Wrexham get there in the end! Red Dragons made to work for narrow win over Crawley as Elliot Lee and Max Cleworth hit the net while Paul Mullin toils on starting XI return

Wrexham were made to work for their 2-1 win over Crawley Town, as they were largely outplayed, but found a way to take all three points.

Wrexham had to battle against a vibrant Crawley side as they attempted to continue their fine start to the season, and they were made to suffer throughout the 90 minutes, although they managed to escape with all three points.

The hosts were ahead within 30 minutes albeit against the run of play, as Elliott Lee tapped home from close-range after an excellent ball in from Max Cleworth, after a chaotic corner delivery that bamboozled goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott.

Before half-time, Arthur Okonkwo was required to make an excellent save to deny Will Swan and keep Wrexham's clean sheet intact. He was well-beaten, however, when Junior Quitirna skipped around him and only had James McClean standing between him and the goal; amazingly, he managed to put his effort over the crossbar. After half-time, though, Quitirna made up for his miss, as he equalised in the 54th minute, finishing into the bottom corner after some intricate build-up.

Lee missed a golden chance to put Wrexham ahead again on 74 minutes; Jack Marriott's cross was diverted into the striker's path but he dragged his shot wide. Paul Mullin was substituted as the Red Dragons chased a winner, and Cleworth found it, heading in from a brilliant George Dobson cross.

Okonkwo was key to Wrexham's win. He may well have conceded, but the former Arsenal goalkeeper was required to show just how good he is to keep Parkinson's side in the lead. Crawley played remarkably well, particularly in attack, but Okonkwo stood up to be counted.

Mullin was back in the starting XI after his injury-enforced absence and his only notable contribution was to bend a free-kick wide. With Wrexham level and chasing a winner, Phil Parkinson opted to take his striker off. That was likely pre-planned, but it could also have stemmed from his lack of impact.

Stuart Broad inspires England with bat and ball as West Indies come unstuck

Throwback fifty from veteran seamer sets stage for England attack to prosper

The Report by Valkerie Baynes25-Jul-2020

Stuart Broad claimed the first wicket of West Indies’ innings•Getty Images

A throw-back performance with the bat and a more modern turn with the ball from Stuart Broad had England in control of their destiny after the second day of the deciding Test against West Indies.James Anderson weighed in heavily as part of an enviable England seam attack in favourable conditions at Emirates Old Trafford to leave West Indies 137 for 6 – still 33 short of avoiding the follow-on – when bad light stopped play.England’s position was not nearly as promising after a mini-collapse sent them from 258 for 4 at the start of play to 280 for 8 inside the first hour. The scene was set for Ollie Pope, resuming on 91 not out, to reach his second Test century and Jos Buttler, unbeaten on 56, to convert a confidence-boosting knock into a statement-making big score. But neither of the protagonists from the previous day featured and nor did the rain that was expected to wipe out all of Saturday’s play, but which didn’t make an entrance at all.Shannon Gabriel ignited West Indies’ charge with the second new ball – which was only 3.4 overs old before bad light had stopped play the previous evening – when he had Pope out without adding to his overnight score in an eventful spell.Gabriel twice over-stepped while hitting Buttler on the pad, with replays also suggesting he’d found an inside edge both times. He then had Pope put down at slip by Rahkeem Cornwall, who had taken a blinder there the previous day and whose slips fielding is highly rated. On this occasion, Cornwall got both hands to an outside edge from Pope at waist height but shelled it to hand the batsman a life. With the first ball of his next over, however, Gabriel got his man when Pope aimed to whip a straight ball into the leg side, but it whizzed past his bat and crashed into middle and off.Kemar Roach then claimed his 200th Test wicket when he had Chris Woakes out, chopping on. Having waited the best part of 11 months and 521 deliveries before breaking his wicket drought in last week’s second Test, Roach became the ninth West Indies player to reach the milestone.Gabriel had Buttler out for 67 to a sharp, low catch by Jason Holder at second slip, then and Roach and Holder combined to dismiss Jofra Archer, Holder taking another good slips catch. That brought Broad to the crease and it was the Broad of old, the one known for his batting ability and regarded as a genuine all-round talent before he was struck by a Varun Aaron bouncer on this ground in 2014. On this occasion, he raced to fifty off just 33 balls – equal third-fastest by an England batsman. He sent a thunderous six off Roach high over midwicket and drove Gabriel intently for four, but Broad took a particular liking to Holder’s bowling, picking off three fours from one over and two consecutive fours off his next. Broad also brought up his half-century with a blazing stroke over backward square off Holder. It was Roston Chase who got rid of him, Broad sending a low full toss straight to Jermaine Blackwood at deep midwicket, but not before he had put on a very handy 62 from 45 balls. It was Broad’s 13th Test half-century but his first since 2017.In keeping with the nostalgic theme, old heads Anderson and Broad opened the bowling for England. Broad, 34, may object to being put in the same age category, having recently stated his intention to emulate Anderson, who turns 38 this month, and keep taking wickets well into his late 30s.Broad started well, enticing an edge from Kraigg Brathwaite that went to Joe Root at slip with his fourth ball, the 10th of the innings.Anderson then watched as Ben Stokes produced a rare fumble to put down John Campbell at second slip. The outside edge reached him at a decent height but Stokes went low and dropped it as the under-pressure opener, on 10, survived. It was a while before England made another breakthrough, but they did it in style with Archer setting Campbell up with a series of full-length balls before unleashing a short one at his ribs, the ball flying off the bat handle and looping to Rory Burns at gully. Campbell was gone for 32.Anderson got his rewards with an excellent delivery that straightened late to have the struggling Shai Hope caught behind just before tea, and he removed the in-form Shamarh Brooks three balls after the resumption, this time finding the inside edge to give Buttler another catch.Broad had Chase out lbw to match Anderson’s figures of 2 for 17 and when Woakes flattened Jermaine Blackwood’s middle stump, West Indies were left needing a big partnership from captain Holder and Shane Dowrich.

Newcastle could land dream Gordon partner this summer in £60m "magician"

Newcastle United's forward line has caught the eye this season, with the Magpies finding the net on 69 occasions, a tally only beaten by the top three in the Premier League.

Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon have both impressed under boss Eddie Howe, scoring a combined 27 goals in England's top flight – with the latter managing to reach double figures for the first time in his career.

The pair have been consistent starters this campaign despite the current injury crisis at St James' Park, often joined by a different player in the final third each game week.

Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron have all attempted to complete the Magpies' attacking trio, but their constant injury setbacks have prevented any of them from nailing down a starting spot on the right of Newcastle's frontline.

However, the club have been linked with a new forward in recent weeks, with the club needing to go all out this summer to win the race for his signature.

Newcastle could sign high-profile forward this summer

As per a report last month from Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live, Newcastle's head of recruitment Steve Nickson has previously been spotted at Wembley watching England vs Brazil – keeping a close eye on Gordon and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

However, he was also monitoring the Brazil squad, in particular, Barcelona forward Raphinha, who could be set for a move away from the Spanish club this summer.

The 27-year-old is also subject to interest from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, with the Magpies potentially facing a battle to win the former Leeds United wideman's signature.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

The Brazilian, who has featured 24 times in La Liga this season, could depart the Spanish giants, with Barça looking to raise funds where possible given their awful financial status.

Chronicle Live also state that the Brazilian could cost the Magpies £60m this summer, with the club needing to offload players before any players are brought into St James' Park.

Why Raphinha would be the dream Gordon partner

Although the £60m may seem hefty, the club would be welcoming one of the most productive forwards in Europe this season, with his stats allowing the likes of Isak and Gordon to reach the next level.

In La Liga this season, he's produced 0.6 assists per 90 – a stat that sees him rank higher than 99% of other forwards within Europe's top five leagues.

Raphinha Barcelona

Raphinha has also averaged 4.3 progressive passes and 3.6 progressive carries per 90, with the Brazilian showcasing his desire to create opportunities in the final third.

The "magician" as dubbed by former Leeds teammate Dan James, has registered eight assists in the league this season, proving that he's also able to add an end-product to his ball-carrying ability.

Although he's failed to find the net on as many occasions as Gordon and Isak, the 27-year-old has still produced multiple impressive stats, including 3.9 shots per 90 and 6.1 shot-creating actions – which, like his assists, ranks him above 99% of forwards this campaign.

Raphinha also has five league goals to his name in La Liga, taking his contributions to 13 – a tally that would certainly bolster Howe's already potent attack, helping to balance the forward line with Gordon one one flank and the Brazilian on the other.

His impressive stats are there for everyone to see, with the rumoured interest from other Premier League sides no surprise given his form in Catalonia this campaign.

Howe and the Saudi PIF must prioritise the addition of Raphinha this summer, with the forward's ability to create opportunities in front of goal hugely beneficial to the Magpies' European hopes, whilst allowing the club's forward to bolster their already impressive goalscoring tallies.

Shoaib Malik's comeback fifty ends Pakistan's losing streak

It was neither pretty nor particularly engaging, but now isn’t the time for Pakistan to worry about that. They followed a disciplined bowling performance with a gritty chase spearheaded by the returning Shoaib Malik, after a second-ball duck for Babar Azam threatened to turn a straightforward task somewhat hairy. It sealed a five-wicket win for Pakistan, snapping a six-match losing streak in the format, and ensuring they hold on to their No. 1 T20I ranking for now.Malik’s unbeaten 45-ball 58 was the only half-century of the game, coming at something of a canter after Bangladesh spread the field through the middle overs, happy to concede singles that weren’t really theirs to give away, given the modesty of the total they were defending. Debutant Ahsan Ali, and towards the close Iftikhar Ahmed, gave him useful company, but with the asking rate never really allowed to rise above eight, Pakistan weren’t in any imminent danger. The bowlers were due thanks from the batsman for ensuring they never needed to get out of second gear. Shaheen Afridi began tightly, and Imad Wasim gave little away in the Powerplay after Bangladesh decided to bat on what looked, at the time, a belter of a surface. Though Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Naim stuck around for 11 overs, the bowlers kept them on a leash throughout, and their opening partnership only produced 71 runs at 6.45 per over. Shadab Khan ensured the squeeze was maintained through the middle overs, and Bangladesh never got in a position to explode at the finish.Mohammad Rizwan looks on as Tamim Iqbal clips one into the leg side•AFP

A strangely subdued inningsThe caution Bangladesh displayed was surprising, particularly during the second half of the innings when it became clear wickets would no longer be a problem. While Pakistan’s tightness made it difficult to score quickly, there was no evidence Bangladesh were ready to show any more ambition than the odd boundary off the loose ball, and it was only when Haris Rauf’s final over went for 13 that the innings run rate exceeded seven an over. For a team that preferred to deal in running between the wickets, there was a touch of tardiness there too. An ill-judged second run brought the first wicket when Tamim was found well short of his crease when Mohammad Rizwan whipped off the bails, and one of the few moments of genuine quality in an otherwise uninspiring game came when Shadab ran all the way to long-on off his own bowling, and followed up with a direct hit on the turn to catch Liton Das short of his ground.Pakistan lose two in powerplayJust because the target was low didn’t mean Pakistan were set for a canter. They played three T20Is against Sri Lanka on this ground three months ago, had to chase targets of 166, 183 and 148, and fell short each time. Twice, they ended up scoring less than the 142 they needed in this game. When Babar fell second ball, tickling one to the keeper to record his first duck in T20Is, Pakistan looked in for a grind.Ahsan Ali appeared to possess the temperament that will please Misbah-ul-Haq, pouncing on any loose deliveries to relieve the pressure on Mohammad Hafeez at the other end. For his own part, Hafeez began brightly before closing his bat face a fraction early off a Mustafizur Rahman slower ball, sending a leading edge to cover point. At that point, Pakistan were 35 for 2 in five overs.Pakistan gather around Shadab Khan after the dismissal of Tamim Iqbal•AFP

Bangladesh release the pressureFrom that point, Mahmudullah may wonder if he allowed the game to drift. The fields were spread out and the bowling notably defensive, almost as if it were a plan to allow the batsmen to take as many singles as they pleased as long as the boundaries didn’t come. From the middle of the sixth over to the fifth ball of the 11th, when Ahsan holed out to long-off, Pakistan scored off 31 consecutive balls. Forty runs came off those 31 balls, and the asking rate dipped below seven with plenty of batting to follow.Malik cashes inFor at least one of the two men recalled, this could be the beginning of yet another redemption story. Malik, who ended up walking away with the Player-of-the-Match award, milked the Bangladesh spinners, the visitors’ tactics playing right into his hands. With Ahsan gone, he quickly assumed charge, keeping on top of the asking rate without once needing to play a shot in anger. The only time he took a risk, he was dropped at long-off following a valiant effort on the boundary, and when the ball trickled away for four, he had brought up yet another half-century.Bangladesh would continue to plug away, dismissing Iftikhar Ahmed and Imad Wasim, but Pakistan continued to coast, and the match went into its final over without a hint of tension in the air. With two required off four balls and Malik off strike, Rizwan went for a heave, edging the ball straight to deep midwicket. It was the simplest of chances, and could have put a few beads of sweat on Pakistani foreheads had it been taken. Mohammad Mithun, however, made a mess if it, and Pakistan cantered back for the winning second run. It was only fitting that an insipid, indifferent performance from Bangladesh was sealed by a moment of ineptitude, as Pakistan took the lead in lead in a series that will hopefully contain more entertainment than was on display on Friday, in front of a half-full Gaddafi Stadium.

Club contact Southampton over move to sign 22 y/o in surprise transfer

As Southampton fight for promotion, the outcome of their fight looks set to have consequences on their transfer activity this summer, with one player potentially heading for the exit door.

Southampton transfer news

If the Saints go up, then they should be in for an enjoyable summer, with incomings arguably far easier to convince when able to offer Premier League football. Should they fail to reach the top flight, however, then questions will undoubtedly come over their ability to keep hold of players. We saw the damage that losing their Premier League place did last season, with James Ward-Prowse leaving, and this summer may be no different.

Southampton must drop star who had fewer touches than Bazunu v Blackburn

Russell Martin could now axe this Southampton star who managed less touches than Gavin Bazunu versus Blackburn Rovers.

ByKelan Sarson Apr 9, 2024

Either way, the rumour mill is already underway. According to reports, Southampton are following Vizela captain Samu ahead of a potential summer switch, whilst Karamoko Dembele has also been linked with a move to St Mary's in the coming months. Both players would improve Russell Martin's squad, with the latter a player who has been tipped for great things since he first broke through at Celtic, before now starring on loan at Blackpool from Brest.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Away from incomings, however, the Saints could lose a player who once cost them €10m (£9m). According to Fotomac, relayed by Sport Witness, Galatasaray have made contact to sign Armel Bella-Kotchap from Southampton this summer in what is described as a surprise transfer.

The central defender has endured a frustrating spell on loan at PSV Eindhoven this season, having been hit with injuries and a lack of game time in the Netherlands. Now though, he looks set to be offered a lifeline in the form of a permanent move away from St Mary's and a fresh start altogether at Galatasaray.

Bella-Kotchap has reportedly welcomed the interest of the Turkish giants and doesn't want to return to England if Southampton fail to earn promotion from the Championship this season.

Southampton have decision to make on "fantastic" Bella-Kotchap

Whilst things haven't worked out for the 22-year-old at PSV, he still has plenty of potential and showed glimpses of that even as Southampton suffered relegation last season. The fact that the Saints have a player with such potential on their books makes promotion all the more important this season. If they go up, the German could still play a part in any success that Martin's side has.

The praise of Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig certainly suggests that Southampton's forgotten man can quickly become a central part once more, should he decide to stay put this summer.

Meanwhile, logic suggests that the potential Bella-Kotchap has should at least attract an impressive fee if Southampton sell up this summer, with the Saints potentially making back what they initially splashed out. Only time will tell whether that will be the case when the summer window swings open in the coming months, however.

Ten Hag must immediately bin Man Utd ace after 2/10 Brentford display

The international break either goes one of two ways for a club: it provides an opportunity to put a bad run of form in the past, or, like in Manchester United’s case, it stops momentum from a positive result.

At the beginning of the campaign, qualifying for the Champions League was viewed as a minimum requirement by everyone at the club, especially after an impressive campaign last season.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before a Premier League game.

However, unfortunately for Erik ten Hag’s side, a top-four finish is now looking extremely unlikely after they suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw away to Brentford.

Mason Mount’s first goal for the Red Devils looked set to be the winner with minutes to go, but a Bees equaliser ruined the visitors' party.

That said, the celebrations could only get going after 90 minutes of play, as United’s performance was deserving of a defeat – with one player in particular having a horrific evening.

Scott McTominay’s 23/24 campaign

It’s fair to say that Scott McTominay is enjoying his best campaign in a United shirt this season, with the midfielder having a catalogue of key moments.

The Scottish ace has played in all but two games in the Premier League this campaign, starting 15 times and becoming a super-sub on a few occasions.

Scott McTominay

Despite playing from midfield and only averaging 61 minutes per game, McTominay is currently the Red Devils' top scorer in the league with seven goals, highlighting his importance in an attacking sense.

The 27-year-old’s ability to impact the game in the final third was on display in the 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool, where he scored and assisted, but he’s been unable to provide that level on a consistent basis.

Furthermore, when looking at the bigger picture, it’s quite clear that the number 39 holds the team back, and that was most definitely on show against Brentford.

Man Utd ace who "loves a goal" has seen his value soar under Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has a big choice to make this summer over star’s future.

ByTom Lever Feb 15, 2024 Scott McTominay’s performance versus the Bees

After the game against Liverpool, the expectation was for McTominay to play to a similar standard, adding energy and athleticism in the middle of the park.

Instead, the United academy graduate struggled massively from the first whistle to the last, with the Manchester Evening News handing him a 2/10 rating for his performance, describing him as a “passenger” – and the table below showcases his stats from the game, suggesting the same.

Yellow Cards

1

As you can see, McTominay was rather ineffective from both an out-of-possession perspective and when on the ball, which was a rather infrequent sight throughout the 90 minutes.

Despite Ten Hag’s team shading the possession, the team displayed a huge lack of control, which inevitably led to Brentford having a ridiculous 31 attempts at goal and an xG of 3.29.

The reason for this doesn’t solely fall on the shoulders of the Scotland international, but his 23 passes out of 33 with an accuracy of 70% did cause issues for United, handing the Bees opportunities to counter.

Additionally, the midfielder was almost invisible off the ball, losing 8 of his 13 duels, making one tackle and failing to register an interception.

Overall, this type of performance has been all too common this season, and it’s quite clear that McTominay must be dropped, as the best midfield pairing at United currently is undoubtedly Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.

Newcastle have “financial resources” to sign "great player" this summer

Newcastle United reportedly have the "financial resources" at their disposal to complete the signing of a "great player" this summer, with the individual in question a wanted man.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies will want to enjoy a significant summer in the transfer market, having gone backwards this season after their superb 2022/23 campaign. Granted, Eddie Howe still has an excellent squad when everyone is fit and firing, but too many players are injury-prone, and bringing some new blood will add a freshness to the group.

Sven Botman's long-term ACL injury means centre-back targets could be at the forefront of PIF's thinking at the end of the campaign, with Sporting CP duo Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande both once again linked with moves to St James' Park in a recent report.

ousmane-diomande-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

Hugely exciting young RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko has also been seen as an option for the Magpies this summer, possibly coming in as Callum Wilson's replacement should he depart in the coming months. The Englishman's current deal expires next year, meaning 2024 is Newcastle's last chance to realistically receive a fair amount of money for his services.

Elsewhere, Shakhtar Donetsk maestro Georgiy Sudakov is another target for the Premier League giants, having already registered 29 goal contributions (15 goals and 14 assists) in 91 appearances for his current side at the age of just 21.

Newcastle want to sign "great player"

Now, a fresh transfer rumour has emerged, with Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness] reporting that Newcastle are still interested in signing Dean Huijsen this summer, and have the "financial resources" to snap up the highly rated Juventus centre-back.

However, the report does stress that the 18-year-old has "many admirers abroad", so there could be a big battle to acquire his signature when the summer arrives; and in any case, Juve see him as a prized asset they are reluctant to let leave at any point in the near future.

Dean Huijsen in action for Roma.

Huijsen is a player with a frightening amount of potential, so the idea of Newcastle signing him over others this summer is a mouthwatering prospect for the supporters.

Assuming Botman makes a full recovery from his huge ACL setback, the Magpies need to look at signing a young long-term partner for the Dutchman at the back; with Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles both in their 30s, the Juve ace would represent a great option. Manager Massimiliano Allegri is under no illusions as to how impressive Huijsen is as a player, praising him after his debut earlier in the season and comparing him to a former defensive great at the club:

"Huijsen entered the game serene and calm, he never played complicated passes and never put his teammate in difficulty. He reads the game like a great player. He does things like Ciro Ferrara.

“Dean worked with the tranquility and serenity of a thirty-year-old."

The £7m Newcastle flop who's now playing in France's 5th tier

It’s safe to say he’s had a dramatic fall since leaving Newcastle.

ByEthan Lamb Mar 23, 2024

Whether Juve allow Huijsen to move on this summer is certainly up for debate, but the fact that Newcastle are in the race to sign him says so much about the progress made by the club, even if this season has been a disappointment.

Last Dance: Is this Copa America the final run for Lionel Messi era at Argentina?

With the legendary attacker's career nearing an end, is this the final starring role for his country?

You may have seen it. A video went viral a couple weeks back showing Argentina emerging from the locker room ahead of their opening round Copa America clash with Canada. A team full of superstars, Argentina's starters were seen stationed in the hallway, each doing their own thing, until, suddenly, Lionel Messi appeared. Immediately, every man fell in line. They marched together like wolves, with Messi clearly the alpha of this pack on the way to battle.

It almost looked scripted, something out of a movie, and Messi was the clear main character. Social media commenters compared him to Tommy Shelby and other gang leaders, one that commands respect the moment he enters a room. Others chimed in on his aura. Whatever your thoughts, the video made one thing abundantly clear: this Argentinian team, as good as they are as individuals, is collectively ready to follow this man wherever he leads.

That's the power of Messi and, in recent years, that power has become less a weight and more a rallying cry. For so many years, Argentina seemed afraid of falling short, but this team's mentality is different. Argentina is no longer concerned about letting Messi down. Instead, they're singularly determined to lift the man up.

It's been the defining factor of these last few years, a historic run for this team. World Cup and Copa America winners, Argentina are on the path to another Copa America final. As they prepare for face Canada in Tuesday night's semifinal at MetLife Stadium, it's time to reflect on an Argentina run that, for the first time in recent memory, has NOT been defined by Messi.

The charismatic aura is still there, as is supreme leadership, but the goals haven't been. He's played a major role, but not neccesarily a starring role. Instead, Messi's Argentina teammates have done the heavy lifting that was solely on him to shoulder for so long. And because of that, this feels like a summer in which this team is between eras or, perhaps, transitioning to a new one.

The Messi Era is nearing an end and a new post-Messi run will soon begin. For now, though, it feels as if this Argentina team is more than equipped to lift their talisman at least one more time.

GettyMessi's team becomes a team

For much of the winger's career, it felt as if Argentina's hopes lived and died with Messi. It also felt like no one was more aware of that fact than the man himself. The amount of pressure so often weighed him back down to a place where mere mortals were then able to compete with him. That showed itself often in the biggest of moments, most notably, in the 2016 Copa America final, when he missed a penalty that could have helped his country claim its first trophy of his era.

That weight wasn't just on Messi's shoulders but on those of his teammates. At times, Argentina's other stars seemed to carve out their own roles. Everyone was so worried about Messi, that, at times, it felt like they didn't know what to do themselves.

That all changed over the last few years as Argentina constructed a group that has parts that fit. Messi is the figurehead, of course, but this team is still perhaps the best in the world when it comes to players simply knowing their roles.

Everyone has a part to play and some are more glamorous than others, but each player that puts on a shirt steps onto the field knowing what they need to do. From young stars such as Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez to veteran presences like Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi, this team has become… well, a team, and one to be reckoned with.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesA slower Copa America

This summer, as Argentina reached the Copa America semis, you've seen a generational shift start to take hold as Messi begins to slow down.

Hampered by a slight injury, Messi has yet to score a goal in three appearances at this summer's Copa. He has played a part, often turning provider, although he doesn't officially have an assist on record. Di Maria, too, has yet to score.

Messi hasn't quite been dominant, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been effective. Against Canada the first time, he created mujltiple chances and was unlucky not to score. He's still a player that commands attention, but those magic moments aren't coming quite as often as they did just a few years ago.

After missing out on the group stage finale against Peru, Messi was back in the XI for Argentina's penalty kick shootout win over Ecuador in the quarterfinals. Thanks to a rare Messi mishap, though, Argentian will count themselves lucky to have survived that match.

GettyA metaphorical moment

The last time that the Copa America was on U.S. soil, there was nothing Messi could do but watch. He'd missed his penalty in the shootout against Chile, leading to Argentina's demise. It wasn't all on him, but he sure felt that was – and actually briefly retired from Argentina duty after the game.

Argentina's quarterfinal clash with Ecuador last week must have felt like some awful deja vu. Messi, once again, stepped up first and, once again, missed. His panenka attempt was just too high. Once again, Argentina's fate would be left in his teammate's hands.

This time, though, they stepped up. It felt like a true sign of what this team has become: Messi is the unequivocal leader, but this group has his back.

Emiliano Martinez perhaps most of all. The Aston Villa goalkeeper might just be the best shootout specialist in the world. His goalkeeping is fantastic and his mind games are even better. Love him or hate him, Martinez is fantastic in these moments. After the match, Messi hailed Martinez as "the best goalkeeper in the world". He might be right.

Alvarez, Otamendi, Alexis Mac Allister and Gonzalo Montiel – they all stepped up after Messi, and each buried from the spot. Otamendi's finish was decisive, and, after scoring, the defender ripped off his shirt, revealing, among others, a tattoo of Messi.

The Argentinian icon is still the focal point, but this Argentina team is one that is more prepared than ever for the inevitable moment when that's no longer the case.

Messi was unstoppable during Argentina's 2021 Copa America run. He scored four goals in that tournament, winning the Golden Boot while winning a share of the Best Player award alongside longtime friend and teammate Neymar.

If Argentina does win this thing, one of their star attackers will likely claim both of those awards – but it won't be Messi.

For years, Argentina fans have been waiting for Lautaro Martinez to bring his club form to the national team – it's now safe to say he has. The Inter star has four goals in four games, only two of which were starts. He's the favorite for the Golden Boot and, right now, Argentina's most dangerous goal threat.

It's not just about goalscorers, though. Mac Allister is dominating the midfield on both sides of the ball, leading a unit that has a remarkable amount of talent. Fernandez, Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes have all been the perfect puzzle pieces.

And defensively, the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero has been near-perfect. There may not be a better duo on the international stage right now, at least if we're talking about form. And then there's Emi Martinez, who is almost unbeatable, especially once he gets his confidence going.

This Argentina squad is deep from top to bottom. Messi now has a group behind him that has the ability to both follow his lead and lift him up in his moments of need.

Manager on brink of exit after claim West Ham could replace Moyes with him

A manager is in danger of leaving his current club after claims that West Ham could offer him the job to replace David Moyes.

Moyes under more pressure after Forest defeat

2024 is beginning to look like a year to forget for Moyes, who is now under even more pressure after a 2-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest last weekend.

"Exceptional" manager wants to replace David Moyes at West Ham

It was another defeat on the weekend.

Goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi compiled increased misery on a West Ham side who are yet to seal one victory since the turn of the year, and there have been many reports that technical director Tim Steidten has been assessing managerial alternatives to Moyes.

“I don’t think we can ever please everybody, but I think it would be hard to say there have been many better times at West Ham," said Moyes on his London Stadium tenure.

“I think they’ll (the fans) honestly have to say that it’s as good a time as there’s been at the club regarding winning a trophy (Conference League) and league positions. Maybe they’ll be managers who excite them more, possibly. But the one who’s sitting here wins more.”

The Scotsman appeared to bite back in response to the consistent rumours surrounding his future, and protests from supporters, with a 'Moyes out' banner pictured in the Forest away end.

His contract expires at the end of the season, so time is well and truly running out for the 60-year-old to turn this damp run of form around and earn an extension. Moyes guided West Ham to their first piece of major silverware since the 1980s last term, winning the Europa Conference League in Prague, but their league form since the summer of 2022 has left a lot to be desired at times.

There have been many coaches linked with replacing Moyes in the last fortnight, with an interesting name emerging recently. Indeed, HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that West Ham could offer a route back into English football for under-fire Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel is apparently on West Ham's radar with Steidten said to be a fan. The Hammers chief hopes he'll have a chance to pick their next manager after Moyes, and the former Chelsea boss is a name he'd certainly consider, according to Bailey.

Tuchel in danger of Bayern sack amid West Ham claim

Coming amid this West Ham link, it is believed by The Sun that Tuchel is in danger of being sacked by Bayern, with the German giants falling far behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race after a defeat to Bochum over the weekend.

Tuchel is apparently "on the brink", and if things don't turn around quickly, that may well become a reality. The 50-year-old is highly decorated, winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, and defender Ben Chilwell has called him an "unbelievable" manager.

"As players we have full confidence in the manager – we know we’re not going to get a better manager here," said Chilwell in 2022.

"I’m not just saying it. He’s an unbelievable manager in all aspects and I think he has a lot of trust in us as well."
