Leeds fans heap praise on Cooper’s transformation

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Leeds fans have been reflecting on the week’s Championship action, and they’re absolutely full of praise for club captain Liam Cooper.

Last season, Cooper was one of the primary scapegoats when things were going so poorly under Paul Heckingbottom.

The captain was a symbol of everything going wrong at the club, constantly struggling with injuries and failing to reach expectations.

Since the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa though, perhaps only Kalvin Phillips can claim a bigger turnaround in fortunes than Cooper, who is now absolutely crucial to the Whites’ promotion push.

The 27 year-old, who of course assisted Phillips’ late equaliser at Middlesbrough last weekend, was in fine form once again on Wednesday evening as Leeds dominated Swansea City at Elland Road.

The Swans did get a late consolation goal from the spot after goals from Pontus Jansson and Jack Harrison gave the hosts a 2-0 lead, but this was a dominant performance from Bielsa’s side, particularly through the spine of the team.

Cooper won three aerial duels, made four interceptions and also completed 85 per cent of his passes, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Two goalkeepers Crystal Palace should look to solve their issues

Roy Hodgson has impressively weaved his magic around Crystal Palace.

The Eagles have no problems scoring goals, despite the form (or lack thereof) Christian Benteke has been showing for what seems like an eternity.

Yet, interestingly, it’s largely been their work on the other end of the field which separates them from a top-half side. Indeed, they’ve conceded 39 goals so far, mostly due to erroneous defending or stumbles from goalkeepers, undermining the Eagles’ otherwise good work.

Neither Vicente Guaita nor Wayne Hennessey are consistent enough between the posts, with both making silly mistakes time and again. The goalkeeping issues will have frustrated the Selhurst Park faithful for years now and considering the financial might of sides in the Premier League, this summer needs to be a big one on that front.

Clearly, Palace need a strong goalkeeper to continue their march up the table and, with that in mind, here are TWO such options.

Jack Butland

The Stoke City goalkeeper’s done the best he could to help them gain promotion, yet wasn’t rewarded for his superb work in between the posts.

The towering Butland’s also fallen out of order in the England national team rankings due to playing in the Championship and will surely want a move to the Premier League soon. Indeed, He’s kept 12 clean-sheets, while averaging 2.7 saves per game, saving Stoke from doom time and again to prove his calibre as a top-quality keeper.

Someone capable of manning the goal in Croydon for years to come, this would be a very smart signing indeed.

Nick Pope

The young Burnley man’s struggling to get an appearance, even after recovering from injury.

Indeed, Pope can’t seem to get a place ahead of the brilliant Tom Heaton but is simply too talented to stay out.

With that in mind, he should move in the summer and with his fantastic shot-stopping skills, could thrive at Palace. Pope kept 11 clean-sheets in the league last season, and with his composed demeanour, the Eagles could exponentially improve their defensive record.

West Ham fans react as Marko Arnautovic fails fitness test

[ad_pod ]

West Ham were without Marko Arnautovic for Monday night’s clash with Liverpool after the Austrian failed a late fitness test, meaning that Javier Hernandez deputised up front for the Hammers.

Arnautovic was at the centre of West Ham’s January transfer business as a move to China was on the cards throughout – Shanghai SIPG plotted a £35m move for the forward but he remains in claret and blue.

The 29-year-old has netted eight goals and chalked up two assists in all competitions as he looks to fire the Irons to a respectable finish in the Premier League.

Who is West Ham’s worst ever signing? Check out the video below for a pretty strong candidate for the dubious honour…

An outlay of around £100m saw the likes of Felipe Anderson and Issa Diop arrive at the London Stadium in the summer and the former has struck up a dangerous partnership with Arnautovic – the perfect blend of pace, power and skill.

West Ham don’t quite look the same without the former Stoke man in the lineup – although that didn’t stop them from taking a point from Liverpool on Monday night – and were keen to bring in someone last month who could potentially replace Arnautovic but a swoop for Celta Vigo hitman Maxi Gomez didn’t quite cross the line.

Despite Arnautovic pledging his allegiances to the Hammers – for now, at least – the fans were quick to question his failure of the fitness test on Monday. Here’s a look at how they reacted to the news on Twitter…

Yarmolenko injury update gives West Ham more reason to be optimistic over season’s climax

West Ham will be looking to build on their recent 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United and finish the season strongly as the 2018/19 campaign draws closer to its conclusion.

And the return of numerous absentees including Andriy Yarmolenko could help the Hammers to do just that.

The Breakdown

Football.London reports the Ukrainian winger has a slim chance of returning before the end of the season following the Achilles injury he picked up last October in a development that could be massive for West Ham.

After a slow start to life at the London Stadium, Yarmolenko really started to make an impact down that right-hand side.

He was devastating in wins against Everton and Manchester United with his ability to cut in from there with his left foot before firing away, showing everyone why Manuel Pellegrini was desperate for his signature.

During that period, the 29-year-old was arguably West Ham’s best player, even above the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Felipe Anderson.

Yarmolenko was outperforming the latter, who has been in excellent form since the festive part of the season, giving evidence of just how much technical ability he has.

If the east London club can get the Ukraine international up and running again before the end of the campaign, it could prove to go a long way as they look to secure a seventh place finish in the Premier League.

Phil Hay casts doubt on Bielsa and Radrizzani’s futures at Leeds

[ad_pod ]

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, prominent Leeds United pundit Phil Hay has given his verdict on what the future holds for manager Marcelo Bielsa and owner Andrea Radrizzani at Elland Road.

What he said

In a Q&A section of the aforementioned podcast, Hay was asked by a fan whether he thought Bielsa and Radrizzani would stick with the Whites if they fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.

On the subject of the Argentine coach’s future, Hay said: “I don’t think Bielsa would stay for another year in the Championship. If it [promotion] doesn’t happen I can’t see him being here next season.”

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

As for Italian majority owner Radrizzani, he said: “he consistently says he has a limited shelf life in the Championship and doesn’t want to lose a fortune…He’s always been fairly honest about that and I’ve had the gut feeling that it wouldn’t be a long stint here if Leeds didn’t make it to the Premier League…it’s a fair assumption that he could leave.”

A matter of urgency

Promotion to the top flight is still very much on the agenda for Leeds this season. They are in the thick of the Championship title race, along with Norwich City and Sheffield United. Leeds have also led the division for much of this campaign.

Falling short of promotion this season would be hard to take for fans. However, the loss of Bielsa as a result would arguably constitute an even greater disappointment.

Since his appointment in the summer, the 63-year-old has utterly transformed the Yorkshire club. Having made relatively few signings, he has taken a squad that finished 13th last season and turned them into title contenders who play scintillating football and give chances to promising youth academy prospects.

If Hay’s instincts that Leeds would lose Bielsa and Radrizzani if they missed out on promotion are correct, then the need to secure a return to the top flight this season becomes more urgent than ever.

Leeds fans react as Gary Rowett doubts their chances of promotion

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to react after former Stoke and Derby boss Gary Rowett doubted their chances of finishing in the automatic promotion places, whilst speaking on Sky Sports’ EFL Matters.

Rowett, who was sacked by Stoke earlier in the campaign with the pre-season promotion favourites languishing in mid-table, said: “I’m not sure they will be,” when asked if Marcelo Bielsa’s side will end up in the Championship top two.

“They didn’t have a great opportunity to strengthen in this last window and if you look they’ve got a really young side, which you can applaud them for, they’ve got an incredible energy.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

“But when you’re a team that relies on that energy so much, you wonder whether they can maintain it.”

Leeds have lost four of their last six games having previously sat at the top of the table, and the 44-year-old’s comments have sparked a reaction from a number of the club’s fans on Twitter…

Signing this Italian ace would ease the pressure for Harry Kane and Spurs

Spurs continue to trundle along nicely in the Premier League and remain in the title picture despite a host of bad injuries and a lack of spending in recent times.

Their new stadium is almost ready for it’s grand opening, and it’s certainly an exciting time to be a Spurs fan under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino.

However, we at the Tavern think the club do need some help up top, and we think they need to be making big moves in the summer to bring in some fresh faces.

That’s why we think they should make a move to sign Lazio forward Ciro Immobile, who has once again been in fine form for the Rome based club, firing in the goals once again to prove himself as one of the most lethal strikers on the continent when he is at his best.

Immobile would provide movement, finishing, and genuine class as back up to Harry Kane, and there’s an argument there to be made that both could form a fine partnership too if given the chance.

While Spurs would need to splash the cash on Immobile if they wanted to secure his signature, he would be value for money, and in a team which is ever improving, he’d even more quality and depth to the attacking aspect of the London club’s play.

If Spurs do want to take the title challenge seriously and make their move, then signing someone like Immobile is the perfect sort of statement to make.

Spurs fans, what do you think? Good signing? Let us know in the comments!

Fans react to Rolando Aarons’ showing for Sheffield Wednesday

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United loanee Rolando Aarons was in action on Monday evening for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls welcomed their local-rivals Sheffield United to Hillsborough for an eagerly-anticipated derby, but the game was a cagey affair which failed to entertain in the manner which many had hoped it would.

There were some fleeting moments of creativity and attacking inspiration, though, and Aarons was cited by his manager Steve Bruce as the one player who showed any promise of forcing a breakthrough.

The praise for the 23-year-old’s showing extended well beyond his manager’s verdict as supporters also took to Twitter to offer their compliments.

For Aarons the fixture represented something of a turning point, with Bruce’s decision to play him from the outset handing him a third straight Championship start for the first time in his career.

Injury problems have blighted the former Bristol City trainee’s career so far, but the fact the recently-appointed Wednesday boss had enough faith in his ability to start him in such a high-magnitude fixture suggests that he may have turned a corner in his development.

Here’s how fans reacted to Aarons’ performance in the Steel City derby:
