The Indian selectors have called up Rohit Sharma to the squad for the first Test against South Africa as cover for VVS Laxman. Laxman hasn’t fully recovered from the finger injury he sustained while fielding during the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong last month.Captaining the Indian Board President’s XI in the tour game against the South Africans, Rohit managed just 20 but was delighted with his selection. “It feels good that I’ve been asked to stay back… (I’m feeling great),” he told the Kolkata-based .This is the first time Rohit is part of the Test squad since the 2008 visit to Sri Lanka. He was in fine form during the Ranji Trophy this season, making 527 at 87.83, including a highest of 309* against Gujarat.Meanwhile, Laxman skipped the team’s fielding practice on Wednesday afternoon, but did have a bat at the nets.India will be sweating over the injuries that have dogged the side of late – key batsmen Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and fast bowler Sreesanth have already been ruled out of this match.Captain MS Dhoni, though, looked to have recovered fully from the back spasms which forced him to miss the Chittagong Test. “One can’t have any control over injuries. Obviously, we’ll miss Dravid. It’s like a captain having no control at all over the toss.”

Shane Watson, Mohammad Asif return to place of debut

Shane Watson and Mohammad Asif return to the SCG having managed just 14 further Tests since their initial Sydney experience

Five years have passed since Shane Watson and Mohammad Asif made their Test debuts at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Despite inauspicious outings – Watson fell over delivering his first ball, Asif failed to take a wicket in either innings – great things were expected of the duo by their respective nations, both of which had invested much time and many resources into their development. This week, Watson and Asif return to the SCG having managed just 14 further Tests since their initial Sydney experience. Injuries, role realignment and, in the case of Asif, drug indiscretions have severely disrupted what might have been a prosperous few years at a time when both teams were desperately attempting to unearth a new generation of superstars. This certainly wasn’t in the script.Fate, however, has conspired to deliver both players back to the SCG in the kind of senior roles originally predicted for them. Granted, few in 2005 would have tipped Watson to one day open the innings at a time when he was sandwiched between Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne at No. 7, but his match-winning ability with bat and ball, along with the selection flexibility he offers, were precisely the outcomes Australia’s selectors had hoped would materialise.”It seems so long ago, my Test debut here,” Watson recalled. “It’s amazing how at the time I thought I was ready to go. I thought I was in a good place back when I was a youngster, but you don’t realise how much you can learn and the things you really can develop as a batsman, as a cricketer and as a person.”The confidence definitely plays a big part, knowing I’ve performed and been able to be successful whether it’s been one-day cricket or Test match cricket at the top of the order, and taking on some of the best bowlers in the world with the brand new ball. That makes a big difference to any sportsman. Physically I’m in a much different place to what I was when I was 23. I was more like a rugby league player than a cricketer at that stage. I feel I’m more like a cricketer now physically. It’s amazing how things develop and pan out the way they do.”Australia defeated Pakistan in the 2005 Sydney Test by nine wickets, largely due to the first innings double-century by Ricky Ponting and the combined 13-wicket haul from Stuart MacGill and Shane Warne. Five years on, it will be Pakistan fielding two spinners as Danish Kaneria, who claimed seven first innings wickets in his last Sydney appearance, joins Saeed Ajmal on a surface expected to take turn despite its greenish tinge two days from the coin toss.Watson recalls the damage inflicted by Kaneria in 2005 – his maiden Test innings was terminated by the Pakistani leg spinner, caught Asif, for 31 – and expected him to prove a potent addition to the tourist’s attack after missing the Boxing Day Test with a finger injury. “He knows how to bowl well here in Sydney,” Watson said. “He does get a lot of revs on the ball, whether it’s his top-spinner, his leggie or his wrong’un. He will definitely be a big challenge, there’s no doubt about that, and I think it will give them a little more firepower with it spinning in Sydney. It’s going to be a big challenge and as a batting unit hopefully we can make sure he doesn’t have the Test that he really wants.”Asif, meanwhile, will be called upon to lead Pakistan’s attack and replicate the control and accuracy that defined his performance at the MCG last week. The erratic, no-ball prone fast bowler who returned match figures off 0-88 from 18 overs on debut re-emerged in Australia as a purveyor of precision, if not raw pace, to tie down the hosts’ batsmen for extended periods.Still just 27, Asif has before him the opportunity to put right a career that veered wildly off course after his last appearance in Sydney. The path back to the SCG may have been treacherous, but it might yet lead to a bright future.

No treino técnico, ganhou destaque o lateral-direito Buffarini.

Moyes can finally axe Yarmolenko

Having joined West Ham United in what was a £17.5m deal back in the summer of 2018, hopes for the then-28-year-old Andriy Yarmolenko were extremely high at the London Stadium.

Indeed, the Ukraine international had highly impressed during his time with Dynamo Kyiv, scoring a whopping 137 goals and registering 90 assists over his 340 appearances for the Premier Liga side, as well as bagging six goals and six assists over just 26 appearances during a season-long stint at Borussia Dortmund – before making the move to East London.

However, despite now being in his fourth season at West Ham, the £3.6m-rated forward has played a total of just 69 games for the club, something which has largely been down to a succession of serious injuries.

As a result, it has been reported that David Moyes could be looking to move the £115k-per-week man on in the January transfer window, something that would appear to be an incredibly wise move by the 58-year-old Scot – particularly if he manages to bring in one of his own reported targets in the shape of Jonathan David.

Moyes can finally axe Yarmolenko by signing David

Indeed, there is no comparison between the respective player’s returns in recent seasons, but, to illustrate a point, they are as follows.

Over Yarmolenko’s 23 Premier League fixtures in what was undoubtedly his best campaign since joining West Ham, the 32-year-old scored five goals, registered one assist and created six big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.1 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These returns saw the player who Declan Rice once dubbed “special” earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.85, ranking him as the Hammers’ 13th-best performer in the top flight of English football that time around.

For comparison, over David’s 18 Ligue 1 appearances this season alone, the £45m-rated LOSC Lille forward has already scored 11 goals and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 0.9 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player who John Herdman dubbed “fearless” and Hein Vanhaezebrouck labelled a “phenomenon” average a SofaScore match rating of 6.97, ranking him as the French side’s fifth-best player in the league this term.

As such, the numbers very much speak for themselves, and it is clear that Moyes should do all he can to axe Yarmolenko this January, and subsequently put the forward’s huge wages towards landing the 21-year-old David.

Bangladesh have dominated series against Zimbabwe over the past few years but captain Prosper Utseya hopes to reverse that trend in the upcoming five-ODI series starting October 27 in Mirpur.”We will probably start as the underdogs,” Utseya said after reaching Dhaka on Wednesday night. “But there are a few new faces and some of the players have shown good form recently. We will give it our best and try and put pressure on Bangladesh.”Zimbabwe have won only four of their previous 20 matches against Bangladesh. The two teams have already played two bilateral series in 2009, Bangladesh winning both – the most recent 4-1 three months ago in Zimbabwe. Utseya’s team, though, are brimming with confidence after an emphatic 4-1 series win of their own over Kenya.”We have done pretty well against Kenya at home before coming here and hope to carry the momentum into the matches against Bangladesh,” Utseya said. “We are targeting an improved performance.”Bangladesh’s array of spinners proved to be the difference in the series in August. Utseya acknowledged they would be even more of a threat on helpful subcontinental tracks but hoped his batsman would fare better with the added experience against Bangladesh’s slow bowlers. He also felt his bowlers would benefit from the presence of Heath Streak in the coaching staff.Zimbabwe play the first of their two warm-up matches against a BCB XI in Fatullah on Friday. The second is on October 25.

Worcestershire have signed Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan as their overseas player. Shakib is the first Bangladesh player to be signed by a county and will join the team in 2010 following the conclusion of the tour of England, subject to completion of visa arrangements.”I am delighted to be joining Worcestershire in 2010. I followed county cricket as a young player growing up and the opportunity to fulfill one of my ambitions by playing as an overseas player in England is one that excites me greatly,” Shakib said. “I consider it a huge honour to be the first Bangladeshi overseas player in county cricket and can’t wait to give my all for the club on the field.”County cricket has traditionally been the stage for the world’s best players and it is a matter of great pride for me to be associated with a club that has an overwhelming history and had been home to so many legendary cricketers. Particularly as an allrounder, I am thrilled and inspired to be joining the team once graced by Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Kapil Dev.Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, was delighted with the signing of the top-ranked allrounder in ODIs. “I have been following his [Shakib’s] progress for some time and it is clear to me that he is a very good player. His current ICC rankings prove this and I know he is hungry for success. His all-round skills will be a great boost to our young team for the business end of the season.”Shakib captained his country to its first ever overseas Test win earlier this year, against a depleted West Indies side. He filled in after the regular captain Mashrafe Mortaza had to pull out of the tour due to injury. Shakib slammed an unbeaten 96 in the Grenada Test and also picked up the Man-of-the-Series prize for his 13 wickets.

Series win means a lot to team – Clarke

It was fitting for a one-day series that has felt distinctly un-loved that Michael Clarke was presented with his trophy in front of a near empty Ageas Bowl on a chilly September evening

It was fitting for a one-day series that has felt distinctly unloved that Michael Clarke was presented with his trophy in front of a near empty Ageas Bowl on a chilly September evening. For a few reasons this series, although played in front of near full-houses, has not felt as though it has captured the imagination. The weather, which ruined two matches, England’s decision to rest five key players and the general fatigue that follows an intense Ashes campaign were all contributing factors. However, Michael Clarke was not going to allow such excuses to dampen his delight at claiming a trophy, their first in any format in England since winning the one-day series in 2009 by 6-1 margin.”For a lot of people this series doesn’t mean a lot, but to this team it meant a great deal,” he said. “We haven’t performed as well as we would have liked as a one-day unit in the UK over the past couple of years and all the boys have worked exceptionally hard. It’s a great reward for that hard work. Everyone in our changing room was extremely excited and so we should be, we deserve this win.”Clarke was doubtful for the deciding match after another flare up of his chronic back problem, which has been a talking point throughout the tour. Although not moving entirely freely – and he admitted the back was “pretty sore” after the match – he contributed 75 in the series-defining stand of 163 with Shane Watson.”I certainly wouldn’t have taken the field if I thought I was going to let the boys down,” he said. “If I couldn’t perform at my best I wouldn’t have taken the field, but I certainly didn’t want to miss this game. My back was certainly sore over the last few days and it’s quite sore now, but we won so it was worth it. It was nice to contribute as well, I had the easy job standing at the other end to Watto – the way he played made my job a lot easier. It’s a nice feeling to be sat here as winners of the series.”For Watson, who became a figure of fun during the height of his lbw and DRS issues in the Tests, this was a pleasing way to conclude a tour where, barring a niggle at the tail-end of the Durham Test, he has been able to stay injury free. “It’s always nice when you day turns out well,” he said. “Everyone knew how important it was to win the one-day series. It’s a really exciting time in Australian cricket to see how we are evolving.”Clarke will now return to Australia – which may not feel like home after such a stretch overseas – but only for two weeks before, fitness permitting, he takes the one-day squad to India for a seven-match one-day series. That does not seem ideal ahead of another Ashes series, although care is being taken by the selectors not to repeat the mistakes of 2010-11 when a similar trip meant very little preparation time for the Tests, but Clarke sees this one-day team as an equally important element.”The India series is pretty important to is, we want to get back to No. 1,” he said. “We need to get more consistent away from home and this series was a good start.”Eoin Morgan, meanwhile, was left to reflect on England’s self-inflicted damage in the first half of the run chase with the run outs of Kevin Pietersen and Luke Wright for ducks which undid an impressive final 20 overs with the ball.”At one stage, they looked like getting about 350,” he said. So to restrict them to under 300 on a very good wicket, we felt it was a chaseable total. It was disappointing not to get closer, or even over the line. Two run-outs don’t help. We lost wickets throughout the whole innings, didn’t have a substantial innings from any individual or a big partnership.”
