Newcastle have “financial resources” to sign "great player" this summer

Newcastle United reportedly have the "financial resources" at their disposal to complete the signing of a "great player" this summer, with the individual in question a wanted man.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies will want to enjoy a significant summer in the transfer market, having gone backwards this season after their superb 2022/23 campaign. Granted, Eddie Howe still has an excellent squad when everyone is fit and firing, but too many players are injury-prone, and bringing some new blood will add a freshness to the group.

Sven Botman's long-term ACL injury means centre-back targets could be at the forefront of PIF's thinking at the end of the campaign, with Sporting CP duo Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande both once again linked with moves to St James' Park in a recent report.

ousmane-diomande-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

Hugely exciting young RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko has also been seen as an option for the Magpies this summer, possibly coming in as Callum Wilson's replacement should he depart in the coming months. The Englishman's current deal expires next year, meaning 2024 is Newcastle's last chance to realistically receive a fair amount of money for his services.

Elsewhere, Shakhtar Donetsk maestro Georgiy Sudakov is another target for the Premier League giants, having already registered 29 goal contributions (15 goals and 14 assists) in 91 appearances for his current side at the age of just 21.

Newcastle want to sign "great player"

Now, a fresh transfer rumour has emerged, with Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness] reporting that Newcastle are still interested in signing Dean Huijsen this summer, and have the "financial resources" to snap up the highly rated Juventus centre-back.

However, the report does stress that the 18-year-old has "many admirers abroad", so there could be a big battle to acquire his signature when the summer arrives; and in any case, Juve see him as a prized asset they are reluctant to let leave at any point in the near future.

Dean Huijsen in action for Roma.

Huijsen is a player with a frightening amount of potential, so the idea of Newcastle signing him over others this summer is a mouthwatering prospect for the supporters.

Assuming Botman makes a full recovery from his huge ACL setback, the Magpies need to look at signing a young long-term partner for the Dutchman at the back; with Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles both in their 30s, the Juve ace would represent a great option. Manager Massimiliano Allegri is under no illusions as to how impressive Huijsen is as a player, praising him after his debut earlier in the season and comparing him to a former defensive great at the club:

"Huijsen entered the game serene and calm, he never played complicated passes and never put his teammate in difficulty. He reads the game like a great player. He does things like Ciro Ferrara.

“Dean worked with the tranquility and serenity of a thirty-year-old."

It’s safe to say he’s had a dramatic fall since leaving Newcastle.

Whether Juve allow Huijsen to move on this summer is certainly up for debate, but the fact that Newcastle are in the race to sign him says so much about the progress made by the club, even if this season has been a disappointment.

Last Dance: Is this Copa America the final run for Lionel Messi era at Argentina?

With the legendary attacker's career nearing an end, is this the final starring role for his country?

You may have seen it. A video went viral a couple weeks back showing Argentina emerging from the locker room ahead of their opening round Copa America clash with Canada. A team full of superstars, Argentina's starters were seen stationed in the hallway, each doing their own thing, until, suddenly, Lionel Messi appeared. Immediately, every man fell in line. They marched together like wolves, with Messi clearly the alpha of this pack on the way to battle.

It almost looked scripted, something out of a movie, and Messi was the clear main character. Social media commenters compared him to Tommy Shelby and other gang leaders, one that commands respect the moment he enters a room. Others chimed in on his aura. Whatever your thoughts, the video made one thing abundantly clear: this Argentinian team, as good as they are as individuals, is collectively ready to follow this man wherever he leads.

That's the power of Messi and, in recent years, that power has become less a weight and more a rallying cry. For so many years, Argentina seemed afraid of falling short, but this team's mentality is different. Argentina is no longer concerned about letting Messi down. Instead, they're singularly determined to lift the man up.

It's been the defining factor of these last few years, a historic run for this team. World Cup and Copa America winners, Argentina are on the path to another Copa America final. As they prepare for face Canada in Tuesday night's semifinal at MetLife Stadium, it's time to reflect on an Argentina run that, for the first time in recent memory, has NOT been defined by Messi.

The charismatic aura is still there, as is supreme leadership, but the goals haven't been. He's played a major role, but not neccesarily a starring role. Instead, Messi's Argentina teammates have done the heavy lifting that was solely on him to shoulder for so long. And because of that, this feels like a summer in which this team is between eras or, perhaps, transitioning to a new one.

The Messi Era is nearing an end and a new post-Messi run will soon begin. For now, though, it feels as if this Argentina team is more than equipped to lift their talisman at least one more time.

GettyMessi's team becomes a team

For much of the winger's career, it felt as if Argentina's hopes lived and died with Messi. It also felt like no one was more aware of that fact than the man himself. The amount of pressure so often weighed him back down to a place where mere mortals were then able to compete with him. That showed itself often in the biggest of moments, most notably, in the 2016 Copa America final, when he missed a penalty that could have helped his country claim its first trophy of his era.

That weight wasn't just on Messi's shoulders but on those of his teammates. At times, Argentina's other stars seemed to carve out their own roles. Everyone was so worried about Messi, that, at times, it felt like they didn't know what to do themselves.

That all changed over the last few years as Argentina constructed a group that has parts that fit. Messi is the figurehead, of course, but this team is still perhaps the best in the world when it comes to players simply knowing their roles.

Everyone has a part to play and some are more glamorous than others, but each player that puts on a shirt steps onto the field knowing what they need to do. From young stars such as Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez to veteran presences like Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi, this team has become… well, a team, and one to be reckoned with.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesA slower Copa America

This summer, as Argentina reached the Copa America semis, you've seen a generational shift start to take hold as Messi begins to slow down.

Hampered by a slight injury, Messi has yet to score a goal in three appearances at this summer's Copa. He has played a part, often turning provider, although he doesn't officially have an assist on record. Di Maria, too, has yet to score.

Messi hasn't quite been dominant, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been effective. Against Canada the first time, he created mujltiple chances and was unlucky not to score. He's still a player that commands attention, but those magic moments aren't coming quite as often as they did just a few years ago.

After missing out on the group stage finale against Peru, Messi was back in the XI for Argentina's penalty kick shootout win over Ecuador in the quarterfinals. Thanks to a rare Messi mishap, though, Argentian will count themselves lucky to have survived that match.

GettyA metaphorical moment

The last time that the Copa America was on U.S. soil, there was nothing Messi could do but watch. He'd missed his penalty in the shootout against Chile, leading to Argentina's demise. It wasn't all on him, but he sure felt that was – and actually briefly retired from Argentina duty after the game.

Argentina's quarterfinal clash with Ecuador last week must have felt like some awful deja vu. Messi, once again, stepped up first and, once again, missed. His panenka attempt was just too high. Once again, Argentina's fate would be left in his teammate's hands.

This time, though, they stepped up. It felt like a true sign of what this team has become: Messi is the unequivocal leader, but this group has his back.

Emiliano Martinez perhaps most of all. The Aston Villa goalkeeper might just be the best shootout specialist in the world. His goalkeeping is fantastic and his mind games are even better. Love him or hate him, Martinez is fantastic in these moments. After the match, Messi hailed Martinez as "the best goalkeeper in the world". He might be right.

Alvarez, Otamendi, Alexis Mac Allister and Gonzalo Montiel – they all stepped up after Messi, and each buried from the spot. Otamendi's finish was decisive, and, after scoring, the defender ripped off his shirt, revealing, among others, a tattoo of Messi.

The Argentinian icon is still the focal point, but this Argentina team is one that is more prepared than ever for the inevitable moment when that's no longer the case.

Getty ImagesThe others stepping up

Messi was unstoppable during Argentina's 2021 Copa America run. He scored four goals in that tournament, winning the Golden Boot while winning a share of the Best Player award alongside longtime friend and teammate Neymar.

If Argentina does win this thing, one of their star attackers will likely claim both of those awards – but it won't be Messi.

For years, Argentina fans have been waiting for Lautaro Martinez to bring his club form to the national team – it's now safe to say he has. The Inter star has four goals in four games, only two of which were starts. He's the favorite for the Golden Boot and, right now, Argentina's most dangerous goal threat.

It's not just about goalscorers, though. Mac Allister is dominating the midfield on both sides of the ball, leading a unit that has a remarkable amount of talent. Fernandez, Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes have all been the perfect puzzle pieces.

And defensively, the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero has been near-perfect. There may not be a better duo on the international stage right now, at least if we're talking about form. And then there's Emi Martinez, who is almost unbeatable, especially once he gets his confidence going.

This Argentina squad is deep from top to bottom. Messi now has a group behind him that has the ability to both follow his lead and lift him up in his moments of need.

Manager on brink of exit after claim West Ham could replace Moyes with him

A manager is in danger of leaving his current club after claims that West Ham could offer him the job to replace David Moyes.

Moyes under more pressure after Forest defeat

2024 is beginning to look like a year to forget for Moyes, who is now under even more pressure after a 2-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest last weekend.

"Exceptional" manager wants to replace David Moyes at West Ham

It was another defeat on the weekend.

ByCharlie Smith Feb 19, 2024

Goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi compiled increased misery on a West Ham side who are yet to seal one victory since the turn of the year, and there have been many reports that technical director Tim Steidten has been assessing managerial alternatives to Moyes.

“I don’t think we can ever please everybody, but I think it would be hard to say there have been many better times at West Ham," said Moyes on his London Stadium tenure.

“I think they’ll (the fans) honestly have to say that it’s as good a time as there’s been at the club regarding winning a trophy (Conference League) and league positions. Maybe they’ll be managers who excite them more, possibly. But the one who’s sitting here wins more.”

The Scotsman appeared to bite back in response to the consistent rumours surrounding his future, and protests from supporters, with a 'Moyes out' banner pictured in the Forest away end.

His contract expires at the end of the season, so time is well and truly running out for the 60-year-old to turn this damp run of form around and earn an extension. Moyes guided West Ham to their first piece of major silverware since the 1980s last term, winning the Europa Conference League in Prague, but their league form since the summer of 2022 has left a lot to be desired at times.

There have been many coaches linked with replacing Moyes in the last fortnight, with an interesting name emerging recently. Indeed, HITC and journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that West Ham could offer a route back into English football for under-fire Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel is apparently on West Ham's radar with Steidten said to be a fan. The Hammers chief hopes he'll have a chance to pick their next manager after Moyes, and the former Chelsea boss is a name he'd certainly consider, according to Bailey.

Tuchel in danger of Bayern sack amid West Ham claim

Coming amid this West Ham link, it is believed by The Sun that Tuchel is in danger of being sacked by Bayern, with the German giants falling far behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race after a defeat to Bochum over the weekend.

Tuchel is apparently "on the brink", and if things don't turn around quickly, that may well become a reality. The 50-year-old is highly decorated, winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, and defender Ben Chilwell has called him an "unbelievable" manager.

"As players we have full confidence in the manager – we know we’re not going to get a better manager here," said Chilwell in 2022.

"I’m not just saying it. He’s an unbelievable manager in all aspects and I think he has a lot of trust in us as well."

When Celtic fumbled the chance to sign a now £100m Premier League star

Celtic's search for a centre-forward during the recent January transfer window went down to the wire as they secured a number nine on deadline day.

The Scottish giants brought in Ireland international Adam Idah from English Championship side Norwich City on loan until the end of the season.

Interestingly, reported Hoops target Sydney van Hooijdonk turned out to be the Canaries' replacement for the Irish forward as they snapped him up from Bologna on loan with an option to buy.

Norwich forward Adam Idah.

Idah has already enjoyed a terrific start to life at Parkhead with two goals and one assist in his first two Scottish Premiership appearances for the Bhoys, which means that he was directly involved in all three of the side's goals in those outings.

The Norwich academy graduate will be hoping for a successful end to the season and establish himself as a memorable striker for Celtic, even if his spell does not extend beyond the summer.

When Celtic missed out on Ivan Toney

One centre-forward who could have become an icon at Parkhead had the club secured a deal for his services back in the summer of 2020 is England international Ivan Toney.

The prolific marksman was plying his trade for Peterborough in the third division of English football at the time and was set to make a move away from the East Anglian side.

Ivan Toney

Speaking on Steven Bartlett's Diary of a CEO podcast last summer, the impressive attacker revealed that he went up to Scotland to hold talks with Celtic over a potential move to Glasgow ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

However, Toney claimed that a desire to be the main man for his next club caused him to decide against a switch to the Scottish giants, who wanted him to be one of three possible first-choice options for them at the top end of the pitch.

The English gem went on to say that Thomas Frank confirmed that he would be the main man and go-to number nine for Brentford straight away, which is what convinced him to pick the Bees ahead of Celtic, and Rangers who were also competing for his signature.

A then-Championship side, Brentford snapped him up for a fee of £5m, rising to potentially £10m with add-ons, after his prolific spell with Peterborough.

As you can see in the table above, the Posh star was heading into the summer of 2020 off the back of a sublime campaign in League One for his club, as he showcased his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals on a regular basis.

Celtic, managed by Neil Lennon at the time, were not willing to put faith in him to be their main man for goals off the back of that impressive season, though, and that led to him rejecting the Hoops to sign for Brentford.

Ivan Toney's goal record at Brentford

The 27-year-old sensation, who recently returned from an eight-month ban for 232 breaches of the Football Association's betting rules, has scored 71 goals in 128 matches for the Bees to date.

He hit the ground running with Frank's side in the Championship during the 2020/21 campaign and proved that Celtic made a mistake instantly.

dominic-solanke-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion

Toney racked up a staggering return of 33 goals and ten assists in 47 league appearances, including the play-offs, for Brentford to help them achieve promotion to the Premier League.

It was then down to the former Celtic and Rangers target to prove himself in the top-flight of football in England and the superb gem has done exactly that over the last three seasons.

The experienced striker produced 12 goals and five assists in 33 matches in his first campaign with the Bees at that level before firing in 20 goals in 33 Premier League games the following term.

Since his return in January, Toney has scored three goals in four league appearances for Brentford so far this season, which takes his tally to 35 goals and nine assists in 72 top-flight outings.

The one-time England international, who was once described as a "monster" by his manager Frank, is now being looked at by huge clubs and valued at a staggering price.

Ivan Toney's current market value

According to the Evening Standard, back in January, Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea both have a long-standing interest in the attacker.

The report added that Brentford want a whopping fee of up to £100m for their star striker, who has proven himself to be a reliable scorer at the top level.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

This means that his value has soared by a mind-blowing 1,900% from the initial £5m that the Bees paid Peterborough to secure his services less than four years ago. It would still be a huge increase of 900% if all of the add-ons to take it to £10m have been activated.

Brentford took a gamble on Toney and placed their faith in him to be the main man straight away, after his impressive form in League One, and they have been richly rewarded for that decision over the subsequent years.

His goals led them to promotion and have helped to keep them in the Premier League for two years and counting, whilst they could now make a sensational profit in the summer transfer window if a team comes in and meets their valuation.

Perhaps the most damning part of all of this is that no Celtic player, in any position, scored more than 18 Premiership goals during the 2020/21 campaign or more than 13 throughout the 2021/22 season.

Meanwhile, Toney scored 33 league goals in the 2020/21 term and hit 20 goals in the Premier League for Brentford last season, which has contributed to his soaring market value.

This is all with the benefit of hindsight but, ultimately, Lennon's reluctance to promise the Peterborough star that he would be the main marksman for the Hoops has turned out to be a huge blunder on his part.

Celtic fumbled an opportunity to sign a now-Premier League sensation, who is currently valued at £100m, for just £5m, rising to £10m, in 2020 and this is a cautionary tale that they should heed if they discover another emerging talent like him in the future.

Aston Villa star who lost the ball 16x was as bad as Bailey v Everton

Aston Villa failed to win their third game on the bounce at Goodison Park this weekend, as they were held to a drab 0-0 draw by Everton.

This was Unai Emery’s 11th away match of the season, yet they’ve only won four, which is extremely poor compared to their home form this campaign.

How Everton v Aston Villa played out

Villa thought they had taken the lead in the first half through a powerful strike from Alex Moreno, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The game was even in the first half, however, Emi Martinez will be thanked for his vital stop against Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a 1v1 scenario when the English attacker simply had to score.

In the second half, the Villans dominated the tie and racked up 0.81 xG, but they failed to really test Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal. The best chance of the half fell to Matty Cash, who had his low effort blocked inside the box.

Unai Emery

The Spaniard will be disappointed that his side were unable to pick up three points and further distance themselves from those fighting for a top-four spot. Some individuals were particularly frustrating in Merseyside, but in truth, it was a bad day at the office for all involved.

Leon Bailey had a relatively quiet afternoon and failed to impress, but John McGinn was the player who was far from his best and struggled against the physical Toffees midfield.

Leon Bailey’s game vs Everton by numbers

Bailey was fielded in his usual right midfield role in the 4-4-2 variant, but the Jamaican was marked out of the game by the relentless Vitaily Mykolenko, who didn’t give the forward an inch.

The winger wasn’t particularly wasteful in possession, as he had 79% pass accuracy, but other than one key pass, he failed to cause Sean Dyche’s backline any issues. This is highlighted by his xG of 0.07 and his expected assists (xA) of 0.05.

Bailey failed to make a single successful dribble in the game, and he also lost all three of his duels. The 26-year-old was ultimately subbed just after the hour mark, which sums up his level of threat throughout the game.

John McGinn’s stats vs Everton

McGinn is usually the energetic midfielder who demands high standards of himself and those around him, which is why he wears the captain’s armband. However, his performance against Everton was one of his worst this season.

Indeed, John Townley of Birmingham Mail offered the following summation at full-time: "McGinn is always dangerous on the half turn, but he was sloppy in possession today."

John McGinn

The Scotland international received a 6.8 rating via Sofascore, with the dynamic and hard-working Everton midfield trio running all over him. The table below highlights his performances using a handful of stats.

The biggest concern in the game was how wasteful the midfielder was in possession, especially when attempting to force the issue down the left-hand side. This led to him giving the ball away 16 times, the second most for a Villa player behind Moreno.

Furthermore, McGinn is usually tenacious out of possession, but today he failed to make a single defensive action bar one clearance. The 29-year-old also failed to win half of his individual battles on the field, as shown by the five out of ten ground duels won.

Nothing will come from this performance in terms of McGinn’s place in the side, but it was certainly an afternoon to forget for the Scottish midfielder.

Predicted Aston Villa XI vs Burnley including "outstanding" whiz and no Bailey

Aston Villa return to Premier League action this afternoon as they travel away from Birmingham to take on Sean Dyche's Everton at Goodison Park.

The Villans were in FA Cup action last weekend as they secured a 1-0 win away at Championship side Middlesbrough, who then went on to beat Chelsea in the League Cup a few days later.

Unai Emery's side booked their place in the fourth round of the competition and will now face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – 12 days after their clash with the Toffees.

The Spanish head coach could look to make alterations to the starting XI that defeated Middlesbrough last time out, and here is FFC's predicted Villa line-up to take on Everton – with five changes…

1 Emiliano Martinez

In between the sticks, Emiliano Martinez should make his 20th start in the top-flight this season, having been the number one throughout the campaign so far.

The Argentina international has enjoyed a save success rate of 68% so far and has prevented 1.14 goals more than expected based on Expected Goals, which shows that he has been an above average performer in goal.

2 Ezri Konsa

Ezri Konsa

Emery could keep Ezri Konsa in the starting XI but move him from centre-back to the right side of the back four ahead of Matty Cash to accommodate the next two players in this predicted team.

The English titan has started 20 Premier League matches so far this season and completed 92% of his attempted passes, which shows that he has been supremely reliable in possession.

3 Diego Carlos

At the heart of the defence, Diego Carlos could be recalled to the starting XI after being given a rest as an unused substitute in the FA Cup.

The Brazilian enforcer has started ten Premier League games so far this season and won 57% of his individual duels, which shows that he has been solid in physical contests with opposition forwards.

4 Pau Torres

Aston Villa central defender Pau Torres.

On the left of the centre-back pairing, Emery could bring Pau Torres in. The Spaniard has returned to training ahead of the match and could be fit enough to start.

He has been crucial to how Villa build out from the back with his fantastic ability in possession. The former Villarreal star currently ranks within the top 13% of Premier League centre-backs for progressive passes (5.63) and the top 2% for progressive carries (1.84) per 90 this season.

These statistics show that Torres is among the best in the division when it comes to progressing play through carries and passes, which could help the Villans to break down Everton's defence.

5 Alex Moreno

Aston Villa'sAlexMoreno.

At left-back, Alex Moreno could keep his place in the side as Lucas Digne remains unavailable to the head coach. The French full-back could make his comeback against Chelsea in the FA Cup towards the end of this month.

Moreno only has two Premier League starts to his name this term and Digne's continued absence provides him with a huge opportunity to impress the manager.

6 Boubacar Kamara

boubacar-kamara-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

In the middle of the park, Boubacar Kamara should start once again. He has made 16 appearances in the league this season and showcased his defensive skill with 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game to cut out opposition attacks and win possession back for his team.

7 Douglas Luiz

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

Alongside the French ace, Douglas Luiz should be brought back into the starting XI ahead of Leander Dendoncker, who started against Boro.

The Brazil international has been a star performer for the Villans in the Premier League so far this season and has started 19 games to date.

Luiz has contributed with six goals, three assists, and five 'big chances' created from a central midfield position and could be needed to make the difference this afternoon.

8 Moussa Diaby

On the right of the attacking midfield trio, Moussa Diaby could be brought back into the XI ahead of Leon Bailey – who started against Middlesbrough.

The French whiz scored in his last start – against Burnley – and has racked up four goals, four assists, and seven 'big chances' created in 16 top-flight starts.

Bailey, who failed to score or assist against Boro, has one goal in his last six appearances in all competitions and could drop out of the side for this clash.

Diaby, who was once hailed as "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting, could look to use his electric pace to cause Vitaliy Mykolenko constant problems down the flank, in the hope of adding to his tally of goals and assists since his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen.

9 John McGinn

John McGinn

Another player who could keep their place in the side is captain John McGinn, who has started all 20 of the club's Premier League games this season.

The Scotland international will be looking to add to his return of five goals, two assists, and seven 'big chances' for the Villans so far this term.

10 Jacob Ramsey

Jacob-ramsey-villa

Emery could keep faith with academy graduate Jacob Ramsey on the left of the attacking midfield trident after his impressive showing against Middlesbrough.

The England U21 international played the full 90 minutes on the left flank and caught the eye with his play in and out of possession for the Villans.

He completed 91% of his attempted passes and created three chances for his teammates, which shows that the forward took risks on the ball to make things happen whilst still being reliable.

Ramsey also kept working hard to win the ball back for his side with four tackles, one block, and one clearance, which shows that he has the quality to make an impact in and out of possession.

Blow for Poch: Fabrizio Romano shares Chelsea injury news on Marc Cucurella

Spending big in the summer, Chelsea may have been hoping to make their return to the Premier League's top four this season, having also welcomed Mauricio Pochettino prior to pre-season. Yet, as we approach the halfway mark, the Blues sit 12 points adrift of the Champions League places with defeats against Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Everton to their name. It has been a disappointing first few months for Pochettino, who has reportedly been dealt yet another blow.

After losing Reece James to yet another injury, the last thing Chelsea needed was more bad news. But following defeat against Everton, it looks as though the Blues were handed another injury blow.

Chelsea injury news

As poor as Chelsea have been this season, they have been unfortunate with injuries at times. As things stand, Chelsea's injury list currently sits at nine players, with Marc Cucurella the latest to be added to that list. The left-back suffered the injury in the defeat against Everton and will now miss an extended spell of action at a vital point of the campaign.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano's daily briefing for Caught Offside on Sunday, Cucurella is set to be out injured until February. Adding to Chelsea's woes, their injury list makes for frustrating reading.

With that said, Chelsea's struggles, in part, are understandable even if they should still be in a position to avoid defeat against those competing in the bottom half of the Premier League. Pochettino may just hope that when he has a full squad available, the Blues are finally firing on all cylinders again.

"Spectacular" Cucurella needed more than ever at Chelsea

Cucurella has had his critics at Chelsea, but with Chillwell out injured and Lewis Hall now at Newcastle United, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man had the perfect opportunity to step up and make the left-back spot his own under Pochettino. Injury struck, however, and now the Blues must look elsewhere for a solution down the left-hand side. The Spaniard will miss the busy festive period, as well as crucial games in January and February in what could be a costly spell in Chelsea's pursuit of restoring some dignity to what has so far been a disastrous campaign under Pochettino.

At his best, Cucurella has been praised during his time at Chelsea, including by former Barcelona B teammate and current Real Oviedo man Rodrigo Tarín, who said:

"What he’s done is practically impossible. To go from an academy like Barcelona’s to clubs that are totally different, polar opposites, in consecutive summers and adapt is spectacular. You never know how good a player is until he’s competing, and every time Cucu’s stepped up he has carried on at exactly the same level, with the same personality. Which is why it wouldn’t surprise if he plays well at Chelsea.”

Hodge: Jos Buttler’s form will be key to Royals’ chances

Big PictureA year after picking up bans for the infamous ball-tampering episode, Steven Smith and David Warner come face to face. Too much time has passed for the Newlands scandal to remain relevant in the IPL context, of course, but Jos Buttler’s mankading incident has – albeit unwittingly – kept the spirit of controversy alive. If Rajasthan Royals – Smith and Buttler’s team – had hoped for the seeming injustice of it to have inspired them, the signs weren’t encouraging. Instead of a steely resolve to get home, on view were panic and self destruction. Those are precise feelings that Sunrisers Hyderabad have traditionally sparked in their opponents. Although Sunrisers’ well laid-out plans came a cropper against a rampaging Andre Russell, it was only the third time they lost after posting a total in excess of 180 – that says something about the abnormality of their display in Kolkata on Sunday.David Warner has a hard kick at the football•PTI

Now, they are back home, where they have won 15 of their last 21 matches since 2016 – the best win percentage for any team at home during the period. Plus, they should have regular captain Kane Williamson – who missed their first game with injury – back, although the final decision on him will only be taken on match day. Williamson hit the nets in Hyderabad on the eve of the match and even the day before that. If he’s back, whom do they leave out? Warner batted like he was never away for a 53-ball 85, and his partner, Jonny Bairstow aided him nicely on debut, contributing a 35-ball 39 in a 118-run opening stand. They might feel slightly bittersweet about separating them so soon, but it seems like the only viable move. For Royals, who made a late surge for the playoffs last year through Buttler’s exploits at the top, the problem of a misfiring middle-order appears chronic. They need a little more consistency from their batting support cast – the likes of Rahul Tripathi, K Gowtham and Shreyas Gopal. Given the spin-friendly nature of the Hyderabad surface, there could be a case for Ish Sodhi’s inclusion. But for that they’ll have to leave out the highly-rated Jofra Archer.Likely XIsSunrisers Hyderabad (probable): 1 David Warner, 2 Kane Williamson/Jonny Bairstow, 3 Vijay Shankar, 4 Yusuf Pathan, 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Deepak Hooda, 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Siddarth KaulRajasthan Royals (probable): 1 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 2 Jos Buttler, 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Rahul Tripathi, 7 K Gowtham, 8 Shreyas Gopal, 9 Jofra Archer/Ish Sodhi, 10 Jaydev Unadkat, 11 Dhawal KulkarniStrategy punt In 13 IPL innings, Ajinkya Rahane has fallen to Bhuvneshwar Kumar six times, managing just 71 runs from 78 balls. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, when Bhuvneshwar plays, Rahane has just two fifties in nine appearances, falling to the seamer on four occasions, and thrice for a duck. Given that the two are bound to come up against each other by virtue of opening the batting and bowling for their respective sides, seeing Bhuvneshwar off might be Rahane’s best bet to come good against Sunrisers. Since last season, both Sunrisers and Royals have been heavily dependent on a contribution from the top three batsmen. Royals marginally more so, with the top three accounting for 61.6% of their total team runs as opposed to 60.8% for the Sunrisers.Stats that matter Sunrisers and Royals were the worst in terms of scoring rate in the death overs last season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is four wickets away from becoming the first Sunrisers bowler to 100 Ajinkya Rahane is 56 short of aggregating 2500 runs for Royals in the IPL Jaydev Unadkat is four short of 150 T20 wickets
