NUFC: Crook drops claim on defensive target

A key update has emerged regarding Newcastle United’s transfer plans for Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile…

What’s the talk?

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has revealed that the Magpies want to bring the French centre-back to the club as their next signing.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think the other player they’d like to sign now is Benoit Badiashile from Monaco although he’s currently injured.”

This comes after Sky Sports reported that the player is interested in making the move to St James’ Park before the end of the month.

Excitement for Eddie Howe

This claim will surely leave Howe excited, as it suggests that he could have a new centre-back to work with in the coming weeks. The club have seemingly identified that position as an area in which they would like to strengthen, and the head coach will be buzzing with the prospect of an added option to his defence.

Newcastle are not blessed with an abundance of defensive quality in their ranks, which has been highlighted by their form this season. Only Norwich, who have played a game more, have conceded more goals than the Magpies in the top flight, which shows how poorly their defence has performed this term.

They have let in 2.1 goals per game and kept just one clean sheet in the process, which has played a part in their failure to pick up more than one league win five months into the season. The draw with Watford at the weekend was the perfect example, with a lapse piece of defending allowing Joao Pedro to score with a header after beating Jamaal Lascelles in the air, depriving the Magpies of a priceless victory.

This is why Howe will be excited by the thought of a new defender coming in, particularly such a talented young prospect in Badiashile. Last season, he averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.91 in Ligue 1 as he played 35 matches despite only turning 20 throughout the campaign.

The youngster averaged 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game and won 63% of his duels, showcasing his capability to perform at the top level despite his tender age. The ex-Cherries coach will surely be buzzing at the possibility of working with such a fine prospect in the second half of the campaign, and that is why the club’s intention to swoop in for the Frenchman is an exciting one for the manager.

Is this Spurs’ strongest XI after January?

Tottenham Hotspur made some ruthless decisions during the January transfer window as the club looks to transform Antonio Conte’s playing squad.

The north London outfit sit just two points outside of the top four with two games in hand on Manchester United and having lost just one league game under the Italian, there’s every chance of the team battling for a place in the Champions League ahead of next term.

Spurs announced the arrivals of Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski in a double swoop from sporting director Fabio Paratici’s former club, Juventus, on deadline day.

Whilst no fewer than four players saw an exit, with Tanguy Ndombele, Bryan Gil and Giovani Lo Celso departing on loan and Dele Alli ending a seven-year stint in N17 after he signed for Everton permanently.

So what is left of Conte’s squad and exactly what is his strongest lineup heading into the second half of the season? Here’s how Spurs could look with their new additions, starting with an FA Cup clash against Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend.

Both Bentancur and Kulusevski are likely to be part of Conte’s starting XI going forward. It would be foolish to not involve them after bolstering the squad as demanded.

They could slot right in, meaning academy graduate Oliver Skipp is likely to make way with the Uruguay international becoming Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s new partner. The Dane has played more minutes than the Spurs youngster, so Conte surely favours him more.

Meanwhile, the Swedish attacker is a ‘plug and play’ option in the final third, meaning he could be deployed anywhere, though it seems likely that he’s going to feature alongside Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, so that leaves the £18m-rated Lucas Moura – who was once dubbed a “nightmare” to train against by Eric Dier – the unlucky man to make way.

Speaking of which, the English centre-back should play with Ben Davies and Cristian Romero, once he returns from injury. That back three should sit in front of club captain Hugo Lloris, who signed a two-year contract extension during January.

Matt Doherty could even get the nod over Emerson Royal on the right flank. Conte sought a new addition in this role due to his lack of faith in the pair but evidently, it was to no avail. If the Italian wants a more attacking option, then the Irishman has a slight edge over the summer signing.

Meanwhile, Sergio Reguilon should remain on the other side with Ryan Sessegnon as a key backup.

Players like Harry Winks, Davinson Sanchez and Steven Bergwijn will all play their part, especially the latter, who could be seen as an alternative to Kane up top.

Reforço do Palmeiras, Diogo Barbosa veste verde e visita a Academia

Pakistan prevail in thrilling climax

A washout would have ensured them a place in the semi-finals but Pakistan proved they were capable of progressing to the next stage based on performance alone

The Bulletin by Siddhartha Talya23-Jan-2010Pakistan 117 for 8 (Ahsan 30, Aziz 28, Azam 17*, Unadkat 2-26) beat India 114 for 9 (Mandeep 40, Fayyaz 4-27) by two wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Pakistan celebrate a thrilling win over India•International Cricket Council

Pakistan and India livened up a contest that, at one stage, was in danger of ending in a washout. A combination of quality seam bowling from Fayyaz Butt and enterprising batting by Hammad Azam sealed a thrilling two-wicket win in the final over in front of a sparse yet boisterous crowd at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, knocking the defending champions out of the Under-19 World Cup and setting up a semi-final clash with West Indies on Monday.Pakistan were favourites after they had bowled out India for 114 but the early shock in their chase, when they lost three wickets for 16, immediately sparked comparisons to the World Cup final between the teams in 2006. Pakistan had emerged victors then, defending a paltry 109, courtesy Anwar Ali, whose prodigious swing toppled an overconfident India. Sandeep Sharma looked good to return the favour this time with his movement, beating the top-order batsmen consistently before bowling opener Babar Azam with a big inswinger. The effect rubbed off on his bowling partners, Saurabh Netravalkar and Jaidev Unadkat, who accounted for Ahmed Shehzad and captain Aseem Ghumman by squaring them up.On a big ground and a slow outfield, boundaries were elusive and Ahsan Ali and Rameez Aziz set about stabilising the creeping run-rate by way of piercing the field. There were intermittent hits to the fence, including a clean strike over long-on by Aziz. But the preoccupation with singles and twos led to a moment of indecision and resulted in Ahsan’s run out, ending a 55-run stand. Aziz holed out the next over, swinging the game towards India but bringing the eventual match-winner Hammad to the crease.India’s surge at the close of their innings was a belated one while Pakistan’s, despite the frequent loss of wickets, was helped by a couple of timely bursts from Hammad’s partners. With 24 needed off 17, Mohammad Waqas smashed Ashok Menaria over midwicket for six and fell the next ball. With 16 needed off 12, Usman Qadir skied Unadkat for a couple and followed up with a boundary over extra cover to bring the equation to a run-a-ball, but fell the next delivery.Amid the swinging fortunes, Hammad held firm. He hit Sharma for a six over midwicket and scooped Unadkat over short fine leg to leave Pakistan needing just four in the final over. There was a moment of trepidation when his partner Sarmad Bhatti fell to the second ball of the final over. The batsmen, however, had crossed and Hammad finished the chase by cutting Sharma through point to crush Indian hopes. The Indian innings needed a repair job from Mandeep Singh, who stroked 40, to put up a score that almost proved adequate. But Fayyaz had justified Azeem Ghumman’s decision to bowl by nipping out the Indian openers in the first over, and returned in the end to take two more.

Spurs handed Dusan Vlahovic transfer boost

As per 90min, Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League suitors have been gifted a ‘huge advantage’ in the race to sign Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move…

It is well-known that Spurs’ managing director Fabio Paratici has his eye on the 21-year-old ahead of January, coming after a move failed to materialise in the last transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham had Vlahovic in their sights at one point over the summer amid their search for a Harry Kane alternative (The Telegraph) and it appears their interest has far from waned.

Antonio Conte’s arrival has only heightened reports of a possible move to Spurs given his pull in Serie A, with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) even claiming that a meeting was recently held.

The Latest: Spurs gifted ‘huge advantage’…

As per 90min, Tottenham and other interested Premier League clubs have just been handed a boost in the race for Vlahovic. Indeed, according to their information, La Viola president Rocco Commisso would ‘ideally rather sell to England’ given their bad blood with Juventus over the transfer of Federico Chiesa.

This could gift Tottenham, as well as the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle, a ‘huge advantage’ as they keep watch of the 21-year-old.

Furthermore, 90min claimed that Vlahovic’s agents were in England ‘this month’ for talks and to assure interested parties that the Serbian had not agreed a move to Turin.

The Verdict: Get it d0ne…

As the Premier League race heats up with many clubs interested, we believe that signing Vlahovic should come as a real priority got Spurs given their lack of a senior alternative striking option to Kane.

The Serbia international has been a revelation this season, following on from his hugely impressive 21-goal Serie A haul over 2020/21. Bagging 12 goals and three assists in all competitions so far already, Vlahovic’s form is only matched by his plaudits.

Valeri Bojinov, a former Bulgaria international and one-time Manchester City striker, called the youngster ‘crazy’ and lifted the lid on his self-comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Indeed, Vlahovic could have the panache and quality desperately needed for Conte’s new-look Tottenham team.

Wolves fans slam Traore vs Burnley

Many Wolves fans have been slamming the performance of Adama Traore in their 0-0 draw at home to Burnley in the Premier League tonight.

It was a frustrating night for the Spaniard, who showed moments of brilliance at times when dribbling through the Clarets’ defence, but his end product often let him down.

Traore failed to score with all four of his goal attempts, while he was also inaccurate with five of his crosses, and lost the ball on no fewer than 17 occasions in total (SofaScore).

The winger also lost out on six of his duels and misplaced six of his passes (SofaScore) as the Molineux faithful grew more tiresome with him as the game went on.

He could not make the difference in the final third of the pitch as Bruno Lage’s team had to settle for just a point in the end.

These Wolves supporters slammed his performance on Twitter, with one fan going as far as to claim that Traore was a ‘liability’ tonight:

Newcastle transfer news on Vlahovic

Newcastle United are reportedly now eyeing up a move to sign emerging superstar Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Vlahovic on the rise

Not many football fans may have heard of Vlahovic a year or two ago, but he is really starting to emerge as a rising superstar in Serie A.

Italian media have described him as a ‘force of nature’ and have likened him to established goal machines Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku (Football Italia), and it is hard not to see why.

The Serbia international is a monster at six-foot-two-inches tall, and has already hit the 10-goal mark this season, adding to the impressive 21 that he managed in the Serie A last term (Transfermarkt).

His record for his country is no different, with six strikes in 12 games so far.

The Latest: Newcastle interest

As per Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), St. James’ Park could be Vlahovic’s destination next campaign.

They have been described as being ‘submersed in Saudi dollars’, and having the ‘economic power’ to join in any auction for the Fiorentina star.

Vlahovic is seen as a ‘suitable target’ for the North East club, but they face competition from both Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus for his signature.

His deal expires in 2023, and so Fiorentina are expected to sell him for a transfer fee of between €50-60m (£42.8-51.4m).

The Verdict: Realistic?

With Fiorentina currently sitting in seventh spot in the Serie A, they are at risk of missing out on European football for next season, meaning that Vlahovic may not have too much motivation to stay.

Of course, the Tyneside outfit would need to ensure that they are not relegated first, but a move to the Premier League may appeal to him.

His goal record speaks for itself, and players like Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson would surely love to play with someone of his quality.

Plus, he is still just 21 years of age, and so even if a move to the Magpies does not work out for him, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium can always look to sell him on after.

We don't have the experience to win – Dyson

John Dyson, the West Indies coach, has said his team played well against Bangladesh but lacked the experience to push for wins. West Indies lost the Test series 2-0 and are also down 2-0 in the one-day series, looking to avoid a series whitewash when they play the third ODI in St Kitts.”I’d like to have a win and I’m sure the boys would as well,” Dyson said. “I think they’ve actually played some good cricket over the series but we just did not have the experience to get a win.””Bangladesh batted well. I think we saw our inexperience come through in Dominica.” West Indies had scored 274 but Bangladesh chased it down with three wickets in hand and an over to spare. “When you have a group of guys who have only played a handful of games between them, it’s a real pressure cooker in 50-over and Twenty20 cricket,” Dyson said.Dyson said Bangladesh had played very well over the series and it wasn’t fair to say they had got success only because they were playing a weaker team. “Everyone seems to ignore the fact that they have played good cricket. They aren’t as weak as some people seem to think they are.”West Indies were delivered a scare in the second ODI when Darren Sammy picked up a groin injury but Dyson was confident he would be fit for the final game. “He [Sammy] bowled today [in the nets], he had two spells and he showed no signs of any problems from that. He’s batted extremely well in the nets, so at the moment he’s showing no signs of any problems at all. I expect him to be 100% fit.”
