Everton missed out on Eden Hazard signing

Everton have seen many players coming the Merseyside club over the past few years, some for very significant amounts of money in terms of transfer fees.

However, looking back along, there has one player on whom the Toffees should have been much quicker to splash the cash, only to miss their opportunity.

According to former Toffees manager David Moyes (via Daily Express), the club were chasing the Belgian while he was at Lille before making his way to England with Chelsea, but a lack of sufficient funds meant that a potential move to Goodison Park wouldn’t have been possible.

Moyes said: “We knew all about Hazard because of Marouane Fellaini and the Belgium boys. But it was always going to be biggish cash for us – and we’ve had a few like that, I can tell you!”

During his time at Lille, the winger scored 50 goals and provided 53 assists in 194 appearances before joining the west Londoners in 2012 in a deal worth a reported £32m.

In 352 appearances with Chelsea across all competitions, the 31-year-old scored 110 goals, provided 92 assists and won numerous titles and individual awards along the way. This shows just how brilliant a piece of business it was from the west London club to bring him to England.

Having left the Premier League in the summer of 2019 for a move to Real Madrid, the Belgian has found goalscoring rather hard, only scoring six times in 65 appearances while also struggling with numerous injuries.

Labelled an “unbelievable” player in his prime by former Chelsea team-mate Ruben Loftus-Cheek and called a “superstar” by Jamie Carragher, Hazard has totalled 166 goals and 155 assists in 611 senior club appearances throughout his career.

Taking all this into account, mostly the goal contributions the Belgian delivered during his time in England, it’s safe to say that it was a real calamity from Bill Kenwright to somehow not find the funds for Everton to swoop in and sign Hazard before Chelsea set their sights on him.

Had the Toffees been able to bring the attacker to Goodison Park when they had him on their radar, he could have been a crucial figure for the club for many years due to his immense talent.

Pakistan still in need of UDRS training

Pakistan’s struggles with the Umpire Decision Review System continued on the second day at Trent Bridge, as they once again found themselves uncertain of how to use the technology to their advantage

Andrew Miller at Trent Bridge30-Jul-2010Pakistan’s struggles with the Umpire Decision Review System continued on the second day at Trent Bridge, as they once again found themselves uncertain of how to use the technology to their advantage. After a wasteful first day, in which they had squandered both of their lifelines in the space of five minutes, their experience reached a new low when Azhar Ali declined to refer a caught-behind decision that, had he done so, would surely have enabled him to carry on with his innings. The incident occurred in the 21st over, with Pakistan already close to meltdown on 41 for 3. James Anderson zipped a full-length outswinger through to the keeper, and belatedly joined the appeal as Matt Prior went up to claim the catch. Azhar’s first instinct was to walk towards the non-striker, Umar Akmal, but seconds later he turned on his heel and walked to the dressing-room.Subsequent replays, however, showed clearly that the ball had flicked Azhar’s pocket on the way through to Prior, and there was no evidence on HotSpot that there had been any bat involved. Had the third umpire Marais Erasmus been presented with that evidence, in full view of the crowd via the replay screen, it is unlikely he would have upheld the onfield decision. However, Pakistan’s captain, Salman Butt, refused to blame his batsman for walking, and instead cast doubts about the reliability of the technology by stating that Azhar actually believed he had got an imperceptible edge on the ball.”I think it was very honest of Azhar Ali, good sportsmanship,” he said. “He edged it and he walked straight away. If we had taken the chance, who knows, it might have been not out because it didn’t show anything and it also showed it clipped the trousers on the way. But he knew he was out, so there’s no point taking the referral. If you are found out on the big screen, it doesn’t look nice.”Butt recalled a similar incident during Pakistan’s tour of Australia in January, when Michael Clarke survived a caught-behind appeal during his century at Hobart, when Snickometer picked up a noise as the ball flicked the sticker on the side of the bat, but the Hotspot replay proved inconclusive.”Hawkeye is not 100 percent and neither is Hotspot,” said Butt. “When the ball hits the sticker on the side [of the bat] it doesn’t leave a mark. It happened with one or two decisions before. But the point is, if the batsman knows he has hit the ball there’s no point taking a chance, because if it’s up there on the big screen it’s pretty embarrassing.”Either way, when coupled with the bloopers on the first day, most notably Kamran Akmal’s crass decision to refer a catch that missed the bat by some distance, it’s clear that Pakistan need some training in how to use the system to their advantage. England themselves had similar problems during the early stages of their tour of the Caribbean last March, but in recent months have become far more savvy.”It’s something to get used to,” said Anderson. “We’ve not used it very well in the past and been on the wrong end of some tough decisions from it, but we’ve used it pretty well so far in this game. As it’s used more and more in this game, the more we’ll get used to it, and the better we’ll use it.”It’s a case of knowing who to consult, because you’ve only got a short period of time to think before you refer,” he added. “We try to keep as many people out of it as possible, and go for the three key people.”

Rangers submit bid for Andreas Skov Olsen

Glasgow Rangers have made an offer to bring Andreas Skov Olsen to Ibrox in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Ibrox News), who claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have submitted a €6m (£5m) offer for the Bologna right winger.

Previous reports had suggested that Gers were considering a bid for the Denmark international this month, and it would now appear that Ross Wilson has pulled the trigger on a move for the 22-year-old.

Rangers’ next Prso

Following his £5.4m move to Bologna in 2019, Skov Olsen has not enjoyed the most successful spell of his career, but the forward nevertheless proved during his time at Nordsjaelland that he could make an excellent addition to Van Bronckhorst’s current options out wide.

Indeed, over his £5.85m-rated wizard scored an astonishing 22 goals and registered five assists, directly contributing to a goal every 114 minutes of league football he played that season.

Furthermore, the £28k-per-week winger also bagged one goal over two outings in the Sydbank Pokalen, as well as netting three goals and providing one assist across six Europa League qualifying matches, taking his total to 26 goals and six assists over 44 outings during that campaign.

As such, should Skov Olsen go on to rediscover such form following a potential switch to Rangers this month, Van Bronckhorst could well have the club’s next Dado Prso on his hands. The legendary Croatian centre-forward – who also operated on the right wing – boasts a similar seasonal-best record to that of the 22-year-old, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists over 42 appearances in all competitions for Rangers back in 2004/05.

Indeed, should the Gers be able to get a “groundbreaking” deal for the Danish talent over the line this month, it would undoubtedly provide their chances of going on to win the Premiership title this season with a considerable boost, an outcome which would delight everyone involved with the club.

Eight injured in blasts outside Chinnaswamy stadium

Low-intensity blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore delayed the start of the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians

Cricinfo staff17-Apr-2010Two low-intensity blasts outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, in which at least eight people sustained injuries, delayed the start of Saturday’s match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, while another bomb was found and defused at a separate location outside the arena. The incidents cast a shadow over the tournament, whose semi-finals are to be held in Bangalore next week, and concern over security arrangements for those games. The explosions took place outside gate No. 12 of the stadium about 30 minutes before the toss was scheduled to take place. The match was due to start at 4.00 pm but the toss was pushed back until 4.45 pm and the start of the game to 5.00pm. There were around 40,000 spectators inside the venue at the time of the blasts and security measures were tightened.Initial reports indicated it was a generator blow-up, but police later clarified that was not the case. City Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari said the blasts were low-intensity and resulted in minor injuries to security staff. “The explosive material was hidden in a plastic bag and placed near the wall adjacent to Gate No 12 of the stadium,” he said. The second bomb was found and defused outside gate no 8, while the IPL match was on.The blasts did not create any panic inside the stadium; though there were no PA messages and the screens flashed a message saying only that the toss had been delayed, news of the blast was coming in from other sources yet fans kept their cool.As an immediate response, police stepped up security measures at Eden Gardens, the venue of the day’s second game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. No incidents were reported from that game. However, the Bangalore incidents will raise questions at a wider level given that the ODI World Cup will be staged in India – and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka – in less than a year from now.

Ntini relishes prospect of 100th cap

At Centurion on Wednesday, an African icon will reach a very special milestone. When, back in March 1998, Makhaya Ntini became the first black South African to represent his country, few could have predicted that he would still be going strong more than a decade later. And yet, he now stands on the cusp of 100 Test caps, an achievement matched by only six out-and-out fast bowlers.”It’s something you can only dream about,” Ntini told Cricinfo during South Africa’s training camp in Potchefstroom. “You look at most fast bowlers and they never pass 100 caps. For me, being a fast bowler, it’s something that you start thinking about once you reach 70-odd games. Every player wants to achieve it.”For me, playing 100 times for my country – from a time when you thought, as a black cricketer, it wouldn’t be possible to penetrate and be successful among a white-dominated sport, it gives a lot of inspiration to younger people. If I can do it, so can they.”These days, Ntini is among the most prominent role-models in his country. Only last week, he was in Cape Town, taking part in the draw for the 2010 Football World Cup. But a decade ago, when he launched his career, he himself had role-models to look up to – and in most cases, to play alongside.”Allan Donald, Shaun Pollock, Lance Klusener, Brian McMillan. Those were the main players, then I became the fifth one,” said Ntini. “I took all the advice and practised it. When one retired, my chances came along, and I knew injuries would come along. That kept me going. And to have a captain like Hansie Cronje, the person who told me I was on a learning curve. He said: ‘Stay fit, stay focused and the chance will come’.”Ntini was just 20 years old when he took the field at Newlands for his first Test against Sri Lanka, and to this day, the moment he was presented with his cap remains his proudest moment. “When you are stood out there on the field before play, the captain pulls out the cap and says: ‘Here’s your first one. Hopefully the first of many.'”In terms of onfield action, however, few memories can contend with his stunning performance at Lord’s in 2003, when he became the first South African to claim ten wickets on the most famous ground in the world, in a performance that propelled his country to a memorable innings victory.”Lord’s, obviously, was special because it was a long wait,” said Ntini. “Four years previously I spoke to Corrie van Zyl [the assistant coach] and said if I get my chance I want to leave my name on the board. Then, when I played in 2003, he reminded me of that and told me it was my chance. After the first five-wicket haul he tapped me on the shoulder and said: ‘There are only nine players who have done a ten-for.’Ntini was made to wait for his tenth of the match, as Andrew Flintoff clubbed a memorable but futile century, but eventually, with two wickets remaining Steve Harmison holed out to Andrew Hall, and Ntini had made his notch in history. “When the moment arrived I couldn’t even feel myself because everywhere I looked the crowd were standing and clapping,” he said. “I had to kiss the ground of Lord’s. It was moment I had been waiting for.”
