Maartens, Field script emphatic South African win

South Africa have begun their title defence in the best fashion possible, thrashing England by ten wickets in the World Cup opener at the CPT-India Pistons Ground, Chennai on Tuesday

Staff Reporter04-Dec-2002South Africa have begun their title defence in the best fashion possible, thrashing England by ten wickets in the World Cup opener at the CPT-India Pistons Ground, Chennai on Tuesday. The architects of the emphatic South African win were openers Adrian Maartens (104*) and captain Rory Field (99*). Dominating the England attack right from ball one, the duo made a mockery of a victory target of 239 off 39 overs.Maartens smashed nine fours in his 77-ball knock while Field stroked eight boundaries in his 67-ball 99 as their team cantered to 240/0 in 22.5 overs. Field missing a well-deserved ton was, then, the only blot on an otherwise perfect afternoon for the defending champions.Such an easy win, though, seemed a remote possibility when England got off to a belligerent start. With Nathan Foy (62 off 44 balls) in rollicking form, the Englishmen rattled up 128-4 by the time Foy was dismissed in the 16th over. But then the wickets began to tumble as Ernst Contradie (2-46) and Johan Schroeder (2-43) led the South African fightback. This ensured that, though, as many as 88 extras were conceded, England were restricted to 238-8. With the openers in blazing form, the South Africans, then, went on to overhaul the total without breaking any sweat and claimed five points, including a bonus point.

Lamb seeks early conclusion to Fletcher contract negotiations

Chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, Tim Lamb, has spoken in a radio interview about the timescale for contract negotiations with England coach Duncan Fletcher. He hopes to have it all sorted out before the start of the Ashes tour, in the best interests of the national side.”The detail of the discussion must remain confidential – but we are talking to Duncan on the possible extension of his contract,” Lamb said.”Those negotiations are ongoing, and we hope we will have them resolved before touring Australia in mid-October. Duncan has put it on public record that he wants to continue, and we are talking to him on that basis at the moment. He added: “I think English cricket has moved forward since Duncan took over as head coach and Nasser Hussain as captain – and that is why we are talking to him now.”

Celtic: Leeds make Matthew Anderson bid

Leeds United have made a bid for Celtic left-back Matthew Anderson, according to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Lowdown: Leeds’ Hjelde interest

Anderson isn’t the only Hoops youngster the Whites are keen on. They were after Leo Hjelde last season prior to his Ross County loan spell and have been credited with an interest in the Norwegian recently.

Reports from Football Insider earlier this week suggested that Leeds are negotiating a deal for Hjelde, and it seems as if Anderson is also a firm target.

The Latest: Anderson offer

Smyth shared the news on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, revealing “Leeds United have made a bid for a Celtic defender” while sharing his article on the development.

That defender is Anderson, who signed a new professional deal with the Hoops last summer.

No financial details of the bid were shared by Smyth or Celtic’s stance on whether they would be willing to part ways with the youngster this summer.

The Verdict: A possible long-term blow?

Although Anderson is yet to feature for the Hoops at senior level, a move to Yorkshire could prove to be a big blow in the long run.

The 17-year-old was tipped as the next Kieran Tierney last year, and left-back is a position that Celtic are yet to really sort out following Tierney’s move to Arsenal.

Greg Taylor and loanee Diego Laxalt battled it out to be first choice last season, with Boli Bolingoli set for a Parkhead return this summer.

Anderson may have had the chance to play senior football with Celtic Colts in the Lowland League next season, however, it seems as if a move to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds could be a possibility following Smyth’s update.

Liverpool linked to Donyell Malen

Liverpool have been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven striker Donyell Malen as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his first-team squad.

What’s the story?

The Reds could be set to challenge German giants Borussia Dortmund for the 22-year-old’s signature after BVB identified him as a potential replacement for Jadon Sancho.

That’s according to Sport Witness, who cite Sky Sports transfer expert Max Bielefeld, claiming Liverpool are set to hold talks about signing Malen.

New Suarez

After being released by Arsenal without ever making a first-team appearance for the Gunners, Malen has rebuilt his career at Eindhoven.

In his homeland, the pacey striker has flourished, scoring an incredible 55 goals and providing a further 24 assists in 116 appearances for Roger Schmidt’s side.

Big things were expected of the Dutch international during his time in England, with his agent Mino Raiola stating: “I think he can be a revelation,” as Malen continued to impress for the capital clubs Under-18’s side.

Raiola may be a controversial character in the world of football, but his ability to spot a talented player is something that cannot be disputed.

His client is now valued at £27 million (as per Transfermarkt) and is seemingly being courted by some of the continent’s biggest sides.

Liverpool have a decent track record bringing in young, attacking talent from the Eredivisie. Dirk Kuyt established himself as a cult hero on Merseyside, while Luis Suarez fired the Reds to within a whisker of their maiden Premier League title.

After the underwhelming campaigns of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and their deputies, Klopp is thought to be in the market for a new forward this summer.

By getting Malen, director of football Michael Edwards could supply the German manager with the Anfield outfit’s next Suarez, and he must swoop for the youngster before Dortmund pounce.

While the Uruguay international, despite his obvious talent, was ultimately unsuccessful in his quest to return Liverpool to winning ways, Malen could succeed where the South American failed.

Klopp’s charges finished 17 points behind top-flight champions Manchester City last term, in part because the Cityzens scored 15 more league goals than their domestic rivals.

If Malen is snapped up by Liverpool over the coming months, then they’ll be hoping that he, like Suarez did, can replicate his Eredivisie form in England and help the Reds their Premier League crown.

And, in other news…Forget Saul: Liverpool must sign “phenomenal” 17 y/o prodigy, Klopp will love him

Queensland on verge of outright victory and hosting final

Queensland moved within 98 runs of hosting next week’s Pura Cup final following another wicket-filled day’s action at the Gabba – leaving the fate of 10,000 meat pies in the balance.

Wayne Heming14-Mar-2002Queensland moved within 98 runs of hosting next week’s Pura Cup final following another wicket-filled day’s action at the Gabba – leaving the fate of 10,000 meat pies in the balance.Queensland officials have already ordered 10,000 of the pies in anticipation of hosting the five-day final and with the Bulls on the verge of an outright win, they aren’t cancelling the order. At stumps on the second day of a bizarre match, Queensland was 1-66 with first-time captain Martin Love (34) and rookie opener Daniel Payne (16) negotiating 24 crucial overs.Queensland returned to a difficult wicket at 6-64 and was mopped up for 107 with Will Carr claiming a career-best 6-46 and Mathew Inness (4-31) combining tocollect all ten wickets. The Bulls, aware they could miss out on playing in the Pura Cup final without winning outright, did an excellent job in restricting the Bushrangers to 122 in their second innings. But scoring 164 runs on a mind-testing strip which had claimed 30 wickets for 377 runs in less than two days was going to be a hard task.Alarm bells sounded when Queensland lost inexperienced opener Brendan Nash (11) with 17 runs on the board. While Payne battled nerves and the early venom of Carr and Inness, Love calmly took control of the situation and at stumps had steered the Bulls into a position where they could sleep a lot sounder. The wicket has played a part in so many wickets tumbling in two days, but poor shot-making has contributed as well on a deck that has been extremely difficult to master.Take Darren Berry (41), who injured his hand batting, and Jonathon Moss (38) out of the equation and Victoria’s second innings tally was 43.Former Test speedster Michael Kasprowicz exploited the pitch early in Victoria’s second innings and looked very dangerous while an impressive Ashley Noffkestepped in to mop up the tailenders.Kasprowicz’s reward was 3-37 off 16 tight overs while Noffke claimed the last four wickets for his 4-29.Noffke, who removed Berry and Carr for a golden duck with successive deliveries, was denied a shot at a hat-trick with Victoria running out of batsmen. If Queensland go on with job tomorrow they will host their third successive Pura Cup, having won both previously.

Musharraf to discuss Indo-Pak cricket relations in Delhi

Besides, Kashmir, Pakistan’s military ruler Gen

31-May-2001Besides, Kashmir, Pakistan’s military ruler Gen. Parvez Musharraf will take up deteriorating cricket relations between India and Pakistan during his forthcoming visit to New Delhi, Pakistan’s Sports Minister SK Tressler said in Islamabad.”Although the issue of Kashmir will top the agenda, the Chief Executive will also talk about the cricket relations between the two countries,” Tressler told local media last night. The immediate issue, according to Tressler, would be the much talked about India-Pakistan Test match to be held in Pakistan in September this year as part of the Asian Championship.Last week, the Indian Cricket Board agreed to play the Test in Pakistan after a gap of 12 years. The commitment to play the match was given in writing by BCCI chief AC Muthiah at an ACC meeting in Lahore.Muthiah’s commitment was explained to be part of the Indian Government’s policy not to restrain its team from playing against Pakistan except in bilateral series and at non-regular venues.Doubts have arisen now about the match to be played in Karachi fromSeptember 13 to 17 after Sports Minister Uma Bharti publicly pulled upthe BCCI for agreeing to play in Pakistan without taking the consent of the Government.Musharraaf, an ardent lover of cricket and who time and again expressed his wish to see normalisation of cricket relations between the two countries, was expected to take up the issue with the Indian leaders during his forthcoming talks in New Delhi. The military ruler has said a number of times in the past that cricketbetween the two countries provided great entertainment to people on both sides of the border and offered the contests as the best way out for normalisation of relations between the two nations.Earlier this year, cricketing relations between the two countries appeared heading for a complete breakdown, when reports of Indian Government’s decision not to play Pakistan in Sharjah last April evoked strong reactions from Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Lt. Gen. Tauqir Zia. The Army official threatened to severe all cricket links with India in retaliation. But Zia, a serving Corps Commander and a close confidant of Musharraf, appeared mellowed down after the military ruler reportedly asked him to tone down his anti-India rhetoric.Though India later said it would not play against Pakistan in any bilateral matches, the PCB expressed its happiness over India’s decision to play in multi-lateral tournaments against Pakistan.Referring to the Indian Government’s sharp reaction to BCCI’s announcement, Tressler said Bharati’s statement further complicated the issues between the two countries. He said there appeared to be no co-ordination between BCCI and the Indian Government making it difficult for others to accept or reject their proposals.Tressler said Muthiah, who took part in the ACC meeting had shown a letter from the Indian Sports Ministry, confirming India’s willingness to participate in all tournaments in which besides Pakistan and India at least one more team takes part.”What’s happening in India? First, the BCCI officials show a letter from their government confirming their team’s participation in the Asian Test Championship and then, they start saying something else,” he said.”On one hand, the Government has given permission to its Board to play against Pakistan and, on the other, it is rebuking the BCCI over confirmation of India’s participation in ATC,” Tressler said.
