A preview of the T20 Canada tournament in Toronto

The publicity for the tournament was rather last-minute and the buying of tickets might have needed more perseverance than ideal, but the four-nation T20 Canada competition kicks off on Friday in Toronto. If the hype is to be believed, there will be big crowds at the four-day event, despite the withdrawal of West Indies and their replacement with the less attractive Zimbabweans. They better have warm clothing as the temperatures are decidedly chilly and are unlikely to rise into double figures for the early match. The main draw for organisers are Pakistan, who landed less than 24 hours before the first match at 9.30am on Friday after hassles with visas for some of their players. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka arrived a day earlier, so none of the three visiting sides have had much time to acclimatise to the early-autumn conditions. The ground at Maple Leaf CC has been given a complete overhaul. Stands can accommodate 10,000 spectators and there is also a large video screen for replays as well as improved media and player facilities. The capital has been underwritten by the Dubai-based organisers who are promoting Canada as a major tourist destination. With hosts Canada making up the four teams, it is hard to see how the final can be anything other than a Pakistan-Sri Lanka affair. Canada are among the lowest-ranked of the leading Associates, and Zimbabwe have done nothing in the last year to suggest that their Twenty20 victory over Australia in September 2007 was anything other than a flash in the pan. The star of that win, Brendan Taylor, is absent, again after falling out with the board.

Marsh called up to replace Jaques

Shaun Marsh has been called up to replace the injured Phil Jaques for Australia’s tour of India

Shaun Marsh has been called up to replace the injured Phil Jaques for Australia’s tour of India. Jaques was sent home to seek specialist treatment for a long-standing back injury and became the second squad member after Bryce McGain to depart early from the trip. His absence gives Marsh, a highly rated batsman and the son of Australia’s former opener and coach, Geoff, another opportunity at the highest level. Marsh has impressed during his eight ODI appearances, which came in the West Indies and in Darwin against Bangladesh this year, although he has yet to make his Test debut.Significantly, Marsh has experience of Indian conditions; he played for Kings XI Punjab in the IPL earlier this year and ended the tournament as the highest run scorer. Although he has only just started opening for Western Australia at first-class level having batted at No. 3 for much of his career, he was Australia’s preferred choice to replace the specialist opener Jaques. The call-up has capped off an emotional few days for Marsh, whose grandfather Ted died on Sunday. “Obviously, it’s been a tough week for the family but [I’m] looking forward to getting over there and hopefully, if I get a game, I’ll be able to do it for pop,” Marsh told .”I gave dad a quick call. He’s pretty happy. He’s had a tough few days so hopefully it lifts him up a little bit. He’ll be very proud.”Marsh knows his chances of a Test debut are slim – he is likely to play only if injury strikes one of the top six – but he is happy just to be part of the squad. If he does feature in one of the remaining two games he will become just the second son to follow his father into Australia’s Test team after Syd Gregory, whose father Ned played in the first Test of all in 1877.”Obviously, I won’t be playing but I’ll be over there trying my best to get the boys up and doing whatever I can for them,” Marsh said. “It’s crazy to be honest with you. It’s a dream come true to be on a Test tour. It’s something I’ve worked really hard for over the last 12 months.”Getting in the one-day team was a huge privilege but to be part of the Test team now … just being over there and being a part of it is an amazing feeling and I’m really looking forward to that. If I get an opportunity, that would be fantastic.”Marsh got the nod ahead of the in-form Brad Hodge, while Andrew Symonds was not a realistic option as he continues his staged comeback after being cut from the squad in Darwin. The selectors were swayed by Marsh’s versatility.”Shaun has been selected having opened the batting for Australia in the one-day international arena and shown great potential,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “He has recently moved to opening the batting in all three forms of the game in interstate competition and played very well in Western Australia’s run chase and victory at the WACA against New South Wales.”As a replacement batsman on the tour, should the opportunity arise, we are confident that Shaun could fill any role in the batting order. We have also taken the opportunity to enhance Shaun’s international experience as we consider him to be one of the promising young batsmen in Australia capable of having a significant impact in Australian cricket in the future.”The third Test gets underway on October 29 in Delhi. India lead the series 1-0 with two matches to play.

Bassey was Rangers’ star vs Dunfermline

Rangers bounced back from Champions League disappointment with a resounding 5-0 win against Dunfermline in the League Cup at Ibrox on Friday night, with Steven Gerrard’s side clearly out to impress after a difficult start to the 2021/22 campaign.

John Lundstram gave the hosts an early lead with his first goal for the club, smashing home Calvin Bassey’s cutback in the third minute against the Championship side.

Scott Wright quickly made it 2-0 with a fine individual goal, turning his man before firing emphatically past Deniz Mehmet in the Dunfermline goal. Ianis Hagi then met another fine Bassey cross to make it 3-0 with less than 20 minutes on the clock, with Rangers’ place in the quarter-finals secured early on.

Kemar Roofe made it 4-0 shortly after the half-hour mark after some fine play involving Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo, and he completed his brace in the second half with a penalty to complete the scoring.

Why was Bassey Rangers’ star vs Dunfermline?

Whilst the former Leeds United man was impressive in front of goal, it was left-back Bassey who was arguably the top performer for Gerrard’s side at Ibrox, with his two assists crucial to the victory.

After the disappointment of Tuesday, which saw both Borna Barisic and James Tavernier waste a number of crosses, it was refreshing for Rangers fans to see Bassey and Nathan Patterson look dangerous going forward from full-back, with the 21-year-old’s inch-perfect assist for Hagi suggesting that he should perhaps get the nod ahead of his Croatian teammate in future games.

Following the game, Herald Scotland’s David Irvine rated Bassey 9/10 for his performance, writing: “Tremendous. The full-back was a standout performer at Ibrox teeing up the first with a clever cut-back before a pinpoint cross for the third. Non-stop running and excellent crossing all night.”

BBC also named the 21-year-old as their man of the match, so it seems that the young defender was indeed the star in an impressive win on Friday night, and has perhaps played himself into contention for the Europa League qualifier against Alashkert next Thursday.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Leon Bailey links

Aston Villa are eyeing up a move for Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey and are said to be preparing an offer for the 23-year-old [Daily Mail].

Enjoying a fantastic 2020/21 campaign, the Jamaican registered 26 goal contributions in 40 appearances; 15 goals and 11 assists [Transfermarkt].

Setting the Bundesliga alight, Bailey could now have a decision to make on his future.

Villa are said to be readying an official approach for the wide-man, who is reportedly seen as being worth between £25 million to £30million [Daily Mail].

He is said to be seen as an attainable target for the Villains, who are looking to bolster their squad depth as Trezeguet recovers from injury.

As you can imagine, loads of Aston Villa diehards took to Twitter to rejoice at these latest developments.

Aston Villa FC fans react:

Newcastle keen on Axel Tuanzebe

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, the Magpies are are monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation at Manchester United and Steve Bruce would be interested in signing the defender on loan or permanently this summer.

The report claims that Newcastle have been priced out of deals to sign Kristoffer Ajer and Ozan Kabak from Celtic and Schalke 04 respectively, with the former said to be heading to newly-promoted Brentford. Attentions have now turned to alternative targets, with Tuanzebe one of the names on the club’s hitlist.

Bruce needs him

Mike Ashley must sanction a deal to prise Tuanzebe away from Old Trafford in the coming weeks, as he could be a superb addition to Bruce’s squad. 27-year-old Jamaal Lascelles is his youngest natural centre-back option and Paul Dummett’s WhoScored rating of 6.66 was the best of the bunch in that position, suggesting that it could be time for fresh blood at St James’ Park in the centre of the defence.

Therefore, Tuanzebe could be an ideal signing for Newcastle. He is in the early stages of his career at 23, which means that he could be a long-term centre-back option for the club instead of a short-term fix  if they are able to sign him on a permanent deal. The Englishman has also shown glimpses of his quality in the first team for Manchester United.

His performances for the Red Devils in the 2019/20 Europa League showed that he has the potential to be a good player in the Premier League. Tuanzebe averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.22 in three starts, winning 4.7 aerial battles per game.

The defender then continued to catch the eye in Europe last season. Back in October, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed the “tremendous” Tuanzebe as a leader after his performance against PSG in the Champions League up against French forward Kylian Mbappe.

The Red Devils boss said: “Axel’s a tremendous defender, a great leader. He’s come through the academy and we’ve known for years that he’s going to be a top player for us and he’s got the character and the attitude that a Man United player should have.

“Sometimes you’ll get in a foot race with Mbappe and you have to run with him and we know Axel’s qualities, he’s a top defender.”

Therefore, the £38,000-per-week powerhouse could be a much-needed addition to Newcastle’s squad, and Bruce will be delighted if a deal can be done for him ahead of next season. He clearly impressed Solskjaer enough to earn high praise from him after playing against Mbappe, which bodes well for him playing week-in-week-out in the Premier League for Newcastle if they can bring him to Tyneside.

AND in other news, Newcastle handed boost over £15m “phenomenon”, Bruce will surely be buzzing…

Celtic: Hoops reignite Ben Davies interest

Celtic have reignited their interest in Liverpool defender Ben Davies, according to The Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan.

The Lowdown: January drama

The Hoops looked set to sign Davies on a pre-contract agreement from Preston North End during the winter window. Reports suggested that a deal was all but completed, but the Reds came in at the last minute and signed him from Preston in a deal worth £2m to solve their defensive shortages.

Described as a ‘left sider’ by Charlie Adam, the centre-back is still waiting to make his Liverpool debut, and it seems as if Celtic are planning to go back in for the 25-year-old this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-8/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: McGowan’s claim

According to McGowan in The Daily Mail, the Hoops are back in the hunt for the centre-back. He claimed in a story on Thursday evening that Celtic are in competition with a number of English clubs looking to tie up a season-long loan deal.

Liverpool would rather sell Davies, who is on £60,000-a-week, but it seems as if the Hoops are eyeing a temporary move for him.

The Verdict: Centre-back links keep coming

By our count, Davies is the fourth centre-back who has been linked with a move to Parkhead in the past few weeks. The Hoops have also been credited with an interest in Hadjuk Split’s Mario Vuskovic, Rubin Kazan’s Carl Starfelt and Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Bringing in two of the four could well be handy, especially with Kristoffer Ajer looking for a move away this summer.

That would leave Ange Postecoglou with Stephen Welsh, the injured Christopher Jullien and new signing Osaze Urhoghide as centre-back options, so securing two of the four should leave him with more than enough options in that department for his first season in charge.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Marc Guehi signing

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of defender Marc Guehi from Chelsea on a five-year-deal, as per Sky Sports.

The England Under-21 international was almost ever-present on loan at Swansea City last season, making 45 appearances in all competitions [Transfermarkt].

He has now formalised a move to Selhurst Park to join the Eagles in a transfer believed to be worth around £20m, according to Goal.com.

Within the agreement, his former employers are said to have included sell-on incentives should he depart Selhurst Park for pastures new in the coming years. Furthermore, Chelsea also have also included the option to match any future bids which come in for the 21-year-old [Sky Sports].

After the deal was confirmed by the club, loads of Palace fans took to Twitter to express their delight at the news of the “quality signing”.
