his passes were too sloppy and he barely made any penetrating passes that created any danger for United.

Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Ineffective for most of this match until he fired in the third goal for the visitors. He was hopeless in attack for the most part, but he did well to rush in and smash home late on.

In a wide-ranging interview with RMC, Al-Khelaifi reflected on the challenges of the last few seasons at a club where European success has proved elusive, despite the vast array of talent assembled in the French capital.

In particular, Al-Khelaifi zeroed in on why Messi never hit the heights of his Barcelona days at the Parc des Princes.

Speaking to former PSG midfielder Jerome Rothen, Al-Khelaifi explained: "I'll say one thing about Messi, he's the best player in the world and the best player in history. It wasn't easy for him to come here after a few years, you have to look at Barcelona. There, everything was for Messi: the players, the coaches and the management. He comes here and it's not the same thing, we also have other players, we have Kylian and also Neymar."

In his two seasons in France, Messi won the Ligue 1 title twice and scored a respectable number of goals. But despite also winning a World Cup with Argentina while a PSG player, the feeling was that Messi never quite produced his glittering best in Paris.

PSG crashed out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage in both of Messi's seasons at the club, looking alarmingly unbalanced in defeats to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
