Will the fortress provide Rajasthan relief?

ESPNCricinfo previews the game between Rajasthan Royals and Kochi Tuskers Kerala

The Preview by Sidharth Monga23-Apr-2011Match factsSunday, April 24, Jaipur
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big pictureFinally Rajasthan get a two-day break. The schedule of the tournament hasn’t been awfully kind to Shane Warne’s side – they have been playing every alternate day since April 15 until they found this extra day off. Those one-day gaps between games went in travelling from Jaipur in western India, to Kolkata in the east, to Bangalore in the south where their game was rained out, to Mohali in the north. It didn’t help that they get into a habit of losing on this kind of stretch. An injury to their best player of the season, Johan Botha, didn’t help either. Or the strategy of hiding their big names – Shane Watson and Ross Taylor – while facing a huge chase, as part of some inexplicable plan. They last won on April 12, and with just five points from six games, they are now left needing to win at least five of their remaining eight matches. Even that might not be enough.

With the state of affairs thus, Rajasthan will find some relief in coming back home to their once impregnable fortress Jaipur, and also in that one extra day to take stock and rethink strategies. However, the team that they face is on a hot streak. Kochi Tuskers Kerala were welcomed into the IPL fold with two losses, but they have made a comeback with three wins in a row to move up in the table. On the field, Rajasthan won’t be expecting too much by the way of relief.Form guide (most recent first)Rajasthan LLLWW (sixth in points table)

He is not only a shrewd limited-overs bowler, but has also batted better than expected. Rajasthan will also need to sort out their batting order so that Watson and Taylor get to face as many balls as possible.

In their last game, Kochi brought in Muttiah Muralitharan ahead of his countryman Thisara Perera. 4-0-50-1. Shane Warne’s figures from his last game read about as pretty as the effect his new moisturiser has had on his face. Warne doesn’t need to do this. He still does this. It can’t be just the money. The man who won almost every big contest international cricket had to offer, now has a small little fight on his hands, both as bowler and captain.Prime numbersWarne is only the third man to 50 IPL wickets. He has also conceded the most sixes in IPL RP Singh is the highest wicket-taker over-all, with 54 strikes to his name The chatter”It’s all about teamwork. We believe in our abilities. We try and execute game-plans accordingly. Everyone applauds each other’s success. It’s really great to have a group like that. We just had to be clinical in executing.”

Late strikes give Federal Areas edge

A couple of late strikes gave Federal Areas the edge in their match against Punjab at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground as Punjab ended 139 runs behind with five wickets in hand. The match is headed for a draw, but there are still the points for a first-innings lead up for grabs. Federal Areas did not have the best start to the day as they only added 46 runs to their overnight score of 315 for 6. Punjab seamer Mohammad Khalil struck thrice to finish with figures of 5 for 100. Punjab then looked good in their response, reaching 198 for 3 thanks to half-centuries from Imran Farhat, Mohammad Ayub and Usman Salahuddin. But Ayub and Salahuddin were dismissed towards the end of the day, to give Federal Areas the advantage.Baluchistan secured the first-innings lead on the third day despite a spirited fightback by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Half-centuries from Adnan Raees and Khalid Usman helped Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa recover after they started the day at 81 for 4, and almost carried their team past Baluchistan’s first-innings score of 279, but seamer Abdur Rauf took the three quick wickets at the end and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa fell short by 13 runs. Baluchistan then went out and got to 145 for 3 in their second innings, putting them in a strong position – 158 ahead with seven wickets in hand – at stumps.

Lahore Eagles and KRL in summit clash

A round-up of the semi-finals of the One-Day National Cup Division Two tournament in Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jan-2011An unbeaten century from Rana Adnan and a collective bowling performance helped Lahore Eagles secure a place in the final by beating State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) by 73 runs in Karachi. Adnan’s 100 off 115 balls held the innings together and his partnership of 77 with Hamza Paracha, who made 51, set a platform for a considerable total. The middle and lower order, however, failed to contribute and Lahore slumped from 212 for 3 to 265 for 8. Jalat Khan took 3 for 53 for SBP while new-ball bowler, Mohammad Naved, was economical during his seven-over spell of 1 for 21.SBP’s chase never got off the ground. Their openers fell for single-digit scores and, after a 63-run stand for the third wicket, the steady fall of wickets resumed. Adnan Raees top scored with 49 and no one else got over 40. Lahore’s new-ball bowler, Emmad Ali, took 3 for 34 while Saad Nasim and Waqas Aslam took two apiece. SBP were eventually bowled out for 192 in 40 overs.Riding on Azhar Ali’s unbeaten hundred, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) chased the target of 273 to beat Karachi Zebras by six wickets and an over to spare in Hyderabad to secure their berth in the final. The chase had begun poorly, with KRL slipping to 19 for 3, before Ali led the revival along with Bazid Khan, who made 50. Bazid departed with the score on 117 but Ali Khan entered and blitzed 80 off 58 balls to shut Karachi out of the contest.Ali’s century had helped overcome Karachi’s strong total of 272 for 9, which was built around Asif Zakir’s run-a-ball 110. Rameez Aziz payed a supporting hand with 40 but there were no other contributions of note. Mohammad Irfan claimed 3 for 46 for KRL while Nauman Ali and Saeed Anwar jnr took two wickets apiece.

Virender Sehwag, the India opener, has been named the Test Player of the Year during the 2010 ICC Awards ceremony in Bangalore. He won the award, the first of his career, ahead of Sachin Tendulkar, Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla, who were the other nominees in the category.”It’s fantastic to win the award, to take over the title from Gautam Gambhir,” Sehwag said after receiving the prize from Courtney Walsh. “I think I got motivated when Gambhir got this award last time, I was discussing with him that I hope I get it this time and I got it. I’m a huge fan of Test cricket and I love to play it more than Twenty20 or one-day cricket.”When I was growing up, I was playing lot of 10-over, 12-over games, so I had to score off every ball, same thing I have continued. I followed my instincts and played in the same way in T20, ODI and Tests. It’s a great strength to have.”Sehwag scored 1282 runs in ten Tests at an average of 85.46 between August 2009 and 2010, which was the period under consideration for the award. He was also named in the Test Team of the Year, which was captained by MS Dhoni.

A confiança vai sempre existir.

Confira outras respostas do treinador do Flamengo

Atuação diante do Madureira

Tottenham: Reporter drops big Skipp news

Taking to Twitter, reliable reporter Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard has shared a major Tottenham Hotspur development involving midfielder Oliver Skipp.

The Lowdown: Skipp contract talks emerge…

In recent days, there have been emerged reports of Tottenham’s advanced talks to seal a new deal for the exciting 21-year-old.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas claimed earlier this week that the Lilywhites’ negotiations over fresh terms for Skipp were moving forward promisingly.

Indeed, according to the reporter’s information, the midfielder is ‘close to agreeing a new long-term contract’ with discussions ongoing and a ‘confidence on all sides’ that it will get done (Twitter).

Now, sharing a midweek development, Kilpatrick has a major update for Spurs supporters.

The Latest: Kilpatrick shares big Skipp update…

Taking to Twitter in sharing a corresponding article from the Evening Standard, Kilpatrick said that Skipp is now ‘set to sign’ his new deal ‘this week’ in a huge boost for the club.

The Verdict: Great news…

Moving to tie down the young Englishman comes as great news for Spurs and Conte, going by Skipp’s brilliant performances when available.

There are plenty of signs that the 21-year-old may well be a star for the future and a crucial player over the coming seasons, with his first full campaign as a senior first-teamer proving fruitful.

As highlighted by WhoScored, the ex-Norwich loanee has displayed a real composure in Tottenham’s midfield throughout 2021/22, averaging a higher pass accuracy than all of his team-mates with more than one Premier League start (90.1%).

These numbers could point to an assured figure and a real presence in the middle of the park who looks set to only get better.

'The guys were pumped-up to perform' – Dhoni

The Indian captain hailed the victory as ‘satisfying’ but wanted more improvement in the fielding

Siddarth Ravindran in Dambulla24-Jun-2010

MS Dhoni: ” If we gradually improve our fielding till the World Cup, we will be a safe fielding side”•Associated Press

The same two sides had contested the final of the Asia Cup two years ago, and the totals and margin of victory are similar to the title clash at Dambulla on Thursday. The two matches couldn’t be more different though.Sri Lanka’s win had come on the back of two freakish performances – Sanath Jayasuriya’s counterattacking 125 to revive them from 66 for 4, and Ajantha Mendis’ star-making haul of 6 for 13 that derailed a rampant India – while MS Dhoni’s side won through an array of mostly routine but important contributions from nearly everyone in the side.Ashish Nehra may grab the headlines but his quick-bowling partners had done their bit earlier on. Praveen Kumar showed off yet again how dangerous he can be in conditions that suit him, and removed the dangerous Tillakaratne Dilshan in the first over, while Zaheer Khan tormented Upul Tharanga with sideways movement before getting him to shoulder arms to an indipper that took the offstump. As for the batting, Dinesh Karthik was the surprise Man of the Match but five other batsmen made 25 or more to steadily drive India’s total towards the zone labelled ‘competitive’. For a side that has often ridden on individual brilliance and its batting arsenal, a bowler-led team-based victory in a tournament final is especially significant.Dhoni was a pleased man after witnessing his side lift their game every time it mattered in the tournament, with the only defeat coming in the inconsequential league match against Sri Lanka. “This was a very satisfying win for us since we won three out of four games,” Dhoni said. “It was an important tournament, four of the best sides were playing, and each side was quite balanced, overall happy with the performance.”With the final being played on a fresh pitch, getting to bat first proved a big advantage at a venue where the team batting second usually finds it harder to score. “The guys were pumped-up to perform. It was a good toss to win, conditions were ideal for batting,” Dhoni said. “It got a bit slower as the game progressed and it started doing a bit under the lights, the fast bowlers made the most out of it.”There were some aspects of Thursday’s showing that he felt needed improvement, such as the number of batsmen who didn’t go on to score half-centuries after getting their eye in. “Most of us got the starts that was needed, we should have converted those starts,” he said. “But if you win a game nobody questions that but it is very important to learn even if you are winning games, I still think we could have scored more runs and given the bowlers the extra cushion of 15-20 runs.”India’s next limited-overs assignment is the tri-series in Dambulla, also involving New Zealand, following the Tests against Sri Lanka next month. With none of the batting youngsters having made compelling cases in the Asia Cup and the Zimbabwe series, it will be interesting to see what the pecking order is when the squad is chosen for that triangular.Another facet that Dhoni wanted the team to improve in was fielding, which had played a key role in Sri Lanka’s win in Tuesday’s league game. Kumar Sangakkara’s team was flat in the field during the finals, with several dropped chances and plenty of fumbles in the outfield.Kris Srikkanth, the Indian chairman of selectors, had said the players’ fitness and fielding levels had been looked into while picking the squad for the tournament, and the team has also shown a renewed focus on fielding during their practice sessions. “We need to improve our fielding, but one good thing, we had a few youngsters who did really well, so we don’t really have to hide too many in this side,” Dhoni said. “All our fielders are not brilliant but it was good in this series, if we gradually improve our fielding till the World Cup, we will be a safe fielding side, and fielding really contributes in one-dayers.”

Worcestershire fail to build on starts

Three Worcestershire batsmen made half-centuries but none were able to go on to make the most of ideal batting conditions on the first day of their County Championship Division Two tussle against Sussex at Hove

24-May-2010
ScorecardThree Worcestershire batsmen made half-centuries but none were able to go on to make the most of ideal batting conditions on the first day of their County Championship Division Two tussle against Sussex at Hove. When opener Phil Jaques and skipper Vikram Solanki put on 157 in 34 overs for the second wicket it looked like being a long day for a Sussex side still reeling from yesterday’s shock Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat to amateurs ECB Unicorns. But the home side fought back in the second half of the day, which closed with Worcestershire 302 for 6. It was hard work in the heat for the Sussex seam attack, with only West Indian Corey Collymore able to exert a measure of control. His first two spells totalling 16 overs went for just 24 runs and he picked up two wickets. Opener Daryl Mitchell perished to the new ball, edging to Ed Joyce at third slip in Collymore’s fifth over. But Sussex struggled to support Collymore either side of lunch. Yasir Arafat, beginning his third spell as overseas player after replacing fellow Pakistani Rana Naved, looked well short of his best and conceded four boundaries in five balls to Solanki as his partnership with Jacques blossomed either side of lunch.Sussex leaked 65 runs in 13 overs after the break as both batsmen took advantage of a short boundary on the scoreboard side but Collymore made the breakthrough when Jacques played across a straight one for 80. Arafat returned for a third spell and a switch of ends worked when Solanki played on to a ball which was not short enough to pull for 70.Sussex were finally building some pressure but the trend of batsmen getting out when seemingly well set continued. Moeen Ali was leg before to Robin Martin-Jenkins, betrayed by a lack of footwork, and after tea Sussex got two bonus wickets just before taking the new ball.Dutchman Alex Kervezee had played aggressively for 50 from 67 balls with 10 fours but he was caught behind trying to run a delivery from Monty Panesar down to third man to give wicketkeeper Ben Brown his maiden Championship catch.Ben Smith, who had laboured for over an hour for his 17, then edged to third slip during a fiery spell from James Anyon. But Ben Scott and debutant Shaaiq Choudhry negotiated 14 overs of the second new ball to take their side to stumps.
