Missing Mane must improve following Leicester shocker

Two weeks on from beating Tottenham in the Premier League a supposedly refreshed and restored Liverpool slumped to a rather familiar looking, tired and lacklustre defeat against Leicester City.

It’s being painted as a shock that the Foxes beat the Reds 3-1, especially given the away side were in La Manga not too long ago trying to get themselves ready for the top four run-in.

Is it really a shock, though?

Liverpool, for whatever reason, cannot beat the so-called lesser sides when it really matters and this performance last night was a carbon copy of those against the likes of Burnley and Hull City earlier this year.

Indeed, the Reds, going forward, looked fresh out of ideas pretty much from the get-go and few things summarise that better than Sadio Mane’s performance last night…

As our infographic shows, the Senegalese winger – so relied upon for being the Reds’ source of attacking inspiration this year – went missing on Monday night.

He was clattered early on by Jamie Vardy and looked uninterested for the rest of the game – much to Liverpool’s disadvantage.

Dispossessed more than anyone else in the Liverpool XI, this was arguably Mane’s worst performance for the club to date, and it was surely reflected by another dent to the Anfield side’s top four aspirations.

Derby captain could return for Nottingham Forest showdown

Derby County have received a big fitness boost heading into Saturday’s East Midlands encounter against Nottingham Forest.

The club’s captain Richard Keogh has been passed fit after missing the last four games with a calf strain.

The 30-year-old defender was on a run of 105 consecutive league starts when he was struck with the injury during Derby’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on February 25.

With one of the biggest games on the Rams’ calendar scheduled for this weekend, it is positive news to have Keogh back in contention.

The Derby Telegraph quotes Keogh as saying:

“It has been a good recovery and I am quite lucky in that respect because I heal quite well. The rehab went well and for the Brighton game there was a big chance I could maybe play but for whatever reason we decided it wasn’t worth the risk.”

Not only does the game give one of the competitors bragging rights, it is the first clash for both clubs’ new managers.

Derby recently appointed ex-Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett as their new man in charge following the sacking of Steve McClaren.

The Rams will be heading to the City Ground to take on a team that will be playing under Mark Warburton for the first time.

The 54-year-old, who controversially left Rangers last month, was named as the permanent successor to Philippe Montanier.

As it stands, Derby sit 10th in the Championship table, 10 points adrift of the playoff places, while Forest are struggling at the bottom.

Back-to-back defeats have left them just two points above the relegation zone.

Manchester United fans back club on Twitter to land big name targets

Such is the nature of Manchester United these days, every time the summer transfer window is remotely in sight, fans online seem to clamour for big name arrivals.

Last summer, the Red Devils showed the world that no transfer was beyond them, as they splashed out a world record sum to bring Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford from Juventus. While the Frenchman is currently struggling to get to grips with life back in the Premier League, his arrival only wet the appetite of fans all over the globe.

So, with the links to the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann doing the rounds ahead of what promises to be another earth-shattering summer at the Theatre of Dreams, social media users have taken to Twitter to back Ed Woodward and company in landing such big name talents.

Though Woodward hasn’t always convinced in the transfer market, last summer proved United remain big players on that front and the support behind him is obvious.

With that in mind, here’s a look at how Manchester United fans on Twitter begged Woodward to land further huge names this summer.

Chelsea fans react as key man could miss crucial Manchester City clash

Chelsea star Victor Moses is once again a doubt for the side’s crucial match against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, and it is news that has come as a blow to Blues supporters.

The 26-year-old missed the match against Crystal Palace after picking up a toe injury in the win against Manchester United before the international break, and the hosts obviously missed him as they suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat.

The Nigeria international has become a key man in a right wing-back position under Antonio Conte this term, and the Italian chose to experiment with Pedro there against the Eagles, but it didn’t pay off.

Chelsea fans were quick to have their say on the injury update via social media, with many concerned that Conte may need to change his formation against Pep Guardiola’s men if they are to be without Moses.

West Ham fans react as Slaven Bilic speaks before crucial Swansea clash

West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic said in his pre-match press conference ahead of a crucial clash against Swansea City at the London Stadium on Saturday that if his side stick together, the results will come.

A run of five successive Premier League defeats has dragged the Irons towards the bottom three and they face the 18th-placed Swans – who they are five points above in the table – this weekend.

The Hammers are in desperate need of a victory to ease their relegation fears, as well as relieving the pressure that is building on Bilic after a season that has been filled with poor performances and results.

West Ham supporters were quick to have their say on the Croatian’s latest battle cry via social media, and they are understandably furious with how things are going right now.

Some certainly weren’t afraid to vent that anger against their boss, but other fans are still maintaining that they must get behind the team while they are in need.

A new Wilshere contract is the best move Arsenal have made in years

Not much about Arsenal has made sense of late. At their lowest ebb in years, Champions League football may finally elude Arsene Wenger after two decades of constantly securing it, while Tottenham Hotspur are all but certain to finish above the Gunners at long last.

Still, rather than finally parting ways with Arsene Wenger after over twenty years in charge this summer, all the indications seem to point towards another year or two for the Frenchman. While that decision is likely to spark even more debate amongst the club’s seemingly divided fanbase, he’s not the only one to be handed a probable new deal by top brass this summer.

Recent reports suggest Jack Wilshere is in line for another contract this summer, despite seeing his loan move to Bournemouth present him with even more problems. Having struggled with injuries over the past few years, relocating to the south coast for a year was supposed to afford the England international time and space to rediscover his best form.

Though injuries (until recently) haven’t plagued the midfielder nearly as much as they had during his last few years in north London, Wilshere just hasn’t been that good for the Cherries. Indeed, he’s only been able to record two assists for Eddie Howe’s side this season, despite playing reasonably regularly (27 PL appearances) and will now surely be an afterthought for Gareth Southgate at international level.

So, why bother giving him a new deal? While Arsenal’s midfield hasn’t been much to shout about this season, the presence of Granit Xhaka and Santi Cazorla surely provide better options, with the likes of Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny there to support them. Barring any huge upturn in form, Wilshere looks to be the odd man out and Wenger’s No.10 is at sixes and sevens.

To many, Arsenal’s reported decision to open talks with him over extending his contract lends itself to the same old, same old feeling to have seen the club struggle to progress in recent years.

However, if he does indeed pen a new deal at the club, it could be their smartest transfer decision in years. Let’s not forget, this is a side who allowed captain Robin van Persie enter the final year of his contract before leading Manchester United to a league title under Sir Alex Ferguson, one who’ve failed to wholly convince in the transfer market for what must seem like an eternity to the supporters.

Giving Wilshere a fresh contract makes total sense. Despite his problems, the 24-year-old is undoubtedly a talented player, one touted as a potential target for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City only recently. Granted, he’s since suffered a fractured leg injury, though links with a move to the Etihad came despite a poor season with Bournemouth.

Furthermore, considering the premium imposed on English talent in the transfer market, Arsenal protecting their asset is actually sound financial planning. A cynical way of looking at it perhaps, though the sort of mentality desperately required by a club so often let down by their naivety.

It’s hard to imagine Wilshere not having a rather large list of suitors, from home and abroad. At 24, he still has the chance to embark on a solid career in the Premier League, even if he never truly embarks on the upward trajectory many prophecised for him years ago. Failing that, the kind of profile he carries will invariably make him an attractive option to either teams on the continent, or even the Chinese Super League.

Arsenal have been naive with Wilshere over the years, though are finally dealing with his situation in the right way. Now, it’s just for the rest of the team.

Newcastle United fans mock club for brief statement

Newcastle United fans have mocked the club for publishing a very short statement regarding the HMRC’s widespread investigation into suspected £5m tax fraud in football.

The UK tax authority released a statement on Wednesday confirming that “several men” working within football were arrested and that 180 HMRC officers were investigating various properties across the country and in France.

The Guardian reported that Newcastle’s offices, including those at the club’s Darsley Park training ground were raided.

The home of managing director Lee Charnley was also searched, and the man himself was arrested and later released without charge.

The club were silent throughout the day when the events were unfolding, but at 6.18pm they released a very short statement, failing to provide much information.

It read:

“Newcastle United can confirm that a member of its staff has this morning been assisting HMRC with their inquiries. The club will be making no further comment at this time.”

As expected, fans were not particularly impressed with the Magpies’ update.

The HMRC confirmed that business records, financial records, mobile phones and computers have been seized in their widespread raid.

West Ham United’s London Stadium was also searched, while documentation was requested during a visit to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

There has been no confirmation yet as to what clubs or individuals are at the centre of this investigation.

Man City 2-1 Leicester: Liverpool target Ben Chilwell impresses once again

One of Jurgen Klopp’s priorities during the summer transfer window will surely be to sign a new left-back, with Alberto Moreno proving so unreliable midfielder James Milner has filled in at No.3 for the vast majority of the season.

Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell represents a potential candidate. Liverpool saw a £7million bid for the defender rejected by the Foxes last summer and The Express reported in February that the Anfield club are plotting another offer for the end of the season.

The 20-year-old’s first team exposure at the King Power Stadium has been relatively limited thus far, making only four starts in the top flight before Leicester’s trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City on Saturday.

The Foxes came away empty-handed in a 2-1 defeat but Chilwell’s performance really stood out, especially considering it came against the top-scoring side in the Premier League this term before the latest batch of fixtures.

Indeed, Chilwell lined up against Raheem Sterling and had a fine game, weighing in with four tackles, six interceptions, two successful aerial duels and two clearances.

But perhaps more importantly considering the offensive demands placed on full-backs these days, he used the ball well too, flinging two crosses into the box and finishing up with the most touches of any Leicester player.

Chilwell still represents a gamble for Liverpool simply because of his limited experience, but the early signs suggest he’s a top talent in the making. Should Liverpool swoop for the youngster this summer? Let us know by voting below…

Tottenham fans react as Sissoko hits out at Pochettino and hints at exit

According to an interview in L’Equipe, via GFFN, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko has demanded better communication from manager Mauricio Pochettino and hinted he could leave the club this summer.

The France international only joined Spurs in a £30m deal from Newcastle United last summer, but he has struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane and played the full 90 minutes on just one occasion throughout the Premier League campaign, with the majority of his appearances coming from the substitutes’ bench.

It appears as though both Pochettino and the fans have been far from impressed with the contribution of the Frenchman considering how much he cost them last year, and he could be moved on this summer.

Tottenham supporters were quick to give their thoughts on the 28-year-old’s comments via social media, and they are delighted that he could be going, but also angry that he is blaming Pochettino for his disappointing form.

Man United fans praying Smalling performs in Europa League final

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has named his starting line-up for the crucial Europa League final tie against Ajax in Stockholm, with Marouane Fellaini starting and Chris Smalling preferred to Phil Jones alongside Daley Blind at the heart of the defence.

Sergio Romero also got the nod over David De Gea in goal as United look to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League after failing to secure a top four finish in the Premier League.

If they lose, Mourinho will know they will compete in this competition again next term and the nerves will be building among fans in the build up to the kick-off.

Those United supporters were quick to have their say on the starting XI via social media, with many nervous about the inclusion of Smalling and hoping that the England international puts in a big performance in the club’s biggest match of the season.
