Jenny Roesler03-Jul-2008India’s women could be the next beneficiaries of player contracts which have begun to revolutionise life for England and Australia players.Clare Connor, the ECB’s head of women’s cricket who oversaw the new deals for England players, is certain that the wealthy Indian board will follow suit soon, and with something even more substantial than the benefits England and Australia’s women now receive.”I think India are bound to announce something even bigger than what ECB and Cricket Australia have done so far for their national players; that seems to be Indian way at the moment,” Connor told Cricinfo. “Perhaps Sir Allen Stanford will come up trumps for the West Indian women … who knows? I sense that New Zealand cricket will not be able to offer their players anything but I hope I’m proved wrong.”A spokesperson for BCCI said that there were no immediate plans to offer contracts to India women although she would not rule out deals being made in the future.In the meantime, the merger of the women’s board with BCCI is still being processed and so the main focus is organising domestic cricket. Nevertheless, it would hardly be a surprise if contracts were announced in the next year or so, given the advantages that the players can receive in working on their game. Increased skills could help the long-term popularity of the game.The ECB paved the way in offering deals in April, while Cricket Australia made its announcement last week. “I know that CA has been thinking for some time about how to fund their players better,” said Connor. “I spoke to the ICC Women’s Committee about our contracts back in April in South Africa, the rationale behind them and the benefits as we saw them. I was then contacted by CA to talk in more depth about them – a month later and CA has announced their plans. What’s great about all this is that there seems to be real momentum behind the women’s game at the moment.”Connor believes CA’s move is “fantastic”. “I think it sends out a great message to the players. When someone as talented as Australia’s Ellyse Perry has to ultimately decide between football and cricket, then this level of financial support, coupled with her obvious love of the game, might be enough to keep her wanting to play cricket.”The deals offer more flexibility to the players who, as amateurs, have traditionally had to juggle careers and training. While Australia’s players can’t ditch their jobs just yet (should they want to), life is certainly much easier for them. Shelley Nitschke wrote in her Cricinfo blog today: “Although the Cricket Australia contracts won’t exactly allow us to resign from our employment roles, they will help alleviate some of these pressures. I guess I have been very lucky in regard to this, working at the South Australian Cricket Association.”While working in cricket, as well as playing, can become a bit of a cricket overload, I have been very well supported with respect to both state and international commitments. Needless to say, all the girls are pretty happy about the concept of contracts, hopefully in time other countries will also follow the lead set by the ECB, and now Cricket Australia.”England players, who retain their amateur status too, also receive funding from Sport England which has enabled them to hand in their notices to concentrate on cricket and work as Chance to Shine ambassadors.”It’s been a huge success so far,” said Connor. “The PR that the women’s game has had on the back of the scheme has been brilliant and the players are doing a fantastic job coaching in schools and clubs. Charlotte Edwards phoned me the other night to say that she had coached 150 girls in a single day culminating in an after-school cricket activity where she had 17 children attending, nine girls and eight boys. She’s loving her role and is spotting some really talented youngsters on her travels. Chance to Shine are pleased with all that the girls are doing, especially the ambassadorial work they did for National Cricket Day a month ago.”Nitschke acknowledges the recent developments in women’s cricket – including the staging of next year’s World Twenty20 alongside the men’s – and believes it’s about time that the players began to demand more. “We are used to things happening quite slowly in the world of women’s cricket, and the common response to a small improvement is often, ‘Well, at least it’s something’. This mentality needs to change.”England and Australia’s players have certainly been offered the means to change their mindsets, while the overall involvement of the ICC in the women’s game has already opened up exciting new avenues. Although today’s players have never had it so good, there is still much more scope for improvement for all countries in respect to their women’s cricket set-up and now it seems some players aren’t afraid of asking for it.

Antes, porém, Pratto faz um leve desvio de cabeça, praticamente sem alterar a trajetória da bola. Jô recebe e, estando em impedimento no momento que a bola sai do pé de Jadson, abre o placar para o Corinthians. A questão é que, segundo a Comissão de Arbitragem, o toque do são-paulino tirou o impedimento porque provocou nova jogada, do que Pratto discorda.

Fato é que o Tricolor foi eliminado e Pratto agora já projeta o futuro. O argentino apontou os prós e contras do time no primeiro semestre.

– Sabemos porque perdemos, fomos eliminados. Pelos jogos que perdemos em casa, porque fomos bem como visitantes. Temos de melhorar detalhes, que estamos deixando passar, como bola parada, desatenções em contra-ataque, às vezes de posicionamento. Temos dez, 15 dias para trabalhar. Manter o que estávamos fazendo bem, que era pressionar no ataque, recuperar a bola o mais longe possível. Temos ter mais posse de bola, sem jogar devagar, ser mais agressivo como antes – analisou o camisa 14.

Pratto disse que o São Paulo tem de usar o duelo contra o Cruzeiro em Belo Horizonte como espelho. Após perder em casa por 2 a 0, o Tricolor venceu os mineiros por 2 a 1, sendo eliminado na Copa do Brasil, mas com boa atuação.

– Temos que fazer como em Belo Horizonte. Que teve um jogo ofensivo, como o treinador gosta. Posse de bola, temos um estilo mais vertical. Temos de fazer mais isso, treinar nesses 15 dias. Por mais que a gente não tenha jogado bem lá, controlamos o jogo – disse.

Nesta quinta-feira pela manhã, o São Paulo seguiu com os testes físicos. O primeiro trabalho com bola após as eliminações será nesta quinta à tarde. O time volta a campo no próximo dia 11 de maio contra o Defensa y Justicia (ARG) pelo jogo de volta da Copa Sul-Americana.

A luta para tornar o Fluminense mais incisivo na sua caminhada no Brasileirão deve contar com um aliado promissor. Autor do gol tricolor na vitória por 1 a 0 sobre o Botafogo no último sábado, no Nilton Santos, Michel Araújo não só comprovou poder de decisão como também trouxe novas “cartadas” para garantir que a equipe mantenha o pique.

Lançado no decorrer das partidas pelo técnico Odair Hellmann, o uruguaio fez muito mais do que marcar seu primeiro gol em nove jogos pelo clube. Araújo abriu novos atalhos para o setor ofensivo do Tricolor das Laranjeiras e evitou que a linha de frente caísse em um marasmo durante o Clássico Vovô.

Seu entrosamento com o restante do elenco vem melhorando a ponto de Michel Araújo já mostrar que saber como pode mostrar seu valor. O jogador de 23 anos deixou boas esperanças para o técnico Odair Hellmann sob outro ponto de vista.

Odair contou como Michel Araújo tem se notabilizado na rotina no clube.

– Michel, como muitos atletas, vem mostrando evolução. Vem entrando bem nas partidas, treinando bem. Acredito muito no dia a dia de treinos – e, em seguida, alertou:

– Agora tem que colocar isso em campo. Mas minha prioridade é o grupo, não só o Michel, mas muitos jogadores jovens estão evoluindo neste aspecto. Quem ganha com isto é o Fluminense – completou.

Após marcar seu primeiro gol pelo Fluminense, Michel Araújo tenta deixar de ser uma promessa e se concretizar como uma boa “cartada” do Tricolor das Laranjeiras.

Former Newcastle United star Steve Howey believes Joe Willock enjoyed a brilliant spell at the club last season as they close in on the permanent signing of the midfielder.

Newcastle took Willock on loan in January and he went from strength to strength under the management of Steve Bruce.

The 21-year-old made 14 appearances for the Magpies and scored eight goals in total, as he netted in all of his final seven outings for the club, including strikes against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester City.

And now it appears that Newcastle are closing in on a permanent deal to bring Willock into the club on a permanent basis.

90min reports that the two clubs have agreed a deal worth £25m for his signature, but that the move now hinges on the midfielder’s go-ahead.

Arsenal are reported to have told Willock that he does not have a future at the Emirates and is free to leave the club in this transfer window.

And Howey believes he has earned the right to return to Bruce’s side.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “You cannot say that he didn’t do brilliantly because he did, he did absolutely exceptionally well.

“Of course, you can understand the fee that’s been touted about for him. It’s just whether Newcastle are prepared to pay top whack or can they negotiate with Arsenal?”

Crystal Palace pipped Leeds United to a deal for midfielder Conor Gallagher on Friday evening.

The Eagles announced a season-long loan move for the Chelsea man, which led to a number of supporters sharing their positive thoughts on the confirmed news.

Gallagher has become Partick Vieira’s fifth summer signing, with Palace managing to lure the central midfielder to Selhurst Park just as it seemed he would be heading to Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa.

The versatile midfielder had agreed on terms and had a medical in Yorkshire, however, Palace managed to tempt Gallagher to stay in London.

The 21-year-old made his Eagles debut less than 24 hours after officially joining, coming on in the second half to help Palace to a 3-1 pre-season win against Reading.

Matheus, que vestiu a camisa do Guarani em 2018, fez valer a lei do ex, falou sobre a partida e projetou o último jogo do Paulistão.

– Foi um jogo importante para a gente, de superação, pois sabíamos da nossa situação complicada no campeonato. Voltamos com o pensamento de vencer, e nada mais importava. Precisávamos muito dos três pontos e graças a Deus conseguimos conquistar – comentou, antes de completar:

– Foi um jogo difícil, contra um adversário qualificado e de tradição, mas conseguimos aproveitar botar a bola na rede duas vezes e respirar um pouco. Vale ressaltar que os antigos vínculos de Caio Alexandre, Kanu e Marcelo Benevenuto eram válidos até o final de 2020 – ou seja, eles podiam assinar um pré-contrato com outra equipe a partir de junho.

A diretoria do Botafogo trabalha para manter os jogadores criados na base de General Severiano por perto. Os três são vistos como ativos do clube e são bem avaliados pelo treinador Paulo Autuori – não à toa, vinham sendo utilizados com certa frequência.

Caio Alexandre renovou até dezembro de 2022, mesma tempo de Kanu. Benevenuto, por sua vez, assinou até o final de 2023. Os novos contratos, consequentemente, vêm com aumentos salariais e novas multas rescisórias para proteger o Botafogo do interesse de outras equipes nos jogadores.

Da equipe que vinha sendo titular com frequência em 2020 – excluindo os jogadores que estão emprestados -, Fernando e Keisuke Honda são outros dois atletas que possuem contrato acabando no final do ano. A diretoria deve sentar com os representantes do lateral-direito nas próximas semanas. Quanto ao japonês, por se tratar de um contrato mais complexo, as negociações devem se desenvolver mais.

Marcinho, titular em boa parte de 2019 e que não atuou na atual temporada por uma lesão no joelho direito, é outro que tem contrato acabando em dezembro de 2020. A prioridade da diretoria, como citado anteriormente, é valorizar os jogadores que já estão no clube.

Se as conversas por novos jogadores – John Obi Mikel, por exemplo – foram paralisadas pela pandemia, a diretoria espera não ficar para trás nas questões de renovação neste período.

I cannot, in all conscience, say that their concerns for their players were unfounded.Of course, the terrorists can strike and, on the face of it, Pakistan seems to have become a high-risk country and that’s the view that one would get from the Diplomatic Enclave in Islamabad. But from the measures that the United States is adopting in the name of Homeland Security, the United States too would be a high-risk country. But international sports events are not being cancelled and the US Open tennis tournament is due to get underway in New York in a few days time. New York is the city where the World Trade Centre was located and which is now called Ground-Zero. But his brother Mushtaq was even younger when he first played for Pakistan against the West Indies and Wes Hall in Lahore.There has been Khalid Hasan who played for Pakistan in England in 1954, Hasib Ahsan and Nasimul Ghani who were probably school boys when taken on Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies.Zaheer Abbas too looked terribly young when I first cast eyes on him and he went on to make a thundering double century on Pakistan’s tour of England in 1971. But the crown rests on the head of Hasan Raza who was 13 years and some months when he wore the Pakistan cap, prompting a lyrical editorial in The Times of London.The Indian school-boy Patel, looks a fine prospect and may turn out to be another Wasim Bari.
