  • WHAT HAPPENED?

England ace Walker reportedly had an affair with Goodman, and went on to have two children with her, despite being in a long-term relationship with Annie Kilner. The 33-year-old has had four kids with Kilner and in recent times Goodman has aimed pot shots at the City right-back. The latest one involves the influencer taking to social media to outline how it is hard for her to respond to her children's question, 'Where is my daddy?'.

    WHAT LAURYN GOODMAN SAID

In an Instagram post, she wrote: "Yeah been a tough one but I found a solution. Some may not agree with it but I'd rather my children know it's not because of them. That it's the other person's issue. So that they don't think there's something wrong with them and grow to have a complex.

"I simply say, 'Daddy's at football working and remember he's had to go back to school to learn how to be a good daddy.' I then say 'He might learn one day but for now, that's where he is.' Obviously, he talks about him playing football etc but that's fine. Had a few 'Where is my daddy?' and 'I love my daddy' outbursts but I think it's also an age thing as other friends going through it."

  • THE GOSSIP

Earlier this year, Walker admitted he made "idiot choices and idiot decisions" over having a 'secret child' and how he treated wife Annie.

He told in January: "What I’ve done is horrible and I take full responsibility. I made idiot choices and idiot decisions. I can’t begin to think or imagine what Annie is going through. I’ve tried to ask her but there’s pain and hurt. The man that’s meant to love, care and be there for her, did this. There have been days in this ordeal where I’ve just wanted to curl up in a ball and go to sleep. The only person to blame is me. I have roles and responsibilities that I’m aware of and I’ve made stupid choices. But I need to own up to my mistakes — I owe it to everyone. My actions have caused a lot of pain to a lot of people. I’m sorry because, as a family, this isn’t meant to happen.”

Aside from off-field matters, Walker will likely feature for City in their final Premier League game of the season on Sunday when they host West Ham. Victory at the Etihad will secure a fourth-straight league title.

Middle-order batsmen lead Western Australia to strong position

Josh Philippe, Hilton Cartwright and Sam Whiteman hit half-centuries to take visiting side to a healthy total

The Report by Daniel Brettig12-Mar-2019Australia Test captain Tim Paine claimed three catches on his return to Tasmanian ranks after a one-match rest, but Western Australia’s middle order guided the visitors to a useful total with some panache after being sent in to bat in the Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.Conditions appeared highly favourable to the Tigers’ seam bowlers, not least Jackson Bird, and though the sometime Test paceman did claim three wickets including that of Cameron Bancroft with a perfectly pitched delivery taking the outside edge, the Warriors could end the day satisfied to have avoided the mayhem witnessed in Brisbane (20 wickets in the day) and in Sydney (17).While no member of the WA batting order went on to a century, Sam Whiteman, Hilton Cartwright, Josh Philippe and D’Arcy Short – he of the Hobart Hurricanes – all made sturdy contributions while scoring at a considerable clip, with no fewer than 43 boundaries struck across 96 overs.Riley Meredith’s pace brought a pair of picture book dismissals as the Dukes ball swung all day, and when Philippe dragged a wide Bird delivery on to his stumps it appeared possible the Tigers would be batting before stumps. But Joel Paris and Matthew Kelly dug in, allowing the WA innings to eke into a second day.

"Huge blow" – Pundit reacts to Leeds United exit update shared by Phil Hay

Leeds United are in a good place in the Championship to put themselves well on course for an immediate return to the top flight. With plenty more football still to come, they could even sneak into the automatic promotion spots ahead of either Leicester City or Ipswich Town in what would be a big success for Daniel Farke.

It's not all good news, however, with the Whites set to suffer yet another departure after bidding farewell to a number of stars during the transfer window. When next summer comes around, reports suggest that they'll be waving goodbye to one particular player, who remains on course to leave.

Leeds United transfer news

Leeds deserve credit for the way that they've managed to transition from the Premier League back in the Championship, having lost the likes of Rodrigo and Tyler Adams. It would have been easy to fall apart before Farke even had the chance to rebuild, but instead, Leeds, under new owners the 49ers Enterprises, welcomed fitting replacements in the form of players such as Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon.

It looks as though they'll have to repeat that transfer trick to replace Cody Drameh long-term next summer, with the full-back's contract coming to an end. According to Phil Hay, the defender, currently out on loan with Birmingham City, has no intention to sign a new deal at Elland Road, with the Blues having the option to make a move permanent.

Former Luton loanee Cody Drameh.

Reacting to the news, pundit Carlton Palmer described it to Football League World as a "huge blow" for the Whites.

"Cody Drameh, Leeds United's talented right-back who is currently on loan to Birmingham City, has said he will not sign a new contract.

"The 21-year-old is having a fine season with Birmingham, but he will walk away from Leeds in the summer with the club only receiving compensation and not a fee. This in my opinion will be a huge blow for the club.

"Cody played an integral part in Luton getting promoted to the Premier League last season and has showed great promise – he's still only 21 and seemingly with a bright future ahead of him.

"Leeds could be missing out on a player with the potential to be a considerable asset over the years to come as he continues his development."

"Talented" Drameh set for Leeds United exit

It's a shame for Drameh who has never really shone at Elland Road. The right-back is on course to leave the club on a permanent basis in the summer after making just 10 senior appearances for Leeds, despite impressing whilst on loan at promoted Luton Town last season. Currently on loan at Birmingham City, the 21-year-old has made 12 appearances and even picked up two assists, as he continues to prove those in Yorkshire wrong.

Sending Drameh out on loan once again, Leeds have opted for teenager Archie Gray at right-back this season, with the midfielder turned full-back enjoying a breakthrough campaign. That doesn't mean that his on-loan teammate hasn't been impressing elsewhere, however, as Drameh's stats prove.

Arsenal could finally unlock Havertz by signing "effortless" £35m target

Arsenal could look to bolster their squad options in January, with a host of talent already being linked with a move to the Emirates.

While Mikel Arteta’s side have made a stellar start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, sitting one point from the summit after 12 games played, the signs are there that the title-denying cracks from last term are already showing.

Lack of squad depth was a significant factor to the Gunners not being able to win their first league title since 2004, becoming the first side to lead the pack for as long as 248 days and not be crowned champions.

Injuries to key members of the squad caused a clear imbalance of quality in the XI available to the manager, and despite spending over £200m on new acquisitions during the summer window, the options on show are already looking stretched.

Last time out against Burnley, three talents from the academy ranks were named on the bench to complete the squad due to injury pressures and lack of options, reinforcing just how vital additional reinforcements are in January.

Luckily, the north Londoners are said to be admirers of a list of talent ahead of the opening of the winter market, in signings that could determine Arsenal’s stance in the title race going forward.

Arsenal January transfer targets

If the targets that the Gunners are speculated to be eyeing are anything to go by, it looks as though Arteta and Edu are hoping to bolster the squad’s options in attack in January.

Earlier this month, a report from Football Transfers linked Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic to the Emirates, claiming that the Serbian is the managers ‘preferred’ striker target this winter.

The report adds that the north Londoners were interested in the 23-year-old last January prior to his €80m move to Turin, with the talisman still said to be on Arsenal’s radar.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt.

Elsewhere, another attacking option has been identified by The Mirror, with the Gunners said to be ready to battle Newcastle United for the signature of Borussia Dortmund dynamo Julian Brandt.

The versatile attacker has a current market value of €40m (£35m), making him an affordable asset for Arteta to target and a player who could strengthen the squad in more ways than his own individual ability.

Why Julian Brandt would be a good signing for Arsenal

Once lauded for his “effortless” level of “elegance” in his playing style by U23 scout Antonio Mango, Brandt has been one of the most notably consistent talents in the German top flight since his emergence in 2014.

Signed that year from Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen captured the signature of the versatile forward at the age of 17, giving him a platform to show his worth at senior level.

It didn’t take long for the Bremen-born ace to do so, as he dazzled during his five-and-a-half-year stay at the BayArena, which leads into why he could be the missing piece to one of Arteta’s puzzles.

At Leverkusen, the German was deployed primarily in his favoured position of central attacking midfield alongside none other than Kai Havertz, where the duo formed a spectacular partnership to cement themselves as Leverkusen’s poster boys.

The official Bundesliga site dubbed the duo as an 'unstoppable' combination, assuming Havertz the role of goalscorer, and Brandt the creator, with both talents left to enchant in the side’s formerly favoured 4-3-3 formation.

In the 2018/19 season, the partnership was fully flourishing, in which Havertz netted 17 goals and recorded four assists, while his counterpart netted seven goals and provided 14 assists, leaving the duo responsible for 42 of Leverkusen’s 69 league goals.

kai-havertz-julian-brandt

Since leaving the comforts of his homeland, the Arsenal forward hasn’t hit the levels he showed in the Bundesliga in the Premier League, having scored only 20 goals in 103 appearances since his arrival in 2020.

When revising the partnership and perfect balance between Brandt and Havertz in midfield, the question could be asked as to whether the 27-year-old could be the key to unlocking the former Chelsea dud’s form at the Emirates.

Julian Brandt’s style of play

Possessing the ability to play on either flank and in central midfield, the Dortmund ace is well-equipped to act as the creator in any side when sat behind the front line.

Scouting site Breaking the Lines identified the playmaker’s strengths as being his ability to play one-touch passes, his spacial awareness in midfield, his defensive contributions and of course, his creativity.

Over the past year, Brandt’s average of 0.75 goal-creating actions per 90 ranks him in the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe's top five leagues, reinforcing just how impactful his presence can be in the final third, via FBref.

Most impressively, the 45-cap German international, ranks in the top 3% of the same demographic for his stellar rate of 3.17 key passes per 90 over the past year, portraying the frequency of his creative stroke.

How Julian Brandt compares to Arsenal’s other attackers

While reminiscing on the power pairing that was Brandt and Havertz in Germany, it’s difficult to imagine just how well the German would fit in at Arsenal based on his compatibility to Arteta’s £65m acquisition alone.

When comparing the 27-year-old’s statistics this season so far in the Bundesliga, it’s clear to see just how efficient his talents are in relation to the numbers obtained by some of Arsenal’s attackers.

As portrayed in the table above, Brandt dominates some of the north Londoners’ best talents in the final third on a per 90 basis, reinforcing how strong of a signing he could be if added to the managers side in the winter.

In signing the Dortmund sensation – who has 11 goals and assists in just 16 games in all competitions this season – Arteta could not only bolster his options going forward, but also have the tools to potentially reignite Havertz’s form and introduce healthy competition to those comfortably in the XI.

Gareth Southgate is the ideal candidate for Man Utd: England boss' focus on young players and team values can revitalise Red Devils

The Three Lions' manager has led a cultural reset with a declining national institution and can do the same at Old Trafford

Gareth Southgate may not want to discuss his future, but everyone else does. The England manager will this week attempt to keep the focus on his side's friendly matches with Brazil and Belgium amid their final preparations for Euro 2024, but attention on what he will do next is only going to grow.

Southgate has not committed to England beyond the summer in a bid to "remove pressure" from his players as they try to win a first major trophy in 58 years, but the uncertainty has inevitably raised questions about whether he is eyeing up another job. And, national-team manager aside, there is no greater job in English football than taking charge of Manchester United.

In the last few days, Southgate has become the favourite to become the next manager of United following a report that new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is confident of luring the England boss to Old Trafford. Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues are reportedly still not convinced that Erik ten Hag is the right man to lead the project forward, even after the stunning 4-3 win over Liverpool to reach the FA Cup semi-finals.

A fair few United fans might agree with that assessment given the team are sixth in the Premier League and have lost 16 matches this season. Not many, however, will be setting off fireworks if Southgate is indeed announced as Ten Hag's eventual successor.

But if you take a step back and consider everything Southgate has achieved with England after inheriting the national team when it was at its lowest ebb, there are plenty of reasons why he is the ideal manager to give the flailing Red Devils a reboot.

    Ashworth connection

If Southgate were to accept the offer to take charge at United, he would be working with key figures who he knows well and with whom there is a huge level of mutual respect. The England manager has known United's likely next sporting director Dan Ashworth for more than a decade, dating back to their time together at England's headquarters.

Ashworth was appointed as England's director of elite development in 2013, the same time Southgate had been named head coach of the Under-21 team. Working in tandem with Southgate and head of development teams Matt Crocker, Ashworth helped draft the England DNA document, which became the blueprint for a lot of success that the men's and women's team would go on to have.

Southgate praised Ashworth for the role he had played in England reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018, while Ashworth, who has agreed to work at United but has been placed on gardening leave by Newcastle, has described Southgate as "an exceptional leader“ and praised his people skills.

"He’s got a really good understanding of getting the best out of the players and staff," he said. "So what’s ended up happening is that Gareth has brought together a way of working for the players and the staff that means it is one big group of people."

    On board with Brailsford

Southgate has also got a lot in common with INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, who was in close contact with the FA in the aftermath of the sacking of Sam Allardyce. Brailsford, who had huge success with Team Sky and British Cycling, was invited to become part of the FA's technical advisory board.

Brailsford and Southgate also connected at the P8 Leaders conferences, where the mastermind of Team Sky's multiple Tour de France wins was a regular speaker.

“Gareth Southgate was very interested in Dave’s advice on how you keep everyone in a World Cup squad motivated, including those who aren’t playing," Sir Michael Barber told . "Team Sky had almost 30 riders, but only nine, and then it was eight, of them could ride the Tour. His real skill was making sure everyone in the team felt like they were contributing to the goal of winning the race. Gareth lapped it up and took detailed notes."

Brailsford and Southgate share a belief that you can learn a lot from other sports. The England manager and his staff have borrowed ideas from the NFL and NBA, incorporating strategies to improve set-piece routines and game management. Southgate explained in 2018: "We can try different things that work. If you keep always doing what you've always done, you get the same results."

Brailsford expanded his portfolio to work on the sub-two-hour marathon with INEOS, while also dipping his toes into Formula One and sailing before taking a keen interest in football. According to , Brailsford and Southgate have watched a Super Bowl together and maintain contact in a Whatsapp group featuring other guests at the P8 events.

    'No good culture'

Southgate's interest in what Brailsford had to say on how to keep players who did not always play interested is intriguing, as many United managers have struggled to foster any sense of team unity in the 11 years since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.

Ten Hag has tried harder than most, taking a ruthless approach when Cristiano Ronaldo left a match early and banishing Jadon Sancho from the squad when he refused to apologise for calling the manager out on social media. "Strict lines is what the club asked me because there was no good culture before I entered last season," the Dutchman explained in September.

However, the manager's decision to publicly question Sancho's commitment has been criticised in some quarters, and it certainly created a messy image of the club from the outside. It is difficult to imagine Southgate dealing with a similar situation in the same way.

Ten Hag has tried to impose a top-down regime of discipline and rigorous physical training, but with mixed results, and not just on the pitch. Marcus Rashford's big night out in Belfast just hours before a training session painted a picture of a squad that does not fully respect the manager, despite his efforts.

He is far from the only United manager to struggle with a dressing room lacking in characters. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that a number of players refused to be captain for certain matches and did not have the guts to tell the manager themselves. He also claimed some players stopped running for him in his final match in charge against Watford.

    Taking on cliques

Southgate could be the ideal person to tackle United's bad habits. Before he became England coach in 2016, the team was beset with similar problems to those that have plagued United of late. But he has taken a different approach to Ten Hag, trying to bring players with him rather than imposing his ideas on them.

He has overseen a cultural reset and created a far happier camp than before. Gone are the club divisions that were rife during the so-called 'Golden Generation' team of the 2006 World Cup and other England sides of the past. He has replaced it with a culture of unity.

"He's created an environment where they all enjoy going," former England U20s coach Paul Simpson told . "We've got away from a few years ago where it seemed players didn't want to play for the national team. I wasn't there for it, but they talk about little cliques and a bad feeling between the groups and stuff like that, that was not something I ever saw in my time."

Grant Stewart five-for gives Middlesex pink-ball nightmares

ScorecardGrant Stewart, Kent’s burly Western Australian seamer, took five top-order wickets under the Canterbury lights as Middlesex collapsed to 54 for 9 in another setback for their promotion push.Stewart, only playing thanks to the absence of Matt Henry (rested ahead of Saturday’s Royal London Cup final) and Darren Stevens (who struggles to pick up the pink ball), had taken four wickets in as many games in his first-class career to date when he took the new pink ball; two hours later, he had his maiden five-wicket haul. The pink Dukes, thought to hold together better than its Kookaburra equivalent, swung late in the fabled ‘twilight period’ after the sun disappeared behind the Frank Woolley Stand. Stewart jagged the ball back into the left-handers, and moved it sharply away from the right-handers’ edges, ripping the heart out of Middlesex’s top six in their response to Kent’s 241 earlier in the day.

Malan questions pink ball policy

Dawid Malan, Middlesex captain, questioned the use of pink Kookaburra ball in Division One and a pink Dukes ball in Division Two, contending that Division Two batsmen potentially faced a much tougher challenge against the swinging ball in twilight.
“I can’t quite understand why the two divisions are using different balls.” he said. “It’s still county cricket and we have guys out here with aspirations to play international cricket, so to have different balls seems strange as we don’t do that in red-ball cricket.
“It doesn’t make a lot of sense. It was doing so much at the end there that we actually did quite well to nick a few.”

Middlesex’s batsmen came and went in a hurry. First, Sam Robson’s horror season continued. Four years ago last week, the right-hander made his England debut in the Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka; here, he pushed apologetically at a Stewart away-swinger and he failed to pass 20 for the ninth time in 11 innings this campaign. When the umpires took the players off soon after, with the low sun behind Stewart’s arm rendering the ball impossible to see, it looked as though the Canterbury faithful were set for a floodlit farce: the lights were on, but nobody was in the middle. But after the resumption, with the shadows lengthening, Stewart steamed in with menace and purpose. Next to go was Max Holden, stunned that a ball pitched well outside his off stump had fizzed back in, before Dawid Malan – who struggled against the pink ball in England’s day-night Ashes Test last winter – edged a similar delivery to Sean Dickson at slip for a duck. At 19 for 3, Kent were on the charge.Stewart soon had two more. Stevie Eskinazi, the only man to make double-figures in Middlesex’s effort, prodded at a ball which hit the seam, before debutant George Scott was cleaned up. Harry Podmore’s dismissal of Hilton Cartwright was sandwiched between Stewart’s fourth and fifth, and Ivan Thomas skittled James Harris to leave Middlesex reeling at 54 for 7.Calum Haggett got in on the act in the penultimate over, as John Simpson edged through to the keeper, before bowling Ravi Patel with the day’s final ball: the collapse was six wickets for 10 runs, and Kent were in dreamland. The visitors had hoped that last week’s remarkable turnaround at Leicester would prove the catalyst for change in a season that had promised so much and delivered so little; but with the prospect of another day in the heat looming over them, already it will take a monumental effort to save this game.Grant Stewart celebrates his maiden first-class wicket•Getty Images

For Kent, the final session completely changed their outlook after they had been frustratingly short of their best for the previous two.In his first Championship appearance of the season, following an underwhelming stint with the Chennai Super Kings and some drinks-carrying for England, Sam Billings won the toss and chose to bat. It looked a poor decision: Tim Murtagh and Harris started well with the new ball, the latter trapping Dickson leg before in the first half-hour.But the innings was one of loose shots, with the in-form pair of Heino Kuhn and Joe Denly both failing to kick on after getting in. Billings himself led the way in this department: after a high-elbow, hold-the-pose drive through extra cover for four before lunch and a kiss-the-surface punch down the ground off Murtagh, the runs dried up for him after the interval.”Go on then,” Murtagh’s fourth-stump line said to the captain, “do something stupid.” Billings duly obliged, and chipped to short cover for 17. Dragging himself off the field to the members’ silence, he could not have envisioned the scene four hours later: Billings barely able to conceal his Chesire-cat grin, as Stewart led the sides off with Kent in complete control.

SLC shambles lead to postponement of Lankan Premier League

The Lankan Premier League (LPL) will be scrapped this year, effectively because no functional board exists at SLC to organise the tournament. Russel Arnold, the tournament director, is understood to have had little support or direction from the few administrators remaining at SLC, over the past few weeks. He announced on Twitter that the LPL was “postponed”. The tournament was due to begin mid-August.This is the third time a showpiece T20 tournament proposed by SLC has been cancelled, out of four attempts. SLC had thrice announced major T20 tournaments between 2011 and 2013, but actually only hosted an event in 2012 – the unpopular and unloved Sri Lankan Premier League. Since then SLC’s T20 tournaments have been purely domestic affairs. Many of these competitions have been hastily put together, and were of modest quality, such as the 23-team event earlier this year. There have been questions over whether a small market such as Sri Lanka can sustain a showpiece T20 competition like the BPL or PSL, but it is not commercial concerns that forced this particular cancellation. The tournament had been in doubt since May 31, when SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala – the man who proposed the LPL – and his board were dissolved, following the expiration of their elected term. When no fresh elections were held to replace or reinstate the outgoing administrators, the Sri Lanka government stepped in to temporarily run cricket in the country, but there has been little appetite from these temporary administrators to see the LPL through.Unlike CSA’s T20 Global League, which was postponed last year, the LPL had not sold any franchises. In fact the plan had been for SLC to own the six teams for the first two or three seasons, while the tournament gained some momentum. As no commercial partners had been brought on board, no teams had been announced, no auctions or drafts had been held, and little groundwork was completed, the fallout from this cancellation is unlikely to be significant.Sri Lanka players will now be free to play in the Caribbean Premier League, as there is now roughly a month’s free window between South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, which ends on August 14, and the Asia Cup, which begins on September 13.
