LUFC: Whelan on Gelhardt’s debut chances

In a recent interview, former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan discussed Joe Gelhardt’s chances of becoming the surprise replacement for Patrick Bamford on Friday if the latter cannot get over his knock.

Since joining Leeds from Wigan Athletic last summer, Gelhardt has been in rather remarkable form for the club’s U23 side, scoring eight goals and providing three assists over his 14 appearances in the Premier League 2.

However, despite his impressive form for the youth side, the £5,100 per week centre-forward has still yet to make his first-team debut for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Although, with Patrick Bamford picking up an injury in the club’s recent 0-0 draw with Chelsea, and, at present, the 27-year-old remaining a slight doubt for the upcoming clash with Fulham, Gelhardt could theoretically be in line to replace the striker in Bielsa’s starting XI.

However, speaking recently to Football Insider, Whelan claimed that he couldn’t imagine the 18-year-old being thrown in at the deep end by Bielsa this Friday, suggesting that Rodrigo could be played in a more advanced role instead.

He said: “I’m not sure if he will [start]. We’ll probably see him more on the bench, but while we still need points to guarantee safety, I can’t see that actually happening.

“I think you’ve got to go for experience and tried and trusted players in Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts, depending on which way they want to play it and which way round they want it.

“It’ll be hard to justify a £29 million player sitting on the bench for a teenager who hasn’t had any game time for Leeds United.

“It’s a massive loss losing Patrick and it was a massive risk. We knew that from two years ago when he was our only striker and he’s done so well not getting injured until now.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Indeed, considering Bielsa’s apparent reluctance to field Gelhardt previously this season, it would be a surprising turn of events if the 65-year-old suddenly changes his mind and opts to throw the teenager in from the start against Fulham.

However, considering how impressive Gelhardt has been for the U23 side this term, perhaps he does deserve a chance in the first team, something which would also bring the benefit of allowing Bamford more time to recover from his knock.

Arsenal must land RB Salzburg starlet Dominik Szoboszlai in the January transfer window

According to The Athletic, Arsenal transfer target Dominik Szoboszlai’s release clause must be paid in one installment, and that any bids must be lodged by the end of this month.

What’s the story?

One of the hottest properties in European football right now, the RB Salzburg starlet has been in scintillating form for his side this season, bagging eight goals and providing nine assists in just 18 games.

Arsenal’s interest in the Hungary sensation has long been reported, and now The Athletic have offered a huge update on what the future potentially holds.

It’s suggested that there is a stipulation in the attacking midfielder’s release clause that “Szoboszlai must give notice by December 15 of his wish to depart and bids must be lodged by December 31”.

Can be Arteta’s game-changer

After another demoralising defeat in the Premier League at the weekend, this is undoubtedly the lowest moment in Mikel Arteta’s short tenure at Arsenal.

The Spaniard’s successes in winning both the FA Cup and Community Shield just a few months ago have been quickly forgotten, with a 2-0 loss to Spurs on Sunday the latest blow to the club’s hope of bigger and better things.

The Gunners have scored just ten times in their opening 11 Premier League games this season, and they are crying out for someone to bring a bit of creativity and energy to their attack.

And in the £22.5m-rated Szoboszlai, they can find exactly that. The Hungarian, described by his Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch as being the “modern-day David Beckham”, is an incredibly exciting talent.

Capable of unleashing long-range rockets and shining on the biggest stage too – he’s netted twice in the Champions League this season including against Atletico Madrid away from home – Szoboszlai can provide the kind of spark that Arsenal desperately need.

Stan Kroenke must surely open up his cheque-book and give Arteta the player that could hold the key to turning their fortunes this year.

Leeds: Bielsa doesn’t need to sign Martin Braithwaite whilst Bamford is around

Leeds have been linked to a move for out of favour Barcelona man Martin Braithwaite. According to Ekstra Bladet (via Sport Witness), the striker isn’t looking to pursue a move in January but the La Liga giants are trying to convince him otherwise.

He was originally signed as a panic decision in order to boost numbers, but as expected, he has now fallen drastically down the pecking order under Ronald Koeman. Despite being contracted until 2024, the Catalonians are looking to make a quick sale on Braithwaite and the Whites are said to be in the running for his signature.

But despite the attractive nature of his £6.7million Transfermarkt value, Leeds should avoid making a move for the underwhelming striker.

Why Leeds should snub Braithwaite transfer

The 29-year-old has been limited to just six cameo appearances for Barcelona this season across all competitions and he is yet to open up his scoring portfolio for the term.

Last campaign, despite playing for both Barca and Leganes, Braithwaite only managed to tally seven goals and one assist in 35 league appearances. For a striker yet to reach 30 years of age, these numbers aren’t exactly spellbinding and certainly don’t justify spending £15million on him in February (via BBC Sport).

The Denmark international has already spent time in England during his Middlesbrough era, one that also left a lot to be desired. Braithwaite netted just nine times in 40 appearances for the Boro before moving to Spain, and despite Tony Pulis lauding him as an “exceptional” player, he clearly struggled to adapt to the high intensity of English football.

But if the Dane couldn’t hack Championship football, it’s more than likely that he would be bowled over by the demand of the Premier League.

Leeds earned promotion after a painful 16 years away from England’s top flight and they will need to recruit wisely in January in order to ensure they survive their first season back. Patrick Bamford is crying out for a strike partner to help him carry the Whites forward, but an international forward who struggles to reach double figures is not an ideal option for the 27-year-old sharp-shooter.

Inspired Joe Gomez performance against Sheffield United will put Jurgen Klopp’s mind at rest

Liverpool put in a solid performance on Saturday to ensure they came away with nothing less than three points from their latest home fixture. The Reds played host to a struggling Sheffield United, who put the reigning champions to the sword. However, despite their best efforts to nullify Jurgen Klopp’s side, Liverpool were able to resurrect their winning Premier League form.

Thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota, the title holders are on their way to re-establishing their dominance after their 7-2 loss to Aston Villa threw a spanner in the works. But it wasn’t just Klopp’s attack that had an influence on the match. His makeshift defence did him proud and will have eased a lot of his worries after key man Virgil van Dijk could be out for the remainder of the season.

Joe Gomez impressed against Sheffield United

Despite worry from the fans, Joe Gomez is doing a fine job of stepping into his Dutch partner’s shoes. In the absence of van Dijk’s calm composure and natural leadership, things looked bleak at the back for Liverpool. However, Klopp’s pairing of the England international and Fabinho has proved to be a winning formula so far.

The two were strong at the back against Ajax and continued their impressive displays at Anfield on Saturday. Gomez particularly impressed and will have undoubtedly eased a lot of pressure off Klopp’s shoulders.

According to Sofascore, the 23-year-old maintained a 94% passing accuracy and was successful in 100% of his 12 attempted long balls. Additionally, Gomez made a mighty nine clearances and two interceptions, showing his confidence exactly where it was needed to be put on display.

Fans are thrilled with the £36million-rated centre-back and have waxed lyrical about the VVD-esque shift he put in against the Blades. One supporter has said that he is “proving everyone wrong” amid the doubt over whether he will be able to lead Liverpool’s defence this campaign (via Rousing The Kop).

His teammates, fans and manager will definitely be pleased with both him and Fabinho. Their next challenge will come against Midtjylland in the Champions League, which could be another chance to showcase his presence across the backline.

Fikayo Tomori: West Ham could finally end centre-back nightmare

West Ham United are set to launch a late bid for a Premier League centre-back, according to emerging reports tonight…

What’s the word?

According to Football.London, the Irons are poised to make a loan move for Chelsea centre-back Fikayo Tomori as the Blues look set to keep hold of Antonio Rudiger despite interest from across Europe.

It means Frank Lampard has five senior central defenders and would like to move one of them on before the transfer deadline late this evening.

David Moyes has been keen to add a player in the role all summer and now he finally could be in luck.

Impressive coup

The Hammers are in dire need of an extra centre-back, even more so after a recent switch to a three-at-the-back formation which saw full-back Aaron Cresswell utilised in the middle.

Tomori going out on loan not only ends the nightmare that Moyes has been facing all summer but could also help progress his career forward before he returns to Stamford Bridge and takes over from the recently-signed Thiago Silva.

The England international played 15 times in the top-flight last season, averaging 2.8 clearances, 2.3 aerials won, 1.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

Lampard believes the 6 foot 1 colossus is a “great talent,” so he certainly won’t want to let him leave on a permanent basis.

Whilst speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, Shaun Goater claimed that the £14.4m-rated defender could one day become a “£100m player” if he continues his meteoric rise in English football.

It may be awfully late in the window and it may be a last resort but a move for Tomori could turn out to be very smart business for the resurgent Irons.

Many Everton fans slam Jordan Pickford after Blackpool draw

Despite the continuous errors over the past few seasons, Jordan Pickford has somehow remained both Everton and England’s number one.

The 26-year-old has endured his fair share of high-profile howlers – Toffees fans certainly won’t be forgetting his last-minute clanger back in December 2018 against arch-rivals Liverpool anytime soon.

And whilst he may not have had a similar sort of mishap in Everton’s pre-season clash against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon, he certainly didn’t enjoy the greatest of games.

How big of an Everton fan are you? Can you spot Mikel Arteta from Graham Stuart? This quiz will test your knowledge, try it if you’re brave enough…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Merseyside club were torn to pieces in the opening ten minutes, with the Seasiders romping away to a three-goal lead, Pickford offering no resistance whatsoever.

And perhaps just to underline how miserable of a game he had, after being withdrawn at half-time, Pickford watched on as Carlo Ancelotti’s side salvaged some pride and rescued a 3-3 draw.

But after seeing yet another disappointing performance from their number one, Everton fans took to Twitter to voice their frustrations.

A few Everton fans simply insisted that they need to get rid of Pickford this summer, and that they had had enough.

It’s no surprise that some Everton fans seem to have had enough with Pickford and his antics.

A goalkeeper’s main job is simply to prevent goals from going on, but not only does the England international seem to be letting the relatively easy ones in, he also has a habit of gifting the opposition ones too – in his time in the Premier League, he has made 13 errors that have directly led to goals.

As a couple of Toffees fans suggest, maybe it’s the perfect time to get rid.
