Paulo Vinícius Coelho (UOL)
“Botafogo.

Será no detalhe”

Vitor Guedes (Lance!)
“O Botafogo é o atual campeão brasileiro e sul-americano e, apesar de ter avançado em segundo, fez uma fase de grupo superior ao Palmeiras. Por outro lado, o Alviverde está mais acostumado a decidir nos últimos anos. Para não ficar no muro, o ligeiro favoritismo alvinegro se deve ao fato de o Palmeiras ter um péssimo retrospecto na decisão por pênaltis”

Leeds set to give Illan Meslier a chance if Kiko Casilla is banned

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Kiko Casilla’s deadline for appealing his charge of racial abuse against Jonathan Leko was on Wednesday evening, and as of yet, we’re still not sure what will happen to the Spaniard.

If he’s found guilty he’ll be banned for a minimum of six games, and Marcelo Bielsa will have a big decision to make between the sticks, but a recent Q&A session with Phil Hay indicates that the Argentine has already made his choice.

[ad_pod ]

What’s been said then?

The Athletic’s Leeds United correspondent was hosting a Q&A session on Thursday, and one fan asked about what Bielsa’s plan is if Casilla is banned.

“From what I hear, Bielsa is likely to give Meslier a chance. It sounds like he’ll go with him. It kind of fits. Last season, when BPF and Blackman were both injured, he played Huffer rather than taking an emergency signing. Granted that was a one-off game but he tends to work like that.” Hay replied.

No new signing

With Leeds being linked with a move for David Stockdale (The People (17/11 Via Leeds Live) in recent weeks this is a rather surprising update.

It seems as if Bielsa has faith in what he already has at the club rather than feeling that he has to dip into the transfer market to replace Casilla for a short period of time.

Whether this turns out to be the right decision remains to be seen, but the fact that it frees up a bit more space on the wage bill can only be a good thing as United wouldn’t have to splurge on a new goalkeeper that they don’t really need.

Meslier is yet to make his debut for the Yorkshire outfit, so this could be perceived as a bit of a risk, but Bielsa sees the 6 foot 6 stopper in training, so he must know what sort of talent he possesses.

His performances for the U23s certainly suggest he has what it takes, putting in an impressive display against Crystal Palace. He’s also saved two penalties this term.

In other news, Leeds fans have been praising one man who they believe has turned a corner

Man Utd must desperately find an alternative to their counter-attacking style

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over the reins from Jose Mourinho last December, Manchester United appear to have really embraced the counter-attacking life.

As per FourFourTwo, in the Red Devils’ key victories over the likes of Tottenham, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain last season, the Manchester side registered under 40% of the possession. Then, against Chelsea to start off this campaign, the team blew away Frank Lampard’s men with a blistering display of breaking at speed, winning 4-0 whilst only having 46% of the ball.

Under the Norwegian, they have undoubtedly had some marquee wins. But slowly but surely, their emphasis on having just this one approach to beat teams is being found out – and at a major cost too. Having looked like they had turned the corner from their slump this campaign – United had held Liverpool before racking up three successive away wins over the past week or so – they fell to a dismal 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.

It was the kind of performance that has been so typical of their season so far – not creating enough chances, and far too reliant on transition football to even remotely trouble the opposition defence. In total, Solskjaer’s men had just four shots on target – this despite them having an average of 58% possession. What is perhaps just as frustrating for the United manager, is that they only created one big chance. And that too from central midfielder Fred, rather than any of their attacking players.

The Red Devils simply didn’t have the creativity and ingenuity to unlock the Cherries defence, and it was a major surprise to see Solskjaer opt against bringing on the creative Juan Mata. Instead, the Norwegian introduced Jesse Lingard, another man whose raw pace is more suited to counter-attacking rather than picking passes.

If United are to truly achieve success this season, then they desperately need to find a Plan B as soon as possible. Their main game-plan has been worked out, and they’re costing themselves big points in the Premier League because of it.

Sunderland fans react to Tony Davison exit

Sunderland fans are disappointed to see managing director Tony Davison leave after only 18 months in the role at the club, although some have seemingly found some sort of silver lining in the news.

A lot of the supporters have been turning against the club this week, with many annoyed by the appointment of Phil Parkinson, whilst some are becoming increasingly frustrated at the board with this news on Davison. However, some supporters have linked his departure to a potential new investment.

As told by The Chronicle Live, the Black Cats have been searching for new investors for some time. The report says that three investors John Phelan, Glenn Fuhrman and Rob Platek, who work together at investment firm MSD Partners, have been looking at buying the club and have already started negotiations with owner Stewart Donald.

However, prior to the announcement of Parkinson as manager, Sunderland released a statement which read: “The Board has consistently stated its desire to seek additional investment to enable the club to be competitive in whichever league it finds itself in” and that “Discussions have been ongoing for some time, and continue to be so”

Sunderland currently sit ninth in League One and face Wycombe Wanderers today. A win for the club could take them back into the playoffs if other results go their way, and fans will be hoping Parkinson gets off to a flyer.

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott posts on Instagram after England U17 success

[ad_pod ]

England’s youth teams have had unparalleled levels of success over the past few years.

They’ve won the U17 World Cup, U19 Euros and U20 World Cup. It’s fair to say that the future looks bright for the Three Lions.

Now, the U17 team has reached the final of the Syrenka Cup.

If you don’t pay too much attention to youth football and therefore don’t know what the Syrenka Cup is, it’s a yearly tournament that takes place in Poland for national teams at youth level.

England actually won the U17 version last year, and now they’re on the verge of another title after beating Austria 4-2 on Sunday.

The Young Lions’ squad could be filled with stars of the future, but there aren’t many names that fans will be too familiar with at the moment.

However, one player who many football fans should know is Harvey Elliott. The Liverpool man is the youngest player ever to play in the Premier League, and he’s played a part in this team reaching the final of this competition.

The 16-year-old took to Instagram to celebrate the team’s achievement and to look towards the final.

Leeds’ summer signing Rafa Mujica failing to make Ryan Edmondson fear

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

When a man who came through the infamous La Masia academy for two years during his youth career arrived at Elland Road, there would have been a sense of excitement.

Perhaps there would also have been an expectation on Rafa Mujica’s shoulders too.

Reflecting upon things, a striker who scored ten times at senior level for Barcelona B may have just had Ryan Edmondson on his toes.

Leeds have a number of young promising attackers, not least in Edmondson himself but also Liam McCarron and Kun Temenuzkhov.

Competition for places in the U23s is fierce but it was perhaps strange that they brought in Mujica and then almost instantly loaned him out.

The 20-year-old was shipped out to the second division in Spain where so far, he’s played just two games for Extremadura UD.

During his loan spell he’s featured for only 30 minutes. Things haven’t gone according to plan for the Spaniard or his team who sit 21st in the Segunda Division without a win.

After six games they’ve scored just four goals and Mujica has rarely been seen. If he’s struggling to get into a poor side the future doesn’t particularly bode well for him ahead of the rest of the campaign.

Leeds stated when they signed the young striker that he’d go straight into the youth setup at Thorp Arch where he would develop his game.

That decision was eventually thrown out the window as he was sent to Spain to continue his progress. On the face of it, it was a decision that made sense, but it’s strange when you’ve only just signed the player.

At the age of 20, you need to be playing but considering Leeds was his first move abroad, time to settle in England should have been considered – especially if they see a future for him.

However, it does serve as good news for Edmondson.

The teenager has appeared for the Leeds senior team in the past but may have feared for his future when both Mujica and McCarron walked through the door over the summer.

The former has more experience at senior level, playing 78 times as opposed to Edmondson’s two.

But the way things have played out, Edmondson should still feel as though he’s at the top of the pecking order in terms of the academy strikers coming through the ranks.

Mujica is so far struggling to make an impact and with his side doing so badly, confidence is unlikely to be too high.

Manchester United swoop for Jadon Sancho in January could decide top four hopes

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Having lit the Bundesliga alight since his arrival from Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho continues to be linked with a return to the glitz and glam of the Premier League.

The England international has started the current campaign on fire with two goals and two assists in his first three matches, and that has understandably kicked the ‘Sancho to the Premier League’ rumours into overdrive once more.

The Sun claim the 19-year-old is Manchester United’s “top transfer target” in the January transfer window, and the Dortmund ace is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main priority.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The report claims that despite Sancho agreeing bumper new deal with Dortmund, United still hope to bring him to English football mid-way through the campaign in a bid to “avoid the massive revenue plunge” of missing out on Champions League football.

Make no mistake, landing the wing wizard in the winter transfer window would make the Red Devils strong contenders for the top four and the riches that come with it.

Despite Daniel James’ goal-scoring start to his Old Trafford career against Chelsea, his rawness seemed evident in the clash against Wolves at Molineux. The Welshman struggled to impose himself on the game and suffered with a lack of space to run into. Sancho on the other hand, has shown his adeptness at thriving in tight spaces, averaging an impressive 3.3 dribbles per game last season.

More than his explosive pace, the former City star would add a sense of dynamism and fear that is missing from United’s current squad. Looking around at Solskjaer’s side, are there any players opposition defenders would lose sleep over? Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford perhaps, but Sancho’s repertoire of skills and trickery make him a full-back’s nightmare and his versatility to play on both the left and right flanks simply adds to the options the United boss has.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

Taking his incredible end product and putting it into the United side would add the amount of goals the Red Devils would need to charge into the top four. If teams decide to double up on Sancho, then the likes of Rashford and Martial would have even more space to weave their magic.

For all of United’s struggles last season, they weren’t too far off from clinching a shock top four place by the end of the campaign. Adding Sancho in January would be the sprinkle of stardust, and more importantly, goals, that could propel them back into the promised land.

Arsenal icon Ian Wright showers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with praise on Instagram

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal had an incredibly difficult task on the opening day of the new 2019/20 Premier League season as they headed over to St James’ Park to face off against Newcastle in their own backyard.

And at the end of the day, a brilliant finish from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the only thing that separated the two teams after the 90 minutes.

Of course, that goal and the incredible effort from the pacy Gabon forward didn’t go unnoticed.

Ian Wright, one of Arsenal’s icons, spoke about Aubameyang for BBC Radio and he showered the Gunners’ saviour with all sorts of praise when he shared a snippet from it on

/B1HL6hyF3cZ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram.

Among other things, he mentioned how Aubameyang is absolutely lethal and wished him nothing but as many injury-free years as possible.

For professional football players, that just might be the single most important aspect of their careers.

It didn’t take long for Aubameyang to respond to Wright, thanking him for the kind words.

The Gunners will host Burnley at the Emirates for their next campaign challenge that takes place on 17 August.
