A confiança vai sempre existir.

Atuação diante do Madureira

'It's the win that we needed' – Waqar

Pakistan’s coach, Waqar Younis, admitted that their series-salvaging victory in the third ODI against England was the result that his team needed

Pakistan’s coach, Waqar Younis, admitted that their series-salvaging victory in the third ODI against England was the result that his team needed as they enter the final week of a long, fraught and controversial tour. Having been faced with the prospect of a 3-0 scoreline and two dead-rubber matches at Lord’s and the Rose Bowl, an uplifted squad has been imbued with renewed optimism.”After the two losses, we really needed something like this,” said Waqar. “The series is still alive, and this gives us the incentive that we can come back and maybe win the series now. It’s been a really tough tour on the field and off it, so we’re pretty pleased to be back in this one-day series, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.”Pakistan’s victory came on the day that Scotland Yard’s investigators passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, as the spot-fixing controversy prepared to move forward to its next phase after several destabilising weeks in which the team has been deprived of the services, through suspension, of three of its key players, including both new-ball bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif.Waqar denied any knowledge of this latest turn of events, and insisted that the squad had been fully focussed on its cricket, and that seemed self-evident from the performance of Umar Gul, the most influential seamer still within the Pakistan camp. He produced a performance of irresistible full-length reverse-swing to rout England’s lower-order and deliver victory with his career-best figures of 6 for 42.”The way Umar bowled was outstanding,” said Waqar. “[After making 241], there was no way for us to bowl 50 overs and win this game. Our only chance was to bowl the English team out – and we’ve done that. Shoaib Akhtar was important too, because we really needed early wickets, but this wasn’t a fluke. The boys really played well in a team effort, and the entire thing was what we needed.”Gul’s performance was his finest in England since the World Twenty20 in 2009, when he once again starred on this ground with the remarkable figures of 5 for 6 against New Zealand. On that occasion, Daniel Vettori cast aspersions on the legitimacy of his performance, a suggestion that had caused Waqar to react with fury. There was no need for such a strident defence of his efforts on this occasion, as England knew they had been beaten fair and square.”One big reason for his reverse swing is that he’s got an action that really helps,” said Waqar. “He also does a lot of practice, which really makes him a good reverse-swing bowler, especially at the death with his yorkers because you have to know how to manage them.”One concern for Pakistan as they look ahead to Lord’s on Monday was the fitness of their wicketkeeper, Kamran Akmal, who took a blow on the ring finger while spilling a low edge off Michael Yardy, and had to be replaced by his brother Umar for the latter stages of the innings. Waqar could not confirm whether he’d suffered a fracture as yet, but remained optimistic at this stage. “He’ll go for an x-ray tonight, and we hope he’ll be all right,” he said.

Celtic: Forrest may have blown his chance

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side ultimately sealed their place in the Scottish Cup quarter-final with a 4-0 win over Raith Rovers on Sunday afternoon, in truth, the final scoreline rather flattered the Bhoys.

With the 56-year-old Hoops boss having made seven changes to the side that defeated Aberdeen in midweek, Celtic required a spectacular strike from left-back Liam Scales to break the deadlock midway through the first half, before Giorgos Giakoumakis, Daizen Maeda and Nir Bitton all added goals after the hour mark – despite the Bhoys’ lacklustre display.

Indeed, speaking after the fixture, Postecoglou said of his side’s performance: “I think the urgency wasn’t quite there. It’s not about singling out individuals. We have an intent and ambition to be a certain kind of team, training is intense, so gameday we are intense no matter who starts.”

And, while the Greek-Australian coach may not have wanted to comment on the individual performances of a number of his side, it was clear for all to see that both of Celtic’s starting wingers, Mikey Johnston and James Forrest, were miles off the pace on Sunday – something that will be extremely concerning for the 56-year-old manager, especially considering the duo were up against a Rovers side who currently occupy fourth place in the Scottish Championship table.

Forrest may have blown his final chance

Indeed, with summer signing Liel Abada taking to life in Scotland like a duck to water, with the 20-year-old Israel international having already bagged 14 goals and registered 11 assists over 40 appearances for the Hoops, Forrest already looks to be Postecoglou’s second-choice on the right-hand side of the Celtic front three.

And, while it is true that a series of niggling injuries have limited the number of minutes the 30-year-old has played so far this season, the £5.4m-rated forward has nevertheless returned a disappointing three goals and three assists over his 23 outings for the Bhoys this term – with only one of these goal contributions, an assist against Dundee in a 6-0 win at the beginning of the current campaign, coming in the Premiership.

However, the £19k-per-week Scotland international had the perfect opportunity to prove to Postecoglou that he is capable of challenging Abada for his spot on the right-wing over the remainder of the season on Sunday, with the 56-year-old handing Forrest his 13th start of the current campaign against Raith Rovers.

Although, if this was Forrest’s last big chance to stake his claim on a starting spot, it is an opportunity the 30-year-old blew completely, as, over the course of his 69 minutes on the pitch, the winger offered his side next to nothing going forwards, with the Scottish Daily Express awarding the 38-time capped international a four in their player ratings – the worst of any Celtic player on the day – as well as stating of his display:

“Looked off the pace again, couldn’t trouble Raith down the right flank. Seemed to inexplicably hold back from releasing the ball at key moments.”

As such, while it is undeniable that Forrest is a player who has contributed a great deal for the Bhoys over the years, often being the club’s saviour in the biggest of games, considering his overall level of performance so far under the management of Postecoglou, this could well be the beginning of the end of the Parkhead hero – as the 30-year-old well and truly fluffed his big chance on Sunday.

Peiris keeps Sri Lanka level

The hosts had been well-positioned on 255 for 5 overnight but Peiris added three wickets to his tally to scythe through the lower order and finish with 5 for 44.England fought back almost immediately, as opener Yasoda Lanka was sent back by Atif Sheikh in the fifth over of Sri Lanka’s second innings. Ramith Rambukwella and Bhanuka Rajapaksa steadied the ship with a 74-run stand, but after Rambukwella was bowled by Matt Dunn for a patient 31 England steadily chipped away at the middle order.Rajapaksa found an able partner in Kithuruwan Vithanage, adding a further 46 for the fourth wicket before he fell just three runs short of a century, departing to Azeem Rafiq’s offbreaks. Vithanage then raced to 48 with seven fours and a six before he was undone by Jacob Ball’s medium pace. Ball had Nipun Karunanayake caught behind for 22 not long after, but Denuwan Rajakaruna and Peiris held firm until stumps with a 19-run stand.England had been poised to bat Sri Lanka out of the game when play resumed this morning with Ateeq Javid and Rafiq well set on unbeaten 70s, but when Rafiq was bowled by Sanitha de Mel England’s lower order quickly folded. Adam Rouse, Ball and Sheikh were all dispatched in one over from Peiris, who then combined with de Mel to get rid of Javid for 90 to bring the innings to a close.

Celtic: Karamoko Dembele in squad for Aberdeen

Celtic ace Karamoko Dembele has been named in a 21-man squad for the trip to Aberdeen this evening, Football Scotland report.

The Lowdown: Out all season

Labelled as ‘special’ by former boss Neil Lennon, Dembele hasn’t made a competitive appearance under Ange Postecoglou this season. He injured his ankle in the club’s pre-season tour of Wales and underwent surgery back in October following complications.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-21/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin suggested in December that the winger may have broken a bone in his ankle despite initial reports suggesting that it may not be quite that bad. However, there now seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for Dembele as he seems to be over his long-term problems.

The Latest: Squad inclusion

As reported by Football Scotland’s Mark Hendry, Dembele has been named in a 21-man squad for the trip to Pittodrie.

The report adds Dembele could be pushing for a return following his long-term injury.

The Verdict: Good news

Dembele is actually out of contract at the end of the season, so his return should allow Postecoglou to have a good look at him over the coming months.

Who knows, Dembele may already have his sights set on a move away, but returning to full fitness can only be good news for the Celtic manager to assess the teenager in the second half of the season.

He was linked with French sides Lille and Nantes 12 months ago, and if he doesn’t feature at Pittodrie, Dembele may well get the chance to play for the first time this season on Sunday in a Scottish Cup clash against second-tier side Raith Rovers.
