Glenn Maxwell dropped, Marnus Labuschagne included for Australia's ODI tour of India

Marcus Stoinis has also been left out while Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott are among those brought back

Alex Malcolm17-Dec-2019The Australia selectors have dropped Glenn Maxwell from the ODI squad to tour India in January despite him being available to play following a mental-health break.Marnus Labuschagne has been called up to his first ODI squad following his outstanding form in Test cricket and an impressive Marsh Cup where he was the joint Player of the Tournament alongside Queensland team-mate Usman Khawaja, who has also been left out. There are recalls for Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar.Maxwell will make his return to cricket via the BBL this week where he will captain the Melbourne Stars and has declared he is available play for Australia. However, national selector Trevor Hohns said they will monitor his form in the BBL after Maxwell only managed 177 runs at 22.12 during the World Cup.ALSO READ: Peter Siddle recalled for Boxing Day as Australia opt for local knowledge”It is great to see Glenn Maxwell returning to the game in the Big Bash League,” Hohns said. “We will closely monitor his form after what would have been disappointing 12 months in the one-day game by his standards.”Justin Langer, who will skip the tour to rest with Andrew McDonald taking charge, added: “We love what [Maxwell] can bring, but the truth is he hasn’t performed very well over the last 12 months. We had to take that into account. We are sure he’ll get back to his best and we look forward to that.”Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis have also been dropped after being part of the World Cup. Langer said that Khawaja and Marsh were especially unlucky to be left out. “They have played such great cricket. In a three-game series, you have David Warner, Aaron Finch and Steve Smith; it squeezes those two guys out who have been so important to the one-day side.”Australia’s ODI team has not played since the semi-final loss to England at Edgbaston and the selectors have opted to reward the players who were part of the two T20I series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan as they start the next four-year cycle towards the 2023 World Cup.Nathan Lyon has also been overlooked despite being the second spinner in England and playing in Australia’s tour on India in February, with Adam Zampa and Agar being preferred.Turner, who underwent shoulder surgery after being omitted from the World Cup, returns while Peter Handscomb, who scored his maiden ODI hundred in India earlier this year and whose skills against spin were underscored by Langer, has been retained following his late call-up to the World Cup. Turner will also provide wicketkeeping cover.Nathan Coulter-Nile, the leading wicket-taker in this year’s Marsh Cup, misses out with Hazlewood recalled and Abbott, who played his only previous ODI in 2014, claiming the fifth fast-bowling spot. Jason Behrendorff is unavailable following his back surgery.”The performance of our white-ball squads has been strong, and we are hoping to build the momentum towards the T20 World Cup at home at the end of the year and ultimately build towards the 2023 World Cup in India,” Hohns said.”The performance of the top order at home through the T20 series was very strong so we look for that to continue in the Indian ODI series. We also believe Marnus Labuschagne is ready for his international white-ball debut after his strong form for Queensland in this form of the game.”Ashton Turner has proven himself in India with his ability to adapt to local conditions as did Peter Handscomb who joined the squad at the most recent World Cup. Peter also doubles as a back-up keeper if required while Ashton Agar adds to the squad with his all-round abilities.”In terms of the bowling group we are sticking with combination that are performing well. Sean Abbott and Kane Richardson are in the squad following the successful T20 campaign.”Adam Zampa and his growing combination with Agar is also something the selectors want to see more of while Nathan Lyon remains in the one-day squad selection frame.”The squad will be coached by McDonald, who was recently appointed as senior assistant coach, with Langer staying in Australia after being involved in all forms over the last 18 months.”As one of the leadership group it’s important to show that not only are we focussed on getting the balance right for the players but equally the coaches and staff, head coach included,” Langer said. “Macca (McDonald) is an exceptional coach in all forms of the game and has been fantastic since coming on board. He will do a great job with this squad. We are in very, very good hands.”Australia squad for the ODI tour of India Aaron Finch (capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey (vice-capt), Pat Cummins (vice-capt), Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner, Adam Zampa

+ Cheio?

Jake Libby joins Worcestershire after five seasons at Nottinghamshire

Worcestershire have completed the signing of Nottinghamshire batsman Jake Libby on a three-year deal, after fighting off interest from other counties.Libby, who had been at Notts since 2014, broke into the club’s 50-over side for the first time this season, and was a regular in the T20 Blast, but his Championship returns dried up and his departure at the end of a contract was agreed by mutual consent.A top-order batsman in the red-ball game, Libby announced himself with a hundred on his Nottinghamshire debut against Sussex at the end of the 2014 Championship season, and became a first-team regular in 2016 after an impressive loan spell at Northamptonshire. He improved his limited-overs game sufficiently to play the majority of the club’s Blast season in 2018, but he endured a lean Championship season, with a score of 77 against Somerset in July his only innings above 25.Libby said that “the time is right to move into a new phase of my career and take on a fresh challenge”.”I’ve hugely enjoyed my time at Trent Bridge and will forever be grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to prove myself as a professional cricketer,” he said.”Working with the coaching staff and alongside the calibre of batsmen at Notts has definitely allowed me to progress and mature as a cricketer. I’ve also relished the chances I’ve been given in the past couple of seasons to develop my limited-overs game.”Peter Moores, the club’s head coach, suggested that Libby’s departure would lead his team to look to recruit another top-order batsman.”Jake has been a valued member of our setup and someone who has worked tirelessly on his game throughout his time at Trent Bridge,” he said. “With Jake having expressed a desire to join Worcestershire, we have agreed for him to leave and we wish him all the best with the next chapter.”It creates a place in the squad for another top-order batsman [and] we’ll to recruit with red-ball cricket primarily in mind.”Despite the recent departure of chief executive Matt Rawnsley, Worcestershire have been busy in their recruitment for next season, having signed both Hamish Rutherford and Ashton Turner as overseas players in the past month.

Toby Bailey, Keaton Jennings give Lancashire edge

Lancashire reach 85 for 1 after Toby Bailey and Danny Lamb share eight Glamorgan wickets

ECB Reporters Network18-Aug-2019Lancashire assumed control of their top-of-the-table Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash with Glamorgan after the opening day at Colwyn Bay. Tom Bailey and Danny Lamb claimed four wickets apiece as the Red Rose bowled the hosts out for 257 before reaching 85 for 1 in reply – a deficit of 172 runs.It could have been worse for Glamorgan but for on-loan Samit Patel, who hit a half-century on his debut and combined expertly with the tail, most significantly Lukas Carey who crashed his way to fifty, after the hosts had been in disarray at 145 for 8. But Lancashire finished the day content with their work with Keaton Jennings four runs short of a half-century and Josh Bohannon on 6.Glamorgan opted to bat on a ground which is traditionally batsman friendly, but they might have regretted their decision after slipping to 12 for 2 in the seventh over. Nick Selman and Shaun Marsh, playing his first Championship game after breaking his arm during the World Cup, were both dismissed by Bailey who bowled an accurate opening spell.Lancashire were without Graham Onions who suffered a hamstring injury before play started, but the other four seamers compensated for his absence by taking three wickets before lunch.Charles Hemphrey and Billy Root began the recovery by adding 50 for the fourth wicket, but from the first ball after lunch Root became Bailey’s third victim. Hemphrey went on to score a patient 54 with eight boundaries before he became the fourth lbw victim of the innings – his dismissal starting a collapse of four wickets for only six runs.Patel, who has been signed on loan by Glamorgan from Nottinghamshire for Championship games only until the end of the season, watched from the other end as Chris Cooke and Graham Wagg feathered catches to the wicketkeeper while Ruaidhri Smith was bowled first ball playing back when he should have been forward. Two wickets were taken by the young allrounder Lamb, who had earlier taken his first Championship wicket when he dismissed David Lloyd leg before. This is Lamb’s fifth first-class game and he ended with the creditable figures of 15-2-70-4.Glamorgan were struggling at 145 for 8 but the home team were then indebted to Patel and the tail with the last two wickets adding a further 112 runs. Patel and Carey shared 60 for the ninth wicket, before Patel feel to Bailey for 54, but Carey bludgeoned fifty from 29 balls and was undefeated on 51 when Michael Hogan, who had struck an equally rapid 32, was last man out. The final pair added 52 as Glamorgan gained two batting points.Openers Jennings and Alex Davies made a steady start for Lancashire with the latter striking early boundaries. Jennings was troubled by Hogan who had a confident lbw appeal turned down by the umpire, the ball pitching marginally outside leg stump. The opening pair put on 59 in 17 overs before Smith, in his first Championship game of the season, dismissed Davies leg before for 32, not long before the weather intervened. Play resumed with no further alarms for the visitors who are well-placed to capitalise on their opening day’s work.

Worcestershire ride to victory on back of another Hamish Rutherford ton

Hamish Rutherford’s third century of the season helped Worcestershire to a third win in the Royal London Cup as they beat Northamptonshire by 20 runs at Wantage Road.Rutherford made 126 in 134 balls, adding to his centuries at Grace Road in the County Championship and Old Trafford in the first game of the RLC, in a lone hand as Worcestershire, sent in, struggled to 254 for 9.But they staged a classic defence with pace off the ball in the middle overs to squeeze the Northants chase. At 126 for 3 after 30 overs, the home side were well placed but couldn’t resist trying to force Brett D’Oliveira’s legspin and Daryl Mitchell’s gentlest of medium pace. The pair claimed four wicket to tame the hosts.Northants needed 82 from the final 10 overs and Luke Procter kept them alive with an unbeaten 35 but he ran out of partners as they subsided to 234 and a fourth defeat from five matches, realistically ending their hopes of qualification for the knockout stage.Worcestershire claimed a third win in four and they were indebted to Rutherford, the New Zealander who has proved superb value for money in his short stint. His 10th List A century here held together a clumsy Worcestershire display. They slipped to 23 for 3 in the Powerplay before Rutherford finally found a partner in D’Oliveira and the pair added 84 in 14.2 overs. Rutherford drove Buck down the ground for the day’s first stroke of note before punching Ian Holland – on loan to Northants from Hampshire – over mid-off for four and then straight over the bowler’s head for six.D’Oliveira fell for 28 – a ball that jumped off a length to take the glove to point – but Ben Cox arrived to build another useful stand to take Worcestershire to 166 for 4 in the 32nd over and well-placed. But Cox swept at a full ball from Josh Cobb’s part-time offspin and it sparked a collapse of 4 for 22 in 7.3 overs; Cobb also took out Wayne Parnell’s middle stump trying to cut while Rob Keogh had Ross Whiteley bowled second ball and Ed Barnard caught at short-fine leg.Josh Tongue finally proved another competent partner for Rutherford and the pair added 59 for the ninth wicket – a record for the county against Northamptonshire – to nudge Worcestershire to a challenging total. In reply, Richard Levi and Ben Curran both lifted Charlie Morris tamely to mid-off in the Powerplay but Cobb and Alex Wakely guided Northants’ progress in a stand of 75 in 20 overs. Neither played a shot in anger but just made patient progress. But both were ground down by D’Oliveira and Mitchell and the pressure eventually told.Cobb ran past D’Oliveira and lost his leg stump for 44, while Wakely chipped Mitchell back to the bowler for 46. Adam Rossington then swept at Mitchell’s final ball and was lbw for only 7 and suddenly Northants were struggling with 111 to win in 16 overs.Keogh and Procter brought the equation to 82 needed from the final 10 before Procter pulled Tongue for a flat six backward of square. But Keogh miscued a pull to midwicket and Holland edged a very wide ball to be caught behind. it left too much for Procter to do and the tail didn’t give him the chance.

Mumbai, Kings XI look to put controversies behind, move up the table

Mumbai’s middle-order batting has been a bit shaky, while Kings XI’s recent home record against Rohit Sharma’s men hasn’t been too good

The Preview by Sruthi Ravindranath29-Mar-20193:49

Will Kings XI bring in Mujeeb Ur Rahman?

Big pictureTheir respective first wins this season might have been marred – or overshadowed – by controversy, but Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab will be glad they don’t have any alarming issues to address yet.Mumbai, who came into the tournament with depleted overseas pace stocks, look well-rounded now with Lasith Malinga’s inclusion. They have further received a shot in the arm by roping in West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph as Adam Milne’s replacement. On the other hand, Kings XI, who were over-reliant on openers KL Rahul and Chris Gayle last year, now look like they have a middle-order that can step up when needed. Last year, their middle order (No. 4 to 7) contributed at an average of just 20 in 13 innings, but this year, in just two games, there has been a remarkable turnaround: they average 84 at a strike rate of 148.7.Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin pose ahead of the toss•BCCIMumbai do have concerns in the middle order, to be fair. They lost five wickets for 24 runs in the middle during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore and only recovered because of Hardik Pandya, whose counter-attacking 14-ball 32 took them to 187. Similarly, Yuvraj Singh’s 35-ball 53 was their only solid middle-order contribution in the 37-run loss to Delhi Capitals in their first game. After a couple of away games, Kings XI are all set for their first home game of the season; while that’s usually a cause for optimism for most teams, and they do have a 51% win record in Mohali, they have lost to Mumbai in the last four encounters at the venue.Likely XIsMumbai Indians: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Krunal Pandya, 8 Mitchell McClenaghan, 9 Mayank Markande, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Lasith MalingaKings XI Punjab: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 KL Rahul (wk), 3 Mayank Agarwal, 4 Sarfaraz Khan, 5 David Miller (wk), 6 Mandeep Singh, 7 Andrew Tye, 8 R Ashwin (capt), 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 11 Ankit RajpootChris Gayle was at his blistering best after taking his time to get going•BCCIStrategy puntChris Gayle and David Miller have an impressive record against Mumbai in the tournament. Gayle averages 41 with five half-centuries, while Miller averages 42.8. So how do you stop these two in-form batsmen? The answer, according to historical data, is Malinga. Gayle has scored just 85 runs in 14 innings in T20s against the fast bowler and has lost his wicket twice to him. Miller averages just 8.8 against Malinga and has been dismissed four times.Short-ball strategy against Gayle? Since IPL 2015, Gayle has lost his wicket six times to short-pitched deliveries. Mujeeb ur Rahman, who was replaced by million-dollar mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy last game, has played just three games in Mohali but has an impressive record. He’s picked up 11 wickets and has bowled at an economy of 6.6. Will Kings XI bring him back for this match?Stats that matterSince IPL 2016, Mumbai have won 80% of the matches when their captain Rohit Sharma has scored 20 or above.Mumbai are just one away from their 100th win in IPL – no team has reached the milestone yet. Gayle is two short of becoming the first batsman to hit 300 sixes in the IPL.
