Shorey, Sindhu and Murasingh headline opening day of Duleep Trophy

Shorey’s ton and Nishant’s unbeaten fifty helped North end the day on top while Murasingh’s five-for skittled Central for 182

Himanshu Agrawal28-Jun-2023Murasingh gets five for East; Avesh hits back for CentralTripura’s right-arm pace bowler Manisankar Murasingh led the way for East Zone with 5 for 42 to help them bundle Central Zone out for 182 on the first evening of their Duleep Trophy quarter-final game in Alur. Central lost 6 for 35 in a middle and lower-order collapse, four wickets out of which went to Murasingh. The fall for Central started when Murasingh had wicketkeeper-batter Upendra Yadav caught for 25 in the 59th over, before removing Saransh Jain without scoring two balls later. All of Central’s top-six batters threw away settled starts with none scoring more than 38. At 86 for 4, Rinku Singh and Upendra got down for some repair work by adding 61. But before the pair could put up anything massive, Murasingh got Upendra to disrupt the opposition’s momentum. Before that, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed had struck twice to get Rinku, for 38, and Shubham Sharma for 13.However, Avesh Khan ensured that East didn’t walk away without any damage despite Central’s meagre total. Avesh trapped East’s captain Abhimanyu Easwaran lbw with the first ball he bowled, before going on to have Shantanu Mishra lbw for 6 in the tenth over. He bowled six out of the 12 overs and finished with 2 for 13. East, who ended the day at 32 for 2, had sent in Shahbaz Nadeem as nightwatcher after Mishra’s dismissal. Sudeep Kumar Gharami was unbeaten at the other end with three boundaries in his knock.Dhruv Shorey struck 135 on the opening day of North Zone’s Duleep Trophy clash•PTI Shorey and Sindhu power NorthDelhi opening batter Dhruv Shorey hit 135 and held North Zone’s middle order together, as North ended day one of their game against North East Zone at a comfortable 306 for 6 after being at a dicey 162 for 4 at one stage. North were also propelled by Haryana’s teenaged allrounder Nishant Sindhu, who ended unbeaten on 76, as they made an inexperienced North East attack work hard in Bengaluru.Shorey, whose innings came off 211 balls and included 22 fours, was involved in crucial partnerships during his stay. He first added 80 with fellow opening partner Prashant Chopra, before Chopra and No. 3 Ankit Kalsi fell to Pheiroijam Jotin off successive balls. Shorey then added 59 with Prabhsimran Singh for the third wicket and eventually another 80 with Sindhu for the fifth wicket.Kishan Sangha then nipped out Shorey and North captain Jayant Yadav in the space of three deliveries. But Sindhu ensured that his side ended the day without further hiccups, stitching a 64-run unbeaten stand in a little over 20 overs with Pulkit Narang.

Ravindra Jadeja dismissal: right decision made despite DRS 'glitch'

A clarification has been issued regarding Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal in India’s first innings of the second Test in Port-of-Spain, with broadcast commentators saying during the tea analysis show that the correct decision was made by the TV umpire despite “a glitch” during the DRS process.India were 360 for 5 in the 104th over when Kemar Roach offered a ball wide outside off stump. Jadeja took the bait, driving away from his body, and turned around to see the wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva go up in immediate celebration. Jadeja was expressionless. And so was the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus.West Indies challenged the on-field decision of not out and DRS came into play, starting with the spin-vision replay, which showed bat and ball were close together. The TV umpire Michael Gough then asked for the assistance of UltraEdge. The replay that came up, however, seemed to be for a different shot that Jadeja played. The actual ball was wide outside off stump and Jadeja was playing away from his body. At the point where the ball passed the outside edge of his bat, his bat was quite visibly away from his pad. But in the replay where UltraEdge showed a clear spike, Jadeja’s bat was so close to front pad that his inside edge flicks it. Furthermore, the shot he was playing in the UltraEdge replay seemed to be a straight-bat shot. The actual shot that put Jadeja in trouble was more of an extra-cover drive.Umpire Gough was satisfied that there was an edge and asked the on-field umpire Erasmus to reverse his decision. Jadeja was dismissed for 61 off 152 balls and walked off without protest.Later on, while on air with Curtly Ambrose and Samuel Badree, Daren Ganga offered a clarification while speaking to visuals of the correct replay of the wicket delivery. “This is the actual replay and the ball part. There was no contact with bat on pad,” he said, while the replay was shown on the broadcast. “This is the correct UltraEdge. And the right decision was made in the end, that is the most important thing.”Just to clear that issue up and basically set the record straight, no fault of the umpires or the system, it’s just a glitch that took place.”

Arsenal now racing to sign "exciting" £21m colossus with "elite potential"

Arsenal are now racing to sign an “exciting” £21m player in the summer transfer window, alongside a number of their Premier League rivals, according to a report.

Gunners gearing up for busy summer

As we approach the business end of the Premier League season, it is looking increasingly likely that Mikel Arteta’s side will finish in second place for the third season on the spin, with injury issues doing the manager absolutely no favours.

With that in mind, Arteta has set out to bring in more depth in the summer transfer window, and one position in which he is currently lacking options is striker, with the likes of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres being targeted to fill the gap.

Bukayo Saka’s absence has also exposed the need to bring in new wide options, and the Gunners are now racing to sign Ademola Lookman, while Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi are among the targets in central midfield.

Arsenal could now look to hijack Man City move for "world-class" £54m star

ByDominic Lund Mar 25, 2025

One position which may be viewed as less of a priority is goalkeeper, but with Neto set to return to AFC Bournemouth at the end of the campaign, Arteta may be tasked with bringing in a new back-up option between the sticks.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are now racing a number of their Premier League rivals for Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Newcastle United also in the picture.

Senne Lammens for Royal Antwerp.

Lammens has caught the eye this season, given his impressive distribution of the ball and presence in the penalty area, with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain also placing him on their shortlist.

Amid the widespread interest in the goalkeeper, Antwerp believe they can hold out for a fee of around €20m – €25m (£17m – £21m).

"Exciting" Lammens is one for the future

There is currently little reason to replace David Raya, who is in the prime of his career at 29-years-old, however there are signs the Antwerp goalkeeper could be capable of being a solid long-term replacement.

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has spoken particularly highly of the Belgian, having been impressed by his ability to stop crosses and distribute the ball.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also described the 6 foot 4 colossus as “exciting”, and that is definitely how you would describe his last-gasp goal for Club Brugge to progress against Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth League.

Signing a new goalkeeper shouldn’t be a priority for Arsenal this summer, given that any new signing is unlikely to displace Raya in the starting XI, but Lammens could definitely be one for the future.

James Fuller's four wickets help Hampshire to fifth win of campaign

Tom Moores 81 threatens chance of upset before five Notts wickets fall in 90 minutes

Hampshire 166 (Gubbins 49, James 3-38, Hutton 3-40, Paterson 3-56) and 344 for 5 dec (Holland 138*, Dawson 82, Fuller 52*) beat Nottinghamshire 100 (Holland 4-19) and 294 (Moores 81, Clarke 67, Fuller 4-59) by 116 runsTom Moores flailed tired bowlers in the evening with 81, his first fifty of the season, to threaten just the chance of a remarkable upset but he became the first of five final men to fall in 90 minutes as Hampshire completed their fifth win this campaign by 116 runs.Challenged to make 411 in a theoretical maximum of 202 overs by their late declaration on Thursday, Nottinghamshire started the third day of the Trent Bridge LV= Insurance County Championship match with the neat equation before them of exactly 400 runs required and all ten men standing. In fact the more key early stat was supplied by the seamers: Mohammad Abbas struck with his third ball of the day, Kyle Abbott with his second and, after rain stole 13 overs, James Fuller with his fifth and eleventh balls of the match. Hampshire’s formidable pace pack sensed victory at 76 for 4.A stand of 99 slightly shifted the balance until Joe Clarke, twice missed, finally fell for 67 to Fuller, who finished with 4 for 59, and Moores, after adding 64 with Lyndon James, had his off stump clipped still 30 overs from the scheduled close. The home demise began in the morning’s second over when Ben Slater, in what has been a season of struggle, was unable to add to his overnight eight before a beauty from Abbas straightened to hit off stump. When Abbott arrived as first change and found the immediate lift to take the shoulder of Will Young’s bat and see the Kiwi lob to the ‘keeper for the same score, Nottinghamshire were 40 for 2.Rain arrived three balls later and, soon after the afternoon resumption, Clarke was reprieved on one at second slip off the same bowler before Fuller, the fifth seamer employed, ended Haseeb Hameed’s fluent 30 by having the acting captain held high at third slip from a defensive edge. He then disposed of South African Matt Montgomery for a ninth-ball duck.Born in Cape Town but raised in New Zealand, Fuller is one of four bowlers in Hampshire’s pace quintet who all learned their cricket abroad but it was the lone home-grown seamer, Keith Barker, who should have ended a fifth-wicket revival then worth 50.A top-edged cut from Clarke flashed between ‘keeper and slip, the latter only belatedly reacting, as a fortuitous boundary brought up Clarke’s fifty. Next over, another shower forced an early tea but no loss of time.It meant the last session stretched ahead for potentially 53.2 overs and ten of them had gone by the time Fuller, in a second spell, cut one back to remove Clarke’s middle stump for 67. Moores then accelerated until spin made its first Hampshire appearance of the match – and Liam Dawson, aghast, saw him dropped at the wicket from his twelfth ball.It was finally yet another seamer, the Australian-raised Ian Holland, who clipped his off stump, Moores’s 81 coming from 109 balls, before Abbas returned to bowl James, ending 20 overs at the crease for 21. When Brett Hutton edged behind for nine Fuller had secured his fourth success.Refusing runs to farm the strike, Calvin Harrison held out until the new ball was available – and immediately taken in bright sunshine at 6.25 with 13 overs left. But Toby Pettman, left two balls to face from the first of them, fended to short leg off the second. Harrison, last to go, was leg-before to Abbas for 39, 27 balls later.

Eddie Byrom's maiden hundred trumps Andy Umeed 116 in two-wicket thriller

High-scoring shootout enlivens dead-rubber at Taunton

ECB Reporters Network20-Aug-2023Eddie Byrom notched a maiden List A century against his former club as Glamorgan beat Somerset by two wickets in a battle of the Metro Bank One Day Cup Group B also-rans at Taunton. The home side posted 298 for seven after winning the toss, opener Andy Umeed scoring 116 off 136 balls, with nine fours and three sixes. Nineteen-year-old off-spinner Ben Kellaway was the pick of the Glamorgan attack with three for 49.In reply, the visitors made 301 for eight from 47.1 overs, Byrom striking 108 from 103 deliveries on the ground where he launched his county career. Kiran Carlson contributed 75 to a third-wicket stand of 142, while Billy Root hit 74 not out.It was only Glamorgan’s third group win in seven games, while for Somerset a fifth defeat continued a disappointing campaign.George Thomas ensured a brisk start to Somerset’s innings, lifting a six over fine leg off the second ball of the second over, sent down by Ruaidhri Smith, on his way to an attractive 41 off 28 balls.Tim van der Gugten made a much-needed breakthrough for Glamorgan in the ninth over when Thomas was well caught low down by Smith at mid-on with the total on 60.Umeed and Lewis Goldsworthy then put together a century stand in good time, Umeed moving to a stylish half-century off 66 balls, and Goldsworthy lending solid support as they took the score to 173 in the 32nd over. When Goldsworthy holed out to deep square off Zain-ul-Hassan with his side looked set to make well in excess of 300. But Carlson began Glamorgan’s fightback by running out James Rew and Kellaway had begun a telling spell from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End.The young spinner maintained an exemplary line and length to send back Sean Dickson, Umeed and Josh Thomas, preventing a late acceleration and keeping his side well in the game.It was left to Danny Lamb (41) and George Bartlett (35 not out) to bolster Somerset’s score, but it looked no more than par on a true pitch with the sun out.Glamorgan’s initial response was to lose two wickets in as many overs, Sam Northeast bowled between bat and pad by Jack Brooks and Colin Ingram brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Rew, diving full length, off Ned Leonard to make it 13 for two.But soon Byrom and Carlson were counter-attacking with a flurry of boundaries, Carlson greeting the introduction of J.T.Langridge with a six over backward point in the left-arm seamer’s first over.Langridge’s first two overs went for 28 as the Glamorgan pair took the total to 88 for two after ten. Carlson raced to fifty off 29 balls, with 6 fours and 3 sixes, and Byrom soon followed, off 38 deliveries, with 10 fours. The hundred stand occupied less than 12 overs as Somerset’s bowlers were put to the sword, not aided by some sloppy ground fielding. It was a surprise when with the score on 155, Carlson carelessly cut a catch to point off Lamb.Byrom continued on his merry way and was on 80 when a shower interrupted play at 185 for three, with Glamorgan needing less than five an over. The rain soon passed and an edge to third man for his 16th four took Byrom to his first List A hundred off 94 balls as Glamorgan closed in rapidly on their target, Root contributing a valuable 44-ball half-century.Byrom was finally bowled by occasional leg-spinner Umeed, his first List A wicket. Kellaway, Alex Horton, ul Hassan and van der Gugten fell cheaply in the closing stages, Umeed finishing with three for 31, but Root stayed calm to see Glamorgan home.

Shanto out of Asia Cup with hamstring injury, Bangladesh bring in Litton

Litton, who missed the start of the Asia Cup with an illness, linked up with the team in Lahore a couple of days ago

A hamstring injury has ruled Bangladesh batter Najmul Hossain Shanto out of the rest of the Asia Cup.The BCB said that Shanto would be brought back home to begin his rehabilitation, with an eye on getting him fit in time for the ODI World Cup, which starts October 5. He will be replaced by Litton Das, who was omitted from the original squad following a bout of ill health, had flown into Lahore on Tuesday morning to join the team.Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said that Shanto picked up the injury during his century against Afghanistan earlier this week – he did appear to be struggling in the latter part of his innings. Shanto continued to bat until he got out for 104, but didn’t come out to field during the Afghanistan innings.”The player had complained of hamstring pain during batting and could not field. We had an MRI scan done confirming a muscle tear,” the physio said in a statement. “As a precaution, Shanto will not take any further part in the tournament and will be returning home to start rehab and prepare for the World Cup.”Shanto is the Asia Cup’s leading run-scorer at this stage, having made 89 in the first game against Sri Lanka before the century against Afghanistan, totalling 193 runs.Litton is likely to open the innings, and that might force Bangladesh to tweak their batting order, since they have so far opened with Mohammad Naim and one of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanzid Hasan, and Shanto had batted at No. 3, his usual position, against Sri Lanka and No. 4 against Afghanistan.
