Phil Hay casts doubt on Bielsa and Radrizzani’s futures at Leeds

[ad_pod ]

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, prominent Leeds United pundit Phil Hay has given his verdict on what the future holds for manager Marcelo Bielsa and owner Andrea Radrizzani at Elland Road.

What he said

In a Q&A section of the aforementioned podcast, Hay was asked by a fan whether he thought Bielsa and Radrizzani would stick with the Whites if they fail to achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.

On the subject of the Argentine coach’s future, Hay said: “I don’t think Bielsa would stay for another year in the Championship. If it [promotion] doesn’t happen I can’t see him being here next season.”

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

As for Italian majority owner Radrizzani, he said: “he consistently says he has a limited shelf life in the Championship and doesn’t want to lose a fortune…He’s always been fairly honest about that and I’ve had the gut feeling that it wouldn’t be a long stint here if Leeds didn’t make it to the Premier League…it’s a fair assumption that he could leave.”

A matter of urgency

Promotion to the top flight is still very much on the agenda for Leeds this season. They are in the thick of the Championship title race, along with Norwich City and Sheffield United. Leeds have also led the division for much of this campaign.

Falling short of promotion this season would be hard to take for fans. However, the loss of Bielsa as a result would arguably constitute an even greater disappointment.

Since his appointment in the summer, the 63-year-old has utterly transformed the Yorkshire club. Having made relatively few signings, he has taken a squad that finished 13th last season and turned them into title contenders who play scintillating football and give chances to promising youth academy prospects.

If Hay’s instincts that Leeds would lose Bielsa and Radrizzani if they missed out on promotion are correct, then the need to secure a return to the top flight this season becomes more urgent than ever.

Spurs fans discuss potential Serge Aurier exit

It’s fair to say Serge Aurier hasn’t exactly proven himself to be one of the more reliable defenders Tottenham have had in the Premier League era.

The Ivory Coast international has conceded his fair share of penalties, and made some reckless challenges too, and it’s difficult to see how he really fits into a Jose Mourinho team.

Now, according to Italian publication Tuttosport (via Milan News), Spurs could be given the chance to cut their losses on the man they signed from French giants PSG back when Mauricio Pochettino was in charge of the club.

The report claims that Serie A side Milan are ready to revive their interest in the full-back, and that they are looking to strike a deal during the upcoming summer transfer window.

After hearing about Aurier’s potential exit, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts.

One fan in particular labelled Aurier a “liability” and insisted that they desperately needed a more “reliable” defender in his place.

If Spurs can recoup some of the reported £23m that they spent on bringing Aurier to north London, then it’s something that they should surely be agreeing to.

Mourinho can then potentially reinvest that money into a new right-back, with reports in recent weeks even claiming that Norwich’s Max Aarons is in their sights.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to their interest in this 15-goal striker.

Arsenal: Jonathan Northcroft raves about Bukayo Saka

Chief Football Writer of the Sunday Times Jonathan Northcroft joined Jacqui Oatley on the Sunday Supplement podcast and discussed Bukayo Saka’s recent emergence to the scene.

The 18-year-old talent has been one of the revelations for Arsenal in 2019/20 and the youngster has already tallied three goals and nine assists throughout his stay with the senior team. Of course, as Northcroft states, he’s someone with immense talent and potential and he’s consistently shown it during his rise from the Gunners’ Academy, scoring 16 for their U18 squad and six for their U23.

Sunday Times’ journalist believes he’s someone very, very special and he said so on the Sunday Supplement podcast (23/02/2020): “I’m so drawn to this kid, he’s been sensational since coming in and he’s only 18. I think probably you [speaking to Darren Lewis] would have heard the same – a lot of stuff coming out of Arsenal’s Academy about this boy going to be very, very special, but as an attacking player. And then he arrives as a full-back. I kind of liken him to Trent Alexander-Arnold. And I’m not saying, at this stage, he’s another Trent yet, but I think he’s got it in him.”

It’s still fairly early days for Saka and the comparisons with Alexander-Arnold, a Champions League winner, will have to wait a bit but even with that being said, the 18-year-old does seem to have an extremely high ceiling. Indeed, the likes of Gary Neville and Gary Lineker have also purred over him as he looks to establish himself in the first-team.

As per WhoScored, he’s already averaging as many attempted through balls per game as club-record signing Nicolas Pepe (0.1) and as many dribbles as Hector Bellerin (1.4) over the same period, so it’s clear the academy graduate is having a real impact under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal fans, do you believe Saka can become your own Alexander-Arnold or are those comparisons a bit premature at this point? Let us know in the comments below!

Man Utd’s Daniel James’ shocking display should force revamp of January plans

Having arrived from Swansea in the summer for a reported £15m, Daniel James has been a revelation for Manchester United in his debut season at Old Trafford. The Wales international has struck the back of the net three times and provided a further seven assists, and against Burnley in late December, delivered the kind of display that showed he has the mettle to be a real Premier League star.

But against Manchester City in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash on Tuesday night, James’ performance left a lot to be desired. It raised a serious concern about how effective the 22-year-old can be in certain games, and whether there is an element of being a one-trick pony about him.

Watch Manchester United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

His speed is there for all to see, with that breakaway goal against Chelsea in United’s opening Premier League game of the season still fresh in the mind. But up against defences that are far more resilient and form a low block, does he have more tricks up his sleeve to really unlock the door? Against City, James tried simply to knock the ball past Benjamin Mendy before chasing after it, and it was a tactic that failed to succeed.

As per Sofascore, he failed to complete the one dribble that he attempted, delivered three inaccurate crosses, and made just six total passes in the 64 minutes that he was on the pitch. It was no surprise therefore that his 6.1 match rating was the lowest of any player on either side.

And perhaps crucially, it should force Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer into reconsidering their transfer plans for this month. Their lack of real significant depth in the right-wing position is alarming, with Mason Greenwood really the only other option – and even he played up front against City. The Red Devils could do with someone who presents a different profile and style of play to James.

Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?

Solskjaer only had to look at the opposition on Tuesday to see City’s right-winger Riyad Mahrez score a goal and cause Brandon Williams problems with his propensity to check inside onto his left foot – the Algerian completed all five of his attempted dribbles. If United can secure a wide-man who perhaps is similarly left-footed and is more adept at getting engaged in the build-up play of the game, rather than as an out-and-out old-school winger like James, they could be a lot more destructive.

Meanwhile, Manchester United making a swoop for this 13-assist ace could help transform them.

Crystal Palace fans stunned by Wan-Bissaka display vs Man City

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Crystal Palace fans have been giving their verdict on Saturday’s momentous win at the Etihad, and they can’t quite believe how good Aaron Wan-Bissaka is.

Eagles’ fans have known for some time that Wan-Bissaka is going to be special, but even the 21 year-old himself might not have predicted such a sensational start to the season.

After some fantastic performances against the league biggest clubs, he put in the best display of his career on Saturday, completely dominating the electric Leroy Sane.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...

Sane, who was in terrifying form leading up to the match with five goals and four assists in his last nine games, was limited to audacious shots from distance and some truly awful crossing, completing just five out of 17 attempted balls into the box.

Wan-Bissaka on the other hand completed one key pass, won one aerial duel, and made a frankly remarkable seven tackles, the most of any player on the pitch.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans suspect they have a future superstar on their hands…

Naby Keita proved vs Chelsea how important he will be in the future for Liverpool

Liverpool signed Naby Keita in the summer of 2017, but it was a long wait before fans of the club were able to see him in a red shirt on Merseyside for the first time.

That was because Jurgen Klopp’s side had agreed a £52m deal that would see the Guinean international remain at his Bundesliga side RB Leipzig until the summer just gone. Now though, the 23-year-old is making up for lost time.

The new number eight at Anfield is the first man to receive the shirt since club legend Steven Gerrard retired, and although nobody is suggesting he could go on to have a career like his predecessor, Keita’s early performances have been promising.

Unlike fellow midfield new boy Fabinho who arrived from Monaco, Kieta’s former side Leipzig employed a similar style of play to the high-tempo gegenpressing that Klopp instils in his players at Liverpool. This has meant his integration into the starting XI has been quicker than the Brazilian’s and Reds fans have had more of an opportunity to see what he’s about.

In the 2-1 Carabao Cup loss to Chelsea, Keita was given 90 minutes by his German boss and although the Blues came back from a goal down to win the game, Liverpool fans should be excited by the central midfielder’s performance.

Keita is an unconventional looking player at times and often seems as though he isn’t in control of the ball, but his dribbling ability and energy is often crucial to getting the Reds up the pitch and onto their now infamous counter attacks. Against Chelsea on Wednesday evening, Keita completed two dribbles and his 91 per cent pass accuracy and two key passes prove that he is beginning to use the ball well too.

After watching him closely it’s easy to tell why the bosses at Anfield were convinced enough to part with what was then a club record fee. Keita’s ability to take the ball on the half-turn and create space for himself is unparalleled in the Liverpool squad and hints at his front-foot approach, which he has the energy to sustain for 90 minutes.

Throughout his career so far, the Guinean has been known for chipping in with a good return of goals from midfield and although he is yet to open his account for the Reds it is clearly not for the lack of trying. In the Carabao Cup tie he had three shots, all of which were on target and forced saves from Chelsea’s stand-in keeper Willy Caballero.

The three tackles that Keita also made in the game point to the defensive side of his game which is just as impressive as his attacking endeavours, as he covers ground in a similar way to James Milner, making the pair a nightmare to play against.

Although he is yet to light-up a game in England, the stats show that Keita is settling well at Liverpool and from the glimpses he has shown, there is much more to come from the 30-cap international.

His selection from the start for the cup tie with Chelsea hints that he could be replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum for the league game between the same two teams on Saturday, even though his energy levels in game make it look like he would have no problem playing two games in a week. There is no doubting though that whether he starts or not on Saturday, Keita is likely to be extremely important in the future for this developing Liverpool side.

18/19 Premier League Home Shirt Power Rankings

At last, every Premier League club has either officially revealed the identity of their new home shirt or a pretty accurate ‘leaked’ image floating about on the internet.

Brighton were the last to get theirs in, just three months after Liverpool were the first to give us a glimpse of what we can expect to seem them wearing when they revealed their home strip before the final game of last season. Remember when all the clubs did that? Those were the days.

So now the Seagulls have woken up and joined the party, it’s time we got down to business and ranked all 20. The results you’ll find here aren’t the work of just me and me alone, it’s the work of the entire Football FanCast team.

Everyone ranked each shirt from one to 20 and then, using a unique scoring system, I tallied all the votes up to conclude the results of our very first Premier League Home Shirt Power Rankings.

You’re probably going to hate us now but that’s ok, no one really likes us anyway…

Tottenham fans won’t be used to seeing themselves ranked bottom in this kind of thing – they’re home shirts are normally pretty smart – they’ve won MirrorFootball’s last two Football Shirt Power Rankings. This year’s is absolutely hideous, though. What is that monstrosity at the bottom?

Any Spurs fan that tells you they like it is lying through their teeth. Daniel Levy didn’t throw £1billion at a brand new stadium for this!

Burnley’s shirts always seem to look exactly the same every season. This time, though, it has been completely ruined by a sponsor nobody’s ever heard of.

Does the poker chip really need to be that big? Fair to say Steven Defour’s poker face isn’t too convincing either – just look at the disgust in his eyes.

So this wasn’t my doing as I think Cardiff’s strip is a pretty smart, although my colleagues clearly don’t agree.

Nevertheless, there’s a distinct lack of creativity going on here and you can see why it hasn’t impressed.

At least it’s no longer red.

It’s basically Tottenham’s car crash of a shirt but in red and black. But wait a minute, they’re made by rival manufacturers. Adidas and Nike have had a mare here. That shouldn’t happen, that just shouldn’t happen.

All of the above Old Trafford stars are clearly in agreement. It’s horrid and well deserving of such a low rank.

I’ve always thought Southampton shirts can only ever be attractive to actual Saints supporters. They’re just… meh!

But this one isn’t too bad, to be honest. The collar’s a bit rogue and Richard Branson could do with toning down his role in the whole thing, but it’s an alright shirt for an alright club.

It’s just really, really boring. Just looking at it makes me want to take a nap.

No disrespect to Brighton but they waited so long to reveal this, only for it to look like that. If I was a Brighton fan I’d be livid.

“You kept us waiting all that time for that,” I would say, before falling asleep. Thankfully, I’m not a Brighton fan.

Strive to be better, Brighton. Strive to be better.

Crystal Palace’s effort isn’t the worst in the world but I’m still waiting for them to mix it up one year. They’re always very similar, with the red and blue stripes and all that.

Nothing much changes, and that’s a problem for me. I think 14th might be a tad harsh, but it’s not exactly the nicest shirt and would’ve looked a little out of place if it were any higher.

I quite like this. It’s simple, smart and minimalistic. The button-up collar is a lovely touch – you can’t beat a button-up collar on a football shirt – and the shirt sponsor isn’t trying to make it all about them, unlike Burnley’s.

But for some reason no one here at FFC towers is that impressed with it, hence the average ranking.

At first glance, this is a beautiful shirt but it very quickly becomes just nice after looking for a while.

I’m a big fan of their new crest and the fact they haven’t tried to be fancy with the stripes this year is a big plus. The collar suits the design too, which adds some extra niceness to the whole thing.

All-in-all it’s a pretty impressive effort from Huddersfield this year – certainly fit for the Premier League.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for their away and alternative shirts. More on those at a later date.

Once again, the collar gives the shirt a lot more class than it perhaps should have. Other than that, there’s not much to love or hate about Man City’s new home kit.

Aside from the design on the sleeves it’s essentially the same kit they wore last year. No creativity here, which isn’t what we’d expect from the Premier League champions. Boo.

I can’t muster up any kind of opinion for Leicester’s shirt this year so I asked our assistant editor, Christy Malyan, what he thought.

He said: “I think it looks too much like a box. You know, like you’re wearing a blue box?”

Sensational. Remember, you can read a lot more of Christy’s cutting edge opinion every day here on FootballFanCast.com.

“It looks awful, like a Wetherspoon’s carpet,” says Jonathan Gorrie, one of our editors.

That’s a little harsh. I think it looks too much like a training top, but it’s certainly not as bad as Jonnie makes it out to be. Ninth is probably about right.

Doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing Eden Hazard knocking about in it this season, either.

Black and red is a pretty strong combination if you’re going to have stripes, and Bournemouth have executed it perfectly with this one.

The gold stripe on the collar is a lovely touch, as are the black sleeves that break up the body of the shirt wonderfully. Fair play to Bournemouth, it’s a solid shirt.

Newcastle always do the whole black and white stripes thing pretty well and this season’s continues that trend.

Opting for a white collar instead of black is an intriguing decision but new signing Ki Sung-yeung clearly thinks it works. Just look at his face!

It’s bold decisions like that that earn you better marks in the power rankings and Mike Ashley’s gamble has paid off well here.

“It’s not a Watford shirt but it’s not a bad shirt.”

That’s the opinion of one of our newest members of the team – Will Jones.

I disagree. I think it’s awful and a disgraceful attempt at trying to look a little bit like Fenerbahce. But the people have spoken and Watford have sneaked in to the top six. Ludicrous.

Now this is a proper, retro-looking football shirt.

What’s not to like about this? The collar is smart, it’s not unnecessarily tight, there’s no horrid looking patterns knocking about and the shade of red really brings out Sadio Mane’s eyes.

A real classic that probably should be ranked higher.

There’s nothing I love about this shirt other than the fact it genuinely finished 4th. Typical Arsenal.

Our social media editor, Olly Huddlestone, approves: “I like it. No idea why they’ve got Alex Iwobi modelling it though. As far as Puma kits go it’s got its own style compared to others that tend to follow a template. I like that.”

Poor Alex.

Fulham have marked their long-awaited return to the Premier League with a wonderful looking number that’s certainly fit for the top-flight.

The black hoop ensures the sponsor isn’t too imposing and leaves the rest of the shirt to glisten with beauty. It’s classically simple, yet stylish.

West Ham fans will have wanted to see a bit more blue on this one but there’s nothing you can’t like about this wonderful looking Umbro edition.

They’ve opted for a full claret shirt this term, moving away from their traditional sky blue sleeves, and it works well. The round-neck collar finishes it off nicely.

It’s charming, much like new Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini.

It’s a wonderful looking shirt that probably would’ve been ranked 1st if it wasn’t for the next exceptional addition to the Premier League…

Stop what you’re doing and spend five minutes worshipping this masterpiece.

It’s gold, not yellow or off-brown, which Wolves fans are delighted about, and it looks absolutely sensational.

Wolves’ home shirt ran away with it in our rankings, finishing well ahead of the Hammers in second.

Even the sponsor, which is probably a little bit too big, works pretty well with the rest of the design.

It’s a classic design and that’s what essentially won the hearts of everyone here at FFC towers. A worthy winner.

Keep an eye out for our 18/19 Premier League away shirt Power Rankings later this week!
