Everton still monitoring Jesse Lingard

Everton are still monitoring the situation of Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard and could be tempted to make a late swoop with Premier League clubs able to do business with each other until 3 February.

What’s the latest?

According to the Manchester Evening News, Everton are amongst the clubs still monitoring Lingard’s situation at Old Trafford with a potential move to Newcastle United facing numerous difficulties.

The £18m-rated Englishman has only made one appearance in the Premier League under United interim boss Ralf Rangnick who has already admitted to the 29-year-old that he isn’t in the German’s plans for the remainder of the campaign with the winger’s tenure at Old Trafford looking all but over.

The Toffees are set to appoint former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard as their new manager after sacking Rafa Benitez following a torrid run of one win in 13 league games and the 43-year-old could be tempted at the possibility of bringing Lingard to Merseyside.

Everton should sign Lingard

With their Premier League position still precarious, Everton would be wise to make more signings before the transfer window closes.

The Toffees are sat in 16th just four points clear of the relegation zone and Lampard will be keen to ensure that any fears of dropping down to the Championship are extinguished as soon as possible.

A swoop for Lingard, therefore, could appease both parties, with United getting an unwanted player off their books ahead of the expiration of the 29-year-old’s contract in June and Everton adding quality out wide, something they lack.

Summer signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray have exceeded expectations, scoring six goals each thus far whilst Richarlison refused to rule out a move away from Goodison Park back in September.

However, 25-year-old Alex Iwobi has only managed one Premier League goal this term whilst youngster Anthony Gordon is still developing.

Anwar El Ghazi has joined on loan from Aston Villa for the remainder of the campaign but is yet to make an appearance for the Merseyside club.

Labelled as an “intelligent footballer” by ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, Lingard enjoyed a successful loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of last season in order to reignite his career.

The 29-year-old scored nine goals in 16 appearances for the Hammers and if he can replicate that form in Merseyside, he’d be an inspired signing by the incoming boss, one that drags them back up the table quickly.

The Englishman needs to depart Old Trafford as soon as possible and a move across the northwest could prove the perfect opportunity to revive his career.

Gayle sends Benn from the field

Happier times: Chris Gayle wasn’t pleased with his spinner Sulieman Benn in the fourth ODI•Associated Press

Sulieman Benn has riled opponents and match referees in the past, but he has hit a new low after being ordered off the field by his captain Chris Gayle. During West Indies’ seven-wicket loss to South Africa in Dominica, Benn upset Gayle so much by failing to follow instructions that he was told he was no longer required.”I actually asked him to leave the field,’ Gayle told reporters after the game. “As a captain, it was a situation like you ask a particular bowler to do it and he said he had never done certain things before. That’s why you have practice sessions, to practise. I asked him to simply bowl over the wicket. I don’t see why it should be a problem.”He wasn’t up for it and if you’re not up for it, why give that particular bowler the ball. I just see it that he [Benn] doesn’t want to take part. It was my call to actually ask him to leave and tell him that he is not needed anymore.”Benn’s behavioural issues came to a head during the Perth Test in December, when he was suspended for two ODIs following a clash with Mitchell Johnson and Brad Haddin. He had previously been fined and forced to have counselling after what was labelled “insubordinate” behaviour during a West Indies A tour of England in 2002.His fiery nature has also been on display at club level, when he was fined after an altercation with an opponent while batting for his Barbados club Spartan. It is unclear whether Benn will play any part in the fifth and final ODI against South Africa in Trinidad on Thursday. The fourth ODI had a dramatic finish with Dwayne Bravo bowling three consecutive dot balls in the final over, leaving South Africa with one to get off the last delivery. AB de Villiers then played the ball to midwicket and sprinted the single as Darren Sammy fumbled. Gayle praised Bravo for his bowling effort but said that, despite making 303, West Indies should have scored a lot more.”Credit must go to Bravo for the way he bowled the final over,” Gayle said. “But to get 300 runs, and lose was not good. We should have scored at least 30 or 40 more runs based on the start that Dale [Richards] and I gave the team, but we were very disappointing in the middle overs again, too many dot balls. We also missed a few catches, and this is the inconsistency. At times, we do well with the bat, and then turn up and do something completely different with the ball.”

Ayew back in Palace training

Crystal Palace could be boosted by the return of forward Jordan Ayew for Sunday’s clash with Liverpool after Ghana’s shock exit from the African Cup of Nations.

What’s the latest?

After travelling to Cameroon to compete in the African Cup on Nations with his native Ghana, which saw him miss Crystal Palace’s derby draw with Brighton last week, Jordan Ayew could be back in contention for the Eagles.

The Black Stars suffered a shock exit from AFCON, their first dismissal at the group stage since 2006, which therefore has seen Ayew return to south London.

Palace manager Patrick Vieira confirmed that the 30-year-old has returned to training ahead of the Reds’ trip to Selhurst Park and could be available for selection.

On Ayew, the Frenchman said: “We don’t know, we still have a couple of days before the game. He was in today [Friday] and took part in the first part of training. We will have a discussion tomorrow [Saturday] to find out how he’s feeling.”

Vieira will be delighted

Although he may not be fit to start, Vieira will be delighted to have one of his regular starters back available, especially after less time away than initially thought.

Before his departure for AFCON, Ayew had featured in all bar one of the Eagles’ Premier League matches this season. Although he has only scored once and assisted twice, the 30-year-old is a favourite of his manager for his work-rate and defensive contribution.

Last month, Vieira heaped the Ghanaian with praise, stating: “I think when he had his opportunity the focus was on what he’s doing for the team. He’s sacrificing himself for the team, working hard for the team. This is what we need and want. Goals will come.”

Moreover, the more players available the better for the south London side, who face the tall task of taking a result against a Liverpool side who have lost just one of their last ten Premier League matches and sit second in the table.

Brett Lee will be back in Australian colours at the World Twenty20 after being chosen for the first time since undergoing elbow surgery last year. Lee, 33, retired from Tests to prolong his limited-overs career and his reputation has won him a spot alongside Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Mitchell Johnson for the tournament starting in the Caribbean next month.Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, would have liked Lee to have played more this summer but hopes he will regain match fitness with Kings XI Punjab in the IPL. “At his best he is one of the best Twenty20 cricketers in the world,” Hilditch said. “He also has the opportunity of continuing to play in the IPL as preparation for this tournament.”Ryan Harris, who made his Test debut in New Zealand, was “extremely unlucky” to miss the 15-man squad while Travis Birt was overlooked after playing three matches during Australia’s summer. The allrounder Daniel Christian holds his spot and Michael Hussey’s experience and strong recent form earned him a trip. It is a strange selection because Hussey hasn’t appeared in a T20 international since the 2009 global event in England.”Dan Christian had limited opportunities in the lead-up to this selection but we see him as an exciting Twenty20 cricketer with his all-round skills with bat and ball,” Hilditch said. “We’ve also added Tim Paine to give us cover in case of injury to Brad Haddin and, of course, Tim’s ability with the bat more than warrants his selection.”Australia must finish in the top two of a group also including Pakistan and Bangladesh to avoid going out in the first round for the second tournament in a row. Cenk Tosun talks about Everton future

Everton have blown more than £500m under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri, with little return of investment when it comes to competing for trophies or making progress in the Premier League.

They currently sit 15th in Premier League and the time has come to offload players, but the club is finding it hard to get rid of some of their fringe players.

What’s the word?

Toffees striker Cenk Tosun has no intentions of leaving the club this month according to an interview with Turkish news outlet Fanatik.

The 30-year-old said: “My contract ends at the end of the season. Beşiktaş is my home anyway. But for now, I have no intention or position to return”. He added: “I want to finish this season here and go somewhere at the end of the season.”

The interview comes after the striker, who was signed by Everton for £27m back in January 2018, had been linked with a move away from the club a few months ago, as Rafael Benitez intends to sell players to boost transfer funds so that the Toffees can stay well within Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Journalist Nicolo Schira tweeted just last week that the player is not in the manager’s plans, saying: “Cenk Tosun is not in Rafa Benitez’s plans: the Turkish striker is ready to leave Everton in January. He could return to the Turkish Super Lig. Besiktas have shown interest to re-sign him.”

However, if the 30-year-old’s recent comments align with Everton’s plans, he will now stay with the club until his contract comes to an end in the summer.

Nightmare for Benitez

Benitez will be fuming that the player doesn’t intend to make an early an exit in the January transfer window, as a move would help with adding funds to the near-empty transfer pot for the Everton manager to put towards signing players who are needed in other areas of the squad.

Tosun has fallen out of favour at Goodison Park, even when the Toffees were going through an injury crisis and virus outbreak which resulted in seven players being unavailable for the 1-1 draw at Chelsea last month. He was not even on the bench that night and has only made a solitary six-minute appearance this season under Benitez, which came in the Merseyside derby.

Since joining the Toffees, the £69k-p/w flop has failed to make an impact on the side, appearing only 59 times in the last three-and-a-half years, scoring 11 goals and claiming six assists.

As a result, his transfer fee of £27m hasn’t been worth it, especially when compared with another forward who joined the Toffees in 2018 – Richarlison has made a huge impact on the team since his arrival in the same year, with 45 goals and 11 assists in a blue shirt.

Left with a nightmare scenario, Benitez will have to look for other ways to find the funds to complete his business over the remaining weeks of the transfer window, with Tosun likely to run down his contract to the summer instead of agreeing to a move now which would generate some much-needed income for Everton.
