Craig Hope issues latest update on Newcastle takeover

As each day passes by, Newcastle United fans get more and more eager – or maybe desperate – to wake up to the news that the club has been officially taken over, but alas that moment is yet to come.Amanda Staveley is leading the Saudi-backed consortium, which also has the Reuben brothers involved, but the decision appears to be with the Premier League, who must sanction any deal. And Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has provided a new update into matters, claiming that the top-flight big wigs are set to revamp their owners and directors test in light of the Magpies takeover – but this isn’t likely to stop the move from happening. He suggests that matters could go into next week, so supporters will have to wait even longer to see Mike Ashley’s tenure come to an abrupt end. He said:

News of a takeover has been rumbling on for over a month now in the northeast, and the process has no doubt been hindered by current government restrictions of a nationwide lockdown – thus, the parties haven’t been able to meet in person to thrash out everything necessary.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

Hope’s update provides encouraging light over a deal actually being complete, just a little more patience may be required given the circumstances.

Rangers fans react to Peter Lovenkrands’ cup final Instagram post

Loads of Rangers fans have reacted to something Peter Lovenkrands posted on Instagram, as the former Ibrox hero was clearly enjoying the broadcast of his iconic cup final performance this weekend.

With no proper football to entertain us at the moment, clubs and broadcasters alike have had to resort to showing old matches to keep fans entertained, and the 2002 Scottish Cup final was shown on BBC this weekend.

Best of the Decade: Top scorers & creators – Can you name them?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The Gers triumphed 3-2 over Celtic courtesy of a brace from Lovenkrands, with the Dane’s winning strike coming with virtually the final touch of the game, heading home from a Neil McCann cross just seconds before the 90-minute mark.

The 40 year-old, who is now coach for the reserves side at Ibrox, was watching the match along with fans on Instagram, live streaming his reaction to the winning goal.

Unsurprisingly, supporters were absolutely loving it, as they took to Twitter to share their joy, and you can find some of the best responses down below…

Ex-Spurs boss Sherwood makes silly claim about Kane

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood has tipped Harry Kane to leave the club if they fail to win a trophy next season, per beIN Sports.

What’s he said?

Kane has yet to pick up a winners’ medal during his time at Spurs.

He has, of course, won two Golden Boots and has also helped the club reach the Champions League final and mount two Premier League title challenges.

But Sherwood, who managed the club during the 2013/14 season, insists that the England international will need tangible proof of his success if he is to stay in north London.

He said: “[Kane] needs to win something. So I think he’ll give it a period of time, certainly next season.

“The end of this season and next season and see if they can get closer to winning something. And if they don’t, then he will leave.”

[ad_pod ]

Just too simplistic

This is a very easy thing for Sherwood to say.

It isn’t so much analysis as lazy punditry; not every one-club man throughout history has won major trophies on a continual basis.

Francesco Totti, one of the greatest Italian players of his generation, only ever won Serie A once during his spell at Roma; Matt Le Tissier, one of the most gifted playmakers in English football, never won a single medal during his time at Southampton.

What they traded for trophies was genuine immortality at their respective clubs. Both are revered as icons at Roma and Southampton.

Even Xavi Hernandez, the Barcelona great, cites Le Tissier as a major hero of his.

Sometimes it isn’t just about the baubles that can be placed in a cabinet.

Kane, though, is a world-class striker – he has 177 goals to his name in 270 appearances – and he could be the vital ingredient needed to take Spurs over the line.

But even if he doesn’t, he could become a legend in north London if he simply stays for the duration.

Meanwhile, one Spurs ace has been criticised for his performance against Olympiacos.

Man Utd legend Paul Scholes delivers glowing verdict on Mason Greenwood

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on BT Sport, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes delivered a ringing endorsement of Mason Greenwood’s potential after his goal-scoring display against Partizan Belgrade.

What did he say?

The 18-year-old impressed in the Europa League clash on Thursday night, capping off a fine performance with a well-taken goal in the Red Devils’ eventual 3-0 victory.

And, after seeing his display, Scholes waxed lyrical over the teenager, comparing him to former United marksman Robin van Persie, and also suggesting he would become a better goal-scorer than teammate Marcus Rashford.

He said (as quoted by The Evening Standard): “I think they (Greenwood and Van Persie) both have that stylish way about them with that left foot. It’s almost like a bit of Velcro at times. They’re both great finishers, everything seems so smooth. We talk about United not having number nines, but he could be a number nine because of that sheer composure that he has in front of goal.

“He just calms himself down, takes a touch. We saw Marcus in the first half, where he should have taken a touch and he didn’t, we saw Mason take that touch and it made the big difference. I think Mason will be a better goalscorer than Marcus.”

Sky is the limit

After impressing on the club’s pre-season tour in the summer – he scored against both Inter and Leeds – much would have been expected of Greenwood coming into the season. And though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t exactly gifted him with plenty of opportunities (he has played just 112 minutes of Premier League football), when it has come, he has invariably taken it with both hands.

The academy product scored in both games he started against FC Astana and Rochdale respectively earlier in the season, and once again showed on Thursday night that he has a certain calmness to his game. It is that ability to stay ice-cold and finish under pressure that understandably led to Scholes suggesting he has a big advantage over Rashford. And whilst the latter has transitioned to the left-hand side, Greenwood could go from playing on the right-wing as he did against Partizan, to a more central role in the future.

Arsenal fans call for Unai Emery to leave following disappointing defeat

Arsenal fans want Unai Emery to leave the club following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday evening.

The Gunners had the chance to move third with a victory over the Blades at Bramall Lane.

But Lys Mousset’s first-half goal proved decisive as Chris Wilder’s men picked up an impressive three points.

The Gunners have won four of their opening nine games in the Premier League, beating Newcastle United, Burnley, Aston Villa and Bournemouth, drawing with Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and Manchester United, and losing to Liverpool and the Blades.

The result leaves the club in fifth, 10 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s league leaders, and fans are already growing tired of Emery’s tactics. It must be mentioned, too, that Mesut Ozil has made just one appearance this season, while midfielder Granit Xhaka was surprisingly named club captain earlier this campaign.

Indeed, he guided the club to a fifth-placed finish last term as they missed out on qualification for the Champions League, and it remains to be seen if they can go one better this time around.

Man City’s Benjamin Mendy targets Raheem Sterling on Twitter after Tuesday’s heroics

Raheem Sterling might’ve claimed three goals on Tuesday night, but Benjamin Mendy wasn’t entirely satisfied.Manchester City’s social media enthusiast has spent the majority of his career in England on Twitter or recovering from various injuries, which have seen him miss a combined 87 goals since he joined from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco for £52m in 2017.Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, with two appearances in City’s previous two games, the first coming against Crystal Palace in the Premier League, the Frenchman will boost Pep Guardiola’s title hopes as he tries desperately to patch his injury-stricken defence.

And what an addition he will be – especially if he holds Sterling to the standards that he appeared to last night. Imagine his future performances…

Sterling bagged a hat-trick and an assist in Tuesday night’s match against Atalanta, earning the man of the match award in the process. It doesn’t get much better than that – unless you score four, of course.

Don Hutchison believes Everton have better forward players than West Ham United

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

BBC Sport pundit Don Hutchison has praised Everton’s front-four claiming they can be just as good as West Ham United’s on top form.

What did he say?

The former West Ham and Everton man was speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday, via Hammers News, and believes that players such as Bernard and Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison can be just as threatening as West Ham’s equivalent options behind the centre-forward.

Hutchison admitted the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko and Felipe Anderson are in better form and as a result are playing with much more confidence the Everton lot.

However, the former Scotland international said: “You could look at West Ham’s four then you could look at Everton’s four and go if they start playing well, and get a tune out of them, then there’s not a great deal of difference.

“I totally understand West Ham’s front four are playing a lot better with more confidence, but still with Sigurdsson and Bernard, you look at Richarlison you’re looking at players that cost a lot of money but are not playing well.”

Living in the past

In past seasons, Everton’s current bunch have certainly proved themselves in the Premier League, perhaps even more so than West Ham’s. Sigurdsson has netted 59 goals in 255 Premier League appearances in the top-flight, whilst Richarlison scored 13 league goals last season for the Toffees as they finished eighth.

As for Theo Walcott, although he has yet to wow Goodison Park, previous seasons at Arsenal have shown his capabilities in providing for the side. The Englishman bagged 14 league goals back in 2012-13, with his best return most recently coming in 2016-17 where he netted 10 times in the top-flight.

Bernard has given the fans glimpses of his attacking prowess since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk, involving himself in five goals during his Premier League career thus far, whilst being just one of four different scorers for the Toffees this season in the league.

Things have been different for the Hammers, however. Haller and Yarmolenko together already have a total of seven league goals this season, which is one more than Everton’s entire league total of six. Brazilian star Anderson also beats every Toffees man on the creative front, providing three assists for West Ham this Premier League campaign, compared to Sigurdsson’s one.
