Coventry close in on "exceptional" manager who’s a dream for Wright

Coventry City fans are having to very quickly come to terms with the exit of Mark Robins from the managerial dug-out, anxious about what the immediate future of the Sky Blues looks like without the steady 54-year-old guiding the ship.

The managerless outfit did show some fight away at Sunderland during interim boss Rhys Carr’s first taste of Championship action this weekend, managing to salvage a 2-2 draw away at the table-topping Black Cats, but there were still vocal cries of Robins’ name after the match from the Coventry supporters to suggest the travelling contingent were still grieving.

Football is a sport that waits for nobody, however, with reports now suggesting that the Championship underperformers are getting close to appointing a quickfire replacement.

The frontrunner to replace Robins

Many names have been thrown about to replace the much-loved Coventry figure, including the likes of Lee Carsley and Matt Bloomfield among others, with the options plentiful for the powers that be at the CBS Arena.

Yet, it seems they’ve found their man now in the form of Frank Lampard, which could prove to be a controversial appointment considering his recent managerial failures in the league above with Everton and Chelsea.

Frank Lampard

Still, he shouldn’t be written off completely, with the Mirror stating that Lampard is ‘closing in’ on the Sky Blues vacancy, with plenty of time for him to get up to speed with things in the West Midlands owing to the international break.

Lampard has also been a success in the second tier in the past with Derby County, taking them to a playoff final in 2019 that saw them dance with the thought of promotion, only for Aston Villa to run out as 2-0 victors at Wembley.

Coventry could soon see the divisive 46-year-old enter through the door, therefore, with the likes of Haji Wright perhaps benefitting even more in an attacking sense from the suspected arrival of the ex-Everton boss.

How Lampard would benefit Haji Wright at Coventry

Wright has been having a bright season even if the Sky Blues have fallen short of expectations with some results, with the American netting six strikes from 16 games, on top of picking up an assist.

Confident playing out on the left wing or as a traditional centre-forward, Lampard may well want Wright to play more down the channels if he does join shortly, as his exciting Rams team dazzled many a second-tier defence with tricky attackers on the flanks.

Looking at the table above, a striker didn’t lead the goalscoring charts during Lampard’s one and only season at Pride Park, with Harry Wilson – before he exploded into life in the Premier League – helping himself to a stunning 15 strikes all from down the wing.

It was an enthralling Derby team to watch when it came to their numbers in attack, away from just Wilson hitting double figures, with the Rams accumulating 103 strikes from 57 games the 46-year-old took charge of.

With Wright bagging 16 goals last season in league action interchanging between duties on the left wing and playing up top, Lampard will make it his mission to get even more out of the entertaining American, if he does make the Sky Blues dug-out his own very soon.

Lampard also got the best out of a whole host of attacking midfielders such as Mason Mount and Tom Lawrence, with Victor Torp also wanting his game to be taken to the next level under a fresh manager.

With Jurgen Klopp once describing the former Chelsea boss as “exceptional” when succeeding during his first stint as manager at Stamford Bridge, patience would have to be exercised on the end of Coventry fans to not disregard this appointment from the get-go.

If he’s given time, Coventry could launch themselves into the playoff picture, with Robins’ exit then stinging a lot less.

Leeds confirm partnership with company who caused chaos in $11bn industry

Earlier this year, Nike and Fanatics caused quite a storm in Major League Baseball when they unveiled a series of new uniforms for the league’s 30 teams. The “Vapor Premier” uniforms, which were designed by Nike and manufactured by Fanatics, were developed by scanning the bodies of more than 300 MLB players, and were supposed to be the “most advanced” in the sport’s history.

The results, however, were met with widespread criticism. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward told The Athletic they looked “like a replica,” while Philadelphia Phillies infielder Trea Turner told the Associated Press that “everyone hates them”.

The MLB’s Player’s Union also claimed concerns they made about the uniforms during the six-year design and manufacturing process were ignored, including worries about the pants being transparent.

As a result, in September, it was announced by the MLB, which made over $11 billion in revenue in 2023, that the uniforms were being scrapped and being replaced with their predecessors.

Leeds announce partnership with Fanatics

The saga involving MLB, Nike, and Fanatics appears not to have phased Leeds United. On Tuesday, the Championship club announced a new retail partnership with Fanatics, which the club said will “enhance the retail experience for Leeds fans both in the city and across the world”.

The partnership, which begins next season, will see Fanatics become the exclusive operator of Leeds United’s online store, as well as all official retail locations based across the city, including the store at Elland Road.

Fanatics will also “have the rights to manufacture a wide variety of fanwear and accessories” for the club, though the exact scope of that license is currently unclear.

“This partnership will offer our fans a number of benefits, including better access to a wider range of products, enhanced online and in-person retail facilities and new, exciting Leeds products available for fans,” said Morrie Eisenberg, Chief Operating Officer at Leeds.

Stephen Dowling, International President at Fanatics, said: “Leeds United are an iconic football club, known worldwide, with a rich history of success and a passionate fanbase. We will work tirelessly to ensure that Leeds United fans are given the highest standard of service, the best products and the widest choice, whatever they buy and wherever they are.”

About Fanatics

Fanatics, Inc. is a global digital sports platform that consists of several businesses, including licensed sports merchandise, collectibles, sports betting and gaming. The company was founded by Michael Rubin in 2011.

Rubin, 52, is the owner of NBA team Philadelphia 76ers. He started his career as a teenager when, using money from his bar mitzvah, he opened a ski shop in Pennsylvania. That was followed by the launch of his own athletic equipment brand, KPR sports, before, in 1998, he founded e-commerce company, GSI Commerce, which he later sold to eBay for $2.4 billion.

Today, Rubin is estimated to be worth $10.6 billion, making him among the 250 richest people on earth.

Messages from the players’ senior counterparts have lifted the mood of both camps ahead of Saturday’s Under-19 World Cup final. Virat Kohli interacted with India’s players, while a host of big names – “Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Saqib Mahmood, quite a few,” according to England captain Tom Prest – did their best to gee up England’s Under-19s.”They were saying how impressed they have been with us and proud of what we have done getting to our first Under-19 final in 24 years,” Prest said in his pre-final press conference. “It’s amazing to know they have been watching and following from whatever they have been doing.”Related

Prest said England’s Under-19s have looked to emulate the senior team’s style of play in white-ball cricket right through this World Cup.”Yeah, we’ve tried to play that attacking brand of cricket that Eoin Morgan instilled in that squad,” he said. “Whether that is with the bat, ball or field, we always try to take the positive option. That was one of the messages they were saying in their video they sent this morning – to not back down from the big occasion in the final and still play with that positive intent.”The former England offspinner Graeme Swann, who was part of the side that won the Under-19 World Cup in 1998, is a member of the commentary team now. He also had some words of advice for the England players.”[Swann spoke about] How big momentum is in these tournaments and to not get complacent,” Prest said. “He said in our game against Canada, we won it convincingly but our last ten overs looked a bit slack because we knew we had already won the game. Hearing that from him that it didn’t look great from the outside gave us a kick in the right direction that we can’t get complacent regardless of the stage or situation of the game.”

Yash Dhull, the India captain, said Kohli – who had captained the Under-19s to the World Cup title in 2008 – had passed on advice on how to handle the big day.”He gave us his best wishes as the team is doing well,” Dhull said. “So his words will give us confidence. When a senior player speaks with the team, the team morale gets a boost. He spoke to us about some basic things such as how to play normal cricket, how to stick to our game plan etc. It was good to interact with him.”Ahead of the game, one contest that has been built up as potentially game-changing is the one between India’s spinners and England’s batters. Left-arm spinners Vicky Ostwal and Nishant Sindhu both average under 15 for the tournament while conceding less than four runs an over, and have been driving forces behind India’s progress into the final. Prest, though, believes England possess the skills to handle their threat.”They have obviously got some very good spinners but we’ve had experience playing sub-continental sides, we went to Sri Lanka just before Christmas,” he said. “We’ve all got our own individual plans, whether that is sweeping or using our feet. But we are confident we can put up a good show.”Dhull said India would be wary of England’s attacking approach with the bat.”The challenge against England is that they play in an attacking mode,” he said. “They dominate well, and they don’t let go of the attacking mode even if they lose 2-3 wickets. So we’ll try to stick to our plans and bowl as many dot balls as possible.”

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Amorim said: "Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with Rashford. But Rashford, he has to change. If he changes, we are more than welcome to put a talent like Rashford [in the team], and we need it! But in this moment, I think it's really clear that we have to set some standards. So we are waiting for Marcus, if he wants really, really bad. It's not personal. I have nothing against Marcus, I just have to have the same rules for everybody, for me it's so simple."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rashford and Amorim are reportedly no longer on speaking terms after the striker told journalist Henry Winter he was ready for a "new challenge", with the Portuguese coach repeatedly calling into question the 27-year-old's attitude and work ethic. It feels like the end of the road for Rashford at United, but time is running out for him to find a new home before the January transfer window shuts.

Yorkshire settle employment tribunal with Azeem Rafiq as Lord Patel takes the helm

New chairman outlines measures to restore Yorkshire’s reputation amid racism crisis

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Nov-2021Lord Kamlesh Patel, the incoming chairman of Yorkshire CCC, says that the club has offered an unreserved apology to Azeem Rafiq after settling the ex-player’s long-running employment tribunal, in what he described as the “first vital step” towards becoming “a club which people can trust to do the right thing”.Speaking at a press conference at Headingley, following his unveiling as Roger Hutton’s successor, Patel praised Rafiq’s courage in blowing the whistle on what he had alleged was a culture of institutional racism and bullying at Yorkshire, and insisted that, after 158 years of existence, the club was “ready to change”.The tribunal had originally failed to reach a settlement in June this year, when Rafiq declined to sign a non-disclosure agreement in return for a six-figure sum. However, with the player now set to appear before a DCMS select committee hearing on November 16, Patel confirmed that the club has now waived any such demands in concluding the case.”Absolutely no restrictions have been placed on Azeem on what he can or cannot say about his experiences,” Patel said. “The settlement does not involve a non-disclosure agreement. The club was wrong to have asked Azeem to agree to an NDA in the past, and he rightly refused. And we’ve apologised unreservedly for previously making that demand.”Our offer means Azeem will be free to speak about his experiences publicly. He is free to answer any questions that are put to him when he wants, and that includes the select committee hearing that’s scheduled for the 16th of November.”Addressing the settlement, Rafiq said in a statement: “I want to thank Lord Patel for making the offer and sorting this out within 72 hours of his appointment. It should not have taken the rest of the club a year to realise I would not be silenced through an NDA.”I spoke out because I wanted to create change at the club. I brought a legal claim because the club refused to acknowledge the problem and create change. For the first time that I can remember, I have hope this might happen – but I will be watching and continue to campaign to ensure that it does.”Addressing the measures already taken since the scale of the crisis became apparent to Yorkshire, Patel added that he had called for an independent whistle-blowing hotline to be set up, to “curate a safe space” for other victims of discrimination to come forward with their experiences.”We need to listen,” Patel said. “We want anyone who has suffered issues to come forward, and I’ve noticed that some people who have come forward recently appear to felt unable to step forward in Azeem’s case.”This hotline will provide us with important data as to where specific problems lie so that we can begin to make improvements which are desperately needed. Its independence will allow any of those who felt silenced or intimidated to come forward in a safe place.”Patel also pledged to commission a specialist independent review of Yorkshire’s processes and procedures on diversity and inclusion – including discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, religion and disability – in the wake of the club’s myriad failings in the Azeem case.”Our fans, the cricketing world and the wider public need to trust that we are fit for purpose, and we can deal with issues in a fair and a transparent way,” he said. “My aim is to work together with a range of stakeholders to do this, and this will be tied to my future action plan.”Patel further added that the controversial report into Yorkshire’s racism investigation, which the club had long refused to share beyond a handful of senior employees, had now been passed on to all parties with a legal interest in the case, including Rafiq’s lawyers, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the ECB, and Julian Knight, the chair of the DCMS select committee. As to the club’s immediate future, Patel acknowledged that the loss of a raft of major sponsors – including Emerald, Nike, Yorkshire Tea and Tetley’s – along with the ECB’s decision to suspend Yorkshire’s major-match status, would create a financial “hiatus”. Trevor Strain, the managing director of Morrisons and an existing board member, has been appointed as the club’s chair of risk and audit.”I can confirm that I’ve had discussions and meetings with the ECB about the restoration of international cricket,” Patel said. “We will have to demonstrate that we are addressing the root causes of the issues, and that we are leading change before having any concrete conversations on that.”There’s much more to be done which will become clear to me in the coming days,” he added. “I’m determined to make this club the beating heart of English cricket again. After 158 years, we’re ready to change. We’re ready to accept the past and we’re ready to become a club which people can trust to do the right thing.”

Spurs flop who Poch sold for just £8m is now outscoring Richarlison

It's been an interesting few years for Tottenham Hotspur.

Just a couple of seasons ago, the fans were being subjected to incredibly dull and pragmatic football at the hands of Antonio Conte, and now they are being entertained by the thrilling, albeit occasionally naive, football philosophy of Ange Postecoglou.

The North Londoners produced the sixth-highest expected goals figure in the Premier League last season, per Understat, and with the addition of Dominic Solanke, we wouldn't be surprised to see them rack up even more chances this year.

However, the Englishman has already missed two games this season and should he miss anymore, the goalscoring burden will likely fall to Richarlison, who has shown glimpses of real quality here and there but was outscored by a former Spurs flop last season.

Richarlison's recent form

Spurs paid Everton around £60m in the summer of 2022 to secure Richarlison's services, and in the two years since, it would be fair to say that he hasn't had the best of times.

In his first season with the club, the Brazilian international could only muster up a measly return of three goals and four assists in 35 appearances, meaning he maintained a poor average of a goal involvement once every five games.

However, following Harry Kane's departure last summer, the Nova Venécia-born poacher was given more goalscoring responsibility, and to his credit, he improved upon the previous campaign.

For example, in his 31 matches for Postecoglou, he scored 12 goals and provided four assists, so while he wasn't a goalscoring machine, he did maintain a far more impressive average of a goal involvement every 1.93 games. That said, while Richarlison improved, he was still outscored by a former Spurs flop who left the club five years ago.

Vincent Janssen's 23/24

The player in question is Dutch striker Vincent Janssen, who regularly features in the lists dedicated to Tottenham's worst signings under Daniel Levy.

Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen.

The Heesch-born poacher joined the North Londoners in the summer of 2016 from Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar for around £19m.

While that might seem like a lot of money for a player who struggled as much as he did, it's because in the season prior, he racked up a frankly ridiculous haul of 32 goals and seven assists in 49 games, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.25 games.

However, things didn't work out for him in N17, and he left the club three years later to join Mexican giants Monterrey for £8m, with just six goals, four assists, 42 appearances and one loan spell in Turkey under his belt.

In Mexico, the 22-capped international scored 24 goals and provided five assists in 93 appearances. While that's not exactly spectacular, it was enough to earn him a move back to Europe in 2022 to play for Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he won the league in his first campaign.

Janssen maintained his reasonable form into last season and racked up 17 goals and six assists, just beating Richarlison's total. However, the caveat here is that the Jupiler Pro League is obviously not on the same level as the Premier League.

Ultimately, while Janssen has gone on to rediscover his goalscoring touch in Mexico and Belgium, Tottenham were certainly in the right to sell him when they did, and it was in the best interest of everyone.

Liverpool star looked "like Coutinho" when he joined, then Slot sold him

When Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in a jaw-dropping deal worth £144m, there was a general air of malaise. Jurgen Klopp had fostered a delightful strikeforce and it was carving opponents open at will.

Hindsight shows us that Liverpool need not have worried, for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker were signed with the Coutinho money and the Merseysiders would go on to win hordes of silverware under Klopp’s wing.

Coutinho missed out, but Liverpool did not. The attack not so much purred as growled throughout the years, Mohamed Salah and co obliterating all in front of them. Klopp’s system relied upon a certain machine-like industriousness in the engine room, and Coutinho was quickly forgotten as the trophy hunting began.

He was never really replaced, but there was one young star who was signed with a similar type of profile. His name’s Fabio Carvalho, and he’s still only 22, but he doesn’t play for Liverpool any more.

Fabio Carvalho's time at Liverpool

Liverpool’s youth system was reborn throughout Klopp’s tenure. In stages, bit by bit, a fusty old academy was polished and dusted and given a fresh lick of paint.

Now it’s a juggernaut. Okay, Steven Gerrard and Trent Alexander-Arnold are two salient members of the Kirkby youth system, but further emerging talents were somewhat few and far between before Klopp arrived and lifted Anfield back up.

The revised look on promoting up-and-coming quality stretches beyond just that of homegrown nature, with Carvalho one of the targetted teenagers to be welcomed in their early stage and nurtured toward the first team.

Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho.

Harvey Elliott is another, still plying his craft at the club today and being hailed by broadcaster Nubaid Haroon for having “changed the game so many times” last term.

For Carvalho, though, his role in Liverpool’s squad was short but sweet. The Portugal U21 international scored a dramatic late winner for the Reds at the start of the 2022/23 season but faded after the opening months, restricted to a bit-part role.

He languished with RB Leipzig throughout the first half of last term but dazzled on loan at Hull City from January 2024 to the end of the year. His feats, scoring nine goals and averaging 2.1 key passes per game (Sofascore), led Southampton to launch a £15m bid for his services in March, but it was Brentford who ultimately prevailed after presenting a proposal worth £22m – though this could rise to about £27.5m with add-ons included.

He’ll be hoping to play a standout part in Brentford’s Premier League campaign, and though Liverpool have a wealth of attacking talent at their disposal, Carvalho could have been the difference maker, something different to the existing options.

Slot may rue selling Fabio Carvalho

Carvalho’s ability to operate at number ten and out on the flank, playing with a kind of breezy elegance, is something that scant few other stars can replicate.

Former Liverpool star Jason McAteer even remarked that he looked “like Coutinho” in 2022, indeed carrying the same kind of glittering energy and creative swagger as the Brazilian magician.

Now, Arne Slot has sold him to a Premier League rival, one that will probably finish lower down the league ladder but offers the perfect platform for Carvalho to showcase his quality.

Take the attacking midfielder’s recent display against Leyton Orient in the Carabao Cup, for example. Sure, not Premier League-level opposition, but boy did Carvalho put on a show.

He scored one goal and set up two more against Orient, creating a total of four key passes in a playmaking masterclass. Now, Liverpool might have something of a creative overload, but he would have slotted right in – last season, the Anfield side’s 102 big chances created surpassed every other outfit in the division, while 14 from four fixtures this term puts them joint-first with Aston Villa.

Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho

Given that Liverpool still haven’t really replaced Coutinho, nurturing Carvalho closer toward the fore would have been a wonderful way to fill that hole in the team. Especially when you think that the maestro, now plying his trade in his homeland for Brasileiro Série A club Vasco da Gama, signed for only £8.5m in January 2013.

Carvalho arrived on Merseyside from Fulham in May 2022, with Liverpool paying the London side a tribunal fee of just £5m. He was sold for a profit that equates to a 450% increase, so the reasoning was just, but it could have potentially been so much more, further down the line.

The action is going to continue to storm forward like a freight train over the coming weeks, and Liverpool will need to muster all their forces to return to form in the Premier League, continue their good start to their campaign on the continent and indeed start their Carabao Cup defence successfully.

With Elliott ruled until likely after the October international break after fracturing his foot with England U21s, Slot will be desperate for the rest of his squad to maintain their fitness levels.

Neymar joined the Parisians in 2017PSG paid record €222m fee to BarcaNeymar's father sheds light on historic transferFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Neymar’s record-breaking move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2017 remains one of the most talked-about transfers in football history. The €222 million deal not only shattered the world transfer record but also marked the end of an era for Barcelona’s famed 'MSN' attacking trio of Neymar, Messi and Luis Suarez. For years, the personal reasons behind Neymar’s decision to leave Camp Nou were shrouded in mystery. However, his father, Neymar Sr., has now disclosed the surprising factor that led to this monumental move.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT NEYMAR SR SAID

According to Neymar Sr., his son’s decision to leave Barcelona was not motivated by financial incentives or dissatisfaction but rather by a desire to avoid taking the spotlight from Messi.

“Going to PSG was his decision, he decided to change," he said on the 'Jota Jota Podcast'At that time we were in a very difficult situation at Barca because we didn’t know what the sporting management thought. It seemed that the club wanted him to take Messi’s place and he didn’t want that. He decided to leave, to go somewhere else. I wanted my son to stay at Barca. Until the last days, we tried to keep him from leaving. But he left because he didn’t want to take Messi’s position and be Barca’s biggest star."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neymar’s loyalty to Barcelona was evident even before he joined the club. His father also shared insights into how Neymar prioritised his dream of playing at Camp Nou and in the process rejected Real Madrid, who were willing to pay more to the Brazilian.

"Signing for Barca was entirely his decision," Neymar Sr. said. "I had in my hands offers from Barca and Madrid. The one from Madrid was three times higher. And he said no, he wanted to play with those guys (Suarez and Messi). His dream was to play for Barcelona.”

However, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez previously denied the claims, asserting that Madrid could not compete with Barcelona’s financial offer. Celtic have made an improved offer for another transfer target alongside their ongoing record move for Arne Engels.

Celtic looking to splash the cash before deadline

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers are looking to spend in the final days of the window after cashing in on star midfielder Matt O’Riley, who joined Brighton & Hove Albion in a record Scottish exit.

Rodgers recently urged the Parkhead board to spend instead of saving, saying: “We can't be happy just to make our money and build our pot because the bottom line is on the pitch. That's the bottom line. The supporters, they pay the money. I look back to the Covid times here, the Celtic supporters sold the stadium out and they weren't allowed in it.

“So we have the duty to put the best team on the pitch. That's what we'll do and look to do. It's taken a bit longer than I would have liked. But if we can do it by Friday, strengthen the squad, we'll be in a really, really good place.

“The team is in a good place, mentally, tactically, how they're playing. But we want to strengthen and have that depth. It's taken a lot longer than I would have liked as the football manager. That's my brutally honest answer on it. But I will repeat this. If we get them in, then there's still a long season ahead. So it's important that we do get that. And I have belief that we will do.”

Celtic could land dream signing for Valle in swoop for "lovely" star

The Hoops are reportedly interested in bringing the forward to Parkhead this week.

They are seemingly happy to do that, with midfielder Engels appearing to be a top target in Glasgow. In fact, a record £10m offer has been submitted to Augsburg as the club look to fill the void left by O’Riley.

Alongside the Belgian, Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty is also wanted at Celtic Park. An opening bid of £5m was tabled for the Blades man, and a new update has now emerged.

Celtic make improved Trusty offer

According to Football Insider, Celtic had their opening £5m proposal for Trusty turned down and have since increased their bid to around £5.5m. It remains to be seen whether or not those at Bramall Lane will accept the new offer, although they are under no pressure to do so with the player under contract until 2027.

Trusty is primarily a centre-back who can also play as a left-back and is valued at €7m (£5.89m) by Transfermarkt, so Celtic’s latest bid is getting close to that figure.

Former teammate George Friend hailed his displays at Birmingham City, saying: “I think Trusty has been incredible. I don’t think in the whole time I have been in the Championship I have seen anyone better at coming from a league abroad and just taking to the Championship so easily.

“His first game was Luton away, which is arguably one of the hardest debuts in the league and since then he has just been brilliant. He has been excellent to watch and has taken it in his stride.”

Meanwhile, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder recently said the 26-year-old is a player with “all the attributes”.

“Trusty’s a young player, who we believe is going to be a good player for the football club. He’s got all the attributes, so, good experience for all of those.”
