For the second time in three years, a Maharaja will take on one of India’s most celebrated cricketers in an election to take charge of a state cricket association. The final nominations for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) polls, to be held on November 21, are in and its incumbent president, Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the Maharaja of Mysore, will seek re-election against Anil Kumble, India’s highest wicket-taker and former captain.Three years ago, Wadiyar made a triumphant entry into cricket administration defeating G R Viswanath for the position of president. This is Kumble’s first entry into the electoral process connected with cricket adminstration, and he will be conesting with his former India and Karnataka teammates Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad on his side.Srinath is running for the secretary’s post against A V Jayaprakash, the former Test umpire, who happened to be on the field during Kumble’s 10-74 versus Pakistan in 1999, and Siddalingaswamy. Prasad is a nominee for one of three vice-president’s posts and he is up against umpire Jayaprakash and five others from what is called the “Maharaja Group”.Many a heavyweight from politics and business, and several former cricketers, can be found in the list of 82 nominees for the KSCA elections.Amongst the vice-presidential candidates alongside Prasad are former India allrounder Roger Binny, and a long time KSCA member P Sadananda Maiya. Maiya belongs to the famous MTR Group business family and is a PhD in nanotechnology who worked alongside Sharad Pawar in the agricultural ministry. M R Srinivasa Prasad, former Karnataka batsman and now vice-president at Fidelity Business Systems, will be contesting for one of the posts on the managing committee.Along with the scion of the Mysore royal family, the ‘Maharaja’s’ men in the mix feature Rajya Sabha MP and Bellary mine owner Anil Lad, who is in for one of the six managing committee seats from the district clubs, and Panduranga Shetty, who heads the trust that runs the RV Group of Educational Institutions. Shetty is up against Prasad and Binny in the contest for vice president.There are 24 posts up to be contested: one each for president, secretary and treasurer, three vice-presidents and 18 managing committee members (six each from individual members, Bangalore clubs and district clubs). In all, KSCA has 229 clubs and 1200 individual members who can cast votes in the election. Those elected serve three-year terms.

Virender Sehwag, the India opener, has been named the Test Player of the Year during the 2010 ICC Awards ceremony in Bangalore. He won the award, the first of his career, ahead of Sachin Tendulkar, Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla, who were the other nominees in the category.”It’s fantastic to win the award, to take over the title from Gautam Gambhir,” Sehwag said after receiving the prize from Courtney Walsh. “I think I got motivated when Gambhir got this award last time, I was discussing with him that I hope I get it this time and I got it. I’m a huge fan of Test cricket and I love to play it more than Twenty20 or one-day cricket.”When I was growing up, I was playing lot of 10-over, 12-over games, so I had to score off every ball, same thing I have continued. I followed my instincts and played in the same way in T20, ODI and Tests. It’s a great strength to have.”Sehwag scored 1282 runs in ten Tests at an average of 85.46 between August 2009 and 2010, which was the period under consideration for the award. He was also named in the Test Team of the Year, which was captained by MS Dhoni.

Há uma ordem expressa vinda do departamento de futebol profissional, mais especificamente do diretor Alexandre Mattos: “É bom? Contrata”. Mattos deixa João Paulo Sampaio, coordenador das categorias de base do clube, à vontade para acioná-lo caso uma negociação esteja muito complicada. “Aí eu entro rasgando”, costuma dizer o dirigente.

O Palmeiras quer ter em sua base o maior número possível de atletas promissores do país – e até do exterior, caso do atacante paraguaio Aníbal, por exemplo. Para auxiliar neste projeto, o clube fortaleceu o seu departamento de captação de atletas, que hoje conta com cinco pessoas. A função deles é monitorar o desempenho de garotos em torneios, escolinhas, projetos sociais e comunidades, além de manter uma rede de contatos com centros formadores espalhados pelo Brasil.

Fernando, por exemplo, chamou a atenção defendendo a AMDH (Associação Mineira de Desenvolvimento Humano) na Taça BH de 2016. O Palmeiras apresentou o seu projeto ao garoto, venceu a concorrência de outros grandes clubes e firmou com ele, inicialmente, um vínculo válido até outubro de 2019. As boas atuações do atacante na base lhe renderam, no fim de 2017, um aumento salarial e a ampliação do contrato até outubro de 2022.

Assinar contratos relativamente curtos, muitas vezes por empréstimo, tem sido uma prática comum no clube. O zagueiro Pedrão, que chamou a atenção quando estava no Água Santa, e o volante Gabriel Furtado, que era do Paraná, foram comprados após períodos de empréstimo. O próximo a ser adquirido deve ser o atacante Yan, que veio do Vitória em 2017, também por empréstimo, em troca de Cleiton Xavier. O clube gostaria de ter feito o mesmo com o meia José Aldo, que estava emprestado pelo Guarani de Palhoça, mas se irritou com o empresário dele e desistiu de mantê-lo.

Guilherme Vieira, artilheiro palmeirense no título da Copa do Brasil sub-17 do ano passado, está emprestado pelo Audax até fevereiro de 2019. O Palmeiras tem opção de compra. O meia Alan Guimarães, considerado a maior joia da base alviverde, foi “achado” antes mesmo de o departamento de captação se fortalecer: ele veio em 2014, após se destacar jogando futsal na escolinha da Mercedes Benz em São Bernardo.

Os frutos dessa postura agressiva já estão aparecendo: todas as equipes de base do Palmeiras são fortes. No ano passado, o clube foi à final em todas as categorias: sub-11, sub-13, sub-15, sub-17 e sub-20.

Evitar os contratos muito longos logo de cara é uma forma de evitar gastos desnecessários. Até 2013, quando começou a reformulação na base, o Palmeiras mantinha uma equipe B para atletas de até 23 anos que não conseguiam espaço no profissional. Essa equipe não existe mais.

O Palmeiras entende que os atletas que são acima da média, como Gabriel Jesus, acabam integrados ao elenco profissional antes dos 18 anos. Aconteceu com Neymar, Gabigol, Lucas Moura, Vinicius Júnior e Alexandre Pato, por exemplo.

Os atletas que não conseguem espaço no profissional, mas têm potencial, são emprestados para que terminem suas formações em outros lugares. É o caso do lateral-direito Mailton, que foi cedido ao Santa Cruz após a Copinha deste ano, do meia Vitinho, hoje emprestado ao Barcelona B, e do atacante Gabriel Barbosa, que está no SPAL (ITA).

Quando o clube entende que um atleta não tem espaço na equipe de cima e que há garotos mais jovens com potencial maior, a estratégia é rescindir o contrato, manter parte dos direitos econômicos e liberá-los. Aconteceu com o zagueiro Estigarribia e com o atacante Iacovelli no ano passado. Vitão e Papagaio, das mesmas posições e mais jovens que eles, são vistos como mais promissores.

O elenco profissional do Palmeiras conta hoje com oito atletas formados na base: o goleiro Daniel Fuzato, os zagueiros Pedrão e Thiago Martins, os laterais Victor Luis e Luan Cândido e os atacantes Fernando e Papagaio.

Indeed, the £75k-per-week Doucoure was hailed a “complete” midfielder by former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian stating: “Abdoulaye is a fantastic midfielder, a complete midfielder. He can defend well. He is a box-to-box midfielder. He can bring energy to the club and a different quality.”

The Frenchman was initially a favoured player under Lampard, playing the full 90 minutes over six games, but has recently not seen as much game time – playing just six minutes in the victory over Man United and being on the bench against Leicester City.

Sunderland have seen plenty of players come and go from the Wearside club over the years during several transfer windows.

However, as has happened with many clubs, they don’t always end up securing every player that they get linked with.

One prime example of a player that the Black Cats were looking to sign and will now be having nightmares over is Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

According to the Sunderland Echo, the striker “was a target of Peter Reid during his formulative years at Ajax.”

However, a deal for the Sweden international “couldn’t be sealed” before he eventually joined Juventus in August 2004.

Throughout an impressive and very long career, Ibrahimovic has played for clubs such as Malmo, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Barcelona and LA Galaxy.

With a total of 811 club appearances under his belt, the 40-year-old has scored 492 goals, provided 201 assists and won numerous team titles and individual awards, highlighting just how much of an icon he is.

On the international stage, Ibrahimovic has been a vital figure for his country by scoring 62 goals in 121 appearances.

This season has seen the veteran score eight goals and provide two assists in 19 Serie A appearances for Milan, showing that despite his advanced age, he still has the knack for finding the back of the net in one of Europe’s top divisions.

Labelled as an “unstoppable” player by Gianfranco Zola, as well as having the “technique of Lionel Messi, the character of Muhammad Ali, and the strength of Mike Tyson,” by Mino Raiola, Ibrahimovic could have been an incredible asset for Sunderland had they been able to strike a deal for him all those years ago.

With the benefit of hindsight, securing a deal for the centre-forward should have been a top priority for the Wearside club, no matter what the cost implications would have been.

While there would have been no guarantee over how long he would have been at Sunderland had they been able to sign him, it still would have been a great sight for the fans to see such an exciting and talented goalscorer in their squad.

Having come from behind on two occasions to secure a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be aiming to beat City and cement their place in the final this time around.

One player that didn’t feature against City last weekend that we feel should be in the team this time around is Kostas Tsimikas.

Having played through the entire 90 minutes in midweek, the left-back delivered a performance that will have given Klopp a big quandary over who he should pick for that position on Saturday.

As well as providing two assists, the Greek international racked up four key passes in total with four crosses, three long balls and completed two dribbles.

This shows just how capable and dangerous he can be on the ball for his side.

From a defensive point of view, the 25-year-old made two tackles, won 10 duels and didn’t get dribbled past on even one occasion.

This display ultimately earned Tsimikas an overall match rating of 8.2/10, making him the second-highest rated Liverpool player on the day according to SofaScore.

The Liverpool Echo said that the full-back was “enthusiastic and decisive both in defending and going forward.”

The £9m-rated defender’s performance also caught the attention of Liverpool journalist Leanne Prescott who described him as “energetic, relentless and makes the difference going forward.”

Taking all of this into account, Tsimikas certainly has what it takes to cause City some problems on the pitch with his ability on and off the ball.

Also, with Andy Robertson failing to make even one tackle or interception in the 2-2 game against Pep Guardiola’s side last weekend as well as winning just one of the six duels he was involved in, this could sway Klopp into giving the Greek full-back a chance to shine once again.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s clash, the Liverpool boss could have a big decision to make over who he picks to start in the left-back position.
