Fleming picks up more captaincy milestones

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming achieved another captaincy career milestone with the series victory over the West Indies today when becoming this country’s most successful Test captain away from home

Lynn McConnell03-Jul-2002New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming achieved another captaincy career milestone with the series victory over the West Indies today when becoming this country’s most successful Test captain away from home.It was only New Zealand’s eighth series victory, from 52 attempts, away from New Zealand’s shores, and Fleming has achieved three of them.He led New Zealand to victory in England in 1999, Zimbabwe in 2000/01 and now the West Indies.Jeremy Coney won two series away from home in Australia (1985/85) and England (1986). Graham Dowling (Pakistan, 1969/70), Geoff Howarth (Sri Lanka, 1983/84) and Martin Crowe (Zimbabwe, 1992/93) were the other away-winning captains.Only India and South Africa remain on the countries in which New Zealand has not won a series, although both countries have featured in drawn series on their home soil with New Zealand. The sequence of away victories, and the attempts to win the first series, is: Pakistan (1969/70- third attempt), Sri Lanka (1983/84 – first), Australia (1985/86 – third), England (1986 – 10th), Zimbabwe (1992/93 – first), West Indies (2001/02 – fourth).Scott Styris’ achievement of a century and a half-century on debut had previously been achieved by just two other New Zealand batsmen, Rodney Redmond against Pakistan in 1972/73 and Lou Vincent in December last year in Australia.Styris’ tally of 176 runs for the match was the second highest by a New Zealand batsman on debut after Mathew Sinclair’s 214, also against the West Indies in 1999/00.The West Indies failed to win a Test match in a home series for the first time in 27 series and in their Test history had only failed to win a Test in a series on seven occasions. They have now been denied twice by New Zealand, along with two times by Australia and England and once by India.Mark Richardson may have found a new ally at the top of the order in Vincent. In eight opening partnerships, Richardson and Vincent have scored 318 runs at an average of 39.75. They shared stands of 61 and 117 in Grenada, the second innings effort surpassing their previous best partnership of 77 scored in the second innings against Australia at last year Perth, the first match they batted together. In all the occasions they have batted together they have scored 563 runs at 43.40, with their highest being 119 for the second wicket against England in the second Test at Wellington this year. This goes some way towards matching the formidable partnership formed by Richardson and Matthew Bell last season. They scored 524 runs in eight innings together at an average of 65.50 before Bell was dropped in favour of Vincent for the Perth Test.

Is this Wolves’ new Goncalves?

Back in 2019, Fosun and Nuno Espirito Santo made arguably one of the strangest decisions during their time at Wolves.

When it comes to recruiting and selling, the Old Gold have often got it spot-on. Think Raul Jimenez, Pedro Neto or Diogo Jota for instance.

However, in the case of Pedro Goncalves, puzzling circumstances arise.

The creative dynamo made just one substitute appearance for Wolves in the Carabao Cup before he hopped on a plane and headed to Famalicao. What followed was a move to Sporting Lisbon, where he has quickly become one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe.

Goncalves found the net on 23 occasions in 37 matches last season, the result of which was mega-money links away from Portugal.

It’s safe to say that Wolves will regret their decision to let him move on two years ago. However, they could make up for that error and sign a like-minded player this summer.

That happens to be someone with Sporting connections himself – Matheus Pereira.

Brazilian-born, it’s those Portuguese links which Kevin Phillips suggested earlier this year could see Wolves make a move after West Brom’s relegation.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-ceballos-zinchenko-euros-felix-lage” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

If they do try and land the Baggies magician, it would be an awe-inspiring acquisition. Like Goncalves, he has the ability to score goals on a regular basis but also assist with great frequency.

Last season, Pereira beat the goalkeeper 12 times and set up his teammates to score on six occasions.

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise to hear that the 25-year-old has been described as “silky” by watching pundits.

The West Brom star has the ability to play out wide and in more central areas, which is another comparable trait to Goncalves.

He picks up little pockets of space and can change the course of a game in an instant. Pereira jinks past players with ease and has quite wonderful vision, while is finishing isn’t bad either.

During West Brom’s promotion-winning campaign from the Championship in 2019/20, only Kevin De Bruyne (20) provided more assists than Pereira (16) in England’s top four leagues.

Goncalves is the definition of one who got away for the Old Gold, but Bruno Lage can stop that sense of regret by signing a new star in the same mould.

With 20 goals in just two season at The Hawthorns, Pereira undoubtedly fits the bill.

AND in other news, Lage could discover his Ruben Neves heir if Wolves unleash rarely-seen “goal threat”…

Celtic: Ryan Christie linked with Leicester

Ryan Christie has been linked with a move to English FA Cup winners Leicester City, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Celtic face an exodus ahead of 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, Celtic could lose multiple first team regulars as they look to mount a Premiership title bid to dethrone their Glasgow rivals at the first attempt.

Odsonne Edouard has been subject of a transfer wrangle this summer as the Foxes vie to secure his services amid further interest from West Ham United and Aston Villa in recent weeks.

However, there may be someone else leaving Parkhead to link up with former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at the King Power Stadium following latest developments.

The Latest: Rodgers eyeing Christie reunion; Ligue 1 duo also keen

Leicester City are said to be interested in a swoop for Christie in this window as rumours surrounding his future intensify [Daily Mail].

Nice and Monaco are also rumoured to be keen on obtaining his signature, as his contract is due to expire mid-season next January [Daily Record].

The Scotland international’s unusual contractual circumstances make him an attractive option for prospective bidders. Reported to be available for just £1m, Celtic are looking to sell him on for any sort of fee rather than lose him for nothing in 2022 [Sunday Post].

The Verdict: Losing Christie for a knockdown fee would be bitterly disappointing

Losing the Inverness-born midfielder for such a small sum would undoubtedly come as a bitter blow to Celtic. Nice had an £8m offer knocked back for Christie in January, demonstrating a lack of awareness from the Parkhead hierarchy regarding his diminishing value.

In 2020/21, the 26-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign for the Celts, registering 22 goal contributions from 46 games with seven goals and 15 assists [Transfermarkt]. He also made the WhoScored? Scottish Premiership Team of the Season last term, averaging a score of 7.33/10 across the campaign [67 Hail Hail].

Whether he eventually reunites with his former boss Rodgers or tries his luck abroad in the sunnier climes of Ligue 1 in France, he would offer a substantial attacking threat, as illustrated by his returns from last season.

Once labelled as “absolutely brilliant” by former Hoops manager Neil Lennon [Daily Record], there is no reason why Christie cannot take his game to the next level if he moves on to pastures new.

In other news, Celtic have been linked with a Brazilian centre-back.

Villa interested in Chelsea starlet Tino Livramento

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is interested in signing Chelsea starlet Valentino Livramento this summer.

What’s the story?

Having already completed the signing of Emi Buendia, Villa appear to have swiftly turned their attentions elsewhere as they look to strengthen Smith’s squad.

And, according to Goal, the Midlands club are eyeing up a move for 18-year-old right-back Livramento this summer, and that while Serie A giants Milan have got in touch, “Villa are among clubs that seem more viable options for the young full-back”.

The report further claims that the versatile teenager’s future at Stamford Bridge could be in doubt if the Blues land Achraf Hakimi from Borussia Dortmund.

Fans will love it

At just 18, Livramento would join the array of exciting young talents already at Villa, with the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Louie Barry in particular surely hoping to make a big impression on the first-team next season.

The Midlands club were, of course, the winners of the FA Youth Cup at the back end of last season, and that’s a real testament to the outstanding work Villa have been doing at academy level.

And in the 5 foot 8 Livramento, they would be getting another superb young addition.

Dubbed as a “huge talent”, the England youth international has even captained the Young Lions, playing through the U16s all the way to the U19s.

A profile piece done by Chelsea’s official website, said: “Tino Livramento is a defender who plays predominantly at right-back or right wing-back, from where he likes to get forward and attack.

“2020/21 saw Livramento become regular for the development squad, and while still available for our youth team, by January he had contributed eight assists and two goals in 14 Academy outings from various positions on his favoured right side of the pitch.”

And, despite his age, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was particularly effusive in his praise of the 18-year-old.

He said: “I love the academy boys. We have Anjorin and Livramento regularly joining training. The academy has outstanding quality. Every club who has young guys constantly coming in making it, it creates a bond in the club and supporters.”

While signings for the here and now – like Buendia for example – are absolutely key to Villa’s chances of succeeding next season in the Premier League, making sure the academy is in good hands too is paramount.

It’s exactly why Villa fans should be buzzing at the prospect of Johan Lange going after a rising star from the reigning Champions League holders.

Meanwhile, Villa are interested in signing this Premier League star…

Leeds given chance to sign Eddie Nketiah

Arsenal are reportedly offering Eddie Nketiah to Leeds United this summer, with £20m enough to prise him away from the Emirates Stadium.

The Lowdown: Attacking reinforcements needed

The Whites excelled in the Premier League last season as they finished ninth, but there did seem to be too much onus on Patrick Bamford scoring the goals.

That’s not to say that the Englishman single-handedly carried Leeds’ attack, but he was the only player to reach double figures in the league.

Marcelo Bielsa may believe that a deputy to Bamford is required this summer, and Nketiah could potentially be that man.

The Latest: Leeds offered chance to sign Nketiah

According to Football Insider, Arsenal are happy to let the young striker return to Elland Road, having enjoyed a spell on loan there in 2019/20.

Nketiah is out of contract with the Gunners in 2022, so now is the time for them to receive a hefty sum for the 22-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-copy/” title=”Latest Leeds United news! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth the money?

While Nketiah may not yet be the finished article, he is a young player with undoubted pedigree, leading the all-time scoring charts for England’s under-21s.

At 22, he has time on his side and could develop brilliantly under Bielsa, playing second fiddle to Bamford but proving to be a handy squad option.

Granted, £20m is a lot of money so there would be an element of risk, but Nketiah is an adept goalscorer who could have a bright future, while he already has ample Premier League experience under his belt and therefore should not need any great adjusting period if he moves to Elland Road.

In other news, Leeds have been handed a boost in their quest to sign one player this summer. Find out who it is here.

Wolves fans on Vitinha transfer update

Some Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Vitinha.

As cited by Record, Fernando Gomes, who is an administrator at FC Porto, has confirmed that the attacking midfield player will not be returning to the club, and that he would be sold to the Wanderers on a permanent deal if they stayed up in the Premier League, which they have done.

At 21 years of age, Vitinha still has a lot of promise, and has been a bright spark at times in what has been a pretty dull season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

The Portuguese ace has the highest pass success percentage (90.4%) out of any of his teammates to have played 10 or more games in the top flight so far this season, which is impressive considering the way he plays on the front foot. (Whoscored).

Nonetheless, with Nuno’s squad looking fairly thin, it would be a wise move to take Vitinha back next campaign, and fans won’t be forgetting his wonder-goal against Chorley any time soon.

McAvennie discusses Gers’ McKee

Frank McAvennie believes Chris McKee could leave Glasgow Rangers after being sent off for using foul and abusive language while on loan at Brechin City.

The Lowdown: McKee accused of abuse

McKee moved on loan to Scottish League Two side Brechin in January, making 14 appearances in all competitions for the club (Transfermarkt).

Earlier this month, he started for Brechin in the play-off final against Kelty Hearts, who eventually prevailed. McKee, though, failed to last the whole 90 minutes, with him instead being sent off during the first half following an alleged homophobic outburst.

The Latest: McAvennie thinks he could depart

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie suggested it could be the end of the road for the 19-year-old at Ibrox. He said:

“A lot of people fling crap at Rangers.

“Nothing has been confirmed or reported yet. He’s not been charged by the SFA.

“It could stick with him for his career. Mud sticks. It takes a while to shake something like that off.

“He’s a young boy and if he’s guilty he needs to be educated. Things get said on the football pitch but some things just don’t belong on there.

“Things are sometimes said in the heat of the moment, I’m not justifying what he may have said.

“We have to see what happens but if he’s guilty, they could terminate his deal. They face a really tough decision on keeping him.”

   The Verdict: Difficult decision

As McAvennie says, if McKee is found guilty, Rangers face a difficult decision in regards to whether they should keep him at the club. In recent months, there has been a significant desire to push back against all forms of abuse, and the Gers themselves have been involved in one unsavoury incident when Glen Kamara was racially abused by Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela.

Whether McKee, who Noel Whelan previously said was “worth his weight in gold” (Football Insider), has a promising future ahead of him is irrelevant.

At just 19 years of age, McKee is still a boy – we must ask whether he should really be tarred for the rest of his career because of one very poor choice of words. Some kind of punishment must be given, of that there is no doubt, but losing his contract may feel extremely harsh.

In other news, Rangers fans are livid at this journalist’s tweets.
