City set to avoid Laporte sale

A major update has emerged about Spanish international Aymeric Laporte, regarding his future at Manchester City.

What’s the talk?

According to AS, Manchester City are not prepared to cash in on Aymeric Laporte this summer. The report claims that Pep Guardiola wants to keep Laporte at the club to compete with Ruben Dias and John Stones for a place in his starting XI.

Earlier this month, Spanish outlet Sport reported that City and Barcelona were in talks over a potential deal for Laporte. Barcelona were said to be keen on bringing Laporte back to Spain and City were seemingly open to working out a solution.

Back in January, City boss Guardiola claimed Laporte has “special quality” with the ball at his feet, but admitted that it is down to his preparation and attitude in regards to whether he plays or not. He told The Guardian:

“It depends on him, the quality is there.

“[He has to] be in top form and have his mind open. He’s the best left-sided defender [we have], he has special quality with the ball. He has to be focused to come back in the best condition possible and he will get his minutes. After, it depends on his performance like it depends on the form of everyone.”

Fans will be buzzing

Manchester City fans will be buzzing with this news as it means that the club will avoid making a major error this summer. It was only two years ago that Laporte was named in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances at centre-back and it was only a couple of months ago that Laporte was scoring the winner in the League Cup final for City against Tottenham at Wembley. He has proven his quality throughout his time in England and it would have been a mistake for the club to sell him to Barcelona.

In 75 Premier League appearances for Manchester City, Laporte has only been on the losing side eight times. City only conceded 41 times and kept 32 clean sheets in those 75 games, whilst Laporte has made zero errors leading to goals. This is a reminder of the impact he can have and why City are making the right call by keeping him at The Etihad heading into next season.

The 27-year-old beast can now provide Stones and Dias with quality competition for places in the 2021/22 campaign for City. This will, hopefully, help all three defenders to progress as they spur each other on to keep improving in order to maintain their place in the team, or win it back.

It also means that Guardiola will not be left with inadequate replacements if either Dias or Stones needs to drop out of the side due to rest, injury or suspension. This is why fans will be delighted that Laporte will seemingly still be a City player beyond the end of the transfer window.

Porto interested in Alfredo Morelos

Porto are reportedly interested in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos and if he were to leave Ibrox this summer it would be a huge blow to Steven Gerrard and his hopes of retaining the Scottish Premiership title next season.

What’s the word?

According to Portuguese news outlet A Bola, the Liga NOS side are keen on signing the Colombia international this summer as he would be a dream addition for manager Sergio Conceição, however Rangers’ asking price is likely to be a problem for the Portuguese giants.

The report suggests that Rangers would likely demand €20m (£17.2m) for Morelos this summer, which is no surprise after another impressive season at Ibrox helped Gerrard’s side win the league title unbeaten.

A huge potential blow for Rangers?

If Morelos were to leave Ibrox this summer it would undoubtedly be a huge blow to the Gers’ hopes of winning their 56th league title next season, as he has proven himself to be one of the best players in the league since joining from HJK Helsinki in 2017.

In 182 appearances for the Teddy Bears, El Bufalo has contributed an extremely impressive 94 goals and 43 assists in all competitions, and he also broke Ally McCoist’s record to become their record goalscorer in Europe, so to lose him ahead of their return to the Champions League next season would be far from ideal.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

After he broke the record, Gerrard was full of praise for Morelos, saying:

“It’s fantastic for him from a personal point of view. Alfredo’s a top-class player, a top-class goalscorer, and it’s fantastic that he’s still here.”

Last season saw the 24-year-old forward contribute 15 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the Gers and his performances in the Premiership before the season split saw him average an impressive 7.20 rating from WhoScored for his performances, which ranked him as the sixth-best performer in Gerrard’s side.

Therefore, it is certainly a blow that a side such as Porto who impressed in the Champions League last season are interested in Morelos ahead of the summer, and it would be a huge shame for Rangers to lose him.

Wolves: Fans unimpressed with Willy Boly

A number of Wolves fans have slammed Willy Boly for his performance against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Nuno Espirito Santo was taking charge of his final game as manager at Molineux and made three changes to the side which lost 1-0 to Everton on Wednesday evening, with Rui Patricio, Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker coming in for John Ruddy, Max Kilman and Morgan Gibbs-White respectively.

Wolves would guarantee a 12th place finish with a win over the Red Devils but could also finish as low as 15th, should results go against them. However, it was Boly‘s performance which had a number of Wolves fans talking on social media, and not for the right reasons.

The defender was making his 21st start of the Premier League campaign and 23rd appearance in all competitions. The 30-year-old was playing alongside Saiss and Conor Coday but struggled to deal with a much-changed United lineup on home soil, losing out on a number of duels against the visitors.

Anthony Elanga gave United an early lead at Molineux, with some taking aim at Boly’s efforts in the build-up to that goal, before his defensive colleague Nelson Semedo pulled Wolves level on 39 minutes.

Wolves fans react

Here is what these Wolves supporters had to say about Boly’s display, with one fan describing it as ‘pathetic’ and another slamming him as ‘poor’.

Villa interested in Burnley’s Chris Wood

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is eyeing a surprise move for Burnley striker Chris Wood this summer.

What’s the story?

Villa were heavily reliant on last summer’s signing Ollie Watkins to lead the line during the Premier League campaign, and to his credit, the former Brentford man rose to the occasion, scoring 16 goals in all competitions for his new club.

Football Insider claimed that the Clarets forward is being targeted as someone to add more firepower to Smith’s side, adding that Villa “are one of three top-12 Premier League clubs keeping close tabs on Wood.”

Premier League proven

The 29-year-old has been described as a “natural goalscorer” in the past by former Leeds manager Garry Monk, whilst former Millwall teammate Scott Malone believes “he’s frightening” to play against.

Since making the step up to the Premier League, the New Zealand international has been a very effective presence for the Clarets, with 47 goals in 136 top-flight games, leading Alan Shearer to rave about him.

The former Newcastle striker said: “I like him, I like what he does for the team and he is the focal point for them. He is very good at occupying two centre halves. He is a get out for Burnley if they want because they are not afraid to knock it long.

“He can keep hold of it and bring other players into the game. He is horrible to play against and he won’t give defenders a moment’s peace.”

The £7.2m-rated ace is the kind of Premier League-proven option who would offer Smith the chance to rotate with Watkins or even partner him next season.

Pundit urges Man United to sell de Gea

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 280 Premier League appearances, has urged Manchester United to sell David de Gea for £50million, following the emergence of Dean Henderson at Old Trafford.

Lee has spoken openly about the need for Man United to sell de Gea because of how good Henderson is, and he told FFC last month that the Red Devils should cash in for whatever they can this summer.

Since de Gea went to Spain for the birth of his child, the former number one has failed to win his spot back from Henderson, who has impressed mostly since being thrust into the spotlight at Old Trafford.

Speaking on why Henderson is good enough for Man United and how much they should be looking to sell de Gea for, Lee told FFC:

“He’s been under pressure and the spotlight at Man United, I think he’s done well and hasn’t put a foot wrong yet for them.

“I would sell de Gea, get him off the wage bill and sell him for £50 million or whatever you can get for him, and make Dean Henderson the number one.”

The £375,000-per-week shot-stopper was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and he has been a mainstay between the sticks from almost the minute he joined the club.

It has been reported that Man United may look to move de Gea on this summer because of his huge wages not warranting a backup keeper role.

Leeds’ interest in Omar Colley confirmed

Leeds United are interested in signing Sampdoria centre-back Omar Colley this summer, according to journalist Nicolo Schira.

Marcelo Bielsa and his players are preparing for Monday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool at Elland Road, in what is yet another test of the Whites’ top flight credentials.

Leeds clinched a memorable 2-1 win away to Manchester City in their last match, so confidence levels should be high going into the game, and if they push for a top ten finish this term, targets like Colley would be much more attainable this summer.

Leeds keen on signing Colley, claims journalist

Away from the pitch, the Whites continue to be linked with new signings, with Colley one of those who has been in the news already this week.

According to Schira on Twitter, Leeds ‘have asked’ for information regarding the 25-cap Gambia international, who is expected to cost between €10-12 million (£8.7-10.4 million).

Transfer Tavern take

Given the number of reports linking Leeds with Colley, it does appear as though their interest is genuine, but it doesn’t make a huge amount of sense.

In Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk, Bielsa already has four strong centre-back options at his disposal, with the quartet making 59 Premier League starts between them this season.

Unless one of the four is moving on, it is hard to see how the manager will be able to juggle five central defenders in 2021/22, keeping them all happy, while other areas of the side, such as left-back, may also be in need of more immediate improvement.

In other news, one figure has made a key claim about Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds future. Read more here.
