Sean Dyche fuming at Bruno Fernandes moment in Man Utd draw at Nottingham Forest

Amad Diallo’s delightful volley continued Manchester United’s unbeaten run and extended Sean Dyche’s wait for his first Premier League win as Nottingham Forest manager.

United arrived on a run of three straight wins and Diallo’s late volley rescued a 2-2 draw, which was probably a fair result at the end of a helter-skelter encounter that the Red Devils went ahead in, albeit under controversial circumstances.

The City Ground faithful were left furioius at the decision to award the corner from which Casemiro headed home the opening goal, and Dyche also highlighted Bruno Fernandes’ placement of the ball outside the quadrant, speaking to Sky Sports.

“It’s not inconclusive, I’ve seen it back,” the 54 year-old said afer Nicolo Savona was adjudged to have taken the ball out of play.

He continued: “Funny enough I was talking to the powers at be, the referees, about the quadrant. We all watch it, you can see the ball is outside the quadrant from 80 yards away, but they allow it because it’s one millimetre with the ball hanging over the line, a bit like the goal line technology.

“So apparently today the assistant referee can see 70, 80 yards away, it’s got to change.”

Dyche’s men returned after half-time interval with the bit between their teeth and levelled three minutes after the restart. Substitute Yates clipped over a cross from the right and Gibbs-White held off Diallo to get away a header that crept inside the far post.

It looked like Savona would have the last laugh too, coolly scoring in the 50th minute. Another cross from the right took a deflection and looped up, with the ball bundled on as Jesus challenged with United players. The Italian was the beneficiary, taking a touch and finishing from six yards.

United tried to level and Fernandes came closest, seeing a hopeful long-range strike skip off the turf and hit the far post. Casemiro just failed to turn home the rebound.

Manchester United have found their next Amad

Jesus headed into the side-netting and Hudson-Odoi went close as Forest pushed to settle things, only for Diallo’s moment of magic to draw United level in the 81st minute.

Forest failed to effectively clear a corner and the Ivory Coast international unleashed a wonderful left-footed volley from the edge of the box that flew past Sels, sparking bedlam in the away end.

The goal was given after a VAR check and United pushed hardest for a winner, with Murillo stopping Diallo snatching victory in stoppage time.

Australia captain Pat Cummins became the eighth from his country to 300 Test wickets as his 6 for 28, the best by a captain at Lord’s, dismantled South Africa on the second day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final. It meant that, for the first time in Test history, a bowling attack had three players with 300 or more wickets: Cummins joined Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon in the group. Josh Hazlewood sits on 280.”It’s great, and I’ve got some family here, which is nice,” Cummins told the host broadcast at the innings break. “It’s way, more than I could have asked for. For any fast bowler 300 is a big number, means you’ve battled a few injuries and niggles, got through it and played well in different conditions.”Related

Speaking again after the day’s play, Cummins reflected on his journey, which saw him miss six years of Test cricket after a memorable debut against South Africa in 2011.Carefully nursed through the intervening period by the Cricket Australia medical team, he has been almost ever-present since returning in 2017. Cummins missed a couple of Tests against Pakistan in 2018 owing to a back injury, one against West Indies in 2022 with a quad strain, and may have missed the Sri Lanka series earlier this year with an ankle problem if he hadn’t already been on paternity leave.”I’ve had a really good run the last half-a-dozen years or so of not missing too many games,” he said. “For the first few years, I didn’t know where my second Test was coming, so I still feel like I’ve got lots of miles in the legs.2:38

Cummins: Reaching 300 wickets a sign of durability and resilience

“Back in the day, 300 [wickets] felt like you’re close to the end. [Starc], he’s almost [at] 400. So hopefully I don’t feel like I’m going to end any time soon. The medical staff, I really need to thank, the way they looked after me in the early years and continually to get through a Test match, the way they manage the fast bowlers, a lot of that is a nod to them as well.”Cummins, who had removed Wiaan Mulder on the first evening, claimed all five South Africa wickets to fall to bowlers on the second day, the other being the run out of Keshav Maharaj. He broke South Africa’s fightback in the morning session when Temba Bavuma drove to cover. After lunch, he was magnificent in a spell that finished 4.1-1-4-4.There was the lbw to remove Kyle Verreynne after the pair clattered mid-pitch, a leading edge gathered off Marco Jansen, the outside edge off David Bedingham, and finally, Kagiso Rabada brilliant caught at deep square-leg to bring up the 300th.At that moment, he held the fourth-best strike rate for a bowler with 300 Test wickets, behind Rabada, Dale Steyn and Waqar Younis. Overall, it gave him 79 wickets at 23.03 for this WTC cycle.

Their brand new Dele Alli: Spurs gem is "one of England's best talents"

Tottenham Hotspur have always been a club that gives young players a chance.

Today, Thoms Frank has the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall making regular appearances, and so long as things turn around at Rangers, Mikey Moore is likely to feature more prominently next season.

Go back just over a decade, and it was a certain Harry Kane who was given the chance to lead the line under Mauricio Pochettino. Then, just a few years after that, Dele Alli was signed from MK Dons.

At his best, the former England international was a force of nature for Spurs, and while it’s early, it looks like the North Londoners might just have another version of him on the books today.

What made Dele Alli so special

While he has unfortunately faded out of football almost entirely today, it is impossible to overstate just how special a player Dele was at his peak.

For example, in just his first season with the club, the Englishman was able to rack up a brilliant tally of ten goals and ten assists in 46 appearances.

Such a return would be impressive for a seasoned professional, but considering he was just 20 years old and had spent the prior campaign in League One, it was incredible.

Unsurprisingly, he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year, an award he’d win for a second time the following year after producing an out-of-this-world tally of 34 goal involvements in 50 appearances.

While it sounds overly simplistic, it was this sensational ability to produce goals and assists at an unimaginable rate for someone so young that made the Milton Keynes-born gem so special.

He wasn’t necessarily the best passer in the game, and sometimes could be found lacking when it came to the defensive side of things, but he was a force of nature when it came to popping up at the right time to either score or provide the final pass to someone else who’d put the ball in the back of the net.

So, unfortunately, when the goal involvements began to dry up, everything started to go wrong for the potentially world-class talent, and while he may well get back to his best, he is currently without a club.

In more positive news for Tottenham, it looks like they have an academy gem who could potentially become their new Dele in the coming years.

Meet Spurs' new Dele

There are more than a handful of truly exciting prospects in Spurs’ academy setup at the moment, but the one who stands the best chance of emulating Dele at his best is Luca Williams-Barnett.

Despite still being just 17 years old, the youngster has been a real talking point for those in the know for some time now, and when you take a look at his numbers in youth football, it’s easy to understand why.

For example, in just 23 appearances last season, totalling 1857 minutes, the Luton-born wonderkid scored 20 goals and provided 12 assists, which comes out to 1.39 goal involvements every game, or one every 58.03 minutes.

Then this season, even though he’s now primarily playing with the U21s, he has still scored eight goals and provided five assists in nine youth team appearances, totalling 716 minutes, which comes out to an average of 1.44 goal involvements per game, or one every 55.07 minutes.

In other words, the Lilywhites’ young phenom is already a goalscoring machine, but one who is also a reliable provider of assists, which certainly helps to justify analyst Ben Mattinson’s claim that he’s “one of England’s best talents.”

Moreover, the fact that he has already made his first-team debut, combined with his ability to pop up left, right, and centre with goal involvements from a young age, is undoubtedly reminiscent of Dele at his very best.

Ultimately, it’s still incredibly early in Williams-Barnett’s career, but it’s impossible to ignore just how immense a talent he already is, and his similarities to the Spurs’ former game-changer.

Ten Hag sold Man Utd talent for just £10m, now he's outperforming Bruno

Manchester United have endured a dismal time on the pitch as of late, as seen by their unacceptable 15th-place finish in the Premier League back in 2024/25.

The hierarchy’s answer to such a year was to splash yet more cash in the transfer window, with Ruben Amorim handed over £200m to make the additions he desired.

The recent window has now seen the Red Devils hierarchy spend upwards of £800m since the summer of 2022, with the club only having an FA Cup and Carabao Cup to show for it.

After the first six games of the new campaign, the club have once again failed to deliver, currently sitting in a measly 15th place once again – with Amorim’s side losing nine of their last 15 league matches.

Big money additions like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko have all been added to the squad, but the £200m trio have so far only notched two top-flight goals between them.

Big-money additions don’t necessarily equal immediate success, but one of their previous mammoth additions has proven his worth over the last few years.

Why Bruno has been United’s talisman in recent years

Given the failures of United on the pitch last season, it no doubt made it hugely tricky for any player to produce their best performance levels to help get the side out of trouble.

However, it didn’t stop Bruno Fernandes from thriving for the Red Devils, with the midfielder producing one of the best campaigns of his professional career.

The Portuguese international ended 2024/25 with a total of 37 combined goals and assists, by far and away the most of any player in the first-team squad.

However, despite his impressive form last year, the 30-year-old has struggled to match such heights in the opening weeks of the new campaign – only being able to score twice in his first six outings.

He’s usually been Mr Reliable from the penalty spot during his five-year spell at Old Trafford, but he’s already racked up two misses from the spot – with the most recent costing Amorim’s side a point against Brentford.

Bruno, who’s the manager’s captain of choice, is still a phenomenal talent, but it’s clear that he’s lacking huge amounts of confidence at present – along with the rest of the first team squad.

However, the same can’t be said for one former player, who has managed to take his career to the next level after departing the Red Devils a number of years ago.

The former United star who’s outperforming Bruno

Players leaving United and furthering their careers is nothing new to the fanbase, with numerous talents reaching the next level in their development after departing.

Anthony Elanga is arguably the biggest example in recent years, leaving in a £15m transfer to join Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 after emerging through the ranks at Old Trafford.

The Swede managed 82 appearances at the City Ground, scoring 11 and registering 21 assists – before completing a big-money move to join Newcastle United this summer.

He cost a fee in the region of £60m, with the Red Devils selling him for a quarter of the price he generated for Evangelos Marinakis’ side during the off-season.

However, he’s not alone in such an aspect, with Brazilian star Andreas Pereira another talent who has managed to thrive with regular minutes away from the Theatre of Dreams.

He spent nearly a decade as a Red Devil, racking up 75 senior appearances in the process, but many of which were off the substitutes bench – leading to limited first-team action.

As a result, he left in a £10m deal to join Fulham in the summer of 2022, spending three years at Craven Cottage and finally thriving in England’s top-flight.

The 29-year-old racked up 10 goals and 19 assists in his 110 outings for Marco Silva’s men, leading to one analyst labelling the Brazilian international as “sensational”.

However, Pereira has once again been on the move this summer, leaving the Cottagers and joining Brazilian outfit Palmeiras – allowing him to return to his homeland.

He may have only played four games for his new club, but it has not stopped him from having an immediate impact – already scoring twice and registering a further assist.

Such a tally of three goal contributions is higher than that of Fernandes, with the Portuguese international missing the chance to outperform him with his two penalty misses.

Given the issues United have had in the middle of the park over recent months, there’s no reason as to why Pereira wouldn’t have been able to play a key role had he not been sold.

However, his story at the Red Devils will always finish with a what if, given his bargain departure a few years ago – with the Brazilian yet another player who got away from their grasp far too soon.

'It's not a good situation' – Alexi Lalas raises concerns about Ricardo Pepi's World Cup future for USMNT amid another injury setback

Former national team star Alexi Lalas cast doubt on Ricardo Pepi’s chances of making the 2026 World Cup roster after the striker’s knee injury with PSV, noting that USMNT roster spots will only be more competitive – leaving injured players especially at risk of losing out as the tournament gets closer to kicking off.

Getty Images SportInjury timing threatens Pepi's standing

Lalas addressed the implications of Pepi's injury absence ahead of the October friendlies against Ecuador and Australia. The 22-year-old striker had returned from a long-term knee injury, but has been ruled out for the U.S.'s upcoming October friendlies with another injury.

“If you're hurt, you're hurt,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “There's nothing you can do about it, but it does. It's not a good situation. You're not Erling Haaland, right? You're not going to come no matter what, as long as you're okay by the time the World Cup shows up! There is a competition and an ongoing competition. "

Pepi has 13 goals in 33 international caps for the Americans.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRoster competition intensifies

Lalas pointed to the delayed announcement of the October camp roster as evidence of the heightened competition for national team positions – including Pepi's striker position. It was expected that the roster would be released earlier in the week, but instead came out Thursday.

He also pointed to Sergino Dest's recent injury as another example of how setbacks affect position battles.

“I do think that the importance of this window is I think it was reflected in the fact that this was pushed back,” Lalas said. "And so when it comes to Pepe or Dest, yeah, they'll say, well, they're injured here and injured here. But you start gobbling up those windows, and you're not involved. You may be the odd man out either for the roster or for a starting position going forward because you just won't have enough time to really prove your worth, with the competition going on.”

Calendar constraints

The timing of Pepi's return will prove particularly crucial with the November international window approaching. When he's healthy, he's a man largely in form. He's scored two goals in five appearances this season, and in the last campaign, he netted 11 goals in 18 appearances.

Tottenham player ratings vs Villarreal: Spurs get away with it – calamitous own goal settles Champions League return as Thomas Frank's side survive scintillating threat of ex-Arsenal man Nicolas Pepe

Tottenham opened their 2025-26 Champions League campaign with a 1-0 victory at home to Villarreal, though will be a tad grateful they were able to claim three points on opening night. Thomas Frank made his debut as a coach in Europe's top club competition and will be relieved that his side took the three points, but will know there is work to do if they are to progress from the league phase.

It took Tottenham only four minutes to take the lead, though it came through fortuitous circumstances. Lucas Bergvall's low cross into Richarlison was easily cut out by Luiz Junior, but somehow the Villarreal goalkeeper fumbled the ball backwards over the goal line.

Spurs wanted a penalty towards the end of the first half when Richarlison was felled by Pape Gueye, though their appeals were dismissed and a lengthy VAR check proved inconclusive. Gueye got away with another VAR call when the ball ricocheted up onto his arm inside the 18-yard box soon after.

An incredibly dull second half almost sparked into life near its end when Micky van de Ven brought down Georges Mikautadze just outside his own penalty area, with VAR confirming a free-kick but not a red card despite the hefty challenge. Former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe flashed the resulting set piece narrowly wide and that was as close as Villarreal came to finding an equaliser, with Spurs holding on to secure a fourth clean sheet from their opening six matches in all competitions this season.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Guglielmo Vicario (5/10):

Flapped at a cross early on and skewed a pass into the feet of an opposition attacker in the second half, but didn't have a lot else to do.

    Pedro Porro (6/10):

A lot more assured defensively than he has been already this season. Couldn't get forward too often due to Villarreal's pressing.

    Cristian Romero (6/10):

The only defender who at least tried to make the odd line-breaking pass, even if they were usually cut out pretty swiftly.

    Micky van de Ven (6/10):

Made a couple of fine recovery challenges with his trademark pace and power, though another referee may have sent him off for his challenge on Mikautadze late on.

    Djed Spence (4/10):

England's newest international endured a frustrating evening at both ends. Found it tough marking ex-Arsenal winger Pepe, while his reluctance to play the ball down the line made Spurs easy to defend against on the left flank. Hooked for Udogie.

    Midfield

    Rodrigo Bentancur (6/10):

Kept play ticking neatly in the centre of the park, while he also swept up diligently.

    Lucas Bergvall (7/10):

It was his cross that led to Junior's strange own goal, though the young Swede could hardly take any credit for breaking the deadlock. Dragged the team up the pitch at times, as Frank has made a point of. Afforded a standing ovation when brought off for Danso.

    Pape Matar Sarr (6/10):

Found pockets of space between midfield and attack on occasion, but not enough to actually harm Villarreal. Substituted for Palhinha.

    Attack

    Mohammed Kudus (5/10):

Probably his poorest game since joining Spurs this summer, holding onto the ball for too long and misplacing simple passes.

    Richarlison (5/10):

The Brazilian's inability to hold the ball up made playing through the middle a chore for Spurs. Taken off for debutant Kolo Muani.

    Xavi Simons (6/10):

If anyone looked like producing a piece of magic, it was the mercurial Simons. However, he could only show brief glimpses of his trickery before being subbed for Johnson.

    Subs & Manager

    Destiny Udogie (5/10):

Came on for Spence as he ramps up his return to full fitness. A little overeager in the challenge.

    Joao Palhinha (6/10):

On in place of Sarr and brought some needed steel to the midfield battle.

    Randal Kolo Muani (5/10):

Replaced Richarlison. Hardly involved on his first appearance for Spurs.

    Brennan Johnson (5/10):

On for Simons, though like Kolo Muani couldn't get on the ball too much.

    Kevin Danso (N/A):

On in stoppage time for Bergvall to see out the win.

    Thomas Frank (6/10):

Tottenham were poor for much of the evening, though not poor enough to actually cede a chance of note.

26-year-old star holds talks to join Chelsea alongside Simons and Garnacho

Chelsea are actively pursuing a double deal for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho right now, but they could still sign more players alongside the duo.

Both Simons and Garnacho are determined to sign for Chelsea, but the Blues are still yet to reach full agreements with either of their clubs.

The former has made it clear that he wants to join Enzo Maresca’s side, and is patiently waiting for Chelsea to shake hands on a fee for his services as negotiations continue behind-the-scenes this week.

Garnacho, meanwhile, has earmarked Stamford Bridge as his “only” desired landing spot this summer (David Ornstein) – coming after the Argentine dropped a teasing hint on Instagram.

The 21-year-old liked a post linking him with a move to Chelsea, which is perhaps a clear indication that Garnacho has set his sights on joining the west Londoners.

To make room for the attacking pair, Chelsea are expected to green-light a few more high-profile sales amid pressure from UEFA to produce a positive transfer balance by next month.

Carney Chukwuemeka, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson and Alfie Gilchrist are all being linked with the Cobham exit door before this summer’s transfer deadline on September 1, and this host of departures could also free up space for PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italy number one announced that he will be leaving PSG this summer in an emotional goodbye post on Tuesday evening, coming after he was left out of Luis Enrique’s squad for their UEFA Super Cup clash against Tottenham.

“To the special Paris fans, From the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain,” said Donnarumma.

“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened. I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done.

“If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it. I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home.”

With the 26-year-old now officially leaving the Parc des Princes, PSG’s loss could well be Chelsea’s gain.

Gianluigi Donnarumma holds talks to join Chelsea

Reports from France earlier this week suggested that Chelsea have inquired about Donnarumma, and now journalist Graeme Bailey has told TBR Football that the ex-AC Milan shot-stopper has held talks to join Maresca via his representatives.

Maresca is arguably in need of an experienced figurehead, and all Premier League title-winning sides possess one thing in common – a world-class goalkeeper. Donnarumma fits the bill in all these aspects.

Amid reports he’ll cost around £26 million, Chelsea could seal a major bargain after deciding not to sign Milan’s Mike Maignan earlier in the window.

'I thought it would take longer!' – Estevao Willian opens up on 'incredible adaptation' at Chelsea with Brazilian sensation revelling in 'happiest moment of my life'

Estevao, who is known as ‘Messinho’ in his homeland, has been thrown in at the Premier League deep end. That challenge has been embraced, becoming the youngest player to register a top-flight assist for Chelsea. He has also opened his senior goal account for Brazil – with the target being found in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Chile at the Maracana.

WHAT ESTEVAO SAID

Estevao told of a whirlwind few weeks: “It's happening very quickly, and I'm already getting a lot of opportunities there, more than I even expected at Chelsea.

“But I think it's the result of the hard work and dedication I've maintained in training. [Enzo] Maresca has a lot of confidence in me to play, even arriving in a new league, in a new country. I try to repay that on the field by giving my all. And this adaptation has been incredible.

“I thought it would take a little longer to adapt, because of the climate and the language. But, thank God, it's happening very quickly. I'm already getting used to the language well.

“The climate there has helped a lot during the three weeks I've been there, because it's not cold, it's hot. It's getting dark by nine o'clock at night. So, I think that was crucial for me too, for my adaptation. It's been really, really, really good, I'm loving it.”

Pressed further on whether he expected Chelsea fans to come up with a song for him so quickly, Estevao added: “No! I only heard ‘Estevao’ – the little song. But the affection I see the fans have for me – and the coaching staff, everyone at Chelsea – is incredible. Since I arrived, I've felt at home.

I think I'm developing now at Chelsea; I'm getting the opportunity and taking advantage of it. It's been incredible. I'm loving Chelsea, I'm loving London. I don't think it could be better. Wow, I think it is the happiest moment of my life.”

Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool "could" offer swap deal to sign £40m+ England star

More ambitious than ever before under FSG in the transfer market, Liverpool may now offer a play-plus-cash deal to sign yet another key target for Arne Slot.

Jurgen Klopp delivers "insane" Wirtz verdict

Slot has been given the keys to the kingdom so far this summer with his Premier League medal acting as his right of passage. Jeremie Frimpong became the first to arrive to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold before the Reds then took things to an entirely new level by signing Florian Wirtz. Since then, Milos Kerkez has also arrived alongside third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

It’s the type of spending spree that Jurgen Klopp only saw once during his time at Anfield when Liverpool signed Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho in the space of six months before winning both the Champions League and Premier League.

The German, having seen the impact of top signings at the club in the past – albeit not without the sacrifice of Philippe Coutinho – recently had his say on Wirtz’s big-money arrival.

Klopp told reporters: “There’s no question about it, it’s an insane sum. One that a player at Liverpool is aware of if things don’t go well for two or three games.

“We all agree that we’re talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I’m out if we pay 100 million euros for a player. But the world is changing. That’s just the way the market is.

Bayer Leverkusen's FlorianWirtz

“He’s an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he’ll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen.”

Even after spending that “insane sum”, however, those at Anfield may not be done with their spending. Reports are now suggesting that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes could even decide to offer a swap deal to land one particular target.

Liverpool "could" offer swap deal to sign Guehi

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool “could” offer a player-plus-cash deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace this summer. The England international has found himself on the Reds’ radar following reports that Jarell Quansah is set to join Bayer Leverkusen and amid concerns that Ibrahima Konate could leave following the end of his current deal next summer.

With fresh talks set to take place this week, Guehi remains one to watch as Liverpool aim to solve a potential centre-back problem in bargain fashion.

With just one year remaining on his current contract, Crystal Palace are reportedly demanding just £45m to sell their star defender this summer. Liverpool, however, are still looking for that valuation to drop before making their move to sign Guehi as Edwards and Hughes continue their ruthless streak.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi

Described as “great” by England teammate John Stones at the Euros last summer, Guehi’s first move back to a top English club since leaving Chelsea has been a long time coming, but now he could be on his way to the home of the Premier League champions.
