Aston Villa fans respond to 2-2 draw with Manchester United from 2010

Although both Aston Villa and Manchester United are experiencing particularly inconsistent starts to the 2019/20 campaign, these Villa fans have been reliving their encounter between the two teams from November 2010, with many bemoaning their recent record against the 13-time Premier League champions.

Goals from Ashley Young and Marc Albrighton had given the West Midlands side a two-goal lead in front of their home supporters, but United under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson fought back to secure a 2-2 draw.

That was courtesy of late strikes from Federico Macheda and Nemanja Vidic as they left Villa Park with a point.

Villa’s record against United is particularly damning since the turn of the millennium, having won just one game in 38 fixtures across all competitions. The video above reliving their 2-2 draw against the Manchester-based side has got these fans venting their frustration at such a poor recent record alongside their disappointment at the result itself.

Here are some of the best reactions following a video resurfacing of the fixture on its ninth anniversary.

West Ham fans react to reports that David Moyes could take over from Manuel Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini may not have been dismissed as West Ham United manager, but that has not stopped reports coming out regarding who could replace him at London Stadium.

Hammers fans have already reacted to links with Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe among others, though there is now another name for them to discuss.

This time it is an old face that has already been in the dugout for West Ham: David Moyes.

Plenty of Hammers are not happy about the revelation from club insider ExWHUemployee, feeling that a move for Moyes would show a distinct lack of ambition from the board.

The move from Upton Park to London Stadium has also been brought up, as a move for a manager who has already been discarded by the club is deemed as evidence that lifting everyone out of their spiritual home has come to nothing.

One fan has even compared the idea of recruiting Moyes with remarrying an ex-wife having gone through with a divorce.

There are some fans who are optimistic about the idea of having David Moyes come in though.

When he came to West Ham in November 2017, the Scotsman earned 1.19 points per game, keeping the club in the Premier League as a result of that.

His biggest impact last time around was moving Marko Arnautovic into a central striker role, which saw him score 11 league goals and provide six assists that campaign, having failed to get any before the manager’s arrival.

However, the optimism surrounding Moyes coming to London Stadium isn’t shared by many, with some Hammers fans indicating they would rather stick with Pellegrini.

This says a lot, considering how many West Ham fans have been calling for the manager’s head in recent times.

In other news, if West Ham were to get one of their other linked managers, it would be a sign of the club’s pulling power.

Arsenal unhappy with David Ornstein’s tweet on Unai Emery’s future

Unai Emery is under pressure at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal started the season quite well, winning their opening two matches in the Premier League against Newcastle and Burnley, but they have been victorious in just two of their last eight.

Just like against Watford, the Gunners were unable to hold on to a 2-0 lead against Crystal Palace and could only come away with a 2-2 draw.

Arsenal fans have started to turn on Unai Emery, find out who they’d rather have in charge in the video below…

The club’s supporters clearly want the former Sevilla boss to leave their club, but it looks as though he will not be departing any time soon, at least according to journalist David Ornstein.

Writing for The Athletic, he says that the 47-year-old still has the support of the Emirates Stadium outfit’s hierarchy and that he could even be given until the end of the season.

This has gone down like a lead balloon amongst a large group of the team’s fans. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini cost the Hammers by making Ajeti change too late

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

After starting the Premier League campaign so brightly, West Ham were brought back down to Earth with a shuddering halt as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat away to Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Snapshot

The Hammers could have gone just one point behind last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City with a victory at Goodison Park, but a rather insipid display saw them lose to a team that had suffered four defeats on the trot.

Bernard’s first-half goal gave the Toffees a deserved lead at half-time, and though Manuel Pellegrini tried to shake things up with the introduction of Andriy Yarmolenko at the break, the Hammers didn’t really lay a significant glove on the home side.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

Despite only trailing 1-0, the West Ham boss waited until there were only 16 minutes left before bringing on summer signing and bona-fide striker Albian Ajeti – a decision that proved to be too little, too late.

Off the bench

Though both sides were relatively even in possession, it was Everton who always looked the more dangerous. As per Sofascore, Marco Silva’s side registered 19 total shots on goal compared to the visitors’ measly eight. That dominance was largely in part to the complete isolation of Hammers forward Sebastien Haller.

The Frenchman had just 43 touches of the ball, whilst he comprehensively lost his physical battle against Toffees centre-backs Michael Keane and Yerry Mina – only managing to win nine out of his 22 aerial duels. As a result, West Ham had no platform to build from going forward, and the ball just kept coming back towards their own goal far too easily.

Pellegrini needed to provide Haller with some more support, and bringing on Ajeti far earlier could have helped occupy the dominant Everton defence. It was rather telling that it was only after the Swiss man’s introduction that the London side enjoyed their only brief spell of concerted pressure.

The West Ham boss was perhaps afraid that if he gambled too soon, the Toffees would just hit them on the break and close out the game. But because of his reluctance to roll the dice sooner, Pellegrini cost his side a chance of snatching a result they did not deserve – the real hallmark of a truly good side.

Leeds’ Liam Cooper paints a negative picture despite victory

What a difference just three days make. Only at the weekend, Leeds fans were concerned with Marcelo Bielsa and the way their team was playing.

Yet, flash forward to Tuesday evening and they were defeating previously unbeaten West Brom.

It was an ideal way to bounce back from a loss against Charlton, hitting back to return to the top of the table.

The goal came courtesy of a driven effort from Gjanni Alioski as for once, Leeds were the team that perhaps didn’t deserve to win.

They had the least possession but still came out on top against an Albion team inspired under Slaven Bilic.

This was a different performance from the Whites. The frailties and lack of focus that was there against both Derby and Charlton were eradicated as a steely nature and attitude was shown at Elland Road.

There were plenty of positives to take from the win but it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows in west Yorkshire.

Jamie Shackleton had to go off injured but the biggest concern should lie with Liam Cooper.

The image above shows the Scot trudging off the pitch on Tuesday evening as he paints a picture of discomfort and negativity.

Cooper appeared to pull up with a muscle problem and was consequently replaced by Gaetano Berardi in the first half.

Leeds did go onto keep a clean sheet but it will be a big negative that one of their most influential team members and club captain faces up to six weeks out.

The Whites are already missing Adam Forshaw and Pablo Hernandez to injury so to lose two more of their squad is far from ideal.

After all, Leeds had used just 17 squad members this season before Tyler Roberts and Luke Ayling appeared on Tuesday – a league-low for the Championship. Bielsa will have to dig deep into his reserves to ensure results are still attainable.

Aston Villa will struggle this season, Jamie O’Hara claims

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…Former Wolves midfielder Jamie O’Hara has given a strong prediction on Aston Villa’s quest to stay in the top-flight.

What’s he said?

Villa have so far found life in the Premier League very tough – they sit fourth from bottom with just one win to their name.

Last Monday night, the west Midlands club struggled to see off ten-men West Ham as the two sides battled out a 0-0 draw.

Defensively, they look sound enough recording two clean sheets which is the joint highest for the most in the league so far this season. However, in attack, they have are one of the lowest scorers in the division, so it’s clear to see where their problem lies.

O’Hara, who is now a manager at Billericay Town, spoke to talkSPORT about Villa’s survival chances. He said:

“I think they’re going to struggle to be honest. I think they’re a brilliant club, I lived up there when I was at Wolves and it’s a huge, huge football club – fantastic stadium, I always loved playing there.

“But I just think that they’re going to struggle. They’ve spent a lot of money but it just hasn’t clicked yet. I hope it does, I really do.

“I just can’t see it clicking. Have they got enough to keep them up? I don’t know.”

Finding a solution

It is only September, but that still can often mean the writing is on the wall for some clubs.

Villa’s problem is clear to see, as already mentioned. It’s in scoring goals.

The manager failed in getting an additional option in the transfer window. The club had been linked to several strikers including Neal Maupay, Mbaye Diagne and Jean-Kevin Augustin.

So they will have to make do with club-record arrival Wesley and the wingers around him.

In January, if the problem still lingers, they can take measures to find a solution by bringing in further firepower.

They just can’t afford to slip away from the rest of the league before then and to be fair, they have been more than competitive in the majority of their matches. For instance, against Tottenham, they remained in the game until the 73rd minute before a late flurry of goals made the scoreline rather flattering.

Birmingham are leaving Lukas Jutkiewicz with too much to do in isolated role

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

The Championship season is just three games old and Birmingham have experienced every result possible – a win, a draw and a loss in that very order, which sees them sit 15th in the table.

Their latest result, a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest suggests that four points from their opening two matches was somewhat a false front as they were exposed against an impressive Nottingham Forest side.

Birmingham were caught napping when Joe Lolley slotted home a low drive from a quickly-taken free-kick before headers from Lewis Grabban and Michael Dawson secured a 3-0 victory.

Scoring goals seems to be the problem for Pep Clotet’s men having lost two key men in the summer.

Che Adams joined Southampton in a £15m deal after netting 22 goals at St Andrew’s whilst Jota joined arch-rivals Aston Villa having laid on 11 assists.

The Blues have scored just two solitary goals in their three Championship matches.

On the Chalkboard

The problem may lie in how they set up with just one striker in attack.

As Lukas Jutkiewicz showed in the 3-0 drubbing by Forest, he’s given far too much to do without any real support.

His heatmap and touchmap, courtesy of WhoScored, show the areas of the pitch he occupied during spells of the game.

You don’t really want your striker coming deep or drifting out wide to try and get the ball – and even at 39 touches, it was the lowest of any other Birmingham player who started the game which suggests no one was able to sufficiently provide or support him.

The 30-year-old also recorded a poor passing success rate of just 38.1% whilst only two of his four shots hit the target. He meanwhile lost possession four times too.

Had another player been in the vicinity of him then maybe the striker would have had a much better game.

If Clotet is going to have any success with the West Midlands club going forward, he may need to find a system which would allow Jutkiewicz some sort of support up top.

Whether that be throwing attacking midfielder Dan Crowley further forward or playing their only other senior striker option Alvaro Gimenez alongside him.
