Aston Villa: Villans offered Georginio Wijnaldum

Aston Villa are one of several clubs to have been approached by Georginio Wijnaldum’s representatives over a possible January move, 90min report.

The Lowdown: Wijnaldum’s PSG struggles

The Netherlands international, who Mauricio Pochettino has described as ‘aggressive’, hasn’t exactly had the best of starts to life at Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Liverpool to join on a free transfer over the summer.

Wijnaldum is thought to be on a salary worth over £300,000-a-week at the Parc des Princes, however, just 10 of his 20 appearances this season have come as a starter.

It now seems as if a return to the Premier League could be on the cards at the start of 2022, and Villa have been name-checked as a possible destination.

The Latest: Villa yet to say no…

90min shared a story on Thursday regarding Wijnaldum’s future, with the player’s representatives sounding out a number of Premier League clubs over a winter window transfer.

Arsenal, Everton, Leicester City, Newcastle United, Tottenham and West Ham have all been approached regarding a move for Wijnaldum along with Villa and are yet to dismiss the idea of a potential loan transfer.

The Verdict: Avoid…

Steven Gerrard is thought to be after a defensive midfielder in the New Year, so Wijnaldum ticks that box, as well as being able to turn out in a central and attacking midfield role.

However, his extortionate salary could be enough to put Johan Lange and co off any temporary move, despite having plenty of Premier League experience.

Villa may possibly be better off looking at the bigger picture under Gerrard and therefore snubbing a move for Wijnaldum in favour of a permanent signing who isn’t the wrong side of 30.

Someone like Glen Kamara could be a more realistic transfer, with the Rangers man linked with a move to the Midlands to reunite with Gerrard.

Relieved Vettori praises team work

Having won his first toss of what until this evening had been a disappointing tour, Vettori played a stellar role with the ball to help New Zealand sneak a humdinger at the R Premadasa Stadium

After a four games on tour without a win, it was a relief for Daniel Vettori to see some smiles on his players’ faces. Having won his first toss of what until this evening had been a disappointing tour, Vettori played a stellar role with the ball to help New Zealand sneak a humdinger at the R Premadasa Stadium.Vettori was typically deadpan at the post-match presentation, but there was an undeniable air of achievement when he looked back at a come-from-behind win. New Zealand’s total of 141 looked in severe danger of being overhauled with overs to spare when Tillakaratne Dilshan smacked four fours of the first over, bowled by comeback man Shane Bond, but a series of spectacular fielding efforts, Vettori’s guile and Jacob Oram’s hat-trick pulled the carpet from under Sri Lanka’s feet.”We had targeted getting into the middle order and managed to get a couple of the good players cheaply. It always gave us a chance but we knew Dilshan’s was the big wicket,” said Vettori. “Dilshan is playing exceptionally well and when he’s in full flight like that it is hard to know where to stop him but fortunately once we did we put in a very complete performance. The way we fought back, I think that’s what everyone has wanted to see, and we really showed it.”With a slight smile threatening to creep up on his face, Vettori was happy to concentrate on the events of this evening, including two excellent moments from Jesse Ryder in the field. First he cut off and released the ball at backward point to execute a direct hit that saw off Mahela Jayawardene, and then he plucked a good low catch at backward point to cut Dilshan off on 57. “He’s a supreme athlete, but sometimes his physique doesn’t give that away,” said Vettori of Ryder. “He’s one of the more talented guys in the way he moves and he can do pretty much everything in the field. That run-out gave the team a massive lift and he added a great catch. We need guys stepping up like that. I thought Brendon McCullum was outstanding in the field, Ross Taylor gave everything, all the guys put it on the line. There wasn’t a lot I could have asked more for.”Dilshan looked like a man with a train to catch, clattering four successive boundaries in Bond’s opening over for New Zealand in almost two years. Despite the onslaught, New Zealand dismissed Sanath Jayasuriya and Jayawardene cheaply and that had given Vettori hope. “You just try and stick to your plans. In Twenty20 the run-rate is still high and even though it’s accepted that it’s not that hard, you get new batsmen in and look to put pressure on them to make it difficult for the tail.”Bond pulled the game back for New Zealand, allowing just 11 off his last three overs, while Oram, after a poor first over, hit back well at the death, taking a wicket with the last ball of 17th over and two in two when he was left to defend nine off the last over. “He [Bond] was fine. I think he just wanted to get on with things,” said Vettori. “Every bowler got better and better as their spells continued. I was satisfied with all the bowling. Everybody stepped up to the mark. Jacob had a tough start but the way he bowled that last over was fantastic. Kyle Mills was unlucky. Ian Butler takes wickets when we need them.”But the pick of the lot was Vettori himself. He came on in the seventh over and that went for three runs and yielded Kumar Sangakkara’s wicket. It was a clever delivery, with plenty of dip that sucked Sangakkara into a chip to cover. With Ian Butler taking two in two overs, Vettori dried up the runs with lovely variations in pace. Only eight runs came in his next three overs, which also included the wicket of the debutant Gihan Rupasinghe. Those four overs were mesmeric to watch and left Sri Lanka floundering. The final result left Sangakkara bitter and asking his players to rethink their roles in the team. After getting off to a roaring start, Sri Lanka lost regular wickets and failed to close out the deal – it once again highlighted the frailty oft their middle order. “It’s a big deal when we restrict a side to 141 and get one of the best starts we could ask for, only to not capitalise,” he said. “All the players have to take a good, hard look at themselves and ask themselves how they’re going to take responsibility. It’s hard to imagine that we lost this one.”

Tom Fellows could be WBA’s next Phillips

After getting relegated from the Premier League last year, West Brom are now firmly in the race to win promotion back to the top flight immediately, with Valerien Ismael’s side currently third in the Championship table with 32 points on the board from 17 games.

One man who has played a significant part in West Brom’s current campaign is Matt Phillips, who has appeared in all but one of their league games, scoring three goals and providing two assists in the process whilst playing across a number of attacking positions but predominantly as a right winger.

As Phillips has now hit the age of 30, there’s every possibility that the Midlands club could be looking to bring in a new attacking player at some point in the future when the Scotland international eventually leaves.

With this in mind, the Baggies could already have their ideal successor to the winger, who has 26 goals and 26 assists in 188 appearances for the club – namely 18-year-old prodigy Tom Fellows.

As a product of West Brom’s youth academy, the teenager has made 35 appearances for their under-18 side, scoring 12 goals and providing nine assists along the way. Fellows has also made 10 appearances for the under-23 side, with one goal and two assists to his name, highlighting his attacking talents.

The youngster has had a taste of senior football at The Hawthorns with one appearance under his belt for Ismael’s side, which came during their 6-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

Despite the disappointing result, the match against Mikel Arteta’s side saw Fellows earn a respectable overall match rating of 6.4/10, making him one of West Brom’s highest-rated players on the night according to SofaScore.

Fellows has also been highlighted in the past by under-18 boss Peter Gilbert for having “physical aspects which can hurt teams, no matter which position he plays in”. That suggests that he has what it takes to become a versatile player across the pitch in the same way that Phillips has this season, as well as a real attacking danger given the number of goals and assists he has racked up at youth level.

Looking ahead to the future, even though Phillips put pen to paper on a new deal at West Brom which will keep him at the club until 2024, his presence and experience could really help Fellows develop his game so thar he can eventually grow into a long-term replacement for the 30-year-old, thus saving the club millions in potential transfer fees.

Dorival esconde time, treina bola parada e antecipa concentração

– Não vou revelar o time.

Tredwell helps Kent to victory

A round-up from the final day of the latest County Championship matches as Kent surge to an innings victory against Glamorgan

Cricinfo staff18-Jul-2009Division TwoKent ran through Glamorgan cheaply on the final day in Cardiff to secure victory by an innings and 45 runs. Kent resumed their first innings on 444 for 4. Robert Key went on to a career-best 270, with 24 fours and four sixes, and declared the innings on 557 soon after Justin Kemp was out for 90 off 115 balls, midway through the opening session. Key and Kemp added 113 runs in 14.4 overs to extend the lead to 245 but Glamorgan only needed to bat through the remainder of the day to secure a draw. After five overs of the hosts’ second innings, though, Glamorgan had lost three wickets – Wayne Parnell nipped out Gareth Rees and Ben Wright, while Amjad Khan accounted for Herschelle Gibbs. Glamorgan appeared to be recovering through an 82-run stand between Jamie Dalrymple and Mike Powell before Dalrymple edged a wide ball from Khan to second slip. Powell, who reached his 50 off 66 balls, did not last much longer and was caught at short leg by Key off James Tredwell shortly before the tea break, leaving Glamorgan on 135 for 6. Robert Croft and James Harris defended for 17 overs before Ryan McLaren struck twice in the space of five balls to edge Kent closer to victory. The final wicket fell to Tredwell as he finished with 4 for 48 and came with 17.1 overs remaining.A hit by the rain and a slow pitch at Guildford between Essex and Surrey finished the inevitable draw as Hashim Amla continued his strong start in county cricket. The game ended in poor light when Mark Pettini was struck a painful blow from a bouncer by Tom Linley and the ground was also being affected by a power failure which meant the scoreboards weren’t working. Surrey added another 64 runs to their overnight total, before declaring on 352 for 8 to deny Essex a final bowling point with Stewart Walters having taken his maiden hundred to 142. Essex’s second innings began poorly, as John Maunders played across the line to Jade Dernbach for a fourth-ball duck. However, a 141-run partnership between Varun Chopra (85) and Amla (81 not out) used up much of the remaining time before the umpires took the players off.

A memorable partnership, and a few concerns

Plays of the day from the third day of the first Test between England and Australia in Cardiff

Alex Brown and Peter English in Cardiff10-Jul-2009

Aleem Dar signals a no-ball after Andrew Flintoff was pulled for six by Ricky Ponting•Getty Images

Partnership of the day
Simon Katich’s dismissal for a well-struck 122 ended a magnificent 239-run stand with Ricky Ponting; the fifth-highest second-wicket partnership by an Australian pair in Ashes contests. Not since Ian Chappell and Rick McCosker in 1975 have an Australian duo posted a total of such magnitude for the second wicket in England. Ponting’s eventual dismissal for 150 placed him on 11,110 runs (the uber-Nelson?) and just 64 runs shy of Allan Border’s mark. Border is the highest Test run-scorer among Australian batsmen, and third over all behind Sachin Tendulkar (12,773) and Brian Lara (11,953).Concern of the day I
Michael Hussey. Innings of 150 and 62 in the England Lions tour match now appear a false dawn after the once-mighty left-hander was dismissed for a scratchy three by James Anderson. Since the start of the last Australian summer, Hussey has scored just 325 runs at 21.66, including eight single-digit returns. He has not posted a Test century since last year’s tour of India, and will find himself under increasing pressure to retain his place in the top-order should his slump extend much deeper into this series.Concern of the day II
England’s old-ball options. The hosts’ much-vaunted attack has looked positively pedestrian after the shine has gone from the ball. Cool temperatures and a lush outfield have not been conducive to reverse swing, while Graeme Swann, England’s frontline spinner, has lacked the penetration of recent series. Anderson and Andrew Flintoff have threatened on occasion, but the same cannot be said for Stuart Broad, who has nagged rather than imposed thus far in the match.Shot of the day
The third day of the first Test was notable for attrition rather than aggression, but for one brief moment, Ponting applied the foot to the pedal. With trademark speed and timing, Ponting dispatched a short, sharp Flintoff bouncer over the head of Monty Panesar at fine leg. England’s displeasure was compounded when it emerged Aleem Dar had signaled no-ball. A bad session for England had just got worse. Are you Harmy in disguise?
Andrew Flintoff tried to inspire his team-mates after day two by reminding them of Australia’s collapse at The Oval in 2005. When he took the new ball in the first session it was more like Brisbane in 2006-07, when Steve Harmison started the series with a wide to second slip and England tumbled to a 5-0 defeat. Flintoff’s ball to Simon Katich wasn’t quite that wayward – and it didn’t have a demoralising impact of his side – but Matt Prior was required to leap in between first and second slips to make the take.Byes of the day
Prior was back in action, or inaction as it turned out, twice in two remarkable deliveries from Paul Collingwood. On a day when Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar both struggled to turn the ball one iota, up popped Collingwood with the rippers of the match. He marked his second over with two fast offcutters in quick succession which, with a puff of dust, burst past Marcus North’s outside edge, and way out of the reach of Prior’s gloves behind the stumps. They were Prior’s first byes of the series, but with Australia’s lead growing, England weren’t sure whether to treat them as a good omen or ill. If Hauritz has a hefty lead to play with tomorrow, the advantage of bowling last on this track may not be England’s to exploit.
