Jadeja, Dhawan move up in ICC rankings

Ravindra Jadeja moved to a career-best third place in the bowlers’ and allrounders’ lists in the ICC ODI rankings after playing a starring role in India’s win against England in the Champions Trophy final

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-2013Ravindra Jadeja moved to a career-best third place in the bowlers’ and allrounders’ lists in the ICC ODI rankings after playing a starring role in India’s five-run win against England in the final of the Champions Trophy at Edgbaston.Jadeja scored an unbeaten 33 off 25 after India were 66 for 5 and picked up two wickets for 24 runs in his four overs. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 12 wickets, which helped him move up a place in both the categories. His team-mate, R Ashwin, moved up six places to ninth rank among the bowlers.James Tredwell jumped up 15 places to 28th rank while Steven Finn dropped down two places to fourth after playing only one match in the tournament.Among the batsmen, Jonathan Trott, the second-highest run-scorer with 229 runs, moved up a place to fourth while MS Dhoni dropped down to fifth. Shikhar Dhawan, Man of the Tournament and the leading run-scorer, jumped 21 places to finish on 29th position. There weren’t any changes in the team rankings as India were already at No. 1 and runners-up England were No. 2 before the tournament started. India (123 points) consolidated their position by staying unbeaten during the series to gain a lead of 10 points over England (113). Australia are a fraction of a point behind England at third place; South Africa are fourth (111) and Sri Lanka fifth (108).

Bangladesh build lead after Robiul's five

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRobiul Islam led his team off the field after Bangladesh secured a big lead•Associated Press

The second and final Test between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh continues to hang by the proverbial thread. Bangladesh are 272 runs ahead with five wickets in hand, but are some way from dominating the proceedings.Zimbabwe fought back manfully in the second session, taking three quick wickets just before tea and adding two more in the final session. They were lucky too, being on the favourable end of two poor umpiring decisions and Shakib Al Hasan’s appalling shot late in the day.Shakib and captain Mushfiqur Rahim consolidated after Bangladesh had slipped to 65 for 4. The pair added 84 until Shakib got impatient, charged at Hamilton Masakadza’s innocuous medium-pace and edged behind like he had in the first innings. He fell this time for 59 off 104 balls, and had looked mostly in command. He was, however, dropped twice in the same region, behind point, on 45 and 48 but ultimately it was his own poor thinking that brought about his downfall.Mushfiqur remained solid till the end, remaining at the crease on 50 off 85 balls, tight in his defensive play. He was also mindful of variable bounce in the wicket, but took it ball by ball, rather than going after the bowling. It was quite different than the start of the Bangladesh second innings, which was nothing short of frenzy.Tamim Iqbal was the first to suffer at the hands of the umpire. The Shingi Masakadza delivery which rose considerably didn’t touch his bat as replays showed; in fact, the ball was quite far from the edge. But he was given the marching orders by umpire Tony Hill, who had earlier given two poor decisions in the Zimbabwe first innings too.Within a few overs, umpire Ian Gould was in action, adjudging Mohammad Ashraful leg-before to make it 18 for 3 when the Kyle Jarvis delivery looked to be sliding down even on first viewing. The replays confirmed this notion. Jahurul Islam was the second wicket to fall, when he prodded at a ball that was quite away from his body, edging it on way to the wicketkeeper. After tea, Mominul Haque gave away another good start and edged Shingi Masakadza to first slip to make it three for the fast bowler. The edge was easily caught by his brother Hamilton, the first instance in which both brothers were involved. Mominul had survived a dropped catch by Vusi Sibanda on 2 and a run-out in the 13th over, but he couldn’t make that count.Zimbabwe looked to be in the ascendancy with Shingi Masakadza bowling quite well. But they suffered without Keegan Meth’s accuracy and were later stalled by the Shakib-Mushfiqur partnership. The home side had earlier taken some control of the game in the first session with the bat but gave it away soon enough.Robiul Islam took five wickets, being Mushfiqur’s go-to man at every juncture. In the morning session, he broke the vital sixth-wicket stand between Elton Chigumbura and Richmond Mutumbami. He continued to be very accurate, unusual for a Bangladesh fast bowler. The other rare trait in this series for him has been his willingness to keep bowling. He found very little support from the two other seamers, as Mushfiqur insisted on using him in long spells. Sajidul Islam and Ziaur Rahman were hardly used, although the latter had Keegan Meth dropped at fine leg by Robiul.Chigumbura hammered eight fours and a six in his 111-ball 86, but he couldn’t complete the century after Robiul wrecked his off stump with a beautiful delivery. Before the dismissal, he got Zimbabwe past the follow-on mark and gave his bowlers a smaller deficit. He added 85 for the sixth wicket with Mutumbami, who made 42. The pair began slowly, but Chigumbura started to find boundaries regularly. Mutumbami joined in, even hammering a six off Shakib.Zimbabwe had gone off to a poor start to the day when Malcolm Waller holed out at deep square leg to a Sohag Gazi long-hop. It was a lucky day for Gazi who added the wicket of Meth, caught behind down the leg side. Gazi finished with four wickets, while Shakib took one. It was Shakib’s show with the bat, though, that was crucial.

Seamers, Rahane lift Supergiants to winning start

Rising Pune Supergiants made a sweet start to their life in the IPL, their seamers waylaying Mumbai Indians’ top order to set up a breezy nine-wicket win over the defending champions

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy09-Apr-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:10

‘We tried our best’ – Harbhajan Singh

Rising Pune Supergiants made a sweet start to their life in the IPL, their seamers waylaying Mumbai Indians’ top order to set up a breezy nine-wicket win over the defending champions. Chasing 122, they got there with 32 balls to spare, Ajinkya Rahane steering them home with a fluent unbeaten 66 off 42 balls. The pitch had lost most of its early bite when Supergiants batted, and Rahane quickly got into the groove with a pair of straight-driven fours off Mitchell McClenaghan, in the first and third overs of the innings. Any residual chasing nerves Supergiants may have had dissipated in McClenaghan’s third over – the fifth of the innings – when both Rahane and Faf du Plessis picked up sixes off mis-hits; they probably would not have carried all the way on a bigger ground.Nonetheless, Supergiants were well on their way, and the openers put on 78 before du Plessis played on to Harbhajan. It left the rest of the batting a mere 44 to get from 62 balls, and Kevin Pietersen hastened their passage home with a couple of monster sixes off Harbhajan. The 15th over began with Supergiants needing eight to win, and Rahane finished the game with two sixes in four balls, clubbing Hardik Pandya over the long-on boundary and then ramping him over the third man boundary.Mumbai made life easier for Supergiants, with Jos Buttler fluffing a chance to run du Plessis out after a dreadful mix-up between the openers, and Shreyas Gopal missing a caught-and-bowled off Rahane. The season began on a Wankhede Stadium pitch dissimilar to the easy-paced, hit-through-the-line surfaces offered up during the World T20, and Mumbai, after surprisingly deciding to bat first, struggled against the seam movement and bounce. They only got as far as 121 because Harbhajan climbed into Pune’s bowling towards the end of the innings, clubbing an unbeaten 45 off 30 balls and scoring the bulk of the 41 runs Mumbai made in the last three overs.Till his intervention, they seemed to be struggling to even get to 100. Ishant Sharma, getting the ball to nip around and climb on the batsmen, and Mitchell Marsh, getting late swing away from the right-handers, reduced them to 30 for 4 by the end of the fifth over, and it became 40 for 5 when Rajat Bhatia trapped Kieron Pollard lbw with an offcutter in the eighth over.Apart from helping the quicker bowlers, the pitch was also offering Bhatia grip, and Mumbai struggled for rhythm against his stump-to-stump mix of cutters and slower balls. He finished with figures of 1 for 10 from four overs. Shreyas Gopal, who made 2 off 16 balls, faced nine balls from Bhatia and failed to score off any of them.Gopal’s stay at the wicket came to an end when he holed out to long-off off the bowling of M Ashwin, the debutant legspinner. Nerves were evident in the number of short balls M Ashwin sent down – they gripped and turned too much for the Mumbai batsmen to do very much with them – but he also bowled a couple of ripping googlies that hinted at the potential Supergiants must have seen in him to shell out INR 4.5 crore for his services. His more famous namesake R Ashwin, meanwhile, only bowled the one over, continuing a puzzling trend of being under-utilised by MS Dhoni. He struck with his first ball – just as Ishant, Marsh and Bhatia had also done – but that first ball came after a 15-over wait. Dhoni declined to use him after that, entrusting the final overs to RP Singh and Ishant. Though Harbhajan took heavy toll of those overs, Mumbai had made far too little before that for his runs to make too much of a difference.

All-round Tuskers crush Rhinos

ScorecardA century from Bilal Shafayat, a knock of 87 from Sean Williams, and a combined effort by bowlers helped Matabeleland Tuskers clinch an innings-and-104-run victory over Mid West Rhinos in Bulawayo. Seamers Njabulo Ncube and Glen Querl, with five wickets each, bowled Rhinos out for 179 after Tuskers had scored 406, and forced them to follow on. Rhinos performed worse in their second innings, with offspinner John Nyumbu and seamer Bradley Staddon doing most of the damage this time, sharing seven wickets between them. After being put in to bat, the Tuskers were in a strong position with a 126-run stand between Keith Dabengwa and Shafayat, an 83-run stand between Shafayat and Williams and a 78-run stand for the sixth wicket between Williams and Glen Querl, who scored an unbeaten 58.Querl followed this up with spell of 5 for 33 in 18.2 overs, as he and Ncube ran through their opponents’ line-up. Only No. 4 Steven Trenchard put up a resistance, scoring 66. Rhinos stuttered in their second innings as well, and folded for 123 on the fourth day. With the win, the Tuskers have consolidated their position at the top of the points table.

Lancashire pull off record chase

Lancashire 180 for 2 (Moore 54) beat Leicestershire 179 for 4 (Boyce 63*, Razzaq 61, Chapple 2-10) by 8 wickets
ScorecardLancashire batted nervelessly to clinch a comprehensive eight-wicket victory in a topsy-turvy Friends Life t20 clash at Old Trafford which left the reigning champions, Leicestershire, still seeking their first win.Inspired by captain Glen Chapple and opening batsman Stephen Moore, Lancashire chased down 180 to win with one over to spare to secure their second North Division win in three matches, recording their highest successful Twenty20 chase at Old Trafford in the process.Lancashire looked on course for victory as early as the sixth over when they reduced Leicestershire to 29 for 3 thanks to two wickets for the metronomic Chapple, who finished with immaculate figures of 2 for 10 from 4 overs, the most economical figures by a Lancashire bowler in Twenty20 history. But Leicestershire, now without a win in their first four matches, made a stunning recovery to post 179 for 4 thanks to some power hitting from Abdul Razzaq, Matt Boyce and Wayne White.Razzaq and Boyce shared 92 in 68 balls for the fourth wicket before Boyce and White crashed an unbroken 58 off just 21 balls for the fifth. Opener Razzaq finished with 61 off 51 balls and Boyce 63 not out off 38.However, it was still not enough as Lancashire completed the double over their visitors after Friday’s win at Grace Road.Moore top-scored with 54 off 32 balls to record his sixth score of 50 or more in eight matches in either 20 or 40-over cricket this summer. He was helped out by Tom Smith’s 42 before, with the game in the balance at 113 for 2 in the 13th over, Steven Croft and Karl Brown steered their side home in an unbroken stand of 67 in less than 7 overs on an excellent batting surface. Croft finished 41 not out off 29 balls and Brown, who hit the winning runs, finished with 39 off 23.Chapple, playing only his fifth 20-over match since the end of the 2010 season, took the new ball and had Greg Smith caught on the third-man fence by Gary Keedy and trapped Ramnaresh Sarwan lbw.

Centurion Kohli backs five-bowler strategy

Virat Kohli has supported India’s decision to play five bowlers, including Irfan Pathan, in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, saying that in batting conditions, a side needs to back its top six to come good

Abhishek Purohit in Hambantota22-Jul-2012Virat Kohli has supported India’s decision to play five bowlers, including Irfan Pathan, in the first ODI against Sri Lanka, saying that in batting conditions, a side needs to back its top six to come good. Four of the top six, including centurion Kohli, did come good today, and the bowling was led by the allrounder Irfan, who turned in decisive figures of 10-1-37-2 even as three of the other frontline bowlers went for runs.”In batting conditions, you have to bank on your six batsmen,” Kohli said. “You’ve to show faith in them and expect them to perform. You just can’t be on the safer side playing seven batsmen and compromise on a bowler because I think as a captain you need an extra option of a bowler knowing the wicket is going to be good in the second innings as well. The balance we had today was perfect and having a bowler always gives that cushion to the captain if the situation doesn’t go well.”India captain MS Dhoni too was pleased with the balance of the side in the first ODI, and said Irfan showing signs of form was a big advantage for his team. “One good positive was Irfan Pathan doing well,” Dhoni said after the match. “Without [Ravindra] Jadeja or Yuvraj [Singh], it is difficult to make the side balanced in both departments, so this was important.”The situation did go awry briefly for India when Thisara Perera and Kumar Sangakkara clawed their way back with a 78-run seventh-wicket stand in 53 deliveries after Sri Lanka had slipped to 191 for 6. The Indian innings had a similar partnership towards the finish, when Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni put on 79 off 55 to help take India past 300. Kohli said that showed how good the pitch was for batting, and praised the India bowlers for putting pressure early on the home batsmen.”Our bowlers gave us a good start with the new ball, which was swinging a bit. They bowled in good areas. When we batted we had also scored a lot of runs in the last 10 overs. The wicket was good to bat on so I would like to credit our bowlers because the way they bowled in the first phase built pressure on the opposition who lost nine wickets as well.”They are world-class players so you can’t expect to win by 80-90 runs. We had to work hard in the end and put in effort for fielding. The bowlers also had to put a lot of thought into their bowling. A phase of seven-eight overs comes in between when you concede more runs but it is important that you don’t panic, remain calm. Irfan [Pathan], Umesh [Yadav] and Zaheer [Khan] bowled three-four good overs at a crucial time due to which the match turned in our favour again.”Kohli admitted, though, that bowling at the death still remained a concern for India, especially in the subcontinent. “We are playing a lot of cricket in the subcontinent in the coming season and it is very important to hit the right areas at the death because that’s where the game can turn around. Even eight or nine runs an over can be chased in the last 10 overs. We have seen that being done before nd hopefully we can practice that more in the nets and execute our plans perfectly in the games ahead.”Dhoni agreed that India’s bowling in the end overs needed to be better. “It was a good learning experience for the younger bowlers. Zak [Zaheer] was good. [But] The death bowling for us needs to improve.”

Arthur 'would do a great job' – Marsh

The former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur would be an excellent mentor for Australia’s team if he chose to go for the job, according to the batsman Shaun Marsh

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Sep-2011The former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur would be an excellent mentor for Australia’s team if he chose to go for the job, according to the batsman Shaun Marsh. Australia are searching for a new head coach after Tim Nielsen resigned following the series win in Sri Lanka, and Arthur is considered one of the leading candidates. He was a well-respected coach of South Africa, guiding the team to an away series win over the Australians in 2008-09, before he took up his current position as coach of Western Australia. During his time with the Warriors, Arthur’s charges have included Marsh, who made an impressive start to his Test career in Sri Lanka this month.”He’s a fantastic coach. I’ve loved working with him at WA,” Marsh told AAP after returning to Perth on Wednesday. “He’s certainly helped my game out a lot and I’m sure if he put his hat in the ring, I’m sure he’d do a great job. He’s got a very good cricket brain. You can sit down and talk to him about cricket all day.”He communicates to his players very well. He’s just an all-round nice guy. He was a great international coach for South Africa. I couldn’t speak more highly of the guy. But I’m pretty sure that his main priority at the moment is WA cricket. He wants up to perform very well this summer.”Another candidate for the job is Steve Rixon, the former Australia Test wicketkeeper who is now the fielding coach in the national setup. And regardless of whether Rixon gets the job in the long-term, he should be the man to take the reins in an interim role for the upcoming tour of South Africa, according to the former Test batsman and commentator Greg Blewett.”Justin Langer is already in the system, as is Steve Rixon, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they go with Rixon,” Blewett said on . “He is a lot more experienced. He has coached New South Wales and in the UK, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets the job in the interim. If Langer gets it, he will do a great job. But I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave the job to Steve Rixon.”Australia’s squad members disbanded in Sri Lanka overnight, with some heading to the Champions League Twenty20 qualifiers in India, and others returning home. The first match on the tour of South Africa is a Twenty20 in Cape Town on October 13.ENDS
