Committed Hayden remains motivated to succeed

It is hard to think of Matthew Hayden as a slow starter. He has made his name by destroying opening bowlers and quickly turning shiny new balls into lifeless chunks of worn-out leather. But when it took him six years to make his first seven Test appearances, reaching 100 Tests seemed like an unattainable goal.He will bring up the milestone at the Adelaide Oval on Friday against New Zealand, eight and a half years after regaining his position permanently. At the time he was already 29, had a mountain of state runs and wondered if his big break would ever come, but in the lead-up to the game he said his eventful career-path was not particularly special.”My story’s not any more significant than anyone else’s,” Hayden said. “Anyone that’s got into the Australian cricket team has had to have their personal challenges met, and they’ve confronted those and conquered them – that’s just what it means to play for Australia, that’s the fabric of playing for the baggy green.”Hayden will be the 11th Australian to reach a century of Tests, although questions remain over just how many matches he will add to the tally. His form since suffering an achilles tendon injury mid-year has been disappointing but he has not decided on an exit time and he said the constant speculation over his future was not a worry.”You get used to the melodramatic nature of performances, sometimes you’re okay, other times you’re not okay, so it’s just the way it goes,” he said. “And the swings and roundabouts of people’s perceptions are something I’ve taken, never to heart, but more as a motivation as to how I can get better every single game.”My commitment to the game hasn’t changed, and more than anything if I can say what I’m proud of that would be it, Matthew Hayden in 1991 worked as hard as he works in 2008. And that guarantees you at least the best result in terms of how you prepare yourself, but it doesn’t guarantee success.”The Adelaide Test presents him with an ideal opportunity to regain his best form. He will be facing an attack devoid of superstars, with the exception of Daniel Vettori, on a pitch expected to offer the seamers little help.Vettori, the New Zealand captain, recalled once having his first ball of a Gabba Test spanked back over his head by Hayden for six. He said few men had mastered the art of dominating slow bowling like Hayden over the past decade.”Him and Gilchrist were the two guys I always thought any ball I bowled could disappear out of the park,” Vettori said. “Even if I felt like it was a good one and that always makes it tough bowling against guys like that – so destructive. Most of the time they took it to spinners.”He’s the sort of guy that a lot of batsmen grow up wanting to emulate the way he played spin. And it wasn’t just an average spinner, it was guys all the way through to Muralitharan. He was aggressive against him, Harbhajan … I think he almost wrote the manual for how to be aggressive against spin bowling.”Hayden, 37, said one of the keys to his longevity in the game was having interests away from cricket. “I’ve pursued other passions as well, food and life around the sea, so that’s who I really am as a person,” he said. “I’m a bushy at heart but love the ocean.”

Newcastle transfer update on Diakhaby

Newcastle United are now reportedly ‘in talks’ to sign Mouctar Diakhaby before the summer transfer window ends.

The Lowdown: Diakhaby wants Newcastle

According to AS, the St. James’ Park faithful have not ruled out the possibility of signing Diakhaby, who sees them as a ‘good destination’ for him.

The Valencia central defender reportedly wants to play in the Premier League.

The Latest: Talks

As per Ekrem Konur, the North East club are now ‘in talks’ to sign Diakhaby, along with Leicester City, while Fenerbahce also hold an interest in him.

However, Valencia are demanding a fee in the region of €12m (£10.3m) for his signature.

The Verdict: Sign

The Tyneside outfit desperately need to bring in more players before the deadline hits, given that only Joe Willock has come in from Arsenal and he was already in their squad last season, albeit on loan.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Diakhaby would give Steve Bruce another handy option in the middle of the defence, and with a six-foot-three frame, he would certainly offer a real presence in both boxes.

Nonetheless, having played in the UEFA Champions League with two different teams (Transfermarkt), he has experience of playing at the highest level as well, and at 24 years of age, would represent a smart investment by the Magpies, especially for a price of just £10.3m in today’s market.

West Ham re-enter Kurt Zouma talks

According to journalist Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard (via Twitter), there has been a twist in West Ham’s hunt for a new centre-back as GSB go back into talks over a possible deal for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

The Lowdown: Zouma talks flounder…

Soon after the Hammers entered negotiations for Zouma, as backed by Sky Sports, the move seemed to be all but over after the defender reportedly refused to join them (The Guardian).

This propelled GSB and West Ham to prioritise a move for Fiorentina powerhouse Nikola Milenkovic, and while Rosser backs that the club are now closing in on his services, he details a twist as Zouma also re-enters the frame.

The Latest: West Ham re-open Zouma talks…

As per The Evening Standard reporter, writing on Twitter, West Ham have ‘gone back into talks’ over Zouma to see if there is any way a move for him can be salvaged.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-gossip/” title=”West Ham latest gossip…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, as also explained in his piece, ‘tentative negotiations’ have re-emerged over the 26-year-old despite his transfer to east London collapsing earlier this window.

As GSB eye a move for the Premier League colossus, it is also claimed that West Ham are ‘hopeful of a breakthrough this week’ in regards to Milenkovic.

The Verdict: Hopeful update?

Depending on developments, West Ham could add very capable defensive additions in either Milenkovic or Zouma – but the latter man certainly stands out as a target worth the trouble.

He averaged a very cool and composed 90.9% pass accuracy out from the back over 2020/2021 domestically, more than any West Ham regular by comparison, whilst even proving to be a threat going forward with five goals in that time (WhoScored).

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan is certainly one of his many admirers, explaining to Football Insider how Zouma is ‘very big, powerful, strong, quick and a threat in the air’.

As West Ham re-open talks in a summer transfer twist, there is reason to believe he would be a brilliant signing if there is hope of salvaging a move.

Newcastle may sign more if Hayden goes

Newcastle United have now been backed to bring in more players before the summer transfer window ends, on one condition.

The Lowdown: Hayden going?

According to Football Insider, Watford have now ‘set their sights’ on signing Hayden, and it is understood that the central midfield player is ‘keen’ on a move to Vicarage Road before the window closes.

A source from the Hornets has claimed that they are now interested in signing him, and a potential move down south appears to have turned his head.

The Latest: Campbell claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell, who is now a pundit after playing as a striker for the likes of Everton and Arsenal, has now claimed that he can see the St. James’ Park faithful bringing more players in, so long as they sell Hayden first of all:

“Newcastle need to move and shake and freshen things up and if he leaves I think they could bring in one or two more.

“I think they need that. A couple of fresh faces could revitalise that team. They’ve been stagnant for a little while now.

“If he wants to go down back down south you don’t stand in his way if the money is right.

“Let him leave and get somebody else in. I’m sure Newcastle will have targets.”

The Verdict: Keep and add more!

If the North East club are to avoid a potential relegation battle this season, then they need to keep hold of Hayden and add more players in the squad around him.

Dubbed an ‘outstanding’ player by Magpies legend Alan Shearer after impressing in their 3-2 home win against Southampton in the Premier League back in February, Hayden was a key player on Tyneside in the last term, winning no fewer than 5.5 of his duels per game, as well as averaging 2.2 tackles, 1.9 clearances and 1.8 interceptions per match (Sofascore).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-5/” title=”Newcastle updates! (5)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

With just Joe Willock signed so far, who was part of the squad anyway from January onwards in a loan spell from Arsenal, the Toon need to bring in some more bodies as soon as possible, given that the deadline is ticking.

Kevin Dean, the Derbyshire seamer, has announced he will retire from first-class cricket at the end of the season after 15 years with the county. He made his first-class debut against India in 1996, was awarded his county cap in 1998 and a benefit in 2006.Dean, 32, who played 119 first-class matches and took 401 wickets, will make a farewell appearance in the Pro40 match against Warwickshire on Saturday. Though he averaged only 11.52 with the bat, one of his early successes was when he hit the winning runs against the visiting Australians in a tour match in 1997. His best season was 2002 when he was the joint-leading wicket-taker in England with 82 wickets.Dean’s opportunities at first-class level were limited in recent seasons by injury, and the highlight was his six-wicket haul against Bangladesh A in July, when he had a chance of getting all ten wickets. He also played 11 List A games, taking 160 wickets at 30.55.John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, praised Dean as a model professional and one who set a great example for the club’s younger players. “Kevin has been a tremendous player for Derbyshire for many years and his retirement is a sad day for the club,” he said. “At his peak he was undoubtedly one of the best bowlers in the country and was unlucky not to play at a higher level.”

Record-breaking Hick's heroics not enough

A round-up from the latest Twenty20 Cup matches

Graeme Hick may continue to roll back the years in world-record breaking fashion but in an appearance that meant he had played more matches than anyone else, although he made a fifty he was not destined for the fairytale finish everyone yearned for. Somerset may have beaten Worcestershire by ten runs at Worcester – only their second win of the term – but the focus was on the 42-year-old Hick in his 1196th senior match, which took him past Graham Gooch’s record. His 63 came from 47 balls with five fours and two sixes but the dream was dashed when he was caught by Arul Suppiah off Alfonso Thomas. The bowler Thomas ended with 4 for 27 which proved the ultimate difference as Worcestershire made a good fist of attempting to hunt down their target of 177. Peter Trego and Ian Blackwell were the architects-in-chief, the pair hitting their forties in style.Warwickshire put paid to Northamptonshire’s unbeaten record in fine style, with an emphatic nine-wicket win with 18 balls to spare at Northampton. They drew level with them on points with a game in hand in the process. Northamptonshire’s first loss in five matches was looking inevitable when they slumped to 67 for 9 after Chris Martin’s two early wickets put them on the back foot from the off. Johann Louw and Jason Brown added respectability with an unbroken last-ditch stand of 35 but their surgery was more cosmetic than lifesaving. Neil Carter’s 28-ball 52, with five fours and four sixes, set Warwickshire well on their way, he making the lion’s share of a 62-run opening stand with Jonathan Trott. Jim Troughton finished things off with Trott.North DivisionClick here for John Ward’s take on how Nottinghamshire squeezed out the win against Leicestershire at Trent Bridge.South DivisionClick here for a report on how Middlesex made it five wins in five by beating bottom-placed Sussex at Lord’s.

Pundit praises James Tarkowski after failed West Ham move

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer has praised Burnley’s James Tarkowski for his conduct following his failed transfer to West Ham.

Last year, Tarkowski was the subject of three failed bids from West Ham, the last one said to be £31m, with £25m offered up front.

It meant he was forced to stay at Turf Moor, which easily could have resulted in him kicking up a fuss.

In the end, though, that did not happen, with Tarkowski going on to play close to 40 games for Burnley last season, and Palmer has since praised the 28-year-old central defender for getting on with things.

“To be fair to the kid, I like people like him,” the ex-Leeds United star exclusively told TT. “He’s just gone on about his football and done his job. He’s not kicked up a fuss.

“If he keeps doing what he’s been doing, the bid will increase and he will go.”

West Ham may very well go back in for Tarkowski, with The Telegraph reporting that the east London club are still keen on the Englishman.

The same outlet states that Wolves are also interested, however, so West Ham look like they will have some competition for the player’s signature.
