Birmingham are leaving Lukas Jutkiewicz with too much to do in isolated role

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

The Championship season is just three games old and Birmingham have experienced every result possible – a win, a draw and a loss in that very order, which sees them sit 15th in the table.

Their latest result, a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest suggests that four points from their opening two matches was somewhat a false front as they were exposed against an impressive Nottingham Forest side.

Birmingham were caught napping when Joe Lolley slotted home a low drive from a quickly-taken free-kick before headers from Lewis Grabban and Michael Dawson secured a 3-0 victory.

Scoring goals seems to be the problem for Pep Clotet’s men having lost two key men in the summer.

Che Adams joined Southampton in a £15m deal after netting 22 goals at St Andrew’s whilst Jota joined arch-rivals Aston Villa having laid on 11 assists.

The Blues have scored just two solitary goals in their three Championship matches.

On the Chalkboard

The problem may lie in how they set up with just one striker in attack.

As Lukas Jutkiewicz showed in the 3-0 drubbing by Forest, he’s given far too much to do without any real support.

His heatmap and touchmap, courtesy of WhoScored, show the areas of the pitch he occupied during spells of the game.

You don’t really want your striker coming deep or drifting out wide to try and get the ball – and even at 39 touches, it was the lowest of any other Birmingham player who started the game which suggests no one was able to sufficiently provide or support him.

The 30-year-old also recorded a poor passing success rate of just 38.1% whilst only two of his four shots hit the target. He meanwhile lost possession four times too.

Had another player been in the vicinity of him then maybe the striker would have had a much better game.

If Clotet is going to have any success with the West Midlands club going forward, he may need to find a system which would allow Jutkiewicz some sort of support up top.

Whether that be throwing attacking midfielder Dan Crowley further forward or playing their only other senior striker option Alvaro Gimenez alongside him.

Everton need to give Moise Kean a chance amid Calvert-Lewin’s failings

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Everton have struggled for goals this season, scoring just once in three games so far, and if they persist with Dominic Calvert-Lewin that problem will likely continue.

On the chalkboard

It is good to see Marco Silva handing more opportunities to younger players, but Calvert-Lewin has featured regularly for the Toffees without making much of an impact.

The striker has made more than 30 league appearances for Everton in each of the previous two seasons but has produced a combined total of just 10 goals. In his three league matches so far this season he has had just two shots on target and had three touches in the opposition penalty area, according to Wyscout.

Calvert-Lewin lacks roaring pace and that prevents Everton from being able to get in behind the opposition’s defence, making them more static and easier to contain.

He has completed only three successful dribbles this season – all of which came in the same match against Aston Villa – and his lack of goal threat and general presence on the pitch should be a cause of concern for Silva.

The Portuguese will already be considering alternatives in tactics and perhaps personnel given Everton’s one goal in three games, and therefore Calvert-Lewin could and probably should be the player to make way – particularly as they have £25m man Moise Kean waiting on the bench.

Which option should Silva take?

Dropping Calvert-Lewin risks harming his confidence, but maintaining him in the team could prove far more costly as his lack of goals could lead to more disappointing results, which would threaten any ambitions of European qualification.

It is clear Everton need a shake-up, someone to reinvigorate the side and get them playing to a higher pace. Kean has all the attributes to be that player for Everton and the sooner he adjusts to English football, the better for The Toffees.

The Italian has already displayed a combination of pace and a direct style that makes him a handful for opposition defences.

He would be able to stretch backlines and offer a target for the likes of Bernard and Gylfi Sigurdsson to play through balls to, and that change of emphasis in attack should make Everton less predictable.

In turn, it should provide some much-needed goals too.

Liverpool’s Ki-Jana Hoever showered with praise on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool’s pre-season has been largely underwhelming if truth be told.

After a total of six games played, the European champions have tallied two wins, a draw and three losses as they prepare for another charge at Manchester City’s Premier League crown.

The latest setback came against Napoli, as Carlo Ancelotti’s team swept the Reds aside on Sunday, winning 3-0.

But still, there were some positives and they mostly arrived in the shape of youth prospects stretching their legs and impressing Jurgen Klopp along the way. The boss was still pretty satisfied generally speaking, despite the result.

And one of those young talents who will be hoping his pre-season form can earn him some proper game time during the campaign is Ki-Jana Hoever, the 17-year-old defender.

He quickly took to Instagram to share a snap after the game.

And judging by the comments below the post, Hoever is thought of very highly by his friends and teammates, and even one Anfield icon.

Ian Rush was quick to leave a heart emoji in the comment section as the youngster was swarmed by uplifting messages and praise.

Ajax Amsterdam’s Kenneth Taylor even called him “class”, emphasising his excellent play and potential, despite the loss to the Italian side.

Hoever has just one appearance to his name for the first-team, but if the comments on his Instagram are anything to go by, that number will be rising sooner rather than later.

O’Dowda signing could be the difference for Leeds on opening day

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United have been linked with Callum O’Dowda quite often this summer, and a recent report has stated that he has his heart set on a move to Elland Road in the upcoming transfer window.

This article from Football League World has coincided with the Championship fixture list being released. The opening day of the season sees the Whites travel to Bristol City, a game where O’Dowda could be the difference-maker.

O’Dowda’s history

After being frozen out of the squad according to The Times (subscription required) and rejecting three contract offers it is fair to say that the 24-year-old isn’t leaving Ashton Gate on the best of terms.

If he does join Leeds there would be no better way to get one over his former employers than beating them on his debut.

This extra incentive to win could see the Irishman have an extra spring in his step which could, of course, help his new side on their way to victory.

No need for spying

As we saw last season with spygate, Marcelo Bielsa loves to know everything about his upcoming opponents, and if O’Dowda was signed he could play the role of a spy ahead of this game.

The Irishman will know all of Lee Johnson’s tactics and tricks as he has played under the Bristol City boss for the past three years, and the information that he could relay to Bielsa and his coaching staff could prove invaluable.

This would allow the Argentine the slight advantage he used to get from watching other teams training sessions without breaking the new EFL rule that has been put in place to stop a repeat of the infamous incident between Leeds and Derby.

Transfer Focus: Man United loan move for Gareth Bale is risk free and can deliver big attacking punch

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are pursuing a loan deal for Real Madrid star Gareth Bale this summer, according to The Mirror.

What’s the story?

The paper reckon that with Zinedine Zidane keen on axing him, but buying clubs refusing to meet Madrid’s asking price, United want to launch a bold move that would see the player arrive at Old Trafford for an initial 12 months.

It’s said United would then hold the option of keeping him another year, allowing the Spanish club to get him off the wage bill and move on to other priorities.

It would be something of a coup if the Red Devils could pull such a deal off, considering the Welsh international is valued at as much as £75m, according to the report.

The Flying Pig unleashes fury on De Gea, Young, Sanchez and Pogba in the funniest player ratings ever in the video below…

Where would he fit in?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a right flank problem heading into next season and Bale undoubtedly solves that if he can stay fit and start the majority of United’s games.

His credentials are probably as strong as they come on the open transfer market this summer having scored 102 goals and assisted 64 times in 231 appearances for Madrid.

He may not be gelling with Zidane, but his talent can’t be questioned, especially when he also has a tracked record of lighting up the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.

At 29 years of age, investing in an expensive permanent move for the player doesn’t make too much sense, but the structure of the reported loan deal is ridiculously attractive, making the switch relatively risk-free for both Bale and United.

He’s a high profile player who has the firepower to revitalise a flagging attack that relied on under-performing players last season. If Madrid are keen, it’s all something of a no-brainer for the Red Devils.

The Chalkboard: Jack Ross should’ve played Will Grigg alongside Charlie Wyke

[ad_pod ]

It was a very, very tough game to watch if you hold Sunderland Football Club close to your heart.

Apart from the jubilation of a 5th-minute mix-up between Naby Sarr and Dillon Phillips that handed the Black Cats an early lead, almost the entirety of the remaining minutes were the footballing equivalent of watching paint dry.

Jack Ross’ side simply couldn’t string any decent attacks together, relying on the physical presence of Charlie Wyke up top to conjure something up in the final third.

One thing that Ross probably didn’t expect to see was Krystian Bielik in the form of his life.

Sunderland fans have suffered a lot of heartache over the years but one fan manages to pick his ultimate low in the video below…

The on-loan Arsenal centre-back was handed the Man of the Match award by Sky, and absolutely dominated Wyke and then Will Grigg after the Northern Irishman entered the fray.

Bielik won four aerial duels, made three interceptions and also made three clearances against the Black Cats; he was a man possessed.

What could Ross have done about the Pole’s heroics, you ask?

Well, it was all too easy for Bielik up against just Wyke as a lone striker. All the defender had to do was get a toe in first or head the ball away and Wyke was left helpless, with no one around to snap up the second ball.

Ross should’ve either played Grigg alongside Wyke from the off to give Bielik and co more to think about, or he should have at least seen how the game was turning out and brought the former Wigan man on earlier to partner the No.9, maybe even at half-time.

Grigg’s presence up top, specifically his expert movement in and around the box, would’ve caused all sorts of problems for the Charlton backline as they would have had more to think about than just winning aerial duels.

Instead, it was like taking candy from a baby for Bielik up against Wyke, who was trying way too hard to simply win a header at Wembley, let alone find the back of the net; anyone with a brain could’ve seen he needed some support up there.

Liverpool: Opting out of Matthijs de Ligt move could come to haunt Jurgen Klopp

It was always going to be a hard deal to pull off, but after weeks of speculation, it is looking likely that Matthijs de Ligt won’t be heading to Liverpool this summer.

The Ajax captain has been one of the most talked about players in world football in recent months. With the 19-year-old defender expected to leave his boyhood club this summer, de Ligt’s future has been at the centre of much speculation, with Liverpool one of the front-runners for the teenagers signature, but now, it appears Jurgen Klopp’s side will be missing out.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have opted to drop out of the race for de Ligt, with the report stating that this is due to the club focusing their attention on other areas of the team, namely a versatile attacker.

Although it makes sense for Jurgen Klopp to shift attention from a starting centre-back to an attacker to provide cover for the front three, it is a decision that could come to haunt the club and manager in the future.

Liverpool have been defensively fantastic this season, in large part, to the impact of Virgil van Dijk and emergence and development of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, bit if de Ligt was to be added to the mix, the Reds’ defence would be unbreakable for years to come.

De Ligt and van Dijk have bee good internationally and could have been perfect together at Liverpool, but with Klopp seemingly looking elsewhere for improvements, only time will tell if the club got this decision right.

Liverpool fans, would signing de Ligt take the Reds to the Premier League title? Let us know!

Please stay! Sunderland fans heap praise on Bryan Oviedo

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland suffered extraordinary heartbreak at Wembley on Sunday, but some fans are already looking ahead with optimism to next season, and they’re starting with Bryan Oviedo.

The Black Cats were beaten 2-1 by Charlton on Sunday, marking their second devastating loss in the capital this season.

After taking the lead thanks to a remarkable mix-up by the Addicks, Jack Ross’ side sat on their advantage and simply did not do enough to see out the game.

Ben Purrington levelled things up before half-time, and Patrick Bauer gave Lee Bowyer’s side a deserved winner in the 94th minute of the match.

While none of the Sunderland players covered themselves in glory, there’s no question this group of players is united with the fans, and Oviedo’s post-match tweet has been met with heavy praise from the Wearside faithful.
