Jadeja, Santner and Rahane hand Mumbai a drubbing

Super Kings restricted the hosts to 157 before Rahane tonked a 27-ball 61 on his franchise debut

Deivarayan Muthu08-Apr-20233:10

What’s gone wrong for Suryakumar Yadav?

Chennai Super Kings lost their premier seamer Deepak Chahar to injury after he had bowled just one over. They were already without the match-winner from their last game, Moeen Ali (illness), and Ben Stokes (injured), but Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner combined to carve up Mumbai Indians’ middle order on a Wankhede pitch that offered some grip and turn.Mumbai boy Tushar Deshpande also pitched in with the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Tim David as Super Kings limited Mumbai to 157 for 8. Ajinkya Rahane, another Mumbai boy, dashed out of the blocks for Super Kings, hitting a 19-ball half-century to set up their chase. His 27-ball 61 on Super Kings debut allowed Ruturaj Gaikwad and rest of the batters breathing room after Devon Conway had fallen for a duck.In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been sidelined from the entire tournament with a back injury, and Jofra Archer, who sat out of this game as a precautionary measure, Mumbai’s attack lacked experience and penetration.Ajinkya Rahane hit three sixes while scoring 61 off 27 balls•BCCIRohit, Kishan start strongly for Mumbai
As Santner suggested during the mid-innings chat, the ball slid onto the bat nicely in the early exchanges before the pitch slowed down. Rohit charged out of the crease third ball and pumped Chahar over extra-cover before backing away and carving Deshpande over point for four in the next over.Sisanda Magala had a tough initiation to the IPL as Ishan Kishan took him for three fours in his first over, the third of the innings, which cost 14 runs overall. Magala, a death-bowling specialist from South Africa, was operating early in the powerplay because Chahar had left the field, clutching his hamstring, after bowling the first over. But Deshpande stepped up, drawing movement off the surface to beat Rohit’s outside edge and hit the top of middle and off with a beauty. Kishan then smashed Magala for two more fours, helping Mumbai end the powerplay at 61 for 1.Left-arm spin is right for CSK
In Super Kings’ previous game at Chepauk against Lucknow Super Giants, Jadeja bowled just one over as MS Dhoni kept him away from first Kyle Mayers and then Nicholas Pooran. On Saturday, Dhoni brought Jadeja into the attack immediately after the powerplay and the allrounder responded by having Kishan hole out for 32 off 21 balls.Jadeja kept bowling into the Wankhede pitch and came away with the wickets of Tilak Varma (22) and Cameron Green (12) as well.Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner finished with combined figures of 8-0-48-5•Associated PressSantner might not have played this game had Stokes or Moeen been available for selection, but he proved his worth once again. In stark contrast to Jadeja, Santner tossed the ball up at a much slower pace and dismissed both Suryakumar Yadav (1) and the left-handed Arshad Khan, who had been promoted to No.6 to counter him and Jadeja.Tim David, who was pushed down to No.7, went 6, 4, 6 against Deshpande before the seamer struck back to have him dragging an offcutter to deep midwicket. After taking a pasting in the powerplay, Magala unleashed his yorkers and slower variations at the death to finish with 4-0-37-1.Rahane slots into Uthappa role
After Conway fell in familiar fashion, chopping on in the first over, Rahane went on an unfamiliar boundary-hitting spree in the powerplay He crashed Arshad for 6, 4, 4, 4, 4 in the fourth over, and by the end of the powerplay he had zoomed to his half-century, setting Super Kings up for a net-run-rate-boosting victory. Before Robin Uthappa retired from international and Indian cricket last September, he used to be the enforcer in the powerplay and middle overs for Super Kings. Rahane slotted into this role straightaway, affording Gaikwad space to go at a run a ball or thereabouts.Mumbai brought in left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya as their Impact Player, but Super Kings messed with their plans by promoting their spin-hitter Shivam Dube to No. 4. Kartikeya eventually bowled Dube for 28 off 26 balls, but the game was all but up by then. Rayudu, who replaced Chahar as Super Kings’ Impact Player, and Gaikwad completed the formalities with seven wickets and almost two overs to spare.Super Kings notched up their second successive victory and will be bolstered further by the arrival of Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana ahead of their home game against Rajasthan Royals on April 12. On the other hand, Mumbai slipped to their second successive loss and are still searching for their first points this season.

Berta is in love with him: Arsenal in talks to sign £60m Zubimendi upgrade

The winter transfer window was nothing short of disastrous for Arsenal this year.

Mikel Arteta’s side were still in both domestic cups and just about within touching distance of Liverpool atop the Premier League when it was opened, yet the board opted not to sign a single player despite the attack being decimated.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

The Gunners are now out of both cups, miles off the Reds in the league, and could still be without two of their regular front three when they face Real Madrid in the Champions League next month.

The only transfer-related positive to come out of January was the surprise news that the North Londoners were seen as the most likely to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi come the summer.

However, recent reports have linked Arsenal with a potential upgrade on the Spaniard, a player that incoming Sporting Director Andrea Berta has reportedly tried to sign before.

Arsenal targeting Zubimendi upgrade under Berta

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are planning for a big summer of transfer activity and have identified Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães as one of their key targets.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the report has revealed that the desire to chase the Brazilian international stems primarily from incoming Sporting Director Andrea Berta, who is ‘in love’ with him and tried to sign him three times while at Atlético Madrid. The fact the Italian would like to bring him to the Emirates has already been brought up in talks with the player’s circle.

The good news for the North Londoners is that the story claims a failure to qualify for the Champions League this season will see the asking price for the midfield monster drop to just £60m.

It could be a complicated and still relatively costly transfer to get over the line, but given Guimarães immense ability, one well worth pursuing, even if that means skipping out on Zubimendi.

How Guimarães compares to Zubimendi

In an ideal world, Arsenal would be able to sign both midfielders this summer, but with the attack needing some serious investment, we can see a world in which it’s one or the other.

Bruno Guimaraes

In that case, it would probably be a wise choice for Berta and Co to come down on the side of Guimarães, as while he and Zubimendi can both play in either the eight or six roles, he is the more dangerous of the pair in an attacking sense.

Moreover, with someone like Declan Rice on the team who can also play both roles to a high level, we’d argue that the ability to help out in attacks is more important, considering the defensive solidity of Arteta’s side.

For example, in just 36 appearances this term, the “world-class” midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored three goals and provided eight assists, equating to a goal involvement on average every 3.27 games.

In contrast, the San Sebastian-born ace has scored one goal and provided two assists in 36 appearances, equating to a goal involvement every 12 games.

Bruno Guimaraes celebrates for Newcastle

Ultimately, while both players would be fine additions to this Arsenal squad, Guimarães would undoubtedly be the better signing and one that would kick-start Berta’s tenure in a big way.

+ Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Brasileiro

REAÇÃO SOB A BATUTA DO MAESTRO

RECUO DESNECESSÁRIO E CASTIGO NO FIM

New name: Newcastle tracking "magnificent" £40m winger who PSG want to sign

Newcastle United are said to be interested in signing a “magnificent” attacking player in the summer transfer window, with a host of other Premier League clubs also keen.

Newcastle prepare for biggest game in decades

Eddie Howe’s side may have picked up an important 1-0 win away to West Ham on Monday night, but there is only one game that truly matters to the team and the supporters this week, in the grand scheme of things. On Sunday afternoon, Newcastle take on Liverpool in the EFL Cup final, looking to end a painful 70-year wait for a domestic trophy, which is a scarcely believable statistic.

Howe and his players know that they can become instant legends with victory at Wembley, in what would be an achievement that is remembered forever. The Magpies are coming up against a superb Reds team, however, with Arne Slot’s side cruising to Premier League glory this season.

Regardless of what happens at Wembley this weekend, however, Newcastle know the importance of making some key new signings in the summer window, ensuring that they continue to kick on after a quiet couple of windows this season. Now, a new transfer target has been thrown into the mix.

Newcastle keen on "magnificent" Lyon star wanted by PSG and Liverpool

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Newcastle are interested in signing Lyon winger Malick Fofana this summer in a potential £40m+ move, with the youngster himself open to leaving.

The Magpies are far from alone in eyeing up the exciting 19-year-old, however, with Liverpool one of the clubs they are looking to pip to his signature. Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are all mentioned as potential suitors, too.

Fofana is a player with a huge amount of potential, already catching the eye for Lyon at such a tender age, scoring six goals in just five starts in the Europa League this season.

The teenage Belgian also has three goals and four assists to his name in Ligue 1 this term, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as a “magnificent” footballer.

Primarily a left-sided winger, Fofana could come in and provide great competition for Anthony Gordon in that area of the pitch – potentially more than Harvey Barnes currently is, following a slightly disappointing season for the Englishman that has seen him restricted to just seven starts in the Premier League.

Given his age, the Lyon starlet should only get better, too, and if Newcastle could beat Liverpool and others to his signature, it would feel like a major coup.

Fofana has won one cap for Belgium’s senior team to date – surely the first of many in the coming years – and he has represented his country across six different youth age groups, which outlines his pedigree.

Arsenal now "working hard" to convince "world-class" £310k-p/w star to join

Arsenal are now “working hard” to convince a “world-class” player to join in the summer, with talks ongoing to gauge what it would take to get a deal over the line, according to ex-scout Mick Brown.

Gunners eyeing players with Champions League pedigree

The Gunners have almost certainly booked their place in the Champions League quarter-final after a 7-1 demolition of PSV Eindhoven away from home last night, and they are continuing to look at other players performing well in Europe’s elite competition this season.

After the arrival of new director of football Andrea Berta is confirmed, a bid could be made for Lille striker Jonathan David, who assisted Hakon Arnar Harldsson’s goal in the French side’s 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund yesterday.

Not only are the north Londoners keen on a striker, but they are also looking at strengthening in central midfield, and Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios has now been identified as a potential alternative to Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, amid interest from Real Madrid.

Arsenal now preparing £83m offer for "future legend" instead of Zubimendi

The Gunners are now assessing alternatives to Zubimendi, who is yet to fully agree a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Another midfielder Arsenal have been linked with is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, and Brown has now dropped an update on their pursuit of the German in an interview with Football Insider.

“Arsenal have been working hard behind the scenes to reach an agreement with him. They’ve been speaking to his representatives to gauge what it would take to agree a deal.

Bayern Munich's JoshuaKimmichcelebrates

“Now, they’ll be trying to convince him to join them rather than going elsewhere or staying at Bayern. Kimmich would bring a lot of experience to this Arsenal team and I think that’s what Mikel Arteta will be looking at – he’s won all there is to win.”

"World class" Kimmich could be a fantastic signing

Kimmich could be a versatile option for Arteta, having regularly featured at right-back and central-midfield throughout his career, and his ability going forward has been on show in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League this season.

The Germany international has already reached 10 assists in all competitions, and he ranks highly across a number of key attacking metrics over the past year, when compared to other midfielders.

Combine the “world-class” midfielder’s talent on the front foot with his ability to fill in at right-back when required, as well as his proven track record of winning trophies, and Arsenal could have a fantastic signing this summer, should they win the race for his signature.

The only concern will be the fact Kimmich is now 30-years-old, and he is on very high wages with Bayern, raking in £310k-per-week, so the Gunners will need to be careful not to hand out a huge contract to a player who may not have re-sell value.

Stoinis to undergo scans after hurting finger during LSG's big win

After losing to Gujarat Titans in a game KL Rahul said he didn’t know how they lost, Lucknow Super Giants bounced back with a thumping 56-run win over Punjab Kings in Mohali.According to Rahul, the six-day gap between the two games helped the players take their minds off the defeat and come back stronger.”The last game was a bit of a downer and did hurt us as a team,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation. “But we had three or four days’ break after that, which was good. Everyone got some time off, got their minds off cricket, and just rested a bit. We came back fresher and we were always clear on how we wanted to bat.”Related

And this is how they batted: after Kings inserted them, Kyle Mayers, Ayush Badoni, Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran all played blazing knocks to muscle Super Giants to 257 for 5, the second-highest total in IPL history. In response, Kings could manage 201.Stoinis was the biggest contributor with bat, scoring 72 off 40 balls. With ball, he got rid of Shikhar Dhawan in the first over of the chase. His Player-of-the-Match performance would have tasted even sweeter had he not hurt his finger while trying to make a stop in his follow-through.It happened in Stoinis’ second over, when he tried to intercept an Atharva Taide shot and took a blow to his left index finger. Wincing in pain, Stoinis went down on his knees almost immediately and, after initial treatment by the physio, walked off the field.”It’s been better but yeah, it is what it is,” Stoinis said after the game. “We will get a scan later.”The Mohali pitch was quite in contrast to the slow Lucknow surface Super Giants played on against Titans. Talking about what he and Badoni were discussing during their stand of 89 in 47 balls for the third wicket, Stoinis said, “We were joking about the difference between that and our surface at home, and how we can cash in and take advantage of this beautiful batting wicket.”No, I wasn’t [thinking about 250]. I don’t think Ayush was either. We were just trying to build a partnership. He got off to a flyer as well and was hitting some nice shots; he’s a very talented player. We were just trying to keep building on that and that was our only focus.”It was the first time Stoinis was batting at No. 4 this IPL. Until now, he had batted either at No. 5 or 6. But he isn’t really fussed about batting higher up the order. And while he has five wickets from just 8.5 overs in the tournament, he felt his bowling was better suited to Lucknow’s slow tracks.”I do enjoy the responsibility of batting a bit lower and seeing the game home as well,” he said. “Part of my journey has been batting in every position. Bowl the first over, bowl the last over, try to mix and match, I’m happy to do whatever my team needs.”I was swinging a few in the nets the other day, so the bowling coach got a bit excited and thought maybe start me with the new ball. But probably our home wicket suits me a little bit more in terms of taking the pace off and being a bit more creative and using the wicket. No one loves bowling on flat ones.”
