Transfer Focus: A Benkovic return to Celtic would make fans forget all about Boyata

[ad_pod ]

Filip Benkovic has admitted his future next season is uncertain, refusing to rule out a return to Celtic, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s he said?

While there’s definitely been hits and misses when it comes to loans at Celtic it can’t be denied that it has allowed the club access to a quality of player that otherwise wouldn’t be at the club.

The £13m Benkovic definitely falls into that category, delighting supporters this season with solid defensive displays in the Hoops’ backline.

Due to return to parent club Leicester City this summer for assessment by Brendan Rodgers, the player has admitted this week he doesn’t know what his future holds.

He has loved his time at Celtic, which has culminated in being called up to the Croatian national team for the first time, something he reckons the club have played a instrumental role in.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said:

“I honestly believe there are other players who are more deserving of a call-up than me, but I have been waiting for my chance for a while.

“I’ve had a really successful year at Celtic and I have to thank them for the positive things they have done for me this year which has led to the call-up.

“I can’t talk about what club I will be at next year because nothing is known yet and might not be for some time, probably only after all my international duties this summer.

“But all I can say is that I have really enjoyed my time at Celtic, I have had some great moments here, I have a successful season, enjoyed my football and I will never regret it.”

Clearly the door has been left open for a potential Glasgow return, but will the stars align for a deal to happen?

Do Celtic have a chance of signing him again?

Leicester boss Rodgers told The Daily Record earlier this month that if Benkovic goes out on loan again this summer then he’d want it to be to Celtic, so the chance of being part of the club’s nine-in-a-row push is strong.

Rodgers has four defenders already at the club and it’ll all be about what kind of impact the Croatian can make in pre-season.

On the Hoops side of things, the club seem keen on making a move for him, with the player himself revealing to The Scottish Sun he’s been told there is interest.

What if Celtic were to actually fail in their bid for the ‘treble treble’? A Celtic fan dicsusses in the video below…

How much do Celtic need him?

Having just lost first-pick defender Dedryck Boyata to Hertha Berlin, Celtic are in serious need of quality defensive additions in the upcoming transfer window and re-signing Benkovic would quickly make Hoops supporters forget all about the Belgian.

Benkovic, Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer is a solid centre-back three that could do with another to provide back-up.

If Benkovic does not return, it’ll likely require serious investment from the club to replace his presence.

What about Mbappe? Newcastle fans aren’t happy with Mooy links

[ad_pod ]

The Evening Chronicle have compiled a list of potential Newcastle United transfer targets, and the inclusion of Aaron Mooy has really got fans talking.

The Magpies will almost certainly need new signings in the middle third this summer, as three first team midfielders could leave the club.

Mo Diame will be out of contract, Isaac Hayden is expected to depart to be closer to his family, while Jonjo Shelvey could leave in search of regular playing time.

With that in mind, it is no surprise to see the Chronicle’s list of targets include Mooy, as well as James McCarthy and Joao Mario.

According to the report, Benitez and Newcastle have admired the Australian international for quite some time.

He scored seven times and added four assists across two Premier League seasons with Huddersfield, and certainly has the work rate and energy required to play in a Benitez midfield.

Fans on Twitter aren’t too fond though, mainly due to the rumours of a big-money takeover, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Spurs should give up on reported target Ceballos after mixed messages

[ad_pod ]

Dani Ceballos has issued mixed messages over his future at Real Madrid after being linked with Tottenham Hotspur, per Onda Cero via Marca.

What’s the word?

El Des Marque reported in May that Spurs are “the main player” in the hunt to secure the signature of the midfielder.

However, he has now said that he has a lengthy contract at the Spanish club, of which manager Zinedine Zidane has reminded him, and that he does not expect to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

He said: “Zidane was very clear with me. I’ve accepted his explanations.

“I have a contract with a very high release clause.

“I have four years on my contract and I want to succeed at Real Madrid.”

But, in the same interview, Ceballos has outlined his conditions for an exit from the club.

He added: “If I leave I want to play for a team where I feel important.

“I want to show that I can compete at any team in Europe.

“I’m a young player who wants to succeed so I don’t want to have another year without playing.”

A thorny issue

This looks like a complicated deal for Spurs to do.

His release clause stands at €500m (£444.1m) and, while Real are unlikely to demand a figure of such a magnitude, his current deal runs until 2023.

The club are almost certain to ensure that they receive the highest possible fee for a player who has yet to reach his peak, then.

He made 34 appearances in all competitions this season and Real are not exactly known for letting their hottest prospects leave for negligible fees.

Spurs do need midfield reinforcements this summer but this deal may well be beyond their reach.

There are other targets out there – Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele immediately spring to mind – and perhaps they should focus on them instead.

The Chalkboard: Jack Ross should’ve played Will Grigg alongside Charlie Wyke

[ad_pod ]

It was a very, very tough game to watch if you hold Sunderland Football Club close to your heart.

Apart from the jubilation of a 5th-minute mix-up between Naby Sarr and Dillon Phillips that handed the Black Cats an early lead, almost the entirety of the remaining minutes were the footballing equivalent of watching paint dry.

Jack Ross’ side simply couldn’t string any decent attacks together, relying on the physical presence of Charlie Wyke up top to conjure something up in the final third.

One thing that Ross probably didn’t expect to see was Krystian Bielik in the form of his life.

Sunderland fans have suffered a lot of heartache over the years but one fan manages to pick his ultimate low in the video below…

The on-loan Arsenal centre-back was handed the Man of the Match award by Sky, and absolutely dominated Wyke and then Will Grigg after the Northern Irishman entered the fray.

Bielik won four aerial duels, made three interceptions and also made three clearances against the Black Cats; he was a man possessed.

What could Ross have done about the Pole’s heroics, you ask?

Well, it was all too easy for Bielik up against just Wyke as a lone striker. All the defender had to do was get a toe in first or head the ball away and Wyke was left helpless, with no one around to snap up the second ball.

Ross should’ve either played Grigg alongside Wyke from the off to give Bielik and co more to think about, or he should have at least seen how the game was turning out and brought the former Wigan man on earlier to partner the No.9, maybe even at half-time.

Grigg’s presence up top, specifically his expert movement in and around the box, would’ve caused all sorts of problems for the Charlton backline as they would have had more to think about than just winning aerial duels.

Instead, it was like taking candy from a baby for Bielik up against Wyke, who was trying way too hard to simply win a header at Wembley, let alone find the back of the net; anyone with a brain could’ve seen he needed some support up there.

Pundit View: Mark Wilson thinks Rangers can strengthen defence with Scottish Premiership duo

[ad_pod ]

Clyde 1 Superscoreboard pundit Mark Wilson believes Rangers should be seriously considering signing John Souttar and Greg Taylor this summer, speaking on Thursday’s edition of the radio show.

What’s he said?

Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard has made it something of a priority in recent transfer windows to sign up the best talent available in the Scottish Premiership with deals for Glen Kamara, Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones completed this year alone.

With defensive reinforcements needed ahead of the new season, former Dundee United and Celtic man Wilson reckons Souttar and Taylor should be the next in line for a move to Glasgow.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, the 34-year-old said:

I’ve got to say if John Souttar is offered to go to Rangers and Hearts accept it, I can’t see John Souttar having a problem.

He’s wanting to stay in the international fold and playing European football and playing beside better players like he would at Rangers and under Steven Gerrard would improve him.

Greg Taylor I’ve been a big fan of for a good while now. Good fit, getting international recognition now and it’s a position that Rangers need to fill.

You’ve got Barisic there who looked decent but again you can’t get him on the park.

Flanagan, a right footer at left back, that upsets the balance a bit. So I think if you brought those two in, they would be very good signings. It’s whether Killie or Hearts would let them go in the cheap.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Shopping for Souttar

There’s no doubt that Hearts stopper John Souttar is one of the stand-out defensive talents in the division outside of the two Glasgow giants.

Still just 22-years-old, he has excellent experience for his age both at Tynecastle and with Dundee United, where he made his senior breakthrough as a teenager playing alongside the likes of Andrew Robertson and Stuart Armstrong.

He’d be an excellent option to compete with Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic and definitely someone the Gers should be looking at if he is available this summer.

Taylor transfer

Likewise Greg Taylor has caught the eye of many in the Scottish Premiership over the last 12 months, finding himself nominated for the Scottish Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year award and subsequently getting called up to the most recent Scotland squad.

Mark Wilson is right to suggest that Rangers need another option at left-back too, and signing up the young homegrown 21-year-old could be an inspired transfer and one that pays off massively in the future.

The radio pundit has picked out two dynamite potential deals for Rangers to make here – will the club be making any bids for them this summer?

Spurs fans make their picks between Ndombele and Lo Celso

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans want to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon instead of Real Betis’ Giovani Lo Celso.

The club have identified both players as targets, per the London Evening Standard.

Ndombele is valued at €80m (£70.7m) by Lyon, per Le10Sport, while Lo Celso has a release clause in his contract in excess of £80m.

Neither player, then, is likely to come cheap as Spurs look to secure their first signing since January 2018, when Lucas Moura arrived from PSG.

Fans, obviously, have been sent into something approaching a frenzy by the continued speculation, with the club finally set to break their transfer duck.

And they have been left debating the possibility of only signing one midfield player this summer, with a question posed on Twitter; would supporters prefer Ndombele or Lo Celso?

The majority of respondents have answered with the former, who has emerged as a truly elite talent at Lyon in recent seasons.

Liverpool fans left confused after Nicolas Pepe transfer update

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool’s pursuit of winger Nicolas Pepe has been quashed by Melissa Reddy of ESPN, who has said that the Reds have told her that concrete talks between Lille and them were pure lies and had made the club furious.

Contrary to a report in France, ESPN claim that Michael Edwards personally called the French side up, informing them that they have no interest in signing the player this summer.

It was news that left Liverpool fans extremely confused as they reacted on Twitter to the speculation surrounding the Ivory Coast international.

One simply questioned why the club would get in contact to say they didn’t want to sign a player whilst another queried why the Reds would be angry about things.

A further supporter brought Virgil van Dijk into the discussion, another player the club revealed they had no interest in before going onto sign.

One individual was left so perplexed that they suggested Liverpool just wouldn’t sign anyone this summer.

Pepe was in outstanding form for Lille last term, finding the net 22 times whilst also picking up 11 assists in 38 games.

Here’s the best of the reaction.
