Aston Villa man could leave this week

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson is reportedly wanted by Galatasaray and is ‘attracted’ by a move away from Villa Park.

The Lowdown: Turkish window still open

The English window slammed shut last Thursday, with Villa completing a late move for Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker, prior to drawing 1-1 at home to Manchester City.

However, there is still a technicality for Premier League clubs to do business with other countries whose windows are open, such as Turkey, where the transfer period ends on Thursday evening.

It looks as though Villa could be one of those affected, following a key update.  Although I have to say, I am not sure this will make much of an impact on the betting for Aston Villa right now, but you can check unibet to be sure of the best odds.  With their new manager seemingly making a poor start for the Lions, I would imagine more eyes will be on the relegation odds, than the top six odds for the season.

The Latest: Sanson wanted by Galatasaray

Taking to Twitter, journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed that Galatasaray want to sign Sanson on loan and the player is ‘attracted’ to the move:

#AstonVilla’s midfielder Morgan #Sanson attracted by the sirens of Turkey! Despite his last minute aborted deal with #Espanyol (TMS issue), the ex-#OM player could find his happiness at #GalatasaraySK, interested by him on loan! Wait and see.”

The Verdict: Good move for all parties

Sanson has found himself generally out of favour under Steven Gerrard, with the 28-year-old not appearing at all in the league so far this season.  In fact, since his move from Marseille on 26 January 2021, the Frenchman has only made 19 starts for the Birmingham club, seeing his career stall in the process.  A move could well suit both parties, as Aston Villa look to reduce their wages on players who aren’t even playing a bit part in their push towards trying to compete, once again, in the top half of the Premier League.  Billionaire owners or not, no club wants to waste a wage on a player that their manager doesn’t seem to want.

For that reason, a move away from Villa makes complete sense, especially after the arrival of Dendoncker, allowing the midfielder more regular minutes and potentially seeing Galatasaray pay some of his wages too, which is a boost for Johan Lange and NSWE.

Sanson has been hailed as a ‘great technician’ by Dean Smith and could thrive in Turkey, but Gerrard will likely be happy to see him move on, so this makes perfect sense for all concerned.

Rangers’ three worst players vs Celtic

Rangers fell to a nightmare 4-0 defeat in Saturday’s Old Firm derby, falling five points off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.

Liel Abada scored twice while Jota and David Turnbull were on target too on a miserable day for the Gers.

With the inquest underway for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players, The Transfer Tavern use statistical specialists SofaScore to determine Rangers’ three worst outfield players – will any of them be fearing for their place ahead of the Champions League curtain raiser at Ajax?

Antonio Colak – 6.1/10

Colak got his first taste of the fixture following his £2.25million summer move from PAOK in Greece, but it’s one he may want to forget.

He recorded just ten touches but still managed to lose possession five times, completing a solitary pass across 60 minutes on the Parkhead pitch.

He also failed with the only dribble he attempted, lost four out of eight ground duels and came off second best in a third of his aerial battles (1/3).

And to compound matters, Colak missed a big chance to get Rangers on the scoreboard.

Glen Kamara – 6.2/10

Kamara’s afternoon ended after 45 minutes, with Van Bronckhorst sending on Scott Wright in his place, and it’s easy to see why the Dutchman took the decision.

He only managed 17 touches and 12 passes, and he didn’t register any dribbles.

The duel statistics aren’t pretty either – four contested, one won (1/2 ground duels, 0/2 aerial duels).

Malik Tillman – 6.4/10

And finally, there’s Tillman, who, like Colak, was making his Old Firm debut.

The American, who’s joined the Gers on loan with an option to buy, picked up a booking in the first half for a foul off the ball.

He too would be brought off before the end as Scott Arfield replaced him on the hour.

Tillman notched 25 touches and just 11 passes but was largely ineffective when running with the ball, completing just one out of four dribbles.

That was perhaps what really hurt his rating, because he did win six of his 11 duels (4/8 ground, 2/3 aerial).

Man Utd now racing Arsenal to sign "complete" £45m Bundesliga attacker

Manchester United are now reportedly racing Arsenal to sign Serhou Guirassy from Borussia Dortmund amid rumours that he has a release clause worth just £45m for selected clubs.

The Reds Devils successfully overhauled their frontline last summer, but could now be aiming to add that extra bit of quality now that Ruben Amorim’s side have found form. Before the international break, they stretched their unbeaten run to five games and will be desperate to continue that run when they play host to David Moyes and Everton on Monday night.

Despite their cost-cutting measures elsewhere, INEOS have shown a willingness to spend big on improving Amorim’s side and 2026 is unlikely to be any different. Those at Old Trafford are already reportedly eyeing a move to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and after his recent rise, no one’s doubting that he’d be an excellent addition.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has also been full of praise for the Man United target during the November international break, telling reporters: “Anderson is a key player for us at the moment. He is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League – that’s why he is with us and starting for us.

“He deserves it because he has been nothing but impressive. He has to keep on going now though. He is a very complete and mobile midfielder, and that’s what he keeps showing me.”

It would be an incredibly positive sign if United managed to welcome such a promising player next year, before then potentially shifting their focus towards signing yet another attacker. Having already welcomed Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig and the Bundesliga last year, reports are claiming that INEOS could be heading back to Germany.

Man Utd racing to sign Guirassy

As reported by Caught Offside, Man United are now racing to sign Guirassy from Borussia Dortmund alongside PSG and Premier League rivals Arsenal. The forward has been a late bloomer, but is now one of Europe’s most clinical strikers. And with reports claiming that his release clause is worth just €50m (£45m) to a selection of clubs, the Red Devils should go all out.

Although Sesko is very much the future of United’s attack, Guirassy could quickly ease the pressure on the forward’s shoulders in 2026. The 29-year-old could guarantee Amorim goals in the here and now, with five to his name already in the Bundesliga this season.

Just how stubborn Dortmund will be amid interest in Guirassy is the question. Former German international went as far as to dub the forward one of the “most complete” he’s ever seen in incredibly high praise. For Dortmund to lose that would be a major blow, but as January approaches their star man could be one to watch.

Ross Taylor comes out of retirement to play for Samoa at T20 World Cup regional qualifiers

“Huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family,” he says after being named in Samoa’s squad for the Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 qualifier

Ross Taylor, the 41-year-old former New Zealand captain, will represent Samoa in the upcoming Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 qualifier in Oman, which could help them qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Taylor was named in the 15-man squad, to be led by Caleb Jasmat, on Friday.”Excited. It’s been a few months in the pipeline, but obviously the team just got announced today, so… exciting to represent the country of my mother’s birth,” Taylor told New Zealand Cricket in a chat. “I always wanted to give back to the Polynesian community in some sort of way. I always thought it would be more in a coaching and other avenues, I never thought I would play [for Samoa]. But as the opportunity arose, looking forward to getting out there and hopefully representing and doing my best for Samoa.”It’s the first time that Samoa are being to a qualifying tournament like this, in Oman. Nice for some other players, who have Samoan heritage and are being able to play for Samoa in this tournament and hopefully go as far as we can.”He is still New Zealand’s fifth-most prolific run-scorer in T20Is despite last playing a game in the format in November 2020.

Taylor hasn’t played competitively since December 2023, when he turned out in the Legends League Cricket tournament in India.”I’ve obviously not played a lot of cricket like we used to. So a bit of a shock to the system. But [I] played in some tournaments, so it’s not as if I have gone three or four years without having played,” he said. “But yeah, need to get up to speed as quickly as I can and it’s always good to train for a month or so, a couple of months to just see how the body reacts and hopefully… it’s not what it used to be at 41, but hopefully it’s good enough.”Good enough to take on New Zealand if their paths cross at the World Cup (if, of course, Samoa get there)? “That’d be strange but cool. That’s the ultimate goal, get to the next stage, the World Cup. “Taylor wasn’t the only major inclusion in the Samoa squad for the qualifiers: 32-year-old Sean Solia, another player who has years of experience playing in New Zealand – for Auckland, not internationally – was named in the squad too. Taylor and Solia are expected to add muscle to a batting line-up that has among its stars Darius Visser, who entered the record books by smashing six sixes in a 39-run over (inclusive of three wides) against Vanuatu’s Nalin Nipiko in August 2024.At the qualifiers – which they reached by trumping Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Fiji – Samoa join Papua New Guinea and Japan as East Asia-Pacific representatives, with Oman, Nepal, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar and UAE as the other competitors.Samoa T20I squadCaleb Jasmat (capt), Ross Taylor, Darius Visser, Sean Solia, Daniel Burgess, Douglas Finau, Sam French, Kurtis Hynam-Nyberg, Ben Mailata, Noah Mead, Solomon Nash, Samson Sola, Fereti Sululoto, Saumani Tiai, Ili Tugaga

Liverpool confident of signing Guehi for free and FSG also want £87m star

Liverpool are reportedly “confident” of signing Marc Guehi on a free transfer next summer, and FSG also want to snap up an £87m-rated star.

Liverpool preparing for trip to Burnley

The international break seems to have lasted a lifetime, but the Reds aren’t too far away from their return to Premier League action this weekend.

Arne Slot’s champions make the trip to Burnley on Sunday afternoon, looking to continue their 100% winning start to the season, and while the Clarets are a newly-promoted team with far less quality than Liverpool, Turf Moor can be a tricky place to visit.

Slot has some key decisions to make with his personnel, not least with Alexander Isak, as he weighs up whether to start the Reds’ new record signing or use him from the substitutes’ bench.

Meanwhile, both Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley could be in the mix to start at right-back, but Dominik Szoboszlai’s superb form in that role may mean that he keeps his place, having flourished in a role that is relatively alien to him.

Liverpool linked with double transfer swoop

According to a new update from Caught Offside, Liverpool and FSG are “confident” of completing the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi next summer, with the 25-year-old out of contract at the end of this season. This is despite rumours of Real Madrid showing an interest in the centre-back.

He showcased his quality once again on Tuesday evening, scoring in England’s 5-0 win away to Serbia and producing an immaculate all-round performance.

Elsewhere, Guehi’s former Palace teammate Michael Olise is also a rumoured target for Liverpool, with the £87m-rated Bayern Munich winger being looked at as a potential long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

If Liverpool were able to sign both Guehi and Olise at the end of the current campaign, it would feel like another huge step in the right direction.

It is common knowledge that Guehi had all but sealed a move to Anfield on deadline day, only for Palace to pull the plug, but it is vital that their interest in him remains strong, with England manager Thomas Tuchel lauding him earlier this week.

“He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field. He has had a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side. He has continued like that in camp and he handles it [the transfer situation] with respect and with a brilliant attitude.”

As for the £87m-rated Olise, he feels like a perfect Salah replacement once the Egyptian’s world-class quality has waned, possessing his ability to cut inside from the right flank and wreak havoc.

Liverpool lead race for "breakout star" with £34m+ release clause in 2026

New Fornals: West Ham enter race to sign "special" £34m Paqueta heir

West Ham United have been here before when losing a star asset in the drama of the summer transfer window.

Indeed, the summer of 2023 saw Declan Rice heartbreakingly leave behind his boyhood Hammers for Arsenal, with the only bonus being that £105m hit the Irons’ bank account to soften the immediate blow.

West Ham's Lucas Paqueta celebrates his goal against Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

At least the Premier League side had sufficient time to adjust to their Rice-less reality, with Lucas Paqueta’s exit from the club, perhaps going right down to the wire of deadline day, instead, amid interest in his services from Aston Villa.

Graham Potter’s men will surely have last-minute replacements up their sleeve in case their much-talked-about midfielder does depart, with the low-morale Hammers entering into a last-ditch race for this £34m gem, as per reports.

West Ham enter late race for £34m star

The latest on Paqueta’s short-term Hammers future seems to change by the minute.

He was reportedly in line to make a £47m move to Unai Emery’s Villans, but now, according to journalist Jacob Steinberg, he should be staying put, unless a drastic exit takes place imminently.

That was seemingly rubberstamped by the Brazilian’s goal celebration during the Hammers’ 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

Still, after the pretty bleak start to the season experienced by those at the London Stadium, additions to the midfield ranks could be prioritised.

Indeed, as per Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the already relegation-threatened Hammers have entered the late race to secure the services of Arsenal reserve midfielder Fabio Vieira.

Plettenberg states that a departure is planned before deadline day for Vieira to exit the Emirates, with the previous £34m buy for the Gunners also attracting interest from Stuttgart.

How Vieira can be Fornals 2.0

Potter and Co. might well view the Portuguese attacking midfielder as a suitable replacement for Paqueta if the Brazilian does up and leave dramatically, with West Ham also winning their next Pablo Fornals potentially by snapping up the versatile 25-year-old.

Before heading back to his native Spain with Real Betis, Fornals was a firm fan favourite plying his trade in East London.

The six-time Spain international would tally up an impressive haul of 23 goals and 19 assists across a mammoth 203 appearances for the club, with pundit Noel Whelan even going as far as to herald the 29-year-old as an “unsung hero” when he was still pulling on claret and blue.

Vieira will hope he can be seen in a similarly glowing light if he leaves North London behind shortly, having shone in flashes for Mikel Arteta’s men, when not consistently stuck on the periphery.

After all, despite making just 49 appearances for Arsenal since his £34m switch from FC Porto, the attacking midfielder has gone on to collect a respectable three goals and ten assists.

With a sublime 15 goals and 24 assists under his belt in Portugal, too, he really could come into his own as an adaptable, Fornals-like presence if Potter and Co. come calling.

Across his up-and-down playing days in Portugal and England, Vieira has at least managed to stand out as a flexible presence, with seven different positions on the pitch being filled by the diminutive 5-foot-7 attacker across 165 clashes above. To add context, Fornals would line up in the same number of different positions for West Ham during his celebrated stay.

While he hasn’t always been front and centre of Arteta’s plans, the 25-year-old playmaker will pray he can get back to his “special” best at the London Stadium, as he was once labelled by writer Hayley McGoldrick, having also been dubbed a “smooth operator” previously by journalist Tom Kundert. That smooth presence could certainly also be applied to Fornals.

If he can star in East London away from the stifling environment of North London, he could also fill a Paqueta-shaped hole down the line, with the Brazilian also being showered with high praise, having been branded “mercurial” for the Hammers by ex-London Stadium coach Mark Warburton.

Even if he does stay, West Ham needs some boosts to lift the dire mood, with Vieira arriving just in the nick of time perhaps having that desired effect.

Dream partner for Magassa: West Ham plotting raid to sign £15m "pitbull"

Following the arrivals of both Soungoutou Magassa and Mateus Fernandes on Friday, could West Ham United now sign a £15m midfield “pitbull” as well?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed former India allrounder S Sriram as their assistant bowling coach ahead of IPL 2025. At CSK, Sriram joins a coaching contingent led by Stephen Fleming (head coach), Mike Hussey (batting coach), and Eric Simons (bowling consultant).Sriram brings with him a wealth of coaching experience at various levels. He effectively replaces Dwayne Bravo at CSK, with the latter having joined defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders as mentor. He was Australia’s assistant coach from 2016 to 2022, a role he left to focus on his assignment with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). In August 2022, Sriram was also appointed Bangladesh’s T20 consultant ahead of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. In September 2023, he joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as assistant coach for IPL 2024, and also returned to Bangladesh – this time as technical consultant – before the ODI World Cup.Sriram has also worked as assistant coach at Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).CSK’s squad for IPL 2025 includes R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Gopal and Noor Ahmad as frontline spinners, with Deepak Hooda and Rachin Ravindra as spin-bowling allrounders.CSK missed qualifying for the playoffs last year as they finished fifth with seven wins and as many defeats in the 14 group matches. Although they were level on 14 points with fourth-placed RCB, CSK’s inferior net run-rate meant they fell just short of making it to the final four.IPL 2025 begins on March 22 with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) taking on RCB in Kolkata, and CSK play Mumbai Indians (MI) the following evening at home in their first match.
