Slowly but steadily India gain the edge

India gained a crucial 86-run lead on an extremely tactical day’s cricket – one that often resembled a cat-and-mouse game – through a triple-strike in the middle session and four wickets shortly before stumps. Australia scored 166 runs in 85.4 overs, strangled by the pressure built up by defensive field placings and niggardly pace bowling in the morning, and the loss of the last seven wickets for 100 runs undid a strong platform. Mahendra Singh Dhoni changed his tactics after lunch, giving Australia the opportunity to be aggressive, but they failed to overtake India’s 441.It was clear from the first session which team had a lead to defend. India went in with eight fielders on the off side, repeatedly bowled outside the off stump, and delayed the introduction of the spinners. Australia, who had to force the pace, decided not to start the day with innovative strokeplay and as a result only 42 runs came before lunch. On a good batting strip in front of another poor crowd, Simon Katich and Michael Hussey made steady rather than spectacular process. India’s method should have taken care of Katich on 94, but Rahul Dravid put down a simple catch at first slip off Ishant, grasping it easily and then spilling it.However, unlike in Nagpur four years ago, Katich pressed on and got to his century. The first aggressive shot Katich played – just before lunch – undid him, trapping him lbw to a late-swinging yorker from Zaheer. Katich had faced 50 deliveries since reaching a hundred, 31 on his final score of 102. It had been a strategic morning as the game – on the surface – drifted, but it was interesting viewing as both teams waited for the other to blink first.

Smart Stats
  • Australia scored at a run-rate of 2.63 an over, their second-lowest in an innings since 2000 – they scored at the same rate in their second innings in Mohali.
  • Australia hit 13 boundaries in day, an average of 38 balls for each. They had spells of 24.1 and 19.2 overs without one in the day.
  • Australia scored 42 in the first session at a rate of 1.75 an over, losing one wicket, and 49 for the loss of three wickets in the second, at 1.69 per over.
  • The Australian batsmen offered no shot to 83 deliveries off fast bowlers in the 24 overs bowled in the first session, which saw many deliveries pitched wide of the off stump.
  • Michael Hussey scored at a strike-rate of less than 50 against each bowler except Sachin Tendulkar. Against Ishant Sharma, he made eight off 45 balls. Ishant gave away 13 off 49 deliveries he bowled to Simon Katich.
  • Hussey was run-out for the first time in his Test career, in 48 innings.

Slowly, almost unnoticeably, Hussey moved on to 90. He left the ball well and never looked like getting out. There was the odd flourish, most noticeably a brilliant reverse-sweep for four off Harbhajan Singh, collected from well outside leg stump, to go with an inside-out drive off Ishant. Shortly after Michael Clarke was undone by a peach from Ishant for a 44-ball 8, Hussey was run out. It needed something out of the blue to dislodge a man who seemed set to grind India into the dust. Hussey, on 90, punched off the back foot and M Vijay at silly point intercepted the ball and flicked it back to Dhoni, who broke the stumps with Hussey on the move for a single.Eleven deliveries after Hussey departed, Harbhajan cleaned up Shane Watson with one that spun, clipped the forearm and rolled on to off stump. Brad Haddin and Cameron White added 52, but they were never entirely comfortable during their partnership. Haddin was troubled by Amit Mishra and survived a stumping appeal and a couple of shouts to balls that pitched just outside leg stump. Dhoni continued with the old ball and Mishra had his man when Haddin’s nervous padding resulted in ball brushing bat on its way to slip.Dhoni took the new ball and Jason Krejza quickly became Ishant’s 13th victim of the series, trapped in front by a scuttling inswinger. Ishant should have had Mitchell Johnson in the same over, but VVS Laxman dropped a regulation chance at second slip. As the shadows lengthened at 4.30, White drove Ishant sumptuously through the covers for the first boundary in 20 overs and a powerful sweep raised his best score and Australia’s 350. The very next ball, trying to push a sluggish run-rate, White (46) chipped Harbhajan to long-on. If White had played well enough to deserve his fifty, Harbhajan had earned his third wicket with his perseverance on an unhelpful surface. In the next over Johnson’s wild slog settled in long-on’s hands and India had secured an 86-run lead.India’s openers saw out the one remaining over and will harbour hopes of batting Australia out of the Test.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Buendia and Martinez update

Aston Villa duo Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez are planning to travel to Argentina against the club’s wishes for the upcoming international break.

That’s according to broadcaster Christian Martin, cited by @AVFCFaithful_, and, as to be excepted, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts on social media.

Villa confirmed on Monday that both Buendia and Martinez have been called up by Argentina for three World Cup qualifiers next month.

The Premier League then released a statement in regards to clubs not releasing their players to represent their nations in red-list countries.

Argentina is currently on the UK Government’s red-list regarding travel to England, meaning a 10-day period of hotel isolation would be required if Buendia and Martinez turned out for their country.

And it seems as if the pair are willing to defy Villa and play for Argentina against Venezuela, Brazil and Bolivia.

Villa fans react

@AVFCFaithful_ shared the news on the duo on social media on Saturday lunchtime. This is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with one labelling the pair’s decision as ‘disgraceful’.

Sunderland: Potential boost in pursuit of Jordan Gabriel

Sunderland could be handed a real boost in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest defender Jordan Gabriel, according to a recent report from The Sun on Sunday (8th August, page 67).

What’s the story?

Gabriel has been with Nottingham Forest since 2015, and has gone on to make three senior appearances for the club in the early stages of his career.

The full-back spent last year’s campaign on loan with Blackpool and made 35 appearances for the Tangerines as they won promotion from League One, whilst under the watchful eye of Neil Critchley.

He had an average Whoscored rating of 6.60 from that campaign, which shows that he was a steady operator for Blackpool last term.

It appears as though Gabriel’s strong showings haven’t gone unnoticed though, with both Sunderland and Blackpool being keen on agreeing a permanent deal for the Forest youngster.

The Sun have now reported that Chris Hughton’s side could be willing to sell Gabriel this summer, providing they can get a deal to sign Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Palmer over the line before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion.

‘Talented modern-day full-back’

Gabriel is still somewhat of a ‘raw talent’, who hasn’t had a considerable amount of time to prove himself at a high level, such as the Championship.

With Forest’s lack of depth in defence at this moment in time, it certainly has come as a surprise to hear that they’re willing to move Gabriel on this summer, even if they are to sign Palmer from Sheffield Wednesday.

But Forest’s loss could be Sunderland’s gain, and they’ll know that they’ll have a real battle on their hands to convince Gabriel to sign up with the Black Cats over Blackpool.

Not only are the Tangerines playing their football at a higher level than Lee Johnson’s side, but he’s also had an enjoyable loan spell with Blackpool recently.

But Sunderland might feel as though they’re more likely to be able to offer him regular minutes in the first-team football this term, with Lee Johnson’s side looking to win promotion into the second-tier of English football.

Speaking after Blackpool confirmed the signing of Gabriel during the 2020/21 season, Neil Crtichley labelled the full-back as ‘talented’, and the defender certainly repaid that faith shown in him, by playing an important role in the Tangerines’ promotion-winning campaign.

“Jordan is a talented modern day full-back, and is someone I have been aware of from his early years at Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

“He will bring athleticism to the right-hand side of the team, and he is very good defensively in one v one situations. He’s very highly thought of at Nottingham Forest and we’re thankful to them for allowing us to sign Jordan for the season.”

Sunderland have been somewhat of a ‘sleeping giant’ in English football for too long now, with this being the club’s fourth consecutive season in the third-tier of English football.

They need to win promotion this term and get back on the right path back towards the Premier League, with their days of playing in the top-flight likely to feel like a distant memory for the Stadium of Light faithful.

Signing a player of Gabriel’s quality would be a real statement of intent, and Sunderland’s supporters should be buzzing about this recent update on the defender’s future with Nottingham Forest.

Panesar spins South Africa to follow-on

How they were out

An outstanding collective effort from England’s attack dismantled South Africa for 247 on the third day and left them following on at Lord’s. Monty Panesar took the bowling honours with four wickets during a spell which highlighted his importance to the team in this series, after the groundwork was laid by the trio of quicks who took out the top order. Only Ashwell Prince, with a fine century, provided substantial resistance and South Africa headed in again 346 behind.Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie, back out where they started the day, survived four overs against Panesar and Kevin Pietersen. There was some great by-play from Pietersen, who was still riding on the high of a rare Test wicket after he removed Dale Steyn to end the first innings in fading light. Pietersen ended with a huge shout against Smith and there were smiles allround, but Smith’s grins came through gritted teeth after another sobering day.Pace has been the buzzword leading into this series, of both South Africa’s abundance and England’s perceived lack of a cutting edge. However, England have been able to sit back quite contently in the knowledge that they hold the ace in the pack when it comes to spin and Panesar showed why. He teased out wickets with flight and spin, ripping one round McKenzie’s pads and another through the defences of Morne Morkel.Yet England’s quick bowlers laid down a few markers of their own. They have never pretended to possess the 90mph qualities of Steyn and co., but that is more than compensated for by home knowledge and guile. Whereas South Africa were short of variation, England’s trio each brought something different. James Anderson mixed swingers with cutters, Stuart Broad caused problems with his splice-jarring length and Ryan Sidebottom used his angle to remove the key obstacle of Jacques Kallis.Prince raised his game like few of his team-mates have been able to do over the last three days. He was the one member of the top-order with questions begin asked about his place after a highest score of 38 in eight innings. Here he showed all the fighting qualities that have become his trademark, but also expressed himself with some handsome boundaries. The hundred arrived off 173 deliveries and was greeted with a leap from Prince as he savoured the moment. However, the personal satisfaction of the achievement will be clouded the team’s predicament.England were on top of their game from the very start as they reduced South Africa to 47 for 3. Facing a total of almost 600 can make even the flattest pitches appear trickier and England’s attack immediately found more assistance from the surface. It was extra lift from a good length that did for Smith as a ball from Anderson climbed and took the shoulder of the bat. Smith’s expressions have grown less cheery from the moment he stuck England in, and he walked off with 251 fewer to his name than the last time he batted at Lord’s.

Pitching the right line and length
  • Line England % Wkts South Africa % Wkts
    Good 84.1 6 74 7
    Too straight 10.6 2 19.3 1
    Too wide 5.3 2 6.7
  • Length England % Wkts South Africa % Wkts
    Good 81.7 9 57.6 4
    Short 13.2 34.9 2
    Full 3.6 1 5.1 2

    Yorker 0.8 0.7
  • Too straight refers to a line on middle and leg stump.
% of deliveries bowled by the team till stumps on the third day.

England’s attack had strong game plans for the top order. For Hashim Amla there was a clear policy of testing him against the short ball and he was forced onto the back foot Broad then exploited his tentativeness with a full delivery outside off. Sidebottom, after bringing a couple of deliveries back into Kallis, he pushed one wider and Kallis chased it. The edge flew low to the right of Andrew Strauss at first slip, who managed to get his fingers under the ball to ignite huge celebrations from England.McKenzie fought through the early setbacks, but fell in the second over after lunch when he failed to cover the line with his pad. The amount of turn from outside leg even caught Panesar by surprise. Even when the innings went quiet, with Prince and AB de Villiers adding the one substantial partnership of 70, Michael Vaughan kept control by blocking off the runs. Once the early hardness disappeared the quicks had to switch to different skills, and began searching for reverse swing, while Vaughan rotated his options. Anderson produced a tight spell as 16 runs came in a 12-over spell leading up to tea.England’s catching was in full working order, too, and Anderson pulled off a blinder at mid-on, diving full-length to his left, to remove de Villiers. Broad struck with the first ball of a comeback burst, then Panesar returned to the fore as he ripped one through Morkel following a teasing over. South Africa have a genuine tail and Paul Harris’ hack to mid-on – where Anderson pulled off his second fine catch – didn’t do Prince any favours.Prince at last found someone to stay with him as Steyn showed reliance against a predictable short-pitched barrage. Their 14-over partnership forced Vaughan to take the second new ball and, shortly after Prince reached three figures, Sidebottom found the outside edge. If South Africa are going to escape they need to learn Prince’s effort for the two days ahead.

Spurs in pole position to sign Damsgaard

According to a report by Italian newspaper La Repubblica, as relayed by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Tottenham Hotspur and Fabio Paratici have ‘overtaken all’ competitors in the race to sign Sampdoria gem Mikkel Damsgaard.

The Lowdown: Paratici chasing Damsgaard?

Tottenham have been heavily linked with a swoop for the Danish sensation ever since new managing director Fabio Paratici was appointed by the north Londoners.

Talk of an ‘assault’ on Sampdoria to sign Damsgaard emerged as far back as early last month, but president of the Serie A club, Massimo Ferrero, recently explained it would take an offer of around ‘€40/45 million (£34.2m/£38.5m)’ to get them thinking.

The Latest: Tottenham in pole position…

As per La Repubblica (via TMW), Spurs have ‘overtaken all’ competitors in the race to sign Damsgaard this summer in what is a rather promising claim to emerge from Italy.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates/” title=”Tottenham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Despite Ferrero’s admission on what it would take to land the 21-year-old, Spurs’ managing director Paratici is said to be readying a €25m (£21.4m) bid for his services this summer.

Damsgaard was apparently followed ‘in the days of Mourinho’ but has now returned to the ‘top’ of Tottenham’s transfer list since Paratici’s arrival at N17.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Lauded as a ‘magical’ and ‘dynamic’ player by respected TV 2 SPORT football expert and commentator Martin Mikkelsen, the attacking midfielder has marked himself out as one of the most exciting prospects in world football.

He also enjoyed a fantastic Euro 2020 campaign with the Denmark national team, scoring two goals and assisting one for his teammates over five tournament appearances (uefa.com).

His highlight was a stunning free-kick against England to open the scoring at Wembley in the semi-finals.

If he can repeat those heroics at club level, Tottenham would have quite the gem on their hands.

Cahill signing could lead to Katic exit

Rangers have been linked with a move for Gary Cahill recently and if he were to arrive at Ibrox, it could spell the end for Nikola Katic in Steven Gerrard’s side.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, Rangers are interested in signing the veteran centre-back following his exit from Crystal Palace earlier this summer, and are prepared to offer him a significant wage in order to bring him to Ibrox.

Should the 35-year-old arrive, it would leave Gerrard with a plethora of options at centre-back, which suggests that at least one from his current squad would leave, with Katic one of the most likely options.

The Croatia international missed the entirety of last season through injury and whilst he made his return in the pre-season game against Brighton recently, it is difficult to see him reclaiming a regular first-team spot in Gerrard’s side, when you consider the superb performances of Connor Goldson and Filip Helander last season.

Rangers would concede 13 goals in the Scottish Premiership, with their superb defensive record key to them finishing the league season unbeaten, which suggests that Gerrard won’t make too many changes at the back as he prepares for the season opener later this month.

Should Rangers swap Cahill for Katic?

Katic has been linked with a loan move to Italian side Spezia in recent weeks and sending him out on loan could be the ideal way for him to regain fitness and prove to Gerrard that he has a future at Ibrox, as before his injury he was a key player in the 41-year-old manager’s side.

Therefore, bringing in someone of Cahill’s experience could be an excellent short-term option for Gerrard and Rangers, as he will add some Champions League know-how ahead of the Gers’ return to the elite club competition.

The former Chelsea man was a regular for Crystal Palace in the Premier League last season, which suggests that he has what it takes to play consistently in the Scottish Premiership, and former manager Roy Hodgson praised his leadership qualities, saying:

“He’s also brought us leadership qualities, he’s been very good leadership-wise. He’s the best type of leader; he’s the quiet leader people don’t see from Row Z in the stand. He’s the leader we see in training week to week.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

This certainly sounds like the type of player any manager would love to have in his squad, and therefore it would make a lot of sense if Ross Wilson were to sign him on a free transfer this summer and then perhaps send Katic out on loan to regain his fitness and confidence after his terrible injury problems last season.

And, in other news… Wilson can sign Rangers’ next Defoe with swoop for “exciting” wonderkid

Update provided on Gers target Yusuf

Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Glasgow Rangers target Alhassan Yusuf is about to make a move to Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

The Lowdown: Gers target Yusuf

The Gers have been linked with a move for Yusuf (SCORENigeria via The Daily Record), who currently plays in Sweden for IFK Goteborg.

He has made 76 appearances for his current club, racking up two goals and nine assists during that time (Transfermarkt).

However, the Gers have not made a concrete move for him and have already signed another midfielder in John Lundstram (rangers.co.uk), and there has now been an update on Yusuf’s future.

The Latest: Yusuf close to Royal Antwerp

Romano has revealed that the 20-year-old is closing in on a move to Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp (via Voetbal Primeur).

The journalist added that IFK Goteborg will receive €1.5m (£1.3m) from his sale.

The Verdict: Other targets emerged

Steven Gerrard and co will naturally be disappointed to miss out on one of their summer targets. However, it appears that no bid was made his services, so perhaps they weren’t hugely keen on the 20-year-old.

The Gers have recently signed a midfielder in Lundstram on a free transfer. Aged 27 and with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, he is more of a finished product, whereas the much younger Yusuf will no doubt still need to develop.

In other news, Rangers have a funding gap which needs to be filled.
