Sri Lanka’s old guard combined to ease to a 112-run victory over New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium. Kumar Sangakkara made his first ODI century since June 2008, supported by a controversial 66 from Mahela Jayawardene, to haul Sri Lanka up to 265 before Muttiah Muralitharan spun New Zealand to defeat with 4 for 25.Coming into the tournament as one of the favourites, Sri Lanka have not quite convinced so far and but for their three most experienced players might have struggled again. Instead the finish was the kind of one-sided result that has epitomised Group A.New Zealand, though, will rue their misfortune when Jayawardene was reprieved at a critical moment. Sri Lanka had lost both openers and were struggling to get on top of the New Zealand slow bowlers when, in the 24th over, Jayawardene chipped a return catch to Nathan McCullum. It went low to McCullum’s right and the bowler dived full-length to scoop the ball centimetres off the turf. The batsman stood his ground and the decision was sent upstairs. Side-on replays seemed to clearly show McCullum’s fingers under the ball but a front-on shot, as it so often does, created doubt that the third umpire, Amiesh Saheba, ruled on. Before then Jayawardene had scrambled for 50 deliveries to make 26 but silkily added a further 40 at a run a ball and Sri Lanka never looked back.Sangakkara helped himself to a century that he’s been waiting 64 matches for. Looking typically unhurried, he was content to work the ball around early on before unfurling some of the stylish strokes that are his hallmark as the innings went on. One six, eased down the ground off Scott Styris, told of a batsman in totalSmart stats

The 145-run partnership between Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene is the second-highest for Sri Lanka against New Zealand in a World Cup match.

Sangakkara and Jayawardene have put together 4724 partnership runs in ODIs, which is the highest by a non-opening pair. This was also their tenth century partnership in ODIs, which puts them in second place, next only to the Sachin Tendulkar-Rahul Dravid pair, who have 11.

In World Cups, this was their third century partnership in ten innings, but the first against a Test-playing team. Only three other non-opening pairs have got three hundred stands in World Cups.

The 112-run margin of victory is Sri Lanka’s third-highest against New Zealand.

Muttiah Muralitharan’s bowling returns of 4 for 25 is his second-best in World Cups, next only to his 4 for 19 against Ireland in 2007.

New Zealand’s total of 153 is their fourth-lowest in a World Cup match, and their poorest against Sri Lanka.

control. The verbal exchanges that Jayawardene got involved with after his escape only served to fire him up and he was soon exhibiting the fluent form that had deserted him since his century against Canada in Sri Lanka’s opening game. The pair added 145 and the importance of the stand was demonstrated by what followed. Sangakkara rushed to his century with four boundaries in six deliveries but was out soon after for 111. Following his dismissal Sri Lanka lost five wickets for 55 in the final 8.2 overs. That they even got so many was almost entirely down to Angelo Mathews, who swatted 41 from 35 balls to thwart New Zealand’s fightback. In the end, the collapse was irrelevant but in the knockout stages, opposition teams will know beneath Sri Lanka’s top order is a soft underbelly waiting to be exposed. New Zealand would have backed themselves to make a better fist of chasing but – despite dew, on a ground that will host the World Cup final, hampering the Sri Lanka spinners – Muralitharan and Mendis choked them into submission. The early work was done by the quicks when Brendon McCullum was given out by the TV umpire after Jayawardene, of all people, claimed a low catch off Mathews. There was some uncertainty as the take was almost spilled at the last moment. TV replays were not entirely certain but, unlike the first time, the right decision was made and McCullum was sent on his was for 14. After Guptill fell for 13, Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor threatened to make a match of it but the spinners took over.Mendis’ mystery may have faded with exposure but his variations proved too much for Ryder who nibbed a carrom-ball behind for a 23-ball 19. Muralitharan’s introduction had been delayed after he picked up an injury while batting. Despite hobbling around, he was still devastating when he finally got into the attack in the 18th over.A doosra took care of Kane Williamson for 5 before he landed the killer blow by spinning one back into Taylor’s pads. Despite a big stride and a review, Taylor was rightly given out for 33 and his team never looked like competing. Scott Styris chipped a return catch to Muralitharan, who belied his injury to spring up and snaffle the chance, and Nathan McCullum and James Franklin soon followed. Between them Mendis and Muralitharan took six wickets for 49 in 14 overs.Unlike the frenzied excitement in Group B, the qualifiers in Group A are already settled. Sri Lanka are guaranteed to finish second whatever happens between Australia and Pakistan, which might well leave them in line for a contest against the World Cup mysterybox, England, in the quarter finals.Match Timeline

Time to blood a new wicketkeeper – Waqar

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has said it is time for a new wicketkeeper to be blooded in the side as a replacement for Kamran Akmal

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has said it is time for a new wicketkeeper to be blooded in the side as a replacement for Kamran Akmal”This debate over the wicketkeeper’s performance is a difficult one but I think the Pakistan team now needs a younger wicketkeeper who can carry the load for the next few years,” Waqar told reporters in Lahore. “It’s the right time to groom a wicketkeeper.” Akmal’s glovework has come in for sharp criticism in recent times, especially during Pakistan’s tour of Australia in early 2010 as well as in the World Cup, during which he spilled several chances.Pakistan lost in the semi-finals of the World Cup to India and Waqar said that while the loss was “disappointing”, the team had done well to reach the last four and he advised against making any sweeping changes. “It’s routine for people to ask for radical changes after a team crashes out of the World Cup. I agree that it is time to build a new team but that does not mean you replace all the players with youngsters, as was done after the 2003 World Cup. We need to maintain a balance between experience and youth which will ensure stability in the team.”Waqar, who still has a year left in his coaching contract, said Pakistan allowed India to “overwhelm” them and the team failed to handle the pressure at several key points. “We also lost wickets at the wrong time. But these are all excuses. We missed various chances [in the field]. Those catches cost us heavily because you can’t allow so much leverage to a strong batting line up.”Mistakes were there aplenty. We mistimed our Powerplays, had a wrong batting order or even bowling combination but these are all part of the game. What’s important is that you learn from your mistakes.”Waqar was in Lahore to meet PCB chief Ijaz Butt. The Pakistan selectors meet later today to select the squad for Pakistan’s tour of West Indies that begins on April 18.

Lahore Eagles and KRL in summit clash

A round-up of the semi-finals of the One-Day National Cup Division Two tournament in Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jan-2011An unbeaten century from Rana Adnan and a collective bowling performance helped Lahore Eagles secure a place in the final by beating State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) by 73 runs in Karachi. Adnan’s 100 off 115 balls held the innings together and his partnership of 77 with Hamza Paracha, who made 51, set a platform for a considerable total. The middle and lower order, however, failed to contribute and Lahore slumped from 212 for 3 to 265 for 8. Jalat Khan took 3 for 53 for SBP while new-ball bowler, Mohammad Naved, was economical during his seven-over spell of 1 for 21.SBP’s chase never got off the ground. Their openers fell for single-digit scores and, after a 63-run stand for the third wicket, the steady fall of wickets resumed. Adnan Raees top scored with 49 and no one else got over 40. Lahore’s new-ball bowler, Emmad Ali, took 3 for 34 while Saad Nasim and Waqas Aslam took two apiece. SBP were eventually bowled out for 192 in 40 overs.Riding on Azhar Ali’s unbeaten hundred, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) chased the target of 273 to beat Karachi Zebras by six wickets and an over to spare in Hyderabad to secure their berth in the final. The chase had begun poorly, with KRL slipping to 19 for 3, before Ali led the revival along with Bazid Khan, who made 50. Bazid departed with the score on 117 but Ali Khan entered and blitzed 80 off 58 balls to shut Karachi out of the contest.Ali’s century had helped overcome Karachi’s strong total of 272 for 9, which was built around Asif Zakir’s run-a-ball 110. Rameez Aziz payed a supporting hand with 40 but there were no other contributions of note. Mohammad Irfan claimed 3 for 46 for KRL while Nauman Ali and Saeed Anwar jnr took two wickets apiece.

Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday tickets

The Daily Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has been left wowed by some news that he has now heard coming out of Sunderland before their Friday game against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Lowdown: Big ticket sales

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Michael Walker has revealed that the Wearside club have already sold 35,000 tickets for their first leg of their play-off tie at home to the Owls on Friday night, and are aiming to sell more than 45,000 in total.

That would be the biggest crowd outside of the Premier League so far this season, beating the 38,000 who showed up to watch the Black Cats take on Doncaster earlier this year.

The Latest: Edwards reacts

Edwards gave his instant reaction to the news on the tickets, calling it ‘remarkable’.

Considering that the Stadium of Light faithful are in the third tier of English football, and it would be the biggest crowd outside of the top flight, it would really be a monumental achievement to get that many supporters into the stadium.

The Verdict: Support needed

In truth, the Black Cats need all of the support that they can get as they look to get past a Wednesday team that finished above them in the League One table.

They both beat each other at their own homes in the league campaign, and so Alex Neil will be hoping that his side can repeat the trick on Friday, banking a healthy lead to take to Sheffield next week.

Nonetheless, these are two massive clubs in the English football pyramid, and so there should be a feisty atmosphere for a game that really doesn’t belong in League One.

Villa: Jones drops Kamara claim

Aston Villa will pursue a summer move for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The lowdown: Premier League interest

The 22-year-old has been widely linked with a move to England previously, with West Ham, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Leeds United all credited with an interest.

Out of contract at the end of the season (Transfermarkt), Kamara is expected to be hot property in the summer as clubs vie to land the coveted youth international – who was hailed as “exceptional” by RMC Sport commentator Jonatan MacHardy – on a free transfer.

It now appears that Villa manager Steven Gerrard may also be an admirer after the 41-year-old was spotted in attendance during Marseille’s 3-2 Ligue 1 victory over Nantes recently…

The latest: Jones makes exciting claim

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has claimed that the nine-cap France under-21 starlet is ‘on the radar’ at Villa Park and that Gerrard was indeed on a scouting mission.

When asked if the Villa boss was in Marseille to watch potential transfer targets, the journalist replied: “I think it’s quite likely the case, especially Kamara.

“I think he is somebody that’s been on their radar a little while and they’re currently weighing up who is going to fit best into the team in that position.

“Steven Gerrard is currently going around a few places and just seeing for himself exactly how he thinks their personality on the pitch would fit in with what his vision is at Aston Villa.”

The verdict: Shrewd move

Signing Kamara for nothing would be a superb piece of business as Gerrard attempts to bolster the Villa ranks this summer.

Their midfield department is currently made up of John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, Morgan Sanson and Marvelous Nakamba, although both Sanson and Nakamba have been linked with departures.

This season, the defensive-minded midfielder – who is a close match for Liverpool star Fabinho stylistically (FB Ref) – has earned a superb 7.13 Sofascore rating whilst enjoying 82.4 touches, making two tackles and winning 4.7 duels per game in the French top flight.

With the future of Sanson in doubt and Carney Chukwuemeka still developing, adding a player of Kamara’s quality to the Villa squad without any transfer fee is a no-brainer.

In other news, journalist urges Steven Gerrard to focus on key position at Aston Villa. Read more here.
