'I do really enjoy them' – Phehlukwayo lapping up the high-pressure moments

The South Africa pacer on his thinking coming in to bowl the final over against Pakistan in the previous T20I, and how he held his nerve to seal the deal

Ahead of the last match of Pakistan’s tour, Andile Phehlukwayo reflected on his nerveless final over at the Wanderers that sealed the T20 series for South Africa. Pakistan needed 15 from the final six deliveries with Shoaib Malik at the crease, Phehlukwayo gave away just seven runs and picked up two wickets. It was a high-pressure moment, but Phehlukwayo insisted: “I do really enjoy them.””I always land up in those situations,” he said. “I do really enjoy them. Sometimes it won’t go your way and you’ll be criticised, sometimes it will. It’s really nice when it does go your way, but when it doesn’t you need to pick your head up and go through your training and remember the things that worked well.Whatever drills coach Ottis Gibson is running at training, they are clearly working. But being ice cool at the death is a skill that Phehlukwayo has demonstrated before in domestic cricket, so he also has experience to draw from. Indeed, it was his match-winning performances with the ball for Dolphins in South Africa’s domestic T20 competition that first brought Phehlukwayo into the spotlight: in the 2015-16 season, he was their leading wicket-taker in the competition as Dolphins reached the final, and subsequently earned himself a place in the South African XI that played against a touring England side in Kimberley, further raising his stocks.”David [Miller], before the last over, told me I was going to bowl the last over,” Phehlukwayo said of the Wanderers T20I. “It’s a situation that I’ve been in in the field before for the Dolphins, so I tried to think of options and we were debating and talking about different fields we could have, different variations, plans to bowl to a certain batter. I just took it back to previously, when I’ve done it before, the things I did, the training sessions, what works and what doesn’t.””At the Dolphins I was put into those positions quite a lot with Lance [Klusener, former Dolphins coach] there, so you learn to take responsibility, ownership. And if you’re put in the situation, you want to achieve. Every player wants to win big moments. It won’t always go your way, but the more often you’re in those situations, the more you’ll get it right.”While Phehlukwayo sealed the game – and the series – for South Africa, there have been match-turning performances from several players. South Africa’s 2-0 series lead over the world’s top rated T20I side is all the more remarkable given the rotation and experimentation in South Africa’s white-ball cricket at the moment. Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock, two of their most experienced campaigners, were not even part of the second match, but in their absence debutants Janneman Malan and Lutho Sipamla contributed performances which suggested they should be at home at this level.”Every individual that has come into the squad has put in a performance,” Phehlukwayo said. “The depth in the system is obviously showing. There have been a lot of changes in the individuals who have been playing, but they’ve put up their hands and they’ve contributed. The confidence that we’re taking from this series is really good, because they’re No. 1 in the world in T20 cricket. We pride ourselves on playing good, positive cricket.”While the format is different, any sort of limited-overs cricket that South Africa play between now and the World Cup will be scrutinised with that tournament in mind, and in this regard Phehlukwayo suggested that the heart-stopping denouement to Sunday’s game will provide experience that could prove invaluable at the global tournament in three and a half month’s time.”It’s really crucial, because those type of moments are moments that are going to happen at the World Cup,” he said. “Big crowd, tough situation, best team in the world. It’s going to happen. We’ll take that in and we’ll remember it. More often than not if we have those types of situations and we win, it’s good for us to remember that feeling. But even when it doesn’t go our way, we also need to learn from those types of situations. It’s always nice to go back to the dressing room, sit down, debate what could have gone wrong, what could have gone right.”While he is rapidly staking a claim to be a part of South Africa’s World Cup squad – and possibly even their ideal candidate for the No. 7 position – it’s important to remember that Phehlukwayo is only 22 years old and still developing as a cricketer. He clearly has the skills, but he’s also learning as he goes.”I’ve learned quite a lot of things,” Phehlukwayo said. “There are aspects of my game that I still need to improve. I’m growing every day, talking to a couple of guys in the changing rooms, sharing information, talking to other guys, opposition. And just the relationship between the players. You grow a lot when you’re sharing things and experiencing things on the field, especially when you’re playing a lot of cricket. So the player I was three years ago and the player I am now, it’s really a lot of mental stuff. The ability to perform is still there. Hopefully I can still grow and become better and put in consistent performances. Sometimes you’ll have ups and downs, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.”

Celtic keeping tabs on "super talented" ace who is wanted by several clubs

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers looks to be drawing up his plans for the January window and now it has emerged that the Scottish Premiership champions are embroiled in a race to sign a highly-rated midfielder.

Celtic gear up for Scottish Premiership return…

At present, Celtic players are either on international duty or reporting to Lennoxtown for mid-break training as they await the return of Scottish Premiership action on November 25th, where the Hoops will take on Motherwell at Parkhead. In some positive news involving one Hoops player who is away with his native national side, Marco Tilio made his long-awaited return from injury to feature for Australia Under-23's in a 2-1 friendly victory over Qatar.

Republic of Ireland international Liam Scales, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Celtic this campaign after previously looking set to depart for Aberdeen in the summer, has also enjoyed a commendable time of things on international duty from a personal perspective, recording an impressive Fotmob rating of 7.1/10 for his exploits in a 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands in EURO 2024 qualifying over in Amsterdam.

Nevertheless, Rodgers will undoubtedly be keen for club action to return and will also be casting an eye towards the January transfer window as he looks to add extra squad depth.Recent reports from Germany have intimated that versatile Nurnberg attacker Kanji Okunuki is on the radar at Parkhead after being scouted by Celtic on several occasions.

Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk, who is the son of former Celtic icon Pierre van Hooijdonk, was linked with a move to the Hoops in the summer and has spoken about potentially departing the Serie A outfit in January:

"I’m fine. I’m at a good team and I like life a lot. But I have to do what’s best for my growth. For my career. I also have to play. In football, things can change quickly. There are two months left until January and who knows what will happen? Now, there is Joshua (Zirkzee), who is playing a great season. Do the rumours about my possible transfer bother me? It’s normal when you don’t play."

Now, it has emerged that Hoops manager Rodgers could have a highly-rated young midfielder in his sights this January, according to a fresh report.

Celtic keeping tabs on Lennon Miller

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Celtic are keeping tabs on Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller, despite the fact the 17-year-old recently signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal at Fir Park.

Nevertheless, they will face stiff competition to land the Scotland Under-19 international. Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford and West Ham United are also watching his progress at close quarters.

Miller, who has been labelled "super talented" by Celtic head of academy coaching Steven Hammell, has shown tenacious qualities in the Scottish Premiership this term, completing around 2.6 tackles and one interception on average per league fixture. (Miller statistics – WhoScored)

Catching the eye with his performances, Miller appears to be an exciting prospect that could go on to be a future star for the Scotland national team, making it no surprise that Celtic are taking notice of his development.

Gold Coast's debut something 'a bit different' for T20I

South Africa will look to follow up their one-day series victory by taking the one-off T20 against an Australia side juggling resources

Big PictureWhy are Australia and South Africa playing a one-off T20 international? On the Gold Coast? Because Cricket Australia are seeking to add this long-trumpeted “growth area” for Australian sport to its list of regular and reliable markets. While numerous other sports – be it AFL, A-League soccer or rugby league – have had assorted misadventures trying to situate clubs in an area known for a large but transient population, CA’s approach is driven more by the concept of capitalising on holiday-makers with individual matches rather than setting up an entire team. This fixture is to be followed up by the Big Bash League in December.”The Gold Coast is an unusual market when you think about it,” the head of the BBL, Kim McConnie, said earlier this year. “It’s the sixth-largest city in Australia and at that time of the year [in December], it is a very different market; the influx they have of tourism means the landscape changes pretty significantly. A lot of those tourists are from Sydney and Melbourne, so when we looked at it we thought ‘let’s do something a bit different and bring another team there as well’.”All these largely commercial considerations leave the teams of Aaron Finch and Faf du Plessis pitted against one another for a single contest that appears to be unbalanced by one major factor. While South Africa still have their full bowling attack to call upon, Australia are without Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon due to their concurrent preparation for the Test series against India.Form guideAustralia LLLWL

“Football [has] a situation where it’s playing for your clubs and then there’s an international tournament. In my opinion that’s a good place for T20 cricket to be in, because you shouldn’t be trying to compete with the leagues because they are so strong at the moment.”

Newcastle in talks to sign £13m Lascelles downgrade in January

Newcastle United inherited obscene riches when the club was bought by the PIF back in 2021 but sporting director Dan Ashworth has ensured that money isn't being needlessly spent on players.

Manchester City's early days under Sheikh Mansour were a great reference point for what the Geordie club shouldn't do with their newfound wealth as City spent huge wads of cash on the likes of Jo, Robinho and Nigel de Jong, all of whom didn't last very long at the Etihad Stadium.

The Magpies have been smart with their recruitment, bringing in some hungry, young players with high ceilings for affordable prices, including Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, while the acquisition of Eddie Howe in the hot seat has proven to be a masterstroke thus far from the board.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

With the January transfer window approaching, Newcastle seem to be following the same trend of talent identification and will look to sign one of Serie A's highly-rated centre-backs. However, this target is actually performing worse this season than long-time defender Jamaal Lascelles.

Newcastle transfer news – Radu Dragusin

Newcastle United have been keeping tabs on 21-year-old Radu Dragusin for quite some time and were first linked with signing the Romania international back in September.

However, this past week, in an interview with Turkish outlet Fanatik, via the Express, Dragusin's agent confirmed that he has held talks with the Magpies over potentially acquiring the centre-back in the future, as well as with Premier League leaders Arsenal and even AC Milan.

His agent stated: “I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer and closer. I spoke to Newcastle, to Arsenal, to Tottenham. I also have messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask.

“I want to say that 100% until next summer, Radu will play for a club in the top 10 in the world. He wants to be in the Premier League, but know that Milan likes him very much. I talked to the people there."

Dragusin could well be on his way to St. James' Park in the very near future, with the January window fast approaching, but is the Genoa star much better than what Newcastle United already have?

Radu Dragusin's career so far

Having made merely four appearances in total for Juventus, Romanian centre-half Radu Dragusin was sent out on loan to Serie B side Genoa in 2022 in the hopes of achieving first-team football.

In his first season with Genoa, the side were promoted back to Italy's top flight under former World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino, with Dragusin featuring 40 times for Il Grifone and picking up more goals than yellow cards. Midway through the 2022/23 campaign, Genoa signed the defender permanently for a fee worth £6.6m in total.

Genoa are currently sitting 15th in Serie A after 13 games and Dragusin has started every single game under Gilardino this term, scoring one goal which came during a 4-1 thrashing of Jose Mourinho's Roma back in September. According to the CIES Football Observatory, Dragusin's market value is just £13m after an excellent start to the campaign.

Radu Dragusin's stats this season

Dragusin has been one of Genoa's best players this season and has been a rock at the back for the Italian side as they vie to remain in Serie A. Compared to all other centre-backs in Europe's top-five leagues, the youngster comes out quite favourably, ranking above average in a number of key metrics, with 50% being the median.

When analysing Dragusin's raw defensive ability and set-piece threat, his stats make for really impressive reading.

However, the biggest issue that clubs will have when scouting the centre-half is that Genoa play a very direct style of football which means that Dragusin ranks incredibly low in a whole host of important criterion needed to feature for an attacking side like Newcastle who want to have more of the ball than the opposition.

Genoa have averaged 41.1% of the ball in each game in Serie A this season which is the lowest in the division, meaning Dragusin won't be used to playing consistently in a team that wants to maintain possession and build through the thirds on the deck.

Newcastle head coach Howe will likely see Dragusin as the man to partner alongside Sven Botman in the heart of the defence given that he is right-footed. This means that the 21-year-old will have to contend with both Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar for the starting berth in the team.

However, Lascelles is actually outperforming Dragusin statistically this season and has been sensational at the back for the Magpies amidst an injury crisis at the club.

Both Lascelles and Schar are performing at a much higher level right now than Dragusin, particularly the former who earned a 7.1 Sofascore rating at the weekend as Newcastle ran riot over Chelsea in the Premier League. Dragusin will struggle to break into Howe's side in the short term if Lascelles keeps up his excellent displays at St. James' Park.

Dhawan left out of India's squad for West Indies Tests

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal, a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket, has received his maiden call-up in international cricket

Shikhar Dhawan and Karun Nair have been dropped from the Indian team that will play West Indies in a two-match Test series starting October 4. This means India will try their fifth opening combination of the year with one of Mayank Agarwal or Prithvi Shaw making their Test debut when they walk out alongside KL Rahul in Rajkot next week.Virat Kohli will return to captain India after a three-week break. He’ll have to make do with many of the team’s first choice bowlers unavailable. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested. Ishant Sharma, who picked up an ankle injury during the Oval Test earlier this month, and Hardik Pandya, who suffered back spasms in the Asia Cup, were not considered for selection. In their absence, Mohammed Siraj was called up to the Test side for the first time. Nair, meanwhile, did not get to play in any of the five Tests, and as it happened in the final one at the Oval, he seems to have lost out in a race with reserve batsman Hanuma Vihari. With India needing an opener, Agarwal finally got his reward for a prolific 2017-18 season in which he scored 2253 runs in 36 innings across formats. The 27-year old from Karnataka was a consistent performer for the A team as well, both on tour in England and at home, when he played against Australia A and South Africa A. He also scored 90 off 111 deliveries against the West Indians in the warm-up game earlier on Saturday.ESPNcricinfo LtdR Ashwin, who recently struggled with a hip injury, will lead India’s spin attack again, alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur round off the fast-bowling resources. Burnley in the race to sign teenage striker

Burnley are now in the race to sign Colchester United forward Bradley Ihionvien, with a report revealing that a number of Premier League clubs could be set to do battle for his signature…

Who did Burnley sign in the summer?

The Clarets overhauled their squad in the summer, following the promotion from the Championship last season, and the vast majority of the new arrivals are 25 and under, with manager Vincent Kompany willing to put his faith in a youthful team.

However, the approach is yet to yield any positive results for Kompany's side, who are currently bottom of the Premier League table, having lost their opening three games, although they have faced tough opposition in Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Summer signing Lyle Foster has recently opened up about Burnley's start to the season during his media duties for national side South Africa, saying:

"It's a tough league. You can't make too many mistakes, otherwise you will be punished but I'm enjoying myself and with the young team we have, we can only grow and learn more from this, especially the first three games which were tough and world-class opponents,

"It's a long season ahead, but I believe in this team. We are three games into the season and we can't be pressing panic buttons."

Although it has not been the best of starts to the season, Kompany seemingly remains committed to his approach of signing young players, with Football Insider revealing the Clarets are now in the race for 19-year-old Colchester striker Ihionvien.

However, a whole host of other clubs are keen on signing the youngster, including Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Watford and Norwich City, so there is sure to be stiff competition for his signature.

The "powerful" striker has caught the eye of clubs higher up the football pyramid after impressing for Colchester in the early stages of this season, having made his first-team breakthrough at the back end of the 2021-22 campaign.

As the left-footed forward is out of contract at the end of this season, there is an indication he could be available for a cut-price fee, with Colchester now bracing themselves for interest.

Who is Bradley Ihionvien?

The English youngster came through the youth ranks at Colchester, and he has gone on to establish himself in the first team this season, scoring two goals in 178 minutes of League Two action this season.

The most recent of which came less than five minutes after being brought on as a substitute against Tranmere Rovers, showing manager Ben Garner that he is worthy of a start at home against Mansfield Town this weekend.

It is still very early days in Ihionvien's career, so it is difficult to tell whether he would be able to make the step-up to Burnley, but they should continue to run the rule over him ahead of the January transfer window.

Until then, Kompany will be hoping Foster continues his fine form in front of goal, with the South African finding the back of the net twice in his opening three Premier League games.

Leeds can sign "incredibly" good player with "movement expected"

Leeds United are “one of the clubs” in the race to sign Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer this summer, and a reliable journalist has revealed when to expect developments on a potential move.

Where was Cameron Archer born?

Archer was originally born in Walsall and has been at Villa Park since his childhood days having graduated from the club’s academy to get promoted to the first team back in 2021, but having only ever made 13 senior appearances, he’s spent most of his career out on the road.

The England youth international has carried out three development loans since bursting onto the scene, the first at Solihull Moors, the second at Preston North End and the third and most recent being last season at Middlesbrough, and it sounds like he could now be heading for a permanent exit despite still having four years remaining on his contract.

Read The Latest Leeds Transfer News HERE…

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has reported that the Midlands outfit are “open” to selling the 21-year-old as a result of strong interest from the likes of Sheffield United and Michael Carrick’s side once again, but if the following update is to be believed, Daniel Farke has entered the race with the aim of bringing him to Elland Road.

Are Leeds signing Cameron Archer?

Speaking to GiveMeSport, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs delivered an update on Archer’s future at Aston Villa and name-checked Leeds as a team firmly in the running to secure his signature. He said:

“With Archer, what's interesting is that he's been made for sale now. So there is an opportunity to do that deal. He's had a couple of good loan spells in the Championship including with Middlesbrough and now, Aston Villa are willing to let him go. I think that he put himself in the shop window with I believe, a couple of goals and an assist at the under 21 Euros for England.

"He also scored plenty of goals, he got into double figures for Middlesbrough last season and I think that was only in about 20-odd appearances and he added several assists on top of that. So that can be one to watch because Aston Villa are now prepared to sell him. Leeds are one of the clubs no doubt Middlesbrough are another. So I would expect movement on Archer between now and the end of the window."

Middlesbrough's former loan striker Cameron Archer.

How many goals has Cameron Archer scored?

At Middlesbrough last season, Archer posted a remarkable 17 goal contributions (11 goals and six assists) in 23 appearances, with this form having seen him hailed “incredibly prolific” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, so should he put pen to paper, it would be a massive coup for Leeds.

Villa’s £20k-per-week earner also has the versatility to operate everywhere across the frontline so he would be a great option for Farke to have in the building, not only in terms of being able to cover for injuries in other roles but additionally if the boss ever wanted to switch up his team selection to have multiple top players out on the pitch together.

Furthermore, the centre-forward shares the same agent, Unique Sports Group, as Karl Darlow, so this existing connection that his representative already has to the club could give them a small advantage should they try to get a deal over the line.

The Whites have also been heavily linked with a swoop for Everton striker Tom Cannon, but with the need for attacking reinforcements strong, Archer could be following in the formerly mentioned player’s footsteps to walk through the doors as a pair before September 1st.
