A preview of the T20 Canada tournament in Toronto

The publicity for the tournament was rather last-minute and the buying of tickets might have needed more perseverance than ideal, but the four-nation T20 Canada competition kicks off on Friday in Toronto. If the hype is to be believed, there will be big crowds at the four-day event, despite the withdrawal of West Indies and their replacement with the less attractive Zimbabweans. They better have warm clothing as the temperatures are decidedly chilly and are unlikely to rise into double figures for the early match. The main draw for organisers are Pakistan, who landed less than 24 hours before the first match at 9.30am on Friday after hassles with visas for some of their players. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka arrived a day earlier, so none of the three visiting sides have had much time to acclimatise to the early-autumn conditions. The ground at Maple Leaf CC has been given a complete overhaul. Stands can accommodate 10,000 spectators and there is also a large video screen for replays as well as improved media and player facilities. The capital has been underwritten by the Dubai-based organisers who are promoting Canada as a major tourist destination. With hosts Canada making up the four teams, it is hard to see how the final can be anything other than a Pakistan-Sri Lanka affair. Canada are among the lowest-ranked of the leading Associates, and Zimbabwe have done nothing in the last year to suggest that their Twenty20 victory over Australia in September 2007 was anything other than a flash in the pan. The star of that win, Brendan Taylor, is absent, again after falling out with the board.

Pundit says Josh Windass could return by September - Exclusive

Dean Windass has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Josh Windass could be sidelined for at least another month.

Windass, who recently committed his future to Sheffield Wednesday by signing a new contract, has missed the early parts of the campaign following a hamstring problem sustained in pre-season.

He’s since undergone surgery on his issue and has already missed the early parts of the season – keeping him out of the Owls’ impressive start to the League One campaign, which has seen Darren Moore’s men remain unbeaten and climb to the top of the standings.

Windass was asked on Twitter by a supporter on the timeframe for his return to action and revealed that he’s hoping to be back by the end of October, which could see him miss a further 13 matches across all competitions.

But his father told The Transfer Tavern that he could return by next month:

“He’s got to focus on getting fit after his hamstring injury, but it helps when his team have started so well and will be favourites to get automatic promotion.

“I spoke to him yesterday and he feels good, and he wants to get back playing as quickly as possible. I would probably say September or October, it was a bad injury.”

Kurt Zouma is West Ham’s top priority

West Ham United remain interested in signing Kurt Zouma before Deadline Day but now they face competition for his signature…

What’s the word?

According to Sky Sports, the Chelsea centre-back is the Irons’ ‘primary target’ and the Frenchman is ‘open to a move’ to the London Stadium, though a £25m valuation and his £65k-per-week wages could make a move difficult.

And now they have been joined by Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the race to secure him.

The 26-year-old is one of several centre-backs that Spurs are reportedly looking at, whilst he could be used in a swap deal with Sevilla for their defender, Jules Kounde.

Although, Zouma would ideally like to remain in London, where he currently is under contract until 2023.

Get it done

West Ham have seen plenty of targets come and go throughout the window, leaving Moyes with just the one senior addition this summer – back-up goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who has joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

It’s believed that a new centre-back is a top priority for the Scotsman before the end of the month. And that should hardly come as a surprise given the exit of Fabian Balbuena this summer and their defensive frailties against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Hammers leaked two goals against the Magpies before going on to win 4-2, with veteran Craig Dawson receiving plenty of flak for his performance. As relayed by The Transfer Tavern, the 31-year-old was lambasted as a “donkey” and described as “absolutely woeful.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-much-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

A worrying prospect with a Europa League campaign on the horizon.

Zouma would not bring a wealth of experience in both the top-flight and across Europe but also some much-needed quality to an ageing backline.

Described as a “beast of a player” by Premier League and Chelsea legend John Terry, the £26m-rated colossus averaged a whopping 3.6 aerial duels won and 1.2 interceptions per game, as well as a mighty impressive 90.6% passing accuracy across the 2020/21 season, as per WhoScored.

Only three other centre-backs were better on the ball in the entire league, none of which were from the London Stadium, whilst Dawson (2.6), Angelo Ogbonna (2.3) and Issa Diop (1.3) were also some way off matching his aerial presence.

Therefore, it’s evident that Zouma would be an instant upgrade in Moyes’ backline and considering the Scotsman desperately needs additions, it would be wise for GSB to just stump up what is required to secure him.

The Irons hierarchy must secure Moyes his man before August 31st.

AND in other news, West Ham must land “phenomenal” £27m-rated gem with “magical powers”, Moyes needs him…

Marsh guides Australia to easy win

Bangladesh improved marginally but still lost by eight wickets in Darwin, where Australia’s bowlers set up an unassailable 2-0 series lead

Bangladesh improved marginally but still lost by eight wickets in Darwin, where Australia’s bowlers set up an unassailable 2-0 series lead. Once again weighed down by batting lapses, Bangladesh struggled to 117 against an unforgiving attack and then found Shaun Marsh and his top-order colleagues equally merciless as they completed the chase within 23 overs. They wrapped up the result by 2.45pm, a time when most one-day internationals in Australia have barely started. Marsh finished unbeaten on 69 and firmed as a permanent opener in the limited-overs outfit. His second half-century of the series featured powerful cuts and clips through leg and highlighted why his partner Shane Watson described him as the hardest hitter of “normal cricket shots” that Watson had witnessed. The result was never in doubt after poor shot selection was again a problem for Bangladesh. Their bowlers were put in a no-win situation, although Shakib Al Hasan tried to make the most of it. He had Watson trapped lbw trying an expansive sweep on 29 and Michael Clarke stumped for 1 when his eyes lit up prematurely. As they did on Saturday, Marsh and Michael Hussey batted with calm assurance and the victory was complete. It was all but confirmed before midday after Bangladesh tried to avoid another thrashing by batting first. Nathan Bracken and Mitchell Johnson did the important damage in the top order and Australia’s bowlers were spared a full day in the sun as Bangladesh sputtered out in the 37th over.A late fight from Dhiman Ghosh helped them improve on their efforts of four days ago, when they capitulated for their lowest ODI total of 74 in 27.4 overs. But they were the sort of trivial steps forward that will do little to please the coach Jamie Siddons, who must again be lamenting the decision-making from several players.Too many men lacked concentration and apart from a 38-run stand between Junaid Siddique and Shakib, they rarely looked like posting a challenging score. Dhiman showed some spark with his 36-ball 30 that featured consecutive sweeps for six and four over midwicket off Cameron White, but his departure in the next over was one of several unnecessary blunders from Bangladesh. Dhiman had nearly 20 overs up his sleeve when he tried to hammer Stuart Clark down the ground but lobbed it clumsily to mid off. From there the tail tried to resist but the outcome was inevitable and Johnson returned to finish the task, ending up with 3 for 17.Dhiman was far from the only batsman who would regret the way he got out. Alok Kapali spooned a weak aerial drive to mid on when he was far from settled, and the captain Mohammad Ashraful again failed to lead by example. Ashraful’s loose drive at a fullish, wide Clark delivery resulted in a thick edge to first slip when he was on 3. It left Bangladesh at 3 for 15 and in danger of setting another record low score. The Australia fast men did not make things easy, using the early 9.30am start to extract some impressive swing. Bracken picked up both openers, including Tamim Iqbal from the first ball of the game. Tamim received a pearler that angled in and then swung away, catching the edge of his bat and flying to David Hussey at second slip.Bracken combined with the other Hussey brother, Michael, four overs later when Mehrab Hossain jnr prodded another outswinger to third slip and left his series tally at one run from 18 balls. The hordes of schoolchildren who gradually filtered in were in danger of missing the action until Shakib and Siddique threatened a fightback of sorts.Shakib brought up the first boundary of the innings with a well-timed cover-drive off Bracken that finally gave Bangladesh reason to cheer. The pair attacked Johnson, whose speed troubled the batsmen on Saturday, and his first delivery was dispatched confidently through cover for four by Shakib, who also cut him high over point.Siddique looked quietly confident and advanced calmly to drive James Hopes over mid on for four, and their partnership was growing impressively. But the familiar scenes returned when Johnson picked them both up within two overs, Siddique for 21 and Shakib for 19.White got his wish of a lengthy spell and sent down seven overs, the most he has ever bowled in an ODI. Although he battled to pitch the ball on line at times, he collected two wickets and will again be searching for a decent stint in the final game. There is not much else Australia can aim to improve. For Bangladesh, the most relevant goal is to somehow bat out their overs.

West Brom dealt Josh Windass transfer blow

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Josh Windass to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Yorkshire Live, who revealed that the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at Hillsborough, putting an end to the transfer speculation surrounding the 27-year-old.

Indeed, earlier reports had claimed that a number of Premier League and Championship clubs, including Valerien Ismaeal’s West Brom, were keeping a close eye on the situation of the player ahead of a potential summer swoop following the Owls’ relegation from the second tier last season.

However, with Windass now looking set to remain at Wednesday until at least the summer of 2023, a move for the former Glasgow Rangers man would now appear to be rather unlikely for the Baggies any time soon.

Fans will be gutted

With Matheus Pereira’s departure leaving a rather significant goalscoring and creative hole in Albion’s attacking ranks, the addition of a player who could somewhat replace the Brazilian’s influence within the side would appear to be a must for Ismael before the closure of the summer transfer window.

And, considering the form Windass was in for Wednesday last season, despite the fact the Owls were battling at the wrong end of the table, the 27-year-old looked to be something of a perfect fit for the Frenchman.

Indeed, over his 41 Championship appearances for Darren Moore’s side last term, the £1.8m-rated man scored nine goals, registered six assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.9 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the man dubbed an “explosive” player by his father Dean earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.80, ranking him as the club’s seventh-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, when taking into account the £10k-per-week attacking midfielder would have been available at something of a snip this summer, in addition to his obvious ability in the final third, fans of the Baggies are sure to be gutted that Windass has signed a new deal with his current side, as the 27-year-old would have appeared to make an exciting addition to the Albion squad.
