Rangpur Division clinched their maiden National Cricket League title after they beat Dhaka Metropolis by 102 runs at the BKSP-2 ground. When Mahmudul Hasan trapped Asif Hasan leg-before to take the tenth wicket, only four minutes of play remained and that was after the umpires had taken the mandatory final hour at 3:58pm.With Khulna having moved to 120 points on the third day of the final round, the onus was on Rangpur to complete an outright win over Dhaka Metro, who were set a target of 361 runs in a minimum of 76 overs. The win moved Rangpur to 121 points.Wickets were hard to come by at the start of the second innings on the fourth morning, but Mahmudul and Suhrawadi Shuvo pegged away. Shamsur Rahman and Mehedi Maruf added 51 for the second wicket before Marshall Ayub and Mehrab Hossain jnr added 65 runs for the fourth wicket. Mahmudul picked up his fourth wicket when he had Mohammad Shahid caught and bowled in the 58th over, leaving Dhaka Metro eight down.Sharifullah, batting at No 10 due to illness, fell to Shuvo in the 65th over before Jabid Hossain and Asif resisted for 14.3 overs that almost took the title away from Rangpur’s grasp. But finally, Mahmudul struck in the 80th over.Rangpur chose to bat first in this game and scored 491 runs at a breathtaking 4.41 per over in their first innings. Litton Das made 107 while Ariful Haque slammed an unbeaten 112 off just 56 balls, with 12 sixes and six fours. He reached the century off just 54 balls. Naeem Islam made 91 while Elias Sunny picked up six wickets.Dhaka Metro made a strong reply, and were bowled out for 437 with centuries from Mehedi and Mehrab. Saikat Ali and Asif Ahmed struck fifties too, while Shuvo took five wickets.Rangpur were bowled out for 306 in their second innings, and again they scored at well over four an over, with Litton and Naeem making half-centuries.In only their fourth season in the first-class competition, Rangpur became the sixth NCL champions. Chittagong Division were the inaugural champions while Biman Bangladesh Airlines won it in the second season. Dhaka Division and Rajshahi Division have won the title five times each while Khulna, who finished just one point short of winning the title this time, have been champions three times in the past.Apart from the fight for the title, there was the battle to remain in the first tier of next season’s NCL where the teams will be split into a two-tier system depending on points table finishes from this season. Five-time champions Rajshahi Division will be one of the four teams in the second tier after they finished fifth following a 134-run loss to Dhaka Division in Fatullah.Batting first, Dhaka made 318 in the first innings with Shuvagata Hom scoring 111, his eighth first-class century. Muktar Ali took four wickets.Rajshahi were in deficit by 27 runs after they were bowled out for 291. Maisuqur Rahman, Touhid Tareq and Hamidul Islam struck fifties while Left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain took four wickets. Nadif Chowdhury’s fourth first-class century helped Dhaka take a 359-run lead on the final morning.Rajshahi were bowled out for 225 in 68.5 overs with Mosharraf taking five wickets in the second innings, in addition to Jubair Hossain’s three-wicket haul. Dhaka, who were champions in the 2013-14 season, finished third with 119 points, just two short of this year’s winners.Sylhet Division picked up their first win of the competition when they beat Barisal Division by ten wickets at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Barisal and Chittagong ended the campaign without any wins.Ahmed Sadiqur’s four-wicket haul on the first day put Barisal in the back foot and they were bowled out for 167 in 65.2 overs. Shahriar Nafees made 90 but there were only two other double-figure scores in the entire innings.Sylhet replied with 486 for nine and only declared their first innings on the third afternoon. The highly experienced Rajin Saleh scored his maiden double hundred in his 124th first-class match, an innings that spanned 446 minutes and contained 20 fours and three sixes. Shanaj Ahmed, Ruman Ahmed, Alok Kapali and Enamul Haque jnr also scored fifties. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed took four wickets.Barisal, trailing by 319, were bowled out for 390. There were fifties for Nafees, Shahin Hossain, Fazle Rabbi and Mosaddek Hossain but two wickets each from Sadiqur, Enamul, Rahatul Ferdous and Kapali kept Sylhet in a dominant position. They knocked off the second innings target in 13.4 overs with Rajin adjudged man of the match.

Kohli uses chance to shepherd young players

On Sunday, in Ranchi, between the 34th and 44th overs India lost four wickets, going from 180 for 3 to 231 for 7 in a chase of 287. At that point they needed 54 off 36, with just those three wickets remaining. An inexperienced batsman might have panicked, and the cause would have been lost. But India had stand-in captain Virat Kohli at the crease, he was well set, and he came with knowledge of how to finish a chase. And finish it he did, with a brilliantly-timed, unbeaten 139, which helped India sweep the series 5-0.That, Kohli said after match, was why he batted at No. 4 all through the series instead of his usual No. 3. “You need someone who has batted in such situations and knows what needs to be done,” Kohli told the BCCI site. “I knew what I had to do at that time, which was stay calm, knock the ball around for singles.Virat Kohli: ‘The more the young guys see this kind of performances, and know that the intent and aggression is coming from the top, they would want to follow’•BCCI

“Later on [in the chase] it is all about what your instincts tell you to do. Even with seven down I went after [Ajantha] Mendis because … I knew that had to be the over to hit out. These are the decisions you learn to make with experience of playing a lot of games. I am glad I was out there well set, otherwise it was a difficult situation.”Mendis had had the better of several of India’s middle-order batsmen had taken 4 for 46 in eight before Kohli hit a six and a four off consecutive balls off him in the 46th over. India took 13 runs off the next over, bowled by Eranga, and the equation was down to a very manageable 21 off 18.However, Kohli said, he might not keep batting at four once India’s middle order was back to full strength – they were without their premier finisher, MS Dhoni, in this series. “As long as we are strengthened in the middle order, I don’t see any reason to keep batting at four,” he said. “I have scored most of my centuries and won most of the games for the team at No. 3.”As long as I can play in the same way I did today batting at three as well, I don’t mind batting at either position because I am comfortable at both. Whatever my gut-feel tells me and what the team requires off me will decide my batting position. But I am sort of learning to bat at other positions as well.”Kohli said he was happy that he could show his less-experienced team-mates the way, since he had been demanding ruthlessness off them right from the start of the series. “From the first match I have spoken about creating a culture of ruthlessness and winning habit in the team, and it has come off beautifully,” he said. “If I ask the guys to be ruthless while being lazy myself, I’ll look stupid at the end of the day. Especially in a young team, the guys who are experienced have to lead the way. In a team, negativity can spread really quickly. You see two heads falling and six more will fall.”The more the young guys see this kind of performances, and know that the intent and aggression is coming from the top, they would want to follow. So, I, as the captain of the team, need to be at that intensity level first before asking anyone else to be there. It’s a conscious effort I have to make, and it’s not that hard for me because I have always played my cricket like that.”

Mithun, Taskin picked for India ODIs

Bangladesh have included uncapped players Mohammad Mithun and Taskin Ahmed in the 15-man squad for the three ODIs at home against India

Mohammad Isam05-Jun-2014

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has made the ODI squad•BCB

Uncapped players Taskin Ahmed and Mithun Ali have been called up to Bangladesh’s 15-man squad for the three-ODI series against India in June. There was no room for medium-pacer Rubel Hossain as the selectors also picked Ziaur Rahman for his seam-bowling allrounder skills. From Bangladesh’s previous ODI campaign – the Asia Cup this year – Imrul Kayes, Arafat Sunny, Naeem Islam and Shafiul Islam missed out, while Tamim Iqbal returned to the squad after missing the five-nation tournament due to a neck injury.Taskin, 19, is recognised as one of the quickest bowlers in Bangladesh. He recently recovered from a knee injury that sidelined him for nearly a year after the BPL in 2013. A few weeks after full recovery, Taskin made his international debut against Australia in the World T20. He was always earmarked by BCB coaches and was a regular in the Bangladesh nets from January this year, gradually revving up his pace.Wicketkeeper-batsman Mithun was the sixth highest scorer – 706 runs – in first-class cricket this season, including two centuries. He made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka in February this year.Chief selector Faruque Ahmed said Mithun and Taskin had been picked to gauge the depth of the team’s bench strength ahead of the 2015 World Cup. “We have kept more or less a settled squad but it is also important to get an idea about the kind of back up we have in our hands as we start preparing for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand,” Faruque said. “Mithun [Ali] has been under our radar for a while. He has performed consistently in the limited overs format and in the longer version as well during the last couple of years and deserves a chance at international level.”Taskin [Ahmed] is an exciting prospect and has already played a Twenty20 international. We thought it was a good opportunity to see how he performs in the 50-over game in home conditions against some quality batsmen.”Faruque said due to the number of pace options, and to balance the squad, they had to omit Rubel. He expressed confidence in Al-Amin Hossain and also felt Mahmudullah would be useful as a bowler, but did not make a mention of his poor batting form.”Al Amin has bowled impressively since his debut and Mashrafe Mortaza is our most experienced campaigner. We also have a seam-bowling all-rounder in Ziaur Rahman. Because of these pace options and squad balance Rubel Hossain misses out. The spin department is well covered with Abdur Razzak, Shakib Al Hasan and Sohag Gazi. Mahmudullah is also quite handy and can do a job for his captain.”Rubel was Bangladesh’s highest ODI wicket-taker in the 2013-14 season, but his expensive spells this year probably cost him a place. Out of six ODIs in 2014, Rubel gave away more than 60 on four occasions, but found a way to pick up wickets. Bangladesh are without their top two wicket-takers of the year – Rubel and Sunny – for the series against India.Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mithun Ali, Abdur Razzak, Masrafe Mortaza, Shohag Gazi, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed.

Philander is fastest SA bowler to 100 Test wickets

Vernon Philander became the fastest South African to 100 Test wickets, at the Wanderers on Friday, when he had Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan caught at second slip

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg20-Dec-2013Vernon Philander became the fastest South African to 100 Test wickets, at the Wanderers on Friday, when he had Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan caught at second slip. Jacques Kallis, stationed in the cordon, collected the catch to ensure Philander reached the landmark in his 19th Test, one quicker than his new-ball partner Dale Steyn. He accounted for Dhawan in typical Philander fashion, getting the batsman to push at a short of a length ball outside offstump, and then celebrated the feat with a tailor-made salute to the dressing-room. First he held up both index fingers and then cupped his hands into a circle twice. He was signaling the number of batsmen he has sent on their way.Speaking after the day’s play, Philander said he hoped to keep his form going for his team. “I was reminded a few times of how close I was [to the landmark], like recently in the UAE. But to me, today was just another game,” he said. “Hopefully I can grab a few more sticks in the future for South Africa.”Philander lies joint-sixth on the all-time list of fastest to 100 wickets, behind George Lohmann, who brought up the landmark in 16 Tests, Charlie Turner, Sydney Barnes and Clarrie Grimmet, who did it in 17 Tests, and R Ashwin, who managed it in 18. Philander was also the joint second-fastest to 50 wickets, having achieved that in just seven Tests.Vernon Philander was the joint-sixth fastest to 100 overall•AFP”It’s a very important milestone. He has proved he can be successful in all conditions. Now he does not have to prove anything; he has that self-belief,” Makhaya Ntini, the former South Africa quick, told ESPNcricinfo.Apart from his bowling landmark, Philander also scored his third Test half-century in this match, rescuing his tottering side and helping lift them to within 50 of India’s first-innings total. All three of his fifties – the other two being against England at Lord’s and against Pakistan in Centurion – have come when his team was in a tough spot. Philander said he consciously works on his batting. “I spend a lot of time of my batting. I take great pride in it I enjoy those moments when the pressure is up.”Philander made his Test debut in Cape Town in November 2011 against Australia – the first Test South Africa played under Gary Kirsten’s tenure. His took his first wicket in his third over, squaring Phil Hughes up to induce the edge and give Mark Boucher his 500th Test catch. In that match, Philander finished with eight wickets, including the first of his nine five-wicket hauls. A second five-for in Johannesburg in the following match saw him named Man of the Series in his first outing as a Test cricketer. He followed up with the first of two ten-wicket hauls, against Sri Lanka, in Centurion. His other ten-for came in Hamilton the following March, where Doug Bracewell became his 50th wicket. At that stage, Philander had only played in South Africa and New Zealand, and some expected things to get much tougher for him in other conditions. In his first two Tests in England, it seemed they had a point. He took just five wickets before surging to seven at Lord’s, including a match-winning five-for in the second innings. With that series win, South Africa became the No. 1 ranked team in the world.Overall, Philander’s record is only slightly less impressive on the road than it is at home. Forty-three of his 100 wickets have come in New Zealand, England, Australia and the UAE at an average of 22.00, while the remaining 57 were picked up in South Africa at a touch over 14. His most successful hunting ground is his home venue, Newlands, where he has 30 wickets at an average of just 12.00.”What’s made Vernon so successful is that he is consistent. He bowls good areas all the time, he hardly delivers a bad ball and he moves it just enough. If he keeps going like this he will be at 150 in no time but the real pressure will be for him to get to 390,” Ntini, whose Test career ended with him 10 short of 400 wickets, joked. The fastest to 150 wickets in Barnes in 24 Tests, which means Philander will have to take 10 a match to beat that. That may be a tough ask but Philander has already surprised many. When his Test career began, Philander had the lowest average of all active bowlers on the South African first-class circuit but plenty of doubters who believed he was not quick enough and did not do enough with the ball to make an impact. Nineteen Tests later, not many of them will have that opinion anymore.

A terceira consecutiva.

PARANDO FABULOSO

A CONSAGRAÇÃO INTERNACIONAL

CLUBES BRASILEIROS QUEREM JORGE

REFORÇOS NO CRUZEIRO?

INDEPENDIENTE CONFIRMA PÉREZ, ALVO DO SANTOS

Lance Klusener, the former South Africa allrounder, has been appointed coach of the Dolphins franchise. He will begin working with the team on July 16, on a two-year contract.Klusener, 40, had worked with the Dolphins on an interim basis after Graham Ford resigned earlier this year. He said he was pleased to be working with his old franchise. “Being a former Dolphin, I am very proud of my team and want to be part of the process of rebuilding the team to its rightful place as South Africa’s No. 1 franchise.”Klusener has level 3 coaching certification from Cricket South Africa, and has worked at the country’s high performance centre and with IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians. The shortlist of candidates for the job was brought down to two names, Klusener and former Cobras coach Shukri Conrad, before Klusener was chosen. Reportedly, while the panel selecting the coach was split initially over Klusener’s appointment, he was the Dolphins players’ clear first choice for the job all through. The Dolphins have not come close to challenging for a trophy for the last four seasons, since qualifying for what would have been the inaugural Champions League T20 in 2008 – the tournament was cancelled due to the terror attacks in Mumbai in November that year. They had won only one game in ten this season in first-class cricket, finishing bottom of the table in the SuperSport Series, and did not make the knockouts in the domestic one-day tournament.Fa-eez Jaffar, the chairman KwaZulu-Natal Cricket, said Klusener’s main task would be to reintroduce a winning culture into the franchise set-up. “Lance has been a Dolphins man all his life. It will be good to see him working with and bringing out the best in our senior players, and guiding and mentoring our young emerging players.”One of his first tasks would be to reintroduce the culture of winning and playing with passion and pride wearing the Dolphins badge. This has been missing for some time. Players must want to play for the Dolphins.”
