Celtic: Forrest may have blown his chance

While Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side ultimately sealed their place in the Scottish Cup quarter-final with a 4-0 win over Raith Rovers on Sunday afternoon, in truth, the final scoreline rather flattered the Bhoys.

With the 56-year-old Hoops boss having made seven changes to the side that defeated Aberdeen in midweek, Celtic required a spectacular strike from left-back Liam Scales to break the deadlock midway through the first half, before Giorgos Giakoumakis, Daizen Maeda and Nir Bitton all added goals after the hour mark – despite the Bhoys’ lacklustre display.

Indeed, speaking after the fixture, Postecoglou said of his side’s performance: “I think the urgency wasn’t quite there. It’s not about singling out individuals. We have an intent and ambition to be a certain kind of team, training is intense, so gameday we are intense no matter who starts.”

And, while the Greek-Australian coach may not have wanted to comment on the individual performances of a number of his side, it was clear for all to see that both of Celtic’s starting wingers, Mikey Johnston and James Forrest, were miles off the pace on Sunday – something that will be extremely concerning for the 56-year-old manager, especially considering the duo were up against a Rovers side who currently occupy fourth place in the Scottish Championship table.

Forrest may have blown his final chance

Indeed, with summer signing Liel Abada taking to life in Scotland like a duck to water, with the 20-year-old Israel international having already bagged 14 goals and registered 11 assists over 40 appearances for the Hoops, Forrest already looks to be Postecoglou’s second-choice on the right-hand side of the Celtic front three.

And, while it is true that a series of niggling injuries have limited the number of minutes the 30-year-old has played so far this season, the £5.4m-rated forward has nevertheless returned a disappointing three goals and three assists over his 23 outings for the Bhoys this term – with only one of these goal contributions, an assist against Dundee in a 6-0 win at the beginning of the current campaign, coming in the Premiership.

However, the £19k-per-week Scotland international had the perfect opportunity to prove to Postecoglou that he is capable of challenging Abada for his spot on the right-wing over the remainder of the season on Sunday, with the 56-year-old handing Forrest his 13th start of the current campaign against Raith Rovers.

Although, if this was Forrest’s last big chance to stake his claim on a starting spot, it is an opportunity the 30-year-old blew completely, as, over the course of his 69 minutes on the pitch, the winger offered his side next to nothing going forwards, with the Scottish Daily Express awarding the 38-time capped international a four in their player ratings – the worst of any Celtic player on the day – as well as stating of his display:

“Looked off the pace again, couldn’t trouble Raith down the right flank. Seemed to inexplicably hold back from releasing the ball at key moments.”

As such, while it is undeniable that Forrest is a player who has contributed a great deal for the Bhoys over the years, often being the club’s saviour in the biggest of games, considering his overall level of performance so far under the management of Postecoglou, this could well be the beginning of the end of the Parkhead hero – as the 30-year-old well and truly fluffed his big chance on Sunday.

Mithun, Taskin picked for India ODIs

Bangladesh have included uncapped players Mohammad Mithun and Taskin Ahmed in the 15-man squad for the three ODIs at home against India

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has made the ODI squad•BCB

Uncapped players Taskin Ahmed and Mithun Ali have been called up to Bangladesh’s 15-man squad for the three-ODI series against India in June. There was no room for medium-pacer Rubel Hossain as the selectors also picked Ziaur Rahman for his seam-bowling allrounder skills. From Bangladesh’s previous ODI campaign – the Asia Cup this year – Imrul Kayes, Arafat Sunny, Naeem Islam and Shafiul Islam missed out, while Tamim Iqbal returned to the squad after missing the five-nation tournament due to a neck injury.Taskin, 19, is recognised as one of the quickest bowlers in Bangladesh. He recently recovered from a knee injury that sidelined him for nearly a year after the BPL in 2013. A few weeks after full recovery, Taskin made his international debut against Australia in the World T20. He was always earmarked by BCB coaches and was a regular in the Bangladesh nets from January this year, gradually revving up his pace.Wicketkeeper-batsman Mithun was the sixth highest scorer – 706 runs – in first-class cricket this season, including two centuries. He made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka in February this year.Chief selector Faruque Ahmed said Mithun and Taskin had been picked to gauge the depth of the team’s bench strength ahead of the 2015 World Cup. “We have kept more or less a settled squad but it is also important to get an idea about the kind of back up we have in our hands as we start preparing for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand,” Faruque said. “Mithun [Ali] has been under our radar for a while. He has performed consistently in the limited overs format and in the longer version as well during the last couple of years and deserves a chance at international level.”Taskin [Ahmed] is an exciting prospect and has already played a Twenty20 international. We thought it was a good opportunity to see how he performs in the 50-over game in home conditions against some quality batsmen.”Faruque said due to the number of pace options, and to balance the squad, they had to omit Rubel. He expressed confidence in Al-Amin Hossain and also felt Mahmudullah would be useful as a bowler, but did not make a mention of his poor batting form.”Al Amin has bowled impressively since his debut and Mashrafe Mortaza is our most experienced campaigner. We also have a seam-bowling all-rounder in Ziaur Rahman. Because of these pace options and squad balance Rubel Hossain misses out. The spin department is well covered with Abdur Razzak, Shakib Al Hasan and Sohag Gazi. Mahmudullah is also quite handy and can do a job for his captain.”Rubel was Bangladesh’s highest ODI wicket-taker in the 2013-14 season, but his expensive spells this year probably cost him a place. Out of six ODIs in 2014, Rubel gave away more than 60 on four occasions, but found a way to pick up wickets. Bangladesh are without their top two wicket-takers of the year – Rubel and Sunny – for the series against India.Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mithun Ali, Abdur Razzak, Masrafe Mortaza, Shohag Gazi, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed.

'The guys were pumped-up to perform' – Dhoni

The Indian captain hailed the victory as ‘satisfying’ but wanted more improvement in the fielding

Siddarth Ravindran in Dambulla24-Jun-2010

MS Dhoni: ” If we gradually improve our fielding till the World Cup, we will be a safe fielding side”•Associated Press

The same two sides had contested the final of the Asia Cup two years ago, and the totals and margin of victory are similar to the title clash at Dambulla on Thursday. The two matches couldn’t be more different though.Sri Lanka’s win had come on the back of two freakish performances – Sanath Jayasuriya’s counterattacking 125 to revive them from 66 for 4, and Ajantha Mendis’ star-making haul of 6 for 13 that derailed a rampant India – while MS Dhoni’s side won through an array of mostly routine but important contributions from nearly everyone in the side.Ashish Nehra may grab the headlines but his quick-bowling partners had done their bit earlier on. Praveen Kumar showed off yet again how dangerous he can be in conditions that suit him, and removed the dangerous Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first over, while Zaheer Khan tormented Upul Tharanga with sideways movement before getting him to shoulder arms to an indipper that took the offstump. As for the batting, Dinesh Karthik was the surprise Man of the Match but five other batsmen made 25 or more to steadily drive India’s total towards the zone labelled ‘competitive’. For a side that has often ridden on individual brilliance and its batting arsenal, a bowler-led team-based victory in a tournament final is especially significant.Dhoni was a pleased man after witnessing his side lift their game every time it mattered in the tournament, with the only defeat coming in the inconsequential league match against Sri Lanka. “This was a very satisfying win for us since we won three out of four games,” Dhoni said. “It was an important tournament, four of the best sides were playing, and each side was quite balanced, overall happy with the performance.”With the final being played on a fresh pitch, getting to bat first proved a big advantage at a venue where the team batting second usually finds it harder to score. “The guys were pumped-up to perform. It was a good toss to win, conditions were ideal for batting,” Dhoni said. “It got a bit slower as the game progressed and it started doing a bit under the lights, the fast bowlers made the most out of it.”There were some aspects of Thursday’s showing that he felt needed improvement, such as the number of batsmen who didn’t go on to score half-centuries after getting their eye in. “Most of us got the starts that was needed, we should have converted those starts,” he said. “But if you win a game nobody questions that but it is very important to learn even if you are winning games, I still think we could have scored more runs and given the bowlers the extra cushion of 15-20 runs.”India’s next limited-overs assignment is the tri-series in Dambulla, also involving New Zealand, following the Tests against Sri Lanka next month. With none of the batting youngsters having made compelling cases in the Asia Cup and the Zimbabwe series, it will be interesting to see what the pecking order is when the squad is chosen for that triangular.Another facet that Dhoni wanted the team to improve in was fielding, which had played a key role in Sri Lanka’s win in Tuesday’s league game. Kumar Sangakkara’s team was flat in the field during the finals, with several dropped chances and plenty of fumbles in the outfield.Kris Srikkanth, the Indian chairman of selectors, had said the players’ fitness and fielding levels had been looked into while picking the squad for the tournament, and the team has also shown a renewed focus on fielding during their practice sessions. “We need to improve our fielding, but one good thing, we had a few youngsters who did really well, so we don’t really have to hide too many in this side,” Dhoni said. “All our fielders are not brilliant but it was good in this series, if we gradually improve our fielding till the World Cup, we will be a safe fielding side, and fielding really contributes in one-dayers.”

Sangakkara applies sleeper hold to Sussex

Watching Kumar Sangakkara bat could never be described as a chore but his grit was of material value to Durham as they quietly applied the sleeper hold to Sussex for their fourth draw of the season.

Watching Kumar Sangakkara make a hundred could never be described as a chore, even though some prefer the more delicate strokeplay of his long-time Sri Lanka batting buddy, Mahela Jayawardene. Sangakkara has a little bit more of the streetfighter about him and, although Hove is perhaps not a cauldron of enmity for visiting opponents, his grit was of material value to Durham as they quietly applied the sleeper hold to Sussex for their fourth draw of the season.Paul Collingwood, Durham’s captain, was happy to allow Sangakkara an extended centre-wicket practice session, having declined Sussex’s offer of an innings forfeiture to set up a run chase. That would have meant Durham attempting to get 369 in 96 overs but Collingwood was happy to pursue a few more bonus points and preserve his team’s unbeaten record – even if that means the champions remaining uncomfortably close to the bottom of Division One.Mark Robinson confirmed that Sussex “wanted to have a game” but he was respectful of the polite snub. He was a little more perturbed about not being able to field Chris Jordan for the second match running. Jordan was ruled out of last week’s trip to Old Trafford due to his involvement in the Scotland ODI and the ECB asked for him to sit out this match as well due to a concern about over-bowling.Sussex have back-to-back T20 games at the weekend, before England’s players link up again ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Jordan took part in a 2nd XI T20 fixture on Wednesday, specifically to practise his death bowling, and Robinson described him as a rhythm bowler who performs better when he is playing regularly, although he was pragmatic about the situation.”Peter Moores is the England coach, he’s trying to protect an asset, I want my asset playing here to win a game,” he said. “The county game needs its best players playing, where possible. At times it won’t be possible.”In Robinson’s words, Sangakkara was “the biggest winner out of the day”. His 159, spread over six hours and many more minutes in the dressing room while the rain fell on Tuesday, was his highest first-class score in England, surpassing two centuries for Warwickshire against Durham in 2007 and 153 in a tour match at Chelmsford three years ago. His only Test hundred in this country also came in 2011, a match-saving 119 in Southampton, and this short-term spell in county cricket has been aimed at improving on a mediocre record here.He has been keen to express his gratitude to Durham for their part in the deal and the brief time spent sharing knowledge with young team-mates in the dressing room will doubtless have been beneficial. This innings was also the main plank in securing Durham four batting points – though they fell short of the maximum haul during the 11-ball scramble for eight more runs that followed his dismissal. There was much for a generous-minded crowd to applaud when Sangakkara finally fell on the stroke of tea, reward for Steve Magoffin, who had seen him dropped in the slips on 20 the previous day. Sangakkara had steadily grown in fluency, with his first fifty taking 116 balls (and being completed around 24 hours after his innings began); the next took 76 and the final 55.Sangakkara now has a few grey strands in among his black tousled hair – perhaps that was why Scott Borthwick referred to him as a “cricket badger” after their century stand on the third day – and this was a wise old knock. Every time he was beaten, or dropped the hands to nullify an edge, he recalibrated his batting senses and got back on with the job at hand. Luke Wright was breezily flicked for six, Ashar Zaidi clubbed a little more ruthlessly over the short, leg-side boundary. His footwork was sure and his striking, for the most part, crisp. His partnership with Collingwood was worth 144 in less than 30 overs as Durham hit the accelerator after losing Borthwick, for his overnight 84, and Michael Richardson. Collingwood unpacked his boxfresh cover drive again, at one point hitting six boundaries in 11 balls, though he had no regrets about declining Sussex’s offer. “I thought it was a bit early in the season to go hunting for victories,” he said. His mood was further improved by the suggestion that Graham Onions’ back problem may not be as bad as first feared. He said that the “scans look positive” after Onions’ trip to see a specialist and the seamer could be fit to play again after an injection.Although the poor weather that sluiced away much of the previous two days was chiefly responsible for condemning this game to a draw, the pitch was a willing accomplice. By the end, Ben Brown was having his first-ever bowl in senior cricket, with Michael Yardy filling in behind the stumps. Without the sight of Sangakkara to enjoy, most joined the surface in nodding off to sleep.
