A major power outage at the Gabba resulted in television coverage of the fourth day’s play going off air during the morning session as the opening Ashes Test continued be hampered by technical issues. The world feed – which is taken by all broadcasters with coverage of the match – went down midway through the session leaving the majority of viewers in the dark. Channel Seven, who share coverage with Fox Sports in Australia, were able to provide some pictures with their own cameras at the venue but that, too, was interrupted for a period.Occasionally there was a view provided from just one end of the ground as broadcasters scrambled to get pictures back on air. The DRS was also unavailable during this time. After a 25-minute period of disruption, power was restored shortly after the drinks break and full coverage resumed across networks.Related

Radio commentary was able to continue during the blackout as Australian broadcaster ABC has a presence at the venue.”We’ve very sorry,” Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley told reporters in Sydney. “It hasn’t been ideal. These things happen. My understanding of the situation, and we will get full details and a full report, is it was an issue with one of the generators.”Very appreciative of everyone who worked very quickly to get the feeds and signal back up and running. We can only apologise to the fans.”There have been technical difficulties throughout this match, with the technology that allows the third umpire to adjudicate front-foot no-balls unavailable while Snicko has not been working as part of the DRS.Both of those problems emerged shortly before the match with Queensland border restrictions meaning further support could not be brought to the ground while technicians who are at the venue were not allowed to leave. The lack of Snicko came to the fore on the third day when Australia thought Dawid Malan had edged behind. The absence of the no-ball system only became apparent on the second day when Ben Stokes dismissed David Warner but had overstepped, with replays then showing his first three deliveries had all been no-balls.Broadcasters have been working with severely scaled-back production staff at the Gabba due to the restrictions put in place by the Queensland government. The full DRS is expected to be available in Adelaide.

Three ODIs will take place in gap between home Tests against New Zealand

England fielded a back-up ODI squad against Pakistan in July after a Covid outbreak•Getty Images
England’s men face having to pick two separate squads for international cricket next summer after their three World Cup Super League ODIs against Netherlands were rescheduled for June. The tour had originally been due to take place in May 2020 but was a casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. The matches, to be played at the VRA ground in Amstelveen, will take place on June 17, 19 and 22 – in the gap between the second and third New Zealand Tests at Trent Bridge and Headingley. There is already a large degree of separation between England’s red- and white-ball squads, with a handful of players – such as Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer – used regularly across all three formats. England have greater depth in limited-overs cricket, and beat Pakistan 3-0 earlier this year after having to select an entirely new squad due to a Covid outbreak.England tour of the Netherlands
1st ODI – June 17, Amstelveen
2nd ODI – June 19, Amstelveen
3rd ODI – June 22, Amstelveen
The ECB came under fire last week after pulling out of planned men’s and women’s tours to Pakistan, citing player welfare issues. But there have been few other attempts to address an overloaded playing schedule. The board is understood to have already reached an agreement with the BCCI to stage the postponed Old Trafford Test next summer, following India’s early withdrawal from their tour over Covid fears.England men’s fixture list for 2022 leaves little room for manoeuvre, with three Tests against New Zealand in June, followed by ODI and T20I series against India and a full South Africa tour, which concludes in mid-September.Netherlands are bottom of the World Cup Super League, having seen much of their programme wrecked by the pandemic. They have only managed to play one series out of six since the qualifying process began, beating Ireland 2-1 in June to collect 20 Super League points. England are top with 95 points from 15 matches. The top eight teams will qualify directly for the 2023 World Cup.
Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell is believed to have sent club officials to watch a “fearless” player in action on several occasions, as they consider making a move for him.
Unrest in Newcastle's transfer departement
While the Magpies have made a relatively strong start to the season in terms of points on board in the Premier League, there is a current feeling of unrest at St James’ Park.
That’s due in part to the reported strained relationship between Eddie Howe and Mitchell, who are struggling to see eye to see in their respective roles as manager and sporting director. In fact, a recent report has claimed that the latter could be sacked first, should the situation not improve between the pair.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat away to Fulham in the league on Saturday was a dreadful day at the office, with journalist Luke Edwards lambasting the performance of Anthony Gordon, in particular, describing him as “shocking”, adding that it was “easily” his poorest display for the club.
After an underwhelming summer transfer window at St James’, supporters are desperate for fresh faces to arrive soon, and it looks as though Mitchell is doing his best to make that happen, following a fresh update.
Mitchell sends Newcastle officials to watch 20 y/o winger
According to HITC, Mitchell has ensured that Newcastle have had scouts sent to watch Burnley youngster Luca Koleosho in action multiple times, as they eye a move for him. The Magpies are said to have “joined the chase” for the 20-year-old, who has enjoyed a good start to the season for the Clarets, scoring twice in five Championship appearances.
They are far from the only club keen on signing the attacker, however, with Aston Villa, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace all mentioned as suitors, too.
Koleosho may not be the world-renowned name that Newcastle fans will be wanting the club to sign moving forward, but he is an extremely gifted young footballer who could mature into something special over time.
The winger has been capped by both the USA and Italy at youth international level, winning a combined tally of 14 caps, and he has now once again switched his allegiance, this time to Canada. Meanwhile, former Burnley manager Vincent Kompany spoke of his admiration for him during their time working together.
“He’s just a fearless player, it doesn’t really matter who he’s up against. He was up against a top full-back against Arsenal but he’s done it in every single game, because in every game he’s managed to create and make something happen.
“Against Arsenal it was also a better performance defensively for him because that’s something he can put in the memory bank and draw back on. He’s a player that is eager to show his talents in this league and he’s showing good signs.”

The South Africa-born allrounder had been locked out of the 2020-21 season as well
ESPNcricinfo staff01-Jul-2021South Africa-born Otago allrounder Dean Foxcroft will miss a second successive domestic season in New Zealand due to Covid-enforced border restrictions.Immigration NZ (IMZ) has not approved an exception to its border restrictions, which means Foxcroft will be cut from Otago’s contracts list. The 23-year old was one of 15 players to be offered contracts last month, pending a border exemption.”We are devastated for Dean,” Otago Cricket Chief Executive Mike Coggan said. “He has made a formal commitment with New Zealand Cricket to make himself available, through the qualifying process, to play for the BlackCaps but due to the current Government restrictions in place he is unable to get back into the country to meet these commitments.””He is absolutely distraught, and we are too. Over the past 18 months we have done everything possible to get him back to Otago and at every turn our applications have been denied. He sees himself as a New Zealander who aspires to play for New Zealand one day. We will not give up on supporting Dean to realise his goals”.Foxcroft’s last competitive game was a Plunket Shield fixture for Otago against Central Districts in March 2020. He is among the most promising youngsters in domestic cricket, with a batting average of 51.15 and 41.46 in List A and T20 cricket respectively.
Happy returns for birthday boy Arne Slot. Liverpool breezed past AC Milan at the San Siro in their first taste of Champions League action this season.
Liverpool’s centre-halves showed the likes of Diogo Jota how to score, with both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate heading past Mike Maignan before half-time, cancelling out Christian Pulisic’s ferocious early strike.
Virgil van Dijk scores for Liverpool
Jota endured another testing contest, having not looked near his clinical best in recent weeks. He was eclipsed by the performance of Cody Gakpo, whose dynamism was far too much for the Milan defence to contain.
Cody Gakpo's performance vs AC Milan
Gakpo’s starting to show that he’s best equipped to wreak destruction on Liverpool’s opponents when placed on the left. He was rather brilliant under the European lights on his first start of the season.
The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle handed him a whopping 9/10 match score, writing: ‘Looked threatening whenever he had the ball and was too strong and powerful for Milan at times with his running and dribbling. Had a few shots that worked Maignan in the first half and low cross almost brought a goal from Salah. Brilliant run set up Szoboszlai for the third.’
Liverpool players congratulate Cody Gakpo
It was indeed the upswing in energy and enterprise that was the most attractive part of the Dutchman’s display. We’ve all seen flashes of brilliance over the past couple of years but he doesn’t mesh it all together with the consistency that is desired.
He claimed a wonderful assist for Dominik Szoboszlai’s second-half goal, carving the hosts open like a shark through a school of fish. As per Sofascore, Gakpo hit the target twice and made two key passes, also winning seven of 11 contested duels and completing four of his seven dribbles.
Slot revealed post-match that his countryman was supposed to start against Nottingham Forest last weekend but wasn’t quite fit enough, and Luis Diaz thus reprised his role.
Could have been the difference-maker, that. It’s great to see the Reds boasting such strength in depth though, with Gakpo’s excellent effort diverting eyes from the resurgent Mohamed Salah, who appears to have put his one-match blue patch behind him.
Mo Salah was quietly excellent
Salah was rubbish during Saturday’s Anfield loss against Forest, really, really, rubbish. But that’s okay, the Premier League great can be afforded an off day. After all, he had previously posted three goals and three assists across three matches to start Slot’s tenure off with a bang.
The £34m signing was far more like his imperious self on the continental stage, albeit finishing the match without a goal or an assist to his name – though he did almost everything that he could to achieve that.
Salah hit the woodwork twice – twice – while threatening with some sharp deliveries and a combativeness that isn’t always a part of the Egyptian’s repertoire. Pit his attempt against that of last weekend, and it’s pleasing to see normal service resumed.
Okay, he might not have rediscovered his shooting boots just yet, but the 32-year-old superstar did raise the bar across all the meaningful underlying metrics.

Gakpo’s masterful attacking display took the limelight away from the club’s best forward, but this was a constructive performance for Salah, who has found his feet once again and will be raring to take on Bournemouth at the weekend.
Margins. Fine margins. On another day, with the slightest of tweaks to the aerodynamics, he might be returning to Liverpool with the match ball.

North West Thunder recovered from their heart-breaking one-wicket defeat on the opening day of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy to beat Sunrisers by 36 runs at Chester Boughton Hall and record their first win of the season.Georgie Boyce hit a superb 91 in Thunder’s total of 247, in which Sonali Patel took a hat-trick to finish with figures of 4 for 40. Sunriser’s spirited reply was based around an excellent half-century from Fran Wilson but three wickets apiece for England stars Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone ensured the target was too much for Amara Carr’s side.Boyce and Emma Lamb got the hosts off to a steady start and the pair had reached 44 when Patel made the breakthrough thanks to a smart catch from Alice Macleod at mid-off.A pattern was quickly set as Boyce was joined by a revolving supporting cast with Pippa Cleary, Natalie Brown and Ecclestone all departing to Maddy Villiers’ offbreaks without hurting the Sunrisers too much. It was not until the arrival of Cross that Boyce found a partner of any real note as the 29-year-old sparked an acceleration of the run rate with some powerful hitting. When Boyce finally departed nine short of a well-deserved century, trapped in front Grace Scrivens, Thunder had passed the 200 mark with Cross continuing to bludgeon her side to a competitive total. It was just as well as when Cross skied one to Wilson for a vital 43 she became the first instalment of a Patel hat-trick, with Laura Marshall stumped next ball for 13 before Alex Hartley departed first delivery caught by Scrivens. The clatter of wickets ensured Thunder closed on 247 for 9, which felt a little short of what they would have liked and Sunrisers began their chase in confident fashion.Macleod and Cordelia Griffith had reached 37 unbeaten in the eighth over before Cross claimed two wickets in two balls to dismiss the latter for 22 and have skipper Carr caught behind first ball.Wilson began to rebuild the innings and Sunrisers looked to have got themselves back in contention as together with Macleod the pair built a third wicket partnership of 72. But Ecclestone then struck, trapping the opener in front for 38.Wilson’s lone resistance proved fruitless as the visitors lost their next three wickets for just nine runs with Hartley accounting for Naomi Dattani and Villiers before Lamb claimed the crucial wicket of Wilson bowled around her legs for 50 with Sunrisers 127 for 6.Some late resistance from the tail saw Sunrisers pass 200, but Ecclestone and Cross came back to wrap things up before Hannah Jones trapped Gayatri Gole in front for 15 and claim the victory.

Helmes full of praise for Wirtz
Called him world's best midfielder
Wants him to join Real Madrid in 2025

WHAT HAPPENED?
Former Bayer Leverkusen and Germany striker Patrick Helmes has hailed Florian Wirtz as the best midfielder in the world following his emphatic display in the Champions League game against RB Salzburg earlier this week, and has predicted him to join Spanish champions Real Madrid next summer. Helmes also stated that Wirtz is a better player than Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Wirtz has been sensational since joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2020, and has rubber-stamped his credentials as one of the best young players in the world in the past year and a half. This season, he has already scored five times for the reigning Bundesliga champions in the Champions League.
The 21-year-old is heavily linked to a move to one of the big clubs next summer, with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City all in pursuit for the German international's signature in 2025.
It was reported earlier in the week that Leverkusen are planning to extend Wirtz's contract, which expires in 2027, by at least one more year in order to ensure they get the right price for their coveted youngster. However, Helmes believes that Wirtz is ready to take the next step in his career and would love to see him at Real Madrid.
WHAT PATRICK HELMES SAID
"I was in the stadium for the Champions League match against Salzburg. What Florian Wirtz can do is absolutely exceptional for me. Probably the best midfielder in the world," Helmes said on (h/t Spox).
"I think that Wirtz has something different that Jamal Musiala isn't quite ready for yet. I think Wirtz will simply move on in the summer. He has left huge shoes to fill in Leverkusen. With the way he plays football, he is an absolute hero there, the best player in the squad.
"I can imagine that he will go to Spain and go to Real Madrid. That would be something where I would say, 'Yes, he could do that now'."

WHAT NEXT FOR FLORIAN WIRTZ?
Wirtz will be buoyed by his performance in mid-week as he scored two goals and made one assist in Leverkusen's 5-0 rout of Salzburg in the Champions League. He will be hoping to carry that form into his team's next fixture, which is scheduled to be played on Union Berlin on Saturday, November 30.
