Wood, Woakes, Footitt – who will replace Anderson?

Mark Wood
Age 25, Tests 4, Test bowling average 39.21
The overwhelming favourite to replace Anderson. Wood looked to have secured a long-term place in the side after playing the first four Tests of the summer and impressing with his pace and his ability to swing the ball. Fears over how he would react to his workload were confirmed, though, when he reported a sore ankle after a slightly jaded showing at Lord’s. He has remained with the England squad and, while he is not currently deemed fit, is confident of being 100% ahead of Trent Bridge. He is not expected to play another game before then.Mark Footitt
Age 29, Tests 0
Footitt was a member of the squad taken to Spain for a pre-series training camp and has continued to bowl well in county cricket, where he has taken 50 Championship wickets this season at an average of 23.64. Perhaps because those are Division Two wickets they appear to have been discounted a little and, aged 29, time is not on Footitt’s side. But the left-armer bowls with pace, swings the ball and knows Trent Bridge well having been on the staff at Nottinghamshire for several years. England may be reluctant to bring someone in to such a high-profile match on debut, though it worked pretty well with Jonathan Trott in 2009.Chris Woakes
Age 26, Tests 4, Average 52.16
Probably the closest like-for-like replacement for Anderson, Woakes might well have been favourite to replace him had he played a little more cricket this season. As it is, though, he has only played two first-class games this year as he comes back from a variety of injuries. He trained with England ahead of the Edgbaston and impressed with his pace. But he was deemed to be just a little short of his best in terms of control and may have to wait a little longer for a recall.Liam Plunkett
Age 30, Tests 13, Average 37.46
Plunkett might well consider himself somewhat unfortunate. Despite developing a reputation as perhaps the quickest bowler in the Championship (Tymal Mills may be quicker but has to be considered a limited-overs only bowler these days), he has not played a Test since July 2014 and has only played two Championship matches this season due to injuries and a brief suspension. He may well win a recall to the England squad, but it seems unlikely he will make the XI.Jack Brooks
Age 31, Tests 0
A fine bowler with impressive accuracy, the fact that Brooks’ first-class career started so late – he was 25 when he made his debut – may prove to be his undoing. He remains hugely effective at county level, with 57 first-class wickets at 21.13 apiece for Yorkshire this season. He is unlikely to be called up, but if he did he wouldn’t let England down.Chris Rushworth
Age 29, Tests 0
Nobody has more wickets in first-class cricket this season than Rushworth. But those 69 victims at an average of 18.63 ( he also took 55 in 2013 and 65 in 2014) are sometimes not given the worth they deserve as Rushworth plays his home games on a Durham surface that offers an unusual amount of assistance to seam bowlers. It is true that he lacks the pace of most Test bowlers, but he takes wickets away from home, too (he claimed nine at Southampton recently), and is every bit as quick as Terry Alderman or Chaminda Vaas. He remains a most unlikely choice but, on typical English county pitches – and they are not always the same at Test level – he is a dangerous bowler.

Shastri to continue as director for Bangladesh tour

Ravi Shastri has been named India’s team director for the upcoming tour to Bangladesh, while Sanjay Bangar, Bharat Arun and R Sridhar will continue as assistant coaches for the tour. However, the long-term coaching appointments are likely to be finalised in consultation with the cricket advisory committee before India’s tour to Zimbabwe in July. The appointments, announced by the BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, meant the only name missing from India’s coaching staff from the World Cup was Duncan Fletcher’s, whose contract has ended.Shastri is understood to have been interested in a long-term position, either as head coach or team director but for now, he has agreed for the short-term assignment of one Test and three ODIs in Bangladesh.Since the BCCI didn’t want to rope in new appointees for the short tour, the three specialist coaches were also retained. One of the three is in danger of losing his post after the Bangladesh series.Meanwhile, the high-profile cricket advisory committee is likely to meet in Kolkata on June 6 to spell out the procedure for appointing the head coach or team director. Besides Shastri, the BCCI is believed to have been in touch with former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody and Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach Daniel Vettori. While Moody is understood to have been recommended by VVS Laxman, his colleague at Sunrisers Hyderabad, Vettori has been recommended by Test captain Kohli.Shastri had been named director of cricket after India’s poor performance in the Test series in England last year and the BCCI had appointed Bangar, Arun and Sridhar as assistant coaches at the same time. Their tenures with the Indian team were then extended until the end of the 2015 World Cup.

IPL's in-form teams clash at the Wankhede

Big Picture

Mumbai Indians have made a remarkable turnaround to their season, winning their last five matches, to enlarge the mid-table pack chasing a playoff spot. In other words, Mumbai have emulated their 2014 campaign where they qualified for the playoffs after losing their first five games. The next challenge for Mumbai is to find a way past a rejuvenated Royal Challengers Bangalore outfit, who have already got more points in 10 games this season than they did in the whole of last. Chris Gayle, who was rested in the loss to Chennai Super Kings, returned to bludgeon a 57-ball 117 against Kings XI Punjab. With injuries abundant in the early stages of the tournament, both teams struggled to find the right XI, and it is no coincidence that wins were scarce. Now, with both camps having found settled starting line-ups, the points are starting to rack up, intensifying the race for the top four.Mitchell Starc, who missed the first three games, has been conspicuous by his presence and helped significantly in turning around the fortunes of Royal Challengers with his bowling. On the other side, Lasith Malinga will be determined to put up yet another show of specialised death bowling. Both bowlers, currently indispensable to their respective teams, have picked up 15 wickets this season.

Watch out for…

Forced to sit out the match against Chennai Super Kings, Lasith Malinga will return for the crucial clash against Royal Challengers. He has come into his own this IPL, not only bowling yorkers at will and picking up wickets, but also mentoring the rest of the fast bowlers.Since the promotion of AB de Villiers to No. 3, Royal Challengers have lost just one in their last six games, and won three. Royal Challengers’ top order consists of their best batsmen, and a combination of either of these match-winners for any length of time is bound to put Mumbai under pressure.

Stats and trivia

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore have played against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium four times, losing their previous two encounters and winning the first two.
  • Chris Gayle has an average of 53.62 against Mumbai Indians in 10 matches, the highest for any batsman in the IPL to have played at least 10 games.

Melbourne-bound, this time with Elliott

Grant Elliott was not among the 20 who tried to absorb the venue of the World Cup final in October in the hope they would return, but he is the man taking them back

Andrew McGlashan in Auckland25-Mar-2015When New Zealand made a trip to the MCG in October to get a feel for the venue as part of their World Cup preparation, there was a notable absentee from the group. Grant Elliott was not among the 20 who tried to absorb the ground in the hope they would return. They have made it back, for their first World Cup final, in the most thrilling of ways, and Elliott was the man to carry them there with one of the finest closing innings in one-day history. “He did say when I saw him at the end, ‘does this mean I get to come to Melbourne?'” Brendon McCullum said. But despite not being part of the New Zealand squad until the World Cup 15 was named, McCullum insisted it was not a last-minute change of heart.”I’m not sure he was a bolter, he’d always been in the frame,” he said. “In the Champions Trophy semi-final against Pakistan he was calm under pressure and stepped up on the big occasion. He has spent some time out but by no means was he out altogether. Domestic performances banged the door down. He grabbed the opportunity and reminded last night why he is never a guy to shut the door on.”As New Zealand awoke on Wednesday – or at least those who had managed to sleep, which did not include coach Mike Hesson, awoke – that innings from Elliott, and the entire semi-final which will go down as one of the great World Cup matches, was the talk of the nation. Radio, TV and newspapers could not get enough. Adorning the front page of the was Elliott, arms aloft, under the headline “The final dream…the six that raised the roof.”In coffee shops and on the streets, cricket was being talked about, people trying to make sense of everything that had happened. “Were you at the game?” was a common question. It will be one of those matches where the 40,000 present at Eden Park swells to many more in years to come.Elliott, a self-confessed quiet man who does not like the spotlight, was taking it in his stride as players milled around their Auckland hotel awaiting departure to Melbourne. “Grant is pretty calm,” Hesson said.’Empathy towards the South Africans’ – Hesson

Half an hour after the end to one of the most dramatic World Cup matches, the victors shared a beer with vanquished. A fierce contest throughout, it ended with unbridled joy for New Zealand and tears for South Africa but both sides came together shortly after Grant Elliott had provided an iconic image by offering a consoling hand to Dale Steyn.

“It was a heck of a game of cricket and we realise it could have gone either way,” Mike Hesson said. “Two really good sides going toe-to-toe for eight hours. We are delighted to be going to Melbourne but the shoe could have been on the other foot. The guys have a got a fair bit of humility and empathy towards the South Africans and how well they played.”

Brendon McCullum said: “They came into the changing room for a beer, they were outstanding the way they played and took defeat in their stride as tremendous ambassadors. They showed graciousness in defeat. No one would dispute how good they’ve been and we had to play exceptionally well to beat them.”

A case of the calm after the storm following the heady closing exchanges when the match swung one way then the other. “We were in two separate areas, we didn’t want to move towards the end,” Hesson said. “Half of us were upstairs and half downstairs keeping in touch on a walkie-talkie. When it happened we just jumped up, hugged anyone in sight, yelled and ran downstairs as quick as we could.”The presence of Elliott in the middle made Hesson and McCullum believe they were never out of the contest. “There were times we were behind the eight-ball,” Hesson said. “To be fair to Morne Morkel he bowled a great over in the 38th when he got Corey out and the rate went big again. That was probably a time when I thought we were in trouble, but never thought we were out of it.”McCullum, watching on after his 26-ball 59 put New Zealand ahead of the rate, said: “I was pretty calm for most of it, then towards end with no more part to play I had immense faith but it was always an unknown. It took something special to get across the line and Grant was the man to do it.”When Anderson departed, 46 were needed off five overs. Elliott then put AB de Villiers over deep midwicket, but still it came down to 23 off two and then 18 off eight balls before Elliott cracked Morkel through the covers and was dropped next ball in the deep. Both Elliott and Vettori were alert in running to the wicketkeeper before the final blow.”Calmness under pressure in the middle, that’s where you need that experience and a guy who can pace a chase,” Hesson said. “He’s done everything and more than we could have asked. There were a few doubters early, but then he got that hundred in Dunedin and a few other pretty damn good innings. I think most people realised he’s a pretty good cricketer.”After the immediate outpouring of emotion, from the players and the crowd, the team stayed behind at Eden Park, spending time with the South Africans before returning to their hotel and continuing to reflect on what they had achieved.”We stood around and the guys gave their thoughts,” Hesson said. “Heartfelt emotion, what it meant for the guys to get to where we have done. We’ve got a chance to put on good show on Sunday, and we’ll prepare for that, but also realise we’ve achieved something pretty special.”It’s a really special time for everyone involved. We are all cricket lovers, involved in the game for a very long time and have loved it since we were kids. There’s a huge amount of pride in being part of a team to make a World Cup final.”And this time Elliott will be on the plane with them to Melbourne.

Clarke retires hurt with back injury

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke left Adelaide Oval for injections to his lower back after retiring hurt with an apparent relapse of his chronic condition during day one of the first Test against India. The injections are designed to allow Clarke to try to bat again in the first innings with Australia now a little unsteadily placed at 6 for 354, but he must now be in some doubt for the second match of the series in Brisbane. The decision to retire hurt and seek immediate treatment rather than try to bat on was a strong indication of Clarke’s discomfort, having fought so much to be fit for this match.Clarke was unbeaten on 60 and batting comfortably alongside David Warner when he twisted slightly to avoid a short ball from Ishant Sharma and immediately grimaced at familiar pain from his lower back.He sank to the turf at pitch-side as the team doctor Peter Brukner and physio Alex Kountouris ran out to treat him. After an attempt to stretch and a brief consultation, Clarke retired hurt to be replaced at the crease by Steven Smith.Having fought a daily battle to prove his fitness from related hamstring problems, the sight of Clarke treading gingerly off the field will create fresh doubts about his physical readiness for Test cricket. Before the death of Phillip Hughes pushed all other issues to one side, Clarke had been in conflict with the national selectors over his ability to be fit for the originally scheduled first Test at the Gabba. While the delay of the first Test and its move from Brisbane to Adelaide granted Clarke, Kountouris, Brukner and his fitness trainer Duncan Kerr extra time to strengthen his body, the increasing frequency of hamstring and back problems are a point of significant concern for the national team. It is why the selectors had asked Clarke to play in a two-day tour match against the Indians in Adelaide in order to show his ability to play over multiple days, a call that now appears to have been sensible. The Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland, on ABC radio shortly after Clarke retired hurt, said the circumstances surrounding Hughes’ death and Clarke’s central role as a leader in the days afterwards had left the earlier debate over his fitness in the shade, but acknowledged the concern about recurring injury.”Everyone was working together with the same thing in mind to try to get Michael recovered and fit and ready to play,” Sutherland said. “There may well have been some slightly different views about what was best in terms of preparation, but really that’s all a moot point now.”Things have moved on, we’ve seen the extraordinary and tragic circumstances of Phillip’s death and we hope Michael’s okay and he’s back on the ground very soon. It’s always a worrying sign when the Australian captain’s carrying any sort of injury. We’ll leave it in the capable hands of Alex Kountouris and he can weave a bit of magic overnight perhaps.”

Upbeat West Indies hunt for consistency

West Indies have won 18 and lost 20 games in the last two years. Following an all-round performance in Kochi, they will be looking to work on their consistency

Agarkar: Kohli should continue at No. 3

Match factsOctober 11, 2014
Start time 1430 local (0900 GMT)Big PictureWest Indies are an erratic one-day team. They can be prone to self-destruction. West Indies are an endearing one-day team. Their batting line-up boasts the kind of power that excites most followers of cricket, and they have a number of interesting characters in there. Addressing this split-personality issue would be high on the visitor’s agenda with the World Cup on the horizon, and they took a step towards that in Kochi despite being without a few first-choice players. They bucked a perception of their batsmen being allergic to singles – there were 92 of them in a total of 321 – and their bowlers harnessed the advantage of a huge total well. Sustaining a performance like that has been a problem though as a record of 18 wins against 20 losses over the past two years suggests.India would want to orchestrate a recurrence of those problems. Their go-to method for that at home is to strangle the opposition by spin. But R Ashwin, who has bowled 85 overs with an economy rate of 5.34 in the last 12 months at home, has been rested for this series. They do, however, have Ravindra Jadeja, who has gone for 5.23 an over in that period. That is why MS Dhoni said he was more concerned with zeroing in on his seam bowlers for the World Cup. Yet, as Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin showed, if India’s spinners are attacked they can be coaxed into bowling flatter and quicker, and in essence limiting their chances of turning the ball.Another strength-turned-concern for India is the form of their top order. Virat Kohli’s weakness outside off stump has followed him home from England. Ambati Rayudu contributed to his own dismissal when he ran down and swiped to mid-on. Shikhar Dhawan was not as fluent as he normally is but mustered the only notable contribution with 68. India would hope Kochi was just a blip on the radar.Form guideIndia LLWWW (Completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies WWWWLWatch out forMohammed Shami is one of India’s bowlers who has been tasked with handling the death overs. He can dig those yorkers in at the batsmen’s boots, but when they go awry, they really go awry. A pin-point yorker uprooted Kieron Pollard’s leg stump, but another attempt at it offered Denesh Ramdin a very high full toss that was dispatched over point for six. India would hope he cultivates better consistency before the World Cup.Sulieman Benn is the only specialist spinner West Indies have on this tour. His height has made him awkward to deal and he marries that with good accuracy. Subcontinent conditions will give him turn as well. He was needed for only five overs in Kochi and conceded only 16. He might expect to bowl a few more in Delhi.Team newsWith Mohit Sharma’s injury, India’s bowling will need a makeover. Ishant Sharma has been roped in as replacement and might get to play straightaway. Dhoni was happy with his bowlers in Kochi, but there might be a temptation to swap out Amit Mishra, who conceded 72 in 10 overs, for chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav.India (likely): 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Amit Mishra/Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Ishant Sharma/Umesh Yadav, 11 Mohammed ShamiWest Indies made do with a make-shift opening combination in the first ODI, with Lendl Simmons recovering from a back injury. Unless he has regained fitness, they might keep to the same XI.West Indies (likely): 1 Dwayne Smith, 2 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 D Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard 7 Darren Sammy, 8 Andre Russell, 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Jerome TaylorPitch and weatherThe pitch at Feroz Shah Kotla has received some bad press in recent times. Delhi captain Gautam Gambhir wanted three of his home games in the last Ranji season shifted elsewhere in search of an outright result. The curator hopes to change that image and has said he was preparing a surface on which batsmen can trust the bounce and bowlers can enjoy good carry. On the eve of this match, the pitch was reported to be quite green, but that was expectedly only to hold it together and would be shaved off. The weather is expected to be sunny, but later on dew is expected to be a factor again.Stats & trivia Despite West Indies being regular visitors to India, the two teams have met only once in Delhi since the turn of the century – a Test in 2011 Virat Kohli is 79 runs away from becoming the fourth India batsman to score 1000 runs against West Indies. Quotes”Those six innings that I failed [in the England Tests] probably will help me to play 50 good innings.”
“Our challenge is to see if we can repeat our success from the previous ODI or come close with a good performance.”

Bowlers, Villani give Australia 3-0 lead

Australia Women took a 3-0 lead in the T20 series after another decisive win against the struggling Pakistan Women side in Gold Coast on Wednesday

ScorecardFile photo: Australia Women’s opener Elyse Villani struck her second fifty of the T20 series•Getty ImagesAustralia Women took a 3-0 lead in the T20 series after another decisive win against the struggling Pakistan Women’s side in Gold Coast on Wednesday. A win in the fourth T20 on Friday will take Australia’s score line in the T20 series to 4-0, the exact margin by which they won the ODI series last month.Pakistan’s highest T20 score in their last two games was 92 and they couldn’t better that in the third match after they won the toss and opted to bat. The Australia bowlers struck early – Julie Hunter, Delissa Kimmince and Erin Osborne had removed Pakistan’s top order by the sixth over, leaving them tottering at 18 for 3. Nain Abidi held the innings together with a 42-ball 30 but had no partners who could lift Pakistan to a more competitive total. Three run-outs towards the end of the innings only hastened Pakistan’s slide and they eventually finished at 9 for 84 from their 20 overs.Australia cantered to victory despite the early loss of Kimmince. Elyse Villani scored her second fifty of the series, a 39-ball 50 in which she struck nine fours. She hit both Sania Khan and Qanita Jalil for three fours in an over and within a space of 15 balls between the sixth and the eighth overs, moved from a score of 11 off 15 balls to 43 off 30, decimating Pakistan’s already slim chances. She fell when Australia were eight runs short of the target and they completed the formalities in the 12th over.
