Kamran Khan, the Rajasthan Royals left-arm seamer, has been reported for a suspect action. Rudi Koertzen and Gary Baxter, the on-field umpires for the IPL game between Rajasthan and Chennai Super Kings at Centurion on April 30, said they had concerns over Kamran, 18, and hence requested the authorities to review his action. The two on-field umpires and TV umpire Amish Saheba reviewed footage of the game and believed Kamran’s action needed further scrutiny. The matter has now been referred to the Rajasthan management and the IPL’s technical committee.”The matter has now been referred to the team management of the Rajasthan Royals and the IPL’s technical committee as per the laws of cricket that govern our game,” Lalit Modi, chairman and commissioner of the IPL, said. “I now await the report from the technical committee and will then decide on the future course of action.”Kamran can continue to play until he is proven guilty of an illegal action. In five IPL games he has taken six wickets at 20.66, limping off the field during his last over against Chennai on Thursday.Shane Warne, the Rajasthan captain, said the team would back Kamran wholly. “Kamran has made a big impact in this IPL. He is a young man with a great work ethic and a huge appetite to learn,” said Warne. “With these attributes in mind, we are confident that this issue will be resolved very quickly. However, our first priority is a swift recovery from his knee injury from the last game. We currently await a full medical report after his MRI scan today.”Kamran, from Azamgarh in the north-Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, was spotted by Rajasthan team director Darren Berry at a talent scouting camp earlier this year. He impressed Warne instantly after bowling one over against the Cape Cobras in a warm-up game played a couple of days before the IPL kicked off. He was the bowler chosen by Warne to bowl the decisive ‘super over’ in the win against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Nielsen wants new Twenty20 approach

Tim Nielsen has conceded Australia need to revisit their approach to Twenty20 to avoid a similar fate at the next World Twenty20

Tim Nielsen says the Australian think-tank needs to reconsider how Twenty20 is viewed•AFP

Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen has conceded his team needs to revisit its approach to Twenty20 to avoid being bundled out of the next ICC World Twenty20. It is less than a year until the next tournament, in the West Indies, and Nielsen wants individual players to consider “where they’re at” so the selectors can prepare a competitive squad.”We have to start approaching it differently when we play the Twenty20 stuff in our normal calendar, because we’ve seen those as one-off games and it’s difficult to get guys across overseas, or it’s maybe been seen as a chance for blokes to have an extra day’s rest here and there,” Nielsen told the . “We might have to revisit that. The players will have to think about where they’re at with it, and where we go from here.”One of Australia’s problems is the lack of Twenty20s that their stars play. The domestic competition takes place while the Test and ODI season is in full swing, so fringe internationals have more opportunity to take part than men like Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey.National teams are restricted to three Twenty20 internationals per season, except for the ICC World Twenty20, and Australia have treated those games as a chance for the busiest players to rest. But that contributed to the Australians’ early exit this year and Nielsen has spent the past few days analysing the disappointing result.”I didn’t have much sleep last night, tossing and turning about what we could have done better,” Nielsen said. “I felt like we were in a pretty good place going into the tournament, and that’s what is so disappointing about it.”We came here thinking we had a nicely balanced squad, and I think we showed in the practice games that when they’re playing at their best they can play any form of the game. We need to look at why things didn’t work well, and we need to be honest with ourselves.”

South Africa captain Graeme Smith has praised his team’s efforts in sealing the five-match ODI series against Australia with a 61-run win in the penultimate game in Port Elizabeth. The victory helped them maintain their supremacy as the No. 1 one-day side, but Smith was more excited about the prospects and talent that came through in the four matches.”I think there are some really exciting players coming through,” he said. “Everyone’s contributing with bat and ball – there’s a really good energy in the squad. We just need to keep our feet on the ground and take one step at a time.”He singled out the batsmen for special praise, in particular Herschelle Gibbs, who scored a match-winning 110 and AB de Villiers (84). “Obviously we wanted to play well and win the series here,” he said. “I think the batters did a superb job.”Again in our top four we got one really big partnership and it was nice to have someone to go on and get a hundred as Herschelle did. He’s been getting a few starts, so it’s nice that he cashed in. He played beautifully, I think he played a sensational innings.”I thought de Villiers was also outstanding. We then needed someone at the top to go on and make a big hundred, but we didn’t really have that.”Smith admitted that he was surprised with Australia’s decision to field first in the crucial match. “It is a bit unusual for Australia to bowl first in big games,” said Smith. “But once we posted 317, we were always confident.South Africa posted 317 for 6, which was followed by a spirited Australian chase before Dale Steyn derailed them with 4 for 44. “At 129 for nought, we were a little bit nervous, but the boys did really well and showed a lot of character. It was another very good day for us,” said Smith. The win allowed South Africa to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series but Smith indicated that there would be no letting off in the final match at Johannesburg. “We’ll look to finish the series on a high note at the Wanderers and if we do make it 4-1, then it will really make a top-standard series for us.”

Everton: Fans react to Luis Diaz skill

Reported Everton target Luis Diaz pulled off an ‘outrageous’ piece of skill during Colombia’s World Cup qualifying clash with Brazil on Sunday.

Diaz was under challenge from Marquinhos and Fred and shuffled the ball from his right foot onto his left, which he used to dink it between the two players.

The game would end up finishing 0-0, with FC Porto’s Diaz playing the full 90 minutes.

He was otherwise marshalled pretty effectively, winning only two of his nine ground duels (via SofaScore).

Diaz could have been a Blue

Everton tried to sign Diaz in the final knockings of the transfer window as part of a deal that would have seen James Rodriguez go the other way. Ultimately, James’ salary was an insurmountable hurdle (via Carlos Aleman).

It remains to be seen whether the Blues revisit their interest in subsequent windows. Manager Rafael Benitez ‘clearly wanted more options out wide’.

Portuguese football feed Proxima Jornada posted the footage, and here’s what Everton supporters had to say.

Newcastle manager news on Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick is now reportedly interested in taking the manager’s job at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Bruce to speak to media

It has been reported that Steve Bruce will be speaking to the media ahead of his team’s game at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, despite claims that the new owners will sack him before the match (The Daily Mail).

It means that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are likely still on the hunt for a new manager to take them into the new post-takeover era.

The Latest: Rangnick interested

According to Christian Falk, Rangnick is now ‘interested’ in taking over from Bruce at St. James’ Park.

The Bundesliga journalist also claims that he tried to become the manager of Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, and that to work in the English top flight is his ‘big dream’.

The Verdict: Bring him in

Rangnick is certainly a manager that is capable of bringing trophies back to the North East after so long, with eight already to his name with three different clubs (Transfermarkt).

His style of play is certainly more energetic than what the Toon Army have been used to under Bruce, as he is famous for his gegenpressing, an attack-minded tactic based on creating chances by winning the ball back high up the pitch (ESPN).

Jurgen Klopp, who of course has won both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League during his time at Liverpool, claimed that Rangnick is ‘one of the best, if not the best German coach’ (ESPN), which is very high praise indeed considering that the likes of him, Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea) and Julian Nagelsmann (Bayern Munich) are all managing at the highest level.

Nonetheless, he would certainly be a breath of fresh air should he go on to succeed Bruce on Tyneside.

World Twenty20 organisers to reassess security

The impact of the Lahore attack last week has forced the organisers of the ICC World Twenty20, to be held in England in June, to reassess security measures for the event. Steve Elworthy, tournament director for the event, said a two-level security system will be implemented to protect venues and players this summer.”Definitely, the Lahore terror attack has forced us to relook our plan. Just after the attack, we had a meeting and we are meeting again next week where some top security experts will also participate,” Elworthy told .Elworthy said the recent events have changed the security situation worldwide and that the event organisers will monitor the security situation in London ahead of the second edition of the tournament. As part of the plan, the players’ off-field mobility may be restricted.”The Lahore attack has proved that terrorists can strike anywhere anytime and this is worrying. We have to be on our guard as London has been a terror target in the past,” said Elworthy. “We might have to keep a tab on the players’ outdoor activities during the tournament.”Elworthy also said that security arrangements in England would be different from the ones put in place during the inaugural edition in South Africa in 2007. “The situation here is different and we have to plan accordingly. The terrorists have become more active between then and now,” he said, “But we are confident of staging the event successfully.”Reg Dickason, an independent security adviser for the ECB, is expected to meet with the organisers on his return from the West Indies. “We had a round of meetings after the Mumbai terror attacks last year,” said Elworthy. “We have been monitoring the situation continuously for the past 13-14 months. The ICC is also in touch with us.”

Nel's appeal dismissed

A South African court has dismissed the appeal by fast bowler Andre Nel against a one-match ban handed to him by Cricket South Africa

Cricinfo staff10-Feb-2009A South African court has dismissed the appeal by fast bowler Andre Nel against a one-match ban handed to him by Cricket South Africa. Judge Mervyn King ruled that the sentence was “a reasonable one”, meaning Nel will remain ineligible for selection for the next Standard Bank Pro20 Series match to be played between the Lions and Eagles on Sunday.Nel had been reported during a four-day match in Paarl last month and was found guilty of breaching clause 1.4 of CSA’s rules of conduct, namely that players “shall not use crude or abusive language nor make offensive gestures to any other participant, official or spectator”. Nel appeared before CSA’s disciplinary commissioner, Advocate Michael Kuper, SC, in Johannesburg, who handed down the sentence on January 20.Judge King said: “From a deterrent aspect, a message has to be sent to players that they cannot use these expletives on the field of play, more particularly today, as there are stump microphones and, as in the instant matter, the expletive was picked up and broadcast to thousands of viewers around the country, including young followers of the game of cricket.”Nel will be ineligible for selection for two more matches this season if he is found guilty of a similar contravention of the code during this while.
