England seek World Cup refresh as Kate Cross reveals difficulties of dealing with restrictions

“Still an element of that that might be getting a little bit overlooked from people outside of the cricket environment”

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Mar-2022Kate Cross has warned that the difficulties of being required to live in bio-secure bubbles in order to play cricket “might be getting a little bit overlooked”, as England approach a critical juncture in their World Cup defence out in New Zealand. Though bio-security protocols in the world tournament in New Zealand allow players to eat outdoors within Covid-safety guidelines and even visit beaches, Cross stressed “the need to have your ways of getting away from cricket”.Narrow defeats in their opening two games, against Australia and West Indies, have left England needing to deploy what captain, Heather Knight, called a “knockout mindset” if they are going to progress from the round-robin group stage, starting with a fixture against South Africa – the team they beat in dramatic circumstances at the semi-final stage of the 2017 competition, before going on to lift the trophy at Lord’s.England have had a few days to regroup after a seven-run loss to West Indies in Dunedin, having moved up to the north island for their next three games – South Africa and India in Mount Mauganui, followed by the hosts in Auckland. Cross, who was run-out in unfortunate circumstances after a 61-run stand for the ninth wicket with Sophie Ecclestone had taken England to within sight of victory, said it was important for the players to find ways to get away from the game.Related

“We have had a tough start to the tournament,” Cross said. “I don’t think we can come too far away from saying anything other than that. I think coming here to Mount Maunganui has actually been a really refreshing stage of the tournament for us because we’ve been away for a long time now, obviously, the Ashes on to the start of this tournament. So it was nice to get a little bit of space have a little bit of time off without all the travel days that we’ve been having.”The mood’s good… It would be very easy for us to go into our shells at this point. But we know that we’ve got a lot of improvements to make in order to win these games. And the beauty of it is that we’re only losing them by small margins. So if we can play our best cricket, which I’ve no doubt that we can, then things could very quickly change for us.”It is more than two months since England’s squad travelled halfway around the world for the Ashes, before going straight on to the World Cup. During that time they have had to deal with the tighter restrictions laid down by authorities in Australia and New Zealand – having spent almost two years playing in biosecure bubbles due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”You’ve kind of got the beach on your back doorstep here, it’s a lot more refreshing,” Cross said of their current surroundings. “[But] we still are confined. Obviously we’re confined to our hotels and to not being able to go out to eat in restaurants and stuff, so I think there’s still an element of that that might be getting a little bit overlooked from maybe people outside of the cricket environment who don’t quite understand it. And we’re pretty much two years now that we’ve been in these environments. So it’s very strange as well to think that when we go back home, there’s absolutely no Covid restrictions and there’ll be no testing for it either.”So it is a big part of the game. I think we’ve realised that from having to go through so much of it in the last few years that it is difficult, and you need to have your ways of getting away from cricket and being able to kind of refresh yourself. And like I said, hopefully that’s what Mount Maunganui has done for us in the last couple of days because we’ve had a rare day off, which was very, very nice.”While defeat to Australia, the favourites for the tournament, saw England make the second-highest score batting second in a women’s ODI – and featured Nat Sciver’s scintillating 85-ball 109 not out – there were fewer positives to take from the West Indies game. Afterwards Knight called for an improvement in catching, after England put down seven chances in Dunedin, as well as the team’s death bowling. Both Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole, the World Cup-winning leaders of England’s attack, experienced off days against West Indies, but Cross said there was no doubt about their ability to make a difference when it counts. With five teams above them already on four points or more, that time is approaching fast.”I think we actually bowled better against the West Indies,” she said. “We probably let ourselves down a little bit in the field, which again is going to be something that we’re going to rectify on Monday, and make sure we bring in that energy and look to be positive. I think sometimes when you lose, it’s very easy to go into your shells, especially in a tournament like this where there’s a lot of eyes on you and a lot of scrutiny, but I think if we can still play that really positive brand cricket that we’ve played for so long now, we can stand ourselves in good stead.”As a bowling unit it’s important that we remember why we’ve been so successful in the past 18 months. We might have gone away from those plans a little bit too soon. You’ve got a bowl your best ball for as long as you can really in one-day cricket. But yeah, Katherine and Anya have obviously got a record that speaks for itself and you know that they’ll come into their own when we absolutely need them. And that’s again, an exciting thing for me, is that we’ve not quite seen our bowling unit at its absolute best yet.”So I think when we can start stringing performances together in terms of the batting unit and the bowling unit and the fielding unit together, then I think we can start getting some wins on the board.”

The teenager, who is set to join Chelsea in the summer, delivered a dazzling solo effort to help his team secure a 3-1 victory over their fierce rivals. Estevao displayed extraordinary footwork and composure as he carved through Botafogo’s defence with ease. Picking up the ball on the right flank, he effortlessly skipped past two defenders before executing a slick gibe-and-go with teammate Raphael Veiga. After receiving the return pass, Estevao nutmegged another defender and, with ice-cool precision, delicately chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to cap off an incredible piece of individual brilliance.

Chelsea have shown a clear intent to invest in young talent, and Estevao’s acquisition is part of their long-term strategy to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level. The Premier League heavyweights spent £56 million ($73 million) to seal a future transfer and the forward will make a switch to Stamford Bridge in July 2025, shortly after his 18th birthday.

However, before making his highly anticipated move to England, Estevao will have another opportunity to test himself on the global stage as Palmeiras are set to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States from June 14 to July 13. One of the potential highlights of the tournament could be a clash with Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, providing the youngster with the chance to face the very player he has been compared to throughout his young career.

McKenna must now boldly drop Burns and start Ipswich’s "ridiculous" talent

It’s been an extraordinarily tough start to Premier League life for Ipswich Town this season, with games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion all before November.

However, despite this challenging schedule, the Tractor Boys sit above the relegation zone with four draws to their name, suggesting that survival is well and truly on the cards.

That said, with two losses in their last two games, Kieran McKenna has to make some changes ahead of the clash with Brentford this afternoon if he wants to pick up the club’s first win of the campaign, notably out on the right.

Why Wes Burns should be dropped

Yes, ahead of the game this afternoon, McKenna has to make an attacking change, and based on his performance against Everton and the form of his teammates, Wes Burns should make way.

To his credit, the Welsh international has been an effective outlet for the Tractor Boys in the seasons following his move from Fleetwood, but he has been underwhelming so far this year, failing to score or assist a single goal in his six appearances thus far.

Moreover, he was particularly poor against the Toffees, offering little going forward and giving the ball away for their opening goal, which helps to explain the paltry 4/10 rating he received from the East Anglian Daily Times’ Alex Jones after the game.

That may sound like a harsh rating, but it’s one justified by his statistics, as in his 63 minutes of action the 29-year-old didn’t take a single shot, failed in 100% of his crosses and long balls, didn’t attempt a single dribble, lost 100% of his duels, lost the ball eight times and was dribbled past once.

In all, it was a shocking display, and McKenna must take him out of the lineup, especially as he has a far more talented attacker who could come in for him and add that little bit more to the team going forward.

Why Sammie Szmodics should start

So, the player who should come in for Burns on the right is none other than summer signing Sammie Szmodics.

Now, the first thing to recognise is that yes, the 29-year-old has rarely played on the right-hand side in his career, but he has also rarely played off the left before this season, and if he can play there as a right-footed player, why couldn’t he adapt to life on the right?

Moreover, while the Irishman hasn’t had the most explosive start to life in Suffolk, scoring once in eight games, he showed last season that when settled and given a run of starts, he can be a game-changer for his team.

For example, in just 48 games for Blackburn Rovers last year, the “ridiculous” talent, as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, found the back of the net on 33 occasions and provided four assists for good measure.

This meant that he averaged a goal involvement every 1.29 games for a team that didn’t even get promoted, and unsurprisingly, he was also the Championship’s top goalscorer.

Ultimately, while fans can’t expect that same level of output in the Premier League, Szmodics’ talents are undeniable, and while the right of midfield might not be his natural position, McKenna has to start him ahead of Burns this afternoon as he will surely be able to add that extra spark to Ipswich’s attack.

Three victories in their first four matches – either side of the BBL – put them well on the way to the final where they then hammered New South Wales by an innings. The victories were certainly hard-earned with Mitchell Swepson’s career-best form vital against Tasmania and South Australia while a pair of magnificent centuries from Joe Burns and Khawaja secured a come-from-behind win in the second clash against Tasmania. Swepson’s 32 wickets were the standout haul and pushed his claim for Test honours while the quicks share their success around. They were boosted by having Marnus Labuschagne available for all the matches as he piled up 821 runs. Michael Neser will likely be part of the back-up fast bowlers and could earn a cap if others are rotated or injured while Usman Khawaja may come into the debate for the opening position alongside David Warner. If Matt Renshaw can back up last season with more runs he could yet come back into the frame while Joe Burns will hope his days aren’t done, although they might be. Unless Nathan Lyon is injured, Mitchell Swepson‘s chance will likely have to wait for the subcontinent tours next year.

Chelsea now ready to make move for £50,000-p/w "superstar" in 2025 – report

Chelsea are one of the sides now plotting to make a move for a world class defensive talent in 2025, it has emerged, as they look to continue their rebuild under Enzo Maresca.

Maresca makes mixed start at Chelsea

Currently 11th in the Premier League, Chelsea and Maresca have shown the best and worst of themselves in the opening three games of the season. They blew away Wolves with a clinical performance in the second half which saw them run out 6-2 winners, but couldn't manage to find a way past Crystal Palace a week later as they were held to a 1-1 draw.

Their only defeat of the season (understandable against reigning Champions Manchester City on the opening day of the season) was one in which they came out with some credit for the performance, but the next string of games will be where Maresca's side really begin to sink or swim.

But as is often the way at Stamford Bridge in recent seasons, transfers continue to dominate the headlines, and they have already been tipped to make a 2025 move.

Chelsea keen on superstar centre-back signing

Now, one report has claimed that Chelsea are ready to join the host of clubs chasing former Blues defender Marc Guehi next summer as they look to add a world-class option to their backline.

Guehi spent most of the summer among the headlines, firstly for his decision not to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park and then subsequently for his excellent performances at the heart of England's defence at EURO 2024, helping the Three Lions reach the final before they lost to Spain.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

Following the heartbreak, he was the subject of strong interest from Newcastle United, who had a string of bids turned down for his services, with Palace chairman Steve Parish revealing that they had not stumped up the right fee for his "superstar".

"We would like to keep hold of him. There is a price and a situation where we might consider it," Parish told BBC Sport. "Somebody [in another interview] said he is a superstar, so somebody has got to pay superstar money. Realistically, he is homegrown, 24 years old and a sensational talent – so somebody has to make it difficult for us. At the moment, it isn't."

However, now down to the final two years of his £50,000 a week deal at Selhurst Park, his value is only going to decrease in the windows to come unless he pens fresh terms in south London.

Chelsea nearly signed world star for £0, now he's worth more than Palmer

The Blues fumbled the bag with this one…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 9, 2024

And that has led to a whole host of clubs keeping an eye on him, with Liverpool and Manchester City both also linked with the England international. Now, it is claimed that Chelsea are "paying close attention" with the Blues "still in the market" for a new defender, and the club are "planning a 2025 move" for the centre-back.

Though Chelsea have no shortage of centre-backs on their books, there are question marks over fitness or form in most cases, and Guehi would undoubtedly represent a step up on the majority of them.

Valued at £70m over the summer, Chelsea would effectively see a 20% discount on any fee agreed thanks to the sell on clause inserted into his initial move to Crystal Palace from Stamford Bridge back in 2021, which would also see them net a significant sum should Guehi move elsewhere.

Brendon McCullum on New Zealand's WTC win: 'I'm not sure it's sunk in yet'

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has admitted it was difficult to believe that the team would end their run of near-misses in world events on the final day against India in Southampton while Sir Richard Hadlee lauded the current generation as the country’s greatest ever team.In the end New Zealand reached their target with eight wickets and time to spare deep in the final session of the match, but for most of the day the tension was palpable. For a little while it appeared Tim Southee’s miss at slip against Rishabh Pant could prove costly and then R Ashwin removed both openers in quick succession in the sort of small chase McCullum termed “horrible.”However, after Ross Taylor had been spilled at slip off Jasprit Bumrah with 55 needed, the target was brought into view by increasingly confident batting from him and captain Kane Williamson before Taylor whipped a boundary off his pads to earn New Zealand the mace.Related

  • Williamson toasts 'special feeling' as NZ finally get 'across the line'

“I’m not sure it’s sunk in yet,” McCullum told SEN radio. “Overnight the game was on a bit of a knife-edge – it almost had that feeling of the previous two World Cups, get close but we won’t quite get across the line. But for them to have been able to manufacture a result against the weather and a very formidable Indian side, to do it on the biggest stage is quite superb.”I’m sure over the coming days, weeks even years we’ll look back at this moment and be so proud of what Kane’s men have been able to achieve and the heights they’ve been able to scale. For a country with pretty limited resources it is pretty amazing really and to do it against the powerhouse of world cricket on the biggest stage is something that makes it more satisfying.”Hadlee, New Zealand’s leading Test wicket-taker, added significant weight to the debate about where Williamson’s team sits in the history of the game.”The whole team has shown a high degree of professionalism. Their skill sets have complimented each other to make them a complete playing unit,” Hadlee said in a statement through NZC. “The management and support staff have also played important roles in preparing players to perform at the highest level.”Over the years NZC have built a significant depth of players, which makes us one of the most competitive teams in world cricket. It’s fair to say that this current group of players is the best in our history.”Job done, New Zealand soak in the victory•ICC/Getty Images

New Zealand’s first task of the final day was to take eight India wickets and they were given the ideal start when Kyle Jamieson, who was later named Player of the Match, removed Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession.”I thought the captaincy of Kane Williamson to throw the ball to Kyle Jamieson, against previous routines, at the start of the day’s play was a bit of a masterstroke,” McCullum said. “His height and release point, they measure up so well against the Indian batters. He was able to get the openings and once that happened it really started to sense the belief among the group.”McCullum, who captained New Zealand to the final of the 2015 World Cup, was also delighted that it was Williamson and Taylor at the crease for the winning moment.”Those chases are horrible – 140 seems like a mountain of runs, especially when you know what the carrot is at the end,” he said. “Thought it was really fitting to see New Zealand’s two greats, really, when you talk batting, to see [them] home. There was a bit of luck and good fortune along the way but in this game you are entitled to a little bit if you keep banging the door down.”You could see on the faces of Kane and Ross just how much it meant to them and how satisfying to finally be able to climb that ladder.”

Birmingham could land a dream Jutkiewicz successor who has "got it all"

Birmingham City haven't quite started their new League One season as the dominant force some might expect, with a mediocre 1-1 home draw against Reading secured on the opening day, followed up with a slender 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers on their travels.

Chris Davies' Blues did dominate the ball at 74% possession versus the Chairboys, and did muster up 13 shots to the home side's eight, but it was still an unnecessarily nervy victory come full-time.

The former Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager turned main man in the St. Andrews dug-out would have been pleased with Alfie May's efforts up top though, who has now scored in back-to-back clashes the league, after signing from Charlton Athletic in the summer.

Winning the third tier golden boot last campaign with the Addicks, his starting spot could be amazingly less concrete, if this statement purchase ends up joining.

Birmingham's search for a striker

As reported by Birmingham Live over the weekend, it is looking increasingly unlikely that Birmingham will be able to re-sign former loan star Jay Stansfield this summer, to boost their already impressive attacking arsenal.

Marco Silva has confirmed that Stansfield will get more chances to impress at Fulham instead, despite the fact there have been many approaches for his services from all across the EFL, including the Blues.

Birmingham will continue to try and tempt Fulham into allowing Stansfield to return back to St. Andrews, however, with the Mirror stating that the money-rich Blues haven't 'drawn a line under their interest.'

The electric 21-year-old was a breath of fresh air up top for the West Midlands side last campaign, even as a disastrous relegation was served up, and he could soon be another entertaining attacking option for Davies to rely on, over the likes of an ageing Lukas Jutkiewicz.

What Stansfield can offer Birmingham

Birmingham fans will be well aware of Stansfield's prowess in front of goal, with 13 strikes managed from 47 games last season leading the line, which included the strike above against a now Premier League Southampton outfit.

The Cottagers youngster is also used to dropping down to League One too, when it comes to finding the net on a regular basis, having tallied up nine goals and eight assists from 38 games playing for Exeter City in the third tier, the campaign before his breakout moment with the Blues.

As can be seen above, the 21-year-old has been a notorious goal machine across his youth and senior career to date, with one of his former Exeter teammates in Kevin McDonald even describing the Fulham number 28 as a striker who has "got it all".

Therefore, it isn't a shock to see Silva's men attempting to bed him into their Premier League set-up, hoping he can become a top homegrown talent in the men's team over time.

Jay Stansfield for Birmingham City.

Jutkiewicz will be nervously sweating about the prospect of Stansfield's return though, knowing he could be bumped down Davies' pecking order for the fresh talent to come back in.

The Blues stalwart is a legend in St. Andrew's quarters, having amassed a staggering 333 appearances for the West Midlands club now, but his minutes in the here and now would only further dry up if Stansfield was to rejoin.

The EFL veteran has averaged just 15 minutes of action from off the bench in league action to date, with only two duels won from eight versus Wycombe, as his powers start to visibly wane.

Birmingham will want to take the third tier by storm this season, and would only get into their groove even more, if the statement purchase of Stansfield was pulled off.
