Newcastle injury news on Willock

An injury expert has now revealed when he expects Joe Willock to return to playing for Newcastle United again.

The Lowdown: Carrying a knock

As quoted by The Shields Gazette, Steve Bruce revealed that Willock had suffered a ‘knock to his hip’ after being forced off early in their 2-1 loss away at Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The former Arsenal ace was sent for a scan during the international break to see what damage had been done.

The Latest: Back for Tottenham?

Speaking to Football Insider, Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis, has now revealed that the extent of Willock’s injury should not be too serious, and even claimed that he could be ready to play in the North East club’s next game, against Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park in the top flight on Sunday 17th October:

“Fingers crossed, this will not be very serious.

“It was just the impact on the point of that hip. It can be very, very painful with the bruising around there.

“That can restrict mobility and movement, which we saw when he was unable to continue against Wolves.

“But I’m pretty confident those scans will come back as nothing too serious.

“In the next few days, he will loosen up. Hopefully, we will see him back on the training pitches and ready in time for game week eight.”

The Verdict: Relief

It will certainly be a relief to hear that Willock seemingly has a good chance of coming back to play against Spurs.

Given his Arsenal background, he would be right up for the match, and his 1.3 dribbles per game in the Premier League so far this season is only bettered by Allan Saint-Maximin out of his teammates, showing how vital he is in getting the Tyneside outfit up the pitch.

Nonetheless, Bruce will no doubt be hoping and praying that his scan does not come back too serious.

West Ham gifted McKennie boost

According to Italian news outlet Tuttosport, as translated by TRANSFERmarketWEB, West Ham United and new head of recruitment Rob Newman have been gifted a boost in the race to sign Weston McKennie.

The Lowdown: Newman era begins…

As officially announced, the Hammers have now begun a new era at the London Stadium with former Manchester City chief Newman taking on the club’s fresh head of recruitment position.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the 57-year-old will oversee West Ham’s scouting and transfer strategy in a bid to elevate David Moyes’ men to the next level.

Recently, reports have come out indicating that Newman has already set his sights on his first West Ham target.

As per Football Insider, the Irons have already started laying the groundwork to sign USA international McKennie with talks being held.

It is also believed that the 23-year-old is ‘very keen’ on a move to London and the Premier League.

The Latest: Newman gifted McKennie boost…

As per the latest from Italy, it appears Newman and West Ham have been given a boost in the race to sign McKennie for Moyes.

Tuttosport, shared by TRANSFERmarketWEB, say that Juventus are now ready to sanction his sale and could do it as soon as the January transfer window.

The Old Lady apparently want to lodge a bid for 21-year-old Monaco sensation Aurelien Tchouameni and the sale of McKennie may well help them to do that.

The Verdict: Get it done…

As Juve’s stance becomes crystal clear, now may be the perfect time for West Ham to strike a pre-January agreement amid their alleged behind-scenes talks.

Lauded as an ‘outstanding’ player by former Premier League boss David Wagner, it is clear to see that McKennie’s ceiling is vast given he has already racked up 25 caps for the USA at such a young age.

He could add real steel to the Hammers midfield and come as an alternative option to Tomas Soucek, offering an immediate replacement to the outgoing Mark Noble.

Collins, Best rattle Leewards

Cricinfo takes a look at the action from the second day of the third round of matches in the 2008-09 Regional Four Day Competition

Pedro Collins was on song for Barbados, picking up 5 for 31 against Leeward Islands © AFP
On the same surface that Barbados managed a huge 507 at more than five runs an over, Leeward Islands found the going tough in Philipsburg with Pedro Collins on song. Collins picked up a five-for as Leewards were bowled out for 204. Barbados chose to enforce the follow-on and in the 18 overs before close, the Leewards batsmen put up a much better show to end the day on 66 for 1. It was the movement, accuracy and guile of both seamers, Collins and Tino Best (3 for 19), that undermined a brittle batting line-up that offered virtually nothing outside the third-wicket partnership of 165 between Runako Morton (82) and Tonito Willett (70), after both openers departed for ducks. Had it not been for Morton and Willett, it would have been a complete embarrassment for Leewards, with the remaining nine batsmen managing only 39 runs. Austin Richards once again disappointed, falling for 14 in the second essay, but Kieran Powell and captain Runako Morton took them through safely to stumps.Bravo’s patient 105 put Trinidad & Tobago on course for first-innings points against Windward Islands in Trinidad. Resuming on 189 for 4, Bravo continued strongly from his unbeaten 42 overnight and brought up his century, facing 221 balls during his 310-minute stay. Debutant Atiba Allert then put T&T in full control, picking up 4 for 44 as Windwards were left struggling at 140 for 9 at the end of play, still needing 21 runs to avoid the follow-on. Bravo held the innings together after Denesh Ramdin fell off the fourth ball of the day, with Dave Mohammed keeping him company till he reached his hundred. The pair put on 52 for the eighth wicket to take T&T to 310. Sherwin Ganga provided the breakthrough with his first ball, getting Devon Smith caught by Daren Ganga for 17 with the score on 33, and followed it up with the wicket of Andre Fletcher. From then on it was Allert who got the crowd going. He was on a hat-trick after removing Liam Sebastien and Kevin James for ducks, but Sammy was able to fend him off. Allert added two more wickets in quick succession, accounting for Miles Bascombe and Sammy, but the visitors recovered through a 52-run stand between skipper Rawl Lewis and Lyndon James, which lasted till the score was 113.Rain and a soaked outfield slowed Jamaica down on the second day after the left-arm spinner Nikita Miller had handed the advantage back to the defending champions and current table-toppers against the Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) in Barbados. His career-best of 8 for 41 was crucial in giving Jamiaca the first-innings lead after they were shot out for a disappointing 161 the previous day. However, the story was similar to the first day for CCC, who were precariously placed on 59 for 5. None of the batsmen managed to put up a fight and only three ended up with double figures. Miller made short work of the lower order, adding four more wickets to his overnight 4 for 14 and CCC folded for 106. Xavier Marshall was bowled by Kevin McLean during Jamaica’s second innings but Brenton Parchment and Donovan Pagon saw them through to 32 for 1, stretching the lead to 87.

West Ham eyeing Rangers’ Connor Goldson

An update has emerged regarding English Premier League interest in Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, West Ham are lining up a January swoop for the Gers centre-back.

The report claims the Hammers are one of the clubs eyeing the former Brighton man, who is out of contract at Ibrox at the end of the season. Rangers are said to have rejected offers for him over the summer and are looking to extend his deal in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer.

Fans would love it

Rangers chief Ross Wilson must now work his magic to ensure that a nightmare situation does not arise in the January transfer window. Fans will not want the club to be in a position where they could be forced to accept a lowball offer for Goldson due to the threat of losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

If the Gers are unable to agree a new contract with the defender, he could then leave on a free transfer next summer and Premier League clubs such as West Ham could simply wait to snap him up. Alternatively, they could submit a cut-price offer in January to convince Rangers to cash in on him at the last possible opportunity.

This is why Wilson must work hard to persuade the 28-year-old to extend his contract at Ibrox rather than leaving to chase a Premier League dream. There is no guarantee that Goldson will return to England and be a regular starter at West Ham and he will be 29 in December, which means he may not have the time to wait and fight for his place in the Irons’ starting XI.

Therefore, the Rangers chief could make this point to him and suggest that staying in Scotland could be the best decision for his career. He gets to compete for trophies and play in Europe for Steven Gerrard’s side, as he lined up at centre-back against Ligue 1 side Lyon on Thursday night.

Fans would love it if the defender put pen to paper on a new deal as he is a crucial member of the squad. Earlier this year, Goldson was hailed as a “mountain” in the defence for Rangers by Gerrard, who told The Scotsman: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a warrior.

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen on the pitch but also his leadership on the inside of the club and his availability every single day.”

He also averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.39 as he helped Rangers to keep an astonishing 26 clean sheets in 38 appearances last season in the Premiership. This shows how strong he has been at the back for the Gers and why fans would be over the moon if he signs a new contract, as it would secure his future at the club in the wake of West Ham’s reported interest.

Callum McGregor could replace Cabaye at Palace

Crystal Palace could finally replace instrumental midfielder Yohan Cabaye this summer, three years after he departed the club.

What’s the story?

According to French outlet Homme du Match, the Eagles are preparing a £7m offer for the Scotland international Callum McGregor as new manager Patrick Vieira looks to add some class to his engine room options.

The Celtic captain has cultivated an enviable reputation for himself after winning 14 major trophies in his homeland, and he could be the perfect complement to Palace’s current options in the middle of the pitch.

Patrick Vieira would love him

After arriving at Selhurst Park in July 2015, Cabaye quickly became the heartbeat of a successful Palace side, dictating the tempo of their play with his quick thinking and precise passes, attributes which McGregor also possesses.

At the peak of his powers in south London during his first season with the capital club, the Frenchman averaged an impressive two shots per league game, 1.5 key passes and 0.4 dribbles, recording a passing accuracy of 82.6%, as per WhoScored.

McGregor’s comparative figures for last term outline the obvious similarities between the pair, with the 28-year-old managing 1.6 shots per game, 1.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles.

While the likes of James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate have done an admirable job in the Palace midfielder since Cabaye’s departure, the trio are more industrious and pragmatic than their elegant predecessor.

Applying a touch of finesse to proceedings is something McGregor has been doing in Glasgow for a number of years now, and his impressive displays have earned many plaudits down the years, including former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

“He controls the tempo of the game,” said Rodgers. “He is a boy that takes the ball, so clever in his movements, and we ask him to go into certain area of the pitch to offer support. He has a dream of a touch that allows him to go forward.

“His feet are nice and soft, he doesn’t play backwards so much, and he has a great range of passes, and he has the personality now to play those passes, not just one that is secure to keep the ball, he can break a line with a pass and open up and split up the game for us.

“He has been absolutely exceptional in that role, but I say that everywhere he plays.”

Therefore, Vieira would surely love to sign McGregor this summer, taking another significant step in his mission to overhaul the decaying squad Roy Hodgson left behind.

Rangers dealt Gary Cahill blow

Rangers’ hopes of signing veteran centre-back Gary Cahill this summer look to have taken a blow after Steven Gerrard’s side crashed out of the Champions League at Ibrox, with the financial implications of the aggregate defeat against Malmo meaning that a move for the former Chelsea man is now unlikely.

What’s the word?

The Sun linked Rangers with a move for the 35-year-old defender earlier in the summer and he is now a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace following his contract expiry.

However, after Rangers’ missed out on a potential £40m of Champions League income, it has been suggested that a move for Cahill is no longer viable, with the same newspaper claiming that they won’t be able to offer Cahill the wages he wants.

The Telegraph have also claimed that Southampton and Bournemouth are keen on the former England international and it seems as if they would be able to offer him a better deal than the one on offer at Ibrox, so it seems unlikely that he will be linking up with Gerrard this summer.

A blow for Rangers?

After an unbeaten league season that saw Rangers concede just 13 goals in the Scottish top-flight, few Gers fans could have argued that defensive signings were a necessity this summer.

However, recent defeats against Malmo and Dundee United have exposed some of Rangers’ old defensive vulnerabilities, and adding an experienced head such as Cahill could have been a great signing both on and off the pitch for the Teddy Bears.

The centre-back has an vast amount of experience in the Premier League and Champions League, whilst he could have been a leader for the Gers in the dressing room, and perhaps taken on a similar role to Jermain Defoe from a coaching perspective.

Cahill was singled out for high praise by Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace last season, with the experienced manager saying:

“His position is very good, he’s exceptionally good in the air, he’s a strong challenger for the ball and a very good blocker of the ball. These are the defensive qualities we don’t talk about every day… They’re the qualities that get you the clean sheets.

“He’s also brought us leadership qualities, he’s been very good leadership-wise. He’s the best type of leader; he’s the quiet leader people don’t see from Row Z in the stand. He’s the leader we see in training week to week.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

Therefore, he could’ve been an excellent addition to Gerrard’s squad, and the manager will no doubt be even more gutted that his side failed to qualify for the Champions League qualifiers, now that it is seemingly preventing him from improving his squad at Ibrox.
