Chief executive says club will need help from ECB after “unprecedented” loss of revenue

Lancashire are facing “multimillion pound” losses and will require outside support to cope with the cancellation of the Emirates Old Trafford Test according to their chief executive, Daniel Gidney.Lancashire have promised to reimburse all those who bought tickets or hospitality for the match, while they are exploring their options having hired thousands of temporary staff for the next few days. They’re upset and disappointed but they have been incredibly supportive.”The ECB and Lancashire were in discussions about how they treat temporary staff hired for the game. While the club said they were minded to pay them for at least four days, that was yet to be confirmed. The club also confirmed that, if the Test were to be rescheduled for the 2022 season, they would be very keen to host it.”We have a lot of people who have committed to five days’ work with us,” Gidney said. “We have work through that.”We had built up reserves, but the first six months’ of the pandemic effectively ate through all that. So we’re back to scratch, really. But we’re a resilient club: we’ve been through two world wars and a pandemic. We’ll work our way through this.”

Davies, whose current Bayern Munich contract expires at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, is yet to figure out if he will continue in the Bundesliga or move to Spain and Real Madrid, who have been his long-time admirers. Amid the uncertainty over the player's future, reports that the Bavarian club are reportedly planning to offer the Canadian a new bumper deal that will see him earn €25million (£20m/&25m) per season and the second-highest wage earner in the team after Harry Kane.

Davies knows what the Spanish giants are willing to offer him as wages, which is likely to be less than the Bundesliga side and that they would not enter a bidding war for him. He also operated as the club’s bowling coach for a couple of years until the start of 2019. West Ham United have been dealt a transfer blow with moves for two England internationals now seemingly off, according to new reports.

West Ham summer signings so far

The Hammers and technical director Tim Steidten have made three new signings ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge at the London Stadium. The first to arrive Brazilian teenage winger Luis Guilherme, followed by experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and then the most expensive addition so far in centre-back Max Kilman.

Since then, though, it has been a frustrating period for the Irons, who have been looking to add a new full-back and attacker to Lopetegui’s side. Negotiations have proven to be tough with Aston Villa for centre-forward Jhon Duran, whereas a move to sign Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui has fallen through despite there being an agreement between the two clubs.

Steidten has promised a busy summer in the market when speaking at Lopetegui’s first press conference as West Ham boss earlier in the month, though. “I can’t tell you specifics, but it will be a busy summer for us for sure. The owner and the board have done a really good job over recent years, so we’re in good shape financially. We’re trying to build up the squad. We’re not limiting ourselves to one position – we’re looking at all areas.”

However, now, it looks as if he will be handed more transfer woes in the form of two more defenders.

West Ham transfer update – Kyle Walker-Peters and Fikayo Tomori

Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori have also been heavily linked with moves to London. As we know, the Saints signed midfielder Flynn Downes from West Ham on a permanent transfer and talks were thought to be in advanced talks over Walker-Peters heading the other way.

Now, though, according to Football Insider, a deal to sign Walker-Peters is off with West Ham pulling the plug on any potential move. Talks have collapsed, with the Irons pursuing Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka instead.

Meanwhile, at centre-back, contact was recently made to sign Tomori, who could have ended up partnering Kilman under Lopetegui. However, according to Football Insider again, Tomori has rejected an approach from West Ham as he believes Milan are a “bigger club”.

Both Tomori and Walker-Peters have caps for England at senior level but won’t be moving to the London Stadium by the looks of things in what could come as a frustrating piece of news for the Irons and Lopetegui.

It was by choice with Walker-Peters but have been snubbed by Tomori, so it will be interesting to see who ends up at West Ham, with the club still after two new defenders and an attacker by the looks of things.

Arne Slot will be hoping his first season as manager of Liverpool Football Club can do outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp justice, the legendary German bowing out at the end of last season after a stellar stint at Anfield.

His replacement, former Feyenoord boss Slot, will have a big task on his hands to live up to the legacy. Klopp’s tenure at the Reds saw him lift one each of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, as well as two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Supercup.

Although the 19-time English Champions are yet to make a signing this summer, their new Dutchman at the helm will no doubt be dreaming of lifting the two major prizes next season; the Premier League and the Champions League. Whilst it will be a tough campaign, he has some players in his squad who are game-changers, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

However, recently, they have been linked with another player who could come into the club and have an immediate impact on the side, shoring up the centre of the midfield for the Reds.

Liverpool target Eredivisie midfielder

The player in question here is PSV and Netherlands midfielder Joey Veerman. The 25-year-old has impressed for PSV in recent seasons, and could now be in line to get a major move away from the club this summer.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool 'have their eye on' the defensive midfielder this summer, and could launch a bid as they look to add strength and depth at the base of their midfield, with Wataru Endo currently their only viable option there.

However, the Reds would not be the only club looking to sign Veerman this summer. The report explains that their arch-rivals, Manchester United are also interested in adding him to their squad. He explains that, given the Dutch core building at Old Trafford, it makes sense for the Red Devils to launch a bid as an alternative to doing a deal for Manuel Ugarte.

At this stage, a price for Veerman has not been named, as stated by Anfield Watch earlier this week. However, the 25-year-old is valued at £18.6m by Football Transfers, so could cost anything from that price and upwards.

Why Veerman would be a good signing

Last season, Veerman was one of the best players in the Eredivisie. Not only did he put in some impressive performances in midfield, but he contributed to lots of goals. The 25-year-old played 29 games in the Dutch top flight last term, grabbed five goals and registered a very impressive 16 assists along the way.

Should they bring Veerman into the club this summer, Liverpool might well have finally signed a replacement for long-term number six, Fabinho. The Brazilian played 291 times for the Reds and won both the Premier League and Champions League.

Whilst the pair are somewhat different, with Veerman working better in a double pivot and the Brazilian operating well as a lone number six, it is still a deal that would see them replace the Al-Ittihad man, who they sold 12 months ago for a rumoured £40m.

You can compare their Fbref stats to build a good picture of just how good Veerman is in contrast to Fabinho, whose stats from Liverpool’s title-winning season of 2019/20 will be used in the comparison.

Firstly, when it comes to defensive actions, Fabinho just about edges the Dutchman out. The former Real Madrid man averaged 4.16 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes in 2019/20, compared to 3.32 for Veerman.

However, the Dutch midfielder’s average amount of ball recoveries made per game last season trumped Fabinho’s from the 2019/20 campaign. He averaged 7.21 compared to the former Brazil international’s 6.8 each game.

In terms of on the ball, Veerman’s quality is shown through when looking at his stats. He averages 11.8 progressive passes per 90, compared to just 5.58 by Fabinho each game in 2019/20. Veerman also plays far more key passes per 90, too, with 4.91 compared to just 0.82 for Fabinho in 2019/20.

Here, context must be used, because Liverpool’s more direct style of play under Klopp may well mean that he had less opportunity to make those progressive passes as they got the ball forward quicker.

It seems clear that, in bringing Veerman in, they would be adding a “monster” midfielder with great quality on the ball into their squad, as football analyst Ben Mattinson called him.

Whilst he would need to play in a double pivot to be most effective, with the likes of Endo or Alexis Mac Allister, the Dutchman could be an excellent first addition to Slot’s squad this summer and the man to finally fill Fabinho's void.

Rohit Sharma is all but likely to partner Mayank Agarwal at the top of the order should he be cleared to fly for the Tests in Australia, but he isn’t too fussed over his batting position.”I will tell you the same thing that I have told everyone all this while. I will be happy to bat wherever the team wants me to, but I don’t know if they would change my role as an opener,” Sharma told PTI.Having started his career in the middle order, Sharma transitioned to become a Test opener during India’s home series against South Africa last year and found immediate success. He topped the series charts with 529 runs in four innings, including three centuries.The combined tally of 525 runs between Sharma and Agarwal across both innings of the first Test in Vizag is a national record, bettering the 414 by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan. Along the way, Sharma also became the first Indian to score two centuries in his first Test as an opener, having slammed 176 and 127.After that, he opened just twice in the subsequent series against Bangladesh before an injury ruled him out of India’s most-recent Test series in New Zealand, which they lost 2-0 in February.”I am sure the guys already in Australia must have figured out what are the options when Virat [Kohli] leaves and who are the guys who will open the innings,” he said. “Once I reach there, I will probably have a clearer idea of what’s going to happen.
